Hi guys,

Any of you know what the template size(-s) of the various RAF squadrons might be? In the database, the squadron max size seems to be either 12 or 16, with no pattern too apparent. Commonwealth squadrons all seem to be size 16, though.

Also, No.31 Squadron RAF - I know it had in Iraq during the summer of '41 and was back in Burma March/April '42 at the latest. Anyone know when it returned to India from Iraq?

Thx

Tom

Can't help, sorry, but if anyone knows this sort of stuff I'd appreciate an 'idiot's guide' to aird esignations for commonwealth units - the American stuff seems entirely logical in the way its organised and its easy to spot fragments and what they belong to.... the way air units are designated in the commonwealth forces is weird to me.... maybe I'm just stupid though.

Roger

There is no real pattern for sqn numbers in the RAF. Commonwealth units serving as part of the RAF got numbers in the 400 series, e.g. 416, units made with personnel from occupied countries were in the 300 series. 600 series units started as auxiliary units, and 500 series started as special reserve units, but as the RAF expanded other units were also allocated numbers in these series.

Within these number series RAF units could fly any kind of aircraft.

A little history on 31 sqn

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys, although I'm afraid I haven't learned anything I didn't already know.

Just to clarify, the question is about the standard number of aircraft in RAF squadrons, ie in WitP terms the MAX number of aircraft in a given squadron. In WitP, it seems to be either 16 or 12 for RAF squadrons, 16 for all Commonwealth squadrons regardless of type.

About No. 31 Squadron: I want to learn when it returned to India from Iraq. I know it was in Burma by March/April '42, but I can't presume that it came direct from the Middle East and that it wasn't back in India some time between Mid-41 and Spring of '42.

Currenly (in CHS) it arrives Aden 420301, but that's solely from a lag of information about it's whereabouts prior to this date. I Emailing the No. 31 Squadron Association a while ago, but got no reply. I know there's at least one, possibly two, monographs written about this unit, and I was rather hoping that someone might have assess to it.

Cheers,

Tom

IIRC standard RAF sqn size for fighter units was 12 + 4 reserves ready to go. Bomber units were usually larger than this.
