Let's say I only want (or can only afford) a few tanks, but I want them to be elite. And let's say I want them to be StuGs. How can I do this? That is the workaround I'm referring to.

"sturm company" has 4 elite stugs in it..

I am sure every commander thru out history wanted the best troops, , more men, better firepower, more air, more artillery, 'Elite' Stugs, or whatever.
doesnt mean they always got it.
more often than not they probably didnt.
Travis wanted more men at The Alamo, he didnt get them, but he still fought on.
(HAD TO GET AN ALAMO PLUG IN THERE)

Please tell me that all this about the SS Plt, has not been simply because you want to buy 4 elite Stugs, and only 4.
but they have to be elite.

You cannot always get everything exactly as you want it...its war.

As to Hqs, I wouldnt mind if they were regular squads, but I also dont mind that they are not. In a campaign game I am free to "upgrade" them to any thing I want.

As to Engineers and Airborne, the Hqs unit is in addition ( as far as I can tell) to the squads of specialized forces so in effect you GAINED an extra unit, which in a campaign game could be changed to the specialized unit type.

A draw for me. No gain no loss.

As to "elite" units, I wouldnt mind the ability to buy elite units of all types. But as is noted by Alby that simply wasnt the case in most armies of the era.

Alby,

Heh.  No, my comments about SS armor platoon weren't about elite StuGs.  It has been brought to my attention that enhanced v2 is well suited for PBEM.  And since my games of enhanced v2 have all been against the AI so far, I think I should play some enhanced PBEM to get a better perspective.  I'm going to postpone further comment until I get that better perspective.

I was in the Depot Bar and Grill chat room a little while ago, and Leutnant and Korpraali suggested I enroll as a student at the Depot Academy.  So I sent SwampRat a request to join and will hopefully be enrolled there soon.  Then I'll get a chance to play in League PBEM games.  I'm looking forward to it.

I liked the sound of the Rostov Rats, so I'm thinking about joining them.  I haven't been accepted into the Academy yet, so I can't make a choice just yet.  But it sounds like fun.
