Hi guys,

here's part 2 of the FOST training course, enjoy!

BTW please ignore the USS Ward tag on the picture, I was too lazy to cut it off ;)

FOST 2 – Vampire Vampire Vampire
Objectives
Three mine hunting vessels are to be escorted to Reference Point PBL2. Starting time is 1200 hours and the convoy must arrive no later than 1800 hours. The three mine hunting vessels, Tyne, Hurwarth and Blyth must arrive undamaged, and Fort Victoria musn’t suffer more than 50% damage. In order to reach it’s destination in time, the convoy must move at an average speed of 15 knots. (Flank speed)

An enemy SAG is believed to be located east of the convoy's position and the aircraft threat is estimated as high.

1200
A direct course is plotted to Reference point PBL2 and speed is increased to flank. Radar picks up several neutral surface contacts.

Two minutes in, the first Lynx helo is ready and launched to investigate the surface contacts around the convoy. A minute later, an enemy AC is registered and two missiles are launched to intercept it. The missiles hit and the contact to the enemy plane is lost.

1215
Two more Lynx helos are ready to investigate the unidentified surface contacts.

A few minutes later, an unidentified air contact is reported to the north. As the contacts starts to come too close to the convoy, a helo is dispatched to identify. Only seconds before being in range of AA defenses, the helo identifies the contact as a Boing 767 commercial airliner.
Meanwhile, a second air contact is picked up south of the convoy, travelling at 1349 knots.

It is kept under surveillance, but so far, the AC is on a western course and several hundred nms away from the convoy.

In the next minutes, the bogie makes some erratic course changes, at times going straight at the convoy, but always turning around well before critical distance.

1240
An unidentified air contact is closing in on the convoy with 400 knots. A helo is trying to intercept and identify, but it just isnt fast enough. The bogie closes in until it is easily in range of AA defenses and again at the last moment is identified as yet another commercial airliner.

To the south, the bogie is still cruising around, until it suddeny changes it’s course and heads directly for the convoy at 18000 feet and with a speed of 1300 knots! By pure chance, a Lynx is positioned directly between the bogie and the convoy, and it manages to identify the bogie as a MiG 25R Foxbat B.

The MiG closes in but manages to stay just out of reach of the AA defenses. At the same time, one of the patrolling helos picks up several new air contacts to the north. While the MiG’s intentions remain unclear, one of the incoming AC from the north is identified as a Flogger. As the other incoming aircraft fly with the exact same speed, it is safe to assume that all them have to be regarded as hostile. However, the rules of engagement clearly state, that no contact that hasn’t been positively identified, is to be fired upon.

Finally the other AC are identified as well and missiles are launched to take them out. At the same time to the south, surface vessel INS Veer is identified as hostile by a patrolling helo. Immediately, three harpoon missiles are launched to sink the ship.

AA defenses manage to take out all eight incoming Floggers, while the harpoon missiles are closing in on the INS Veer. Two minutes later, INS Veer is hit by at least one missile and reported sinking by overflying helo.

1304
Now the scene starts getting hot. While to the Northeast, another wave of AC seems to be heading towards the convoy, another surface vessel to the east, INS Khukri, is identified as hostile. 3 harpoon missiles are launched to sink her. The MiG to the south seems to have waited for this to happen and starts to go straight at the convoy.

Ten nm from the convoy, AA defenses manage to take out the MiG. In the meantime, the bogies incoming from the north are identified as Mirage 2000H fighters.

A few minutes later, INS Khukri is sunk by the harpoon missiles and the Mirage fighters are shot down by the convoy’s AA defenses.

1331
Wishfull thinking bites you in the ass eventually. Since only 3 helos are available at a time, patrols were only set up for the northern, eastern and southern sector, while the western sector was pretty much ignored, hoping that nothing would happen there. So now lazyness comes to collect.... Out of nowwhere, several bogies appear 15 – 20 nms north-west of the convoy and only seconds later, „Vampire Vampire“ warnings pop up. With no helos to identify targets and absolutely no time to react, two of three vampires smash into the ships of the convoy.

With a helo trying to catch up in vain, the attacking AC turn back unharmed. Damage assessments report light damage on the Fort Victoria and HMS Westminster. A dumb mistake with very moderate consequences.

1400
After the shock of the last attack has subsided, everything seems calm. Helos now patrolling all four sectors should make sure that there won’t be a second surprise and nothing suspiscious is registered.

Then minutes later, the time for resting has passed. The patrolling picks up an unidentified air contact closing in with 1300 knots.

This time a helo is at the right place and manages to identify the AC as another Foxbat. Four Sea Dart missiles are launched to shoot down the aircraft. The MiG manages to evade the first two, tricks the third with a tight roll but is finally caught by the fourth and final missile while finishing it’s 180 degree turn.

No time to breathe, though, several air contacts are reported to the north east.

The patrolling helo manages to identify them as another wave of Floggers and AA defense takes out all four of them.
At the same time, another wave of Floggers comes in from the north-west, but this time a helo is ready and a hot welcome awaits them. Only one of the Floggers manages to break off and escape, dodging more than 7 missiles on the way!

1500
The enemy doesnt offer any time for resting anymore. Shortly after the previous attack, new air contacts are picked up to the north and identified as Mirage 2000 fighters.
All incoming AC are taken out, although one Mirage manages to launch it’s missile before being shot down. After several misses, the vampire is taken out by point defenses eventually.

1625
The first vessels reach Reference point PBL2, with the remaining ships dragging a few nms behind. But it isn’t over yet. New air contacts appear to the west of the convoy. Anticipating another Flogger attack, the sudden missile launch comes as a bad surprise. While two of the incoming AC indeed are identified as Floggers, two AC fire their missiles from several hundred nms away and turn back.

Now AA defenses have to worry about both the incoming Floggers and the two unknown vampires inbound on the convoy.

Of the two incoming Floggers, one manages to break through and fire a missile upon the convoy, the other is shot down by the AA defenses. Meanwhile one vampire succeds in dodging the point defense and hits HMS Somerset.
The remaining Flogger succesfully breaks free and manages to escape.
The sad outcome of this very last attack is the loss of HMS Somersat that sinks only three nm away from it’s destination.

The remaining ships hold their position at PBL2 until at 1658 hours, victory conditions are met.

Evaluation
FOST Losses:
HMS Somerset
1 Lynx (no idea when that happened)

Enemy losses:
3 Foxtrot
12 Flogger F
4 Flogger J
8 Mirage 2000H
INS Veer
INS Khukri
