Dec 15...We made 15 miles today. The children are become inured somewhat to the rigors of travel. Japanese planes again appeared overhead today but made no move toward us. By their insouciance, I suspect they judge us to be no threat. There were two cases of dysentery today among the troops. We pray this is not cholera. As a precaution, they are riding in a vehicle by themselves. We got word today that 3 more brigades arrived in line West of Kuantan. This gives us hope that they may hold until we can reach them

Later in the war, the Allies developed Hellcatcillin and Corsairmycin, both of which were highly effective against E. betty...

2 Jap carriers off SF. 2 damaged. Hiryu either sunk or a hulk. 2 CVL's and CVE's in Amboina.

Good time for a surface battle.

Hard to believe that any military purpose was achieved by this. The Aerhart Light after the IJN got done with it.

Maybe make life difficult for the enemy by destroying a nice high platform able to be used for naval observation.

Indeed, it would make sense if one were planning an invasion of Baker..which is only about 15 miles away from Howland, I think. The highest natural elevation of Howland is only 20 ft. In the context of the game, then, it makes sense, to pump a couple of rounds into it on the way to Baker. Perhaps the Japanese had an intention, at one time, to capture Baker or Howland?

The transports were nestled all snug in their harbor
While visions of bayonettes filled them with ardor
The bosun in his'kerchief and I in my cap
Had just settled down to look at the map
When out on the sound their arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bridge to see what was the matter
Away to the porthole I flew like a flash
Grabbed my field glasses and developed a rash
The moon in the East which had risen low
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But HMAS Australia, what a sight, Oh what fear!

The sailor from USS Triton seems to have been seriously lost (perhaps he had a medical problem and was put ashore?)

Well it says he is without arms....

(Sorry for the late quote... just catching up).

Good point. I hadn't considered that. One wonders how he signed the enlistment papers.

The America First Committee (an isolationist group) voted to cease activities on Dec 11, 1941. Imagine that two US carriers were sunk on Dec 9, the Houston and Marblehead lost in the PI, Jap subs were operating within sight of SF and San Diego and Jap carriers were opeating 900 miles off the coast of California........

Admiral of the Eastern Fleet Tabpub will have to answer that, but we have to get aggressive where we can to try to slow down the enemy timetable. Relief forces from Pearl and the West Coast are bottled up by Kaga and Akagi. Shokaku (probably) passed eastward near Palmyra. Houston and Marblehead are sunk. Bosie and Tromp are damaged. We have whats left of the depleted ANZAC force, plus POW, Repulse, 4 Dutch and RN CL's and some 4-stacker US DD's and a few Dutch DD's to guard everything from Singapore to Noumea.

Gosh, it sounds like they need a laxative or something....

ADM Warby in his memoirs...written for posterity...

"Well, yes, you would have to say that the raid on the Rabaul landings was not well thought out, but I felt that the situation called for it at the time. I had the only force in the area that could impede the Japanese progress that was starting to look like an invasion of fire ants. The whole of Australia is wondering what the Yanks are up to right now. But, all we can do is sailor on, and defend the territory of the Commonwealth as best we can with what we have available."

pp 12-13 "Warby at War: A Sailor's story"

Finally, we get some hard information on the location of the "missing" carriers:
They were right about where NavInt thought that they were operating in.
