Summary of Operations 8/31/42

HQ Asiatic Fleet now disembarked in Los Angeles after transport by sea from Australia via Wellington & Panama City. Current strength of Asiatic Fleet HQ is 69 support squads (out of TOE of 360). Asiatic Fleet HQ will draw replacements as support squads become available (this unit on low priority for replacement support elements behind front-line combat and base units) to rebuild to full TOE strength.

Central Pacific: Jap carrier aircraft patrol contacts by U.S. subs at Canton Is - no contacts at Kwajalein or Pago Pago. Mine sweeping ops by U.S. forces at Fanning Is, Jap mine sweeping ops continue at Kwajalein.

Several reports from PBY and B-17 naval patrol aircraft indicate KB task forces have reversed course and now moving eastward. Situation map follows.

Summary of Operations 9/1/42

Central Pacific: KB returns to launch another air attack against U.S. base at Palmyra.

An attempted "1000 bomber raid" from Palmyra by all available 4E bombers in the Central Pacific theater fails to hit Jap carriers - however, a large number of Japanese carrier fighters were damaged while intercepting the raid.

U.S. carrier TF's (four CV's) have turned back on a SW heading towards Johnston Is. U.S. carriers are heavily outnumbered by KB forces near Palmyra - U.S. CV's are moving into position to attack only if a favorable opportunity for a successful strike does occur. Possibility for a U.S. carrier counterattack might be favorable if (1) KB carriers exhaust their available ops, and/or (2) damage to a large number of Jap aircraft on the KB's carriers continues to occur at the present rate.

AAR's and situation map follows. Note: AAR's below are from Japanese report as there was a very significant AAR sync error on this game turn. Actual U.S. losses tend to confirm the Jap AAR's.

Jap carrier aircraft patrol contacts by U.S. subs at Canton Is - no contacts at Kwajalein or Pago Pago.

Summary of Operations 9/2/42 part deux

South Pacific: Allied surface TF (BB Prince of Wales, 1 CA, 3 CL's) reached Norfolk Is - no contact made with Japanese forces previously detected in this area. TF is now proceeding to Sydney. Jap recon flight (H8K Emily) over Norfolk Is.

Australia: Japanese air raids on 4 Australian Div and airfield facilities at Daly Waters - light damage, moderate casualties reported. Jap air recon flight detected over Tennant Creek.

F-5A recon flight over Darwin reports no change in status of Japanese forces. However, sigint report on 9/1 indicated Jap 44 Road Construction Bn previously at Darwin is now at Tjlitjap.

India/Burma: Japanese shore bombardment TF hits Calcutta. AAR follows. Several squadrons of land-based naval strike aircraft (Swordfish, Beauforts) are being transferred from Ceylon to bases surrounding Calcutta. Unfortunately the Royal Navy currently has only two BB's available (Valiant, Revenge) with British Withdrawal for 9/42 requiring one of these BB to go - no match for the IJN. I am moving non-essential air and ground units from Calcutta to adjacent bases - from where they can be recalled into Calcutta as the situation dictates. If I can't stop Pillager from hitting Calcutta, I will at least make it as close to an "empty bag" as possible.

Summary of Operations 9/5/42

Sigint reports Jap 68 Construction Bn now in Efate - unit transferred from HQ Home Defense Force.

Central Pacific: Japanese TF's withdrawing from Palmyra Is area - moving on W heading towards Kwajalein. BB Yamato was detected in one of these TF's from a PBY patrol flight. A number of U.S. submarines are now at or in the area of Kwajalein.

Jap carrier aircraft patrols now detected by U.S. subs at Kwajalein, Pago Pago, and Canton Is.

U.S. engineer and base force units continue repairs to airfield and port facilities at Palmyra. Estimated that Palmyra will be inoperative as an air base for 7-10 days, port facilties are damaged but operational. Supply point stocks at Palmyra (30K+) were not hit in any of the Jap attacks.

South Pacific: Jap air recon (H8K Emily) flight reported over Norfolk Is. Otherwise quiet.

Australia: Japanese air bombing raids continue against 4 Australian Division and airfield facilities at Daly Waters - light damage and casualties again reported.

F-5A recon aircraft flights over Darwin reporting no change in status of Jap forces there. Sigint reports that Jap 1 Engineer Rgt moved northward from Katherine and now in Darwin (for transfer out of NW Australia?).

A little perspective at this point in the war...

Pillager has appeared to stop the tide of Japanese conquest at what will be a very difficult outer perimeter for the Allies to crack. The recent Japanese attacks on Palmyra and Calcutta by Pillager may be the start of a new phase in this campaign - conceding that an Allied buildup is underway and cannot be stopped in the long run, however, launching strikes against key forward Allied positions to delay and disrupt a buildup is quite feasible. A possible byproduct of strikes against forward Allied bases is that I could be drawn into committing my own forces (particularly carriers) into a defensive action where Japanese forces would have local superiority and/or be at a tactical advantage. This was quite apparent in the Palymra action where the bulk of the IJN was committed, the KB in a compact formation with 7-8 carriers being no match for the four CV's I had in the area. Not to mention all but four Jap BB's (these four BB's being used against Calcutta) involved in the Palmyra action as well.

From the Allied perspective, victory point totals in this campaign are relatively meaningless. As shown in the intel report above, a Japanese auto-victory in Jan '43 is inevitable (which is something I pretty much conceded about two months ago). Victory points aside, this campaign is quite winnable for the Allies over the long term especially with the bulk of starting Allied forces relatively intact.

A substantial Allied problem in this campaign is how to crack the outer perimeter. Needless to say, this endeavor will take substantial Allied losses to accomplish. My victory conditions for that stage of the campaign will not be measured so much in terms of capturing bases on the Japanese outer perimeter as inflicting substantial losses on Japanese forces, particularly the KB. A 1:1 swap of CV's lost in actions along the Japanese outer perimeter would be a successful outcome.

My first priority in winning an Allied offensive is attrition. If it's Japanese and it floats, sink it, anything that's encountered from a rubber raft to the Yamato. If it flies, it crashes and burns. LCU's - permanently erased. Capturing Japanese bases only to the degree where it supports a war of attrition. After the Jap forces are pounded, then we can deal with real estate. Victory points being is a distant third in my calculations.

Timing? The phony war continues into '43 if I have my way about it. Several factors going into my calculations.

(1) This applies mainly to U.S. carriers, but can be applied to other U.S. and Allied forces as well. When I attack, I plan to lose carriers. And in the process of losing those carriers, take the core of the KB down with them. 1:1 swap is a win for me. What is important in my calculations is that any U.S. carriers lost be quickly replaced. Timing of an U.S. counteroffensive in early 1943 would allow any lost U.S. carriers to be quickly replaced with a stream of Essex CV's and Independence CVL's entering the game as reinforcements. Not only that, lost U.S. carriers will become a part of the reinforcement stream. With the KB hopefully destroyed or badly diminished, the "second string" of new Essex and Independence class carriers will gain superiority over any remaining Japanese opposition and continue the attack.

(2) Torpedo dud rate reduction. U.S. submarines become a factor. Not to mention the TBF squadrons on U.S. carriers becoming a useful weapon in naval attack strikes.

(3) Getting as many ships as possible through the 10/42 upgrades. Particular emphasis on U.S. submarine upgrades and increased flak on U.S. carriers and escorting surface ships. Putting more flak aboard U.S. ships may be small change, but small change could end up being the difference. Radar doesn't hurt either. I want the best possible "first string" going in vs the KB.

maybe other things as well...

Where to strike? No decision on that yet. I'm making no assumptions, excluding no possibilities. With all the territory Pillager took, there's gotta be a soft underbelly somewhere. My job is to find it.

It's been a year since Pillager and I started this PBEM. As the Allied player, it's so tempting to get impatient and want to make something happen in the early going which in most cases would have been a mistake. I had to "bite my tongue" a lot and let the Japs have their fun. Pay back is coming.

Summary of Operatios 9/10/42

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines at Kwajalein reporting heavy Jap carrier aircraft patrols - no sightings of Jap carrier planes reported from either Canton Is or Pago Pago. U.S. sub S-32 hit and heavily damaged in an attack by aJap carrier plane.

Now appears that all KB carriers returned to Kwajalein from their recent sortie against Palmyra. U.S. minelaying subs are now enroute to Kwajalein including SS Argonaut (moving alone), plus a sub minelaying TF of six subs.

South Pacific: Japanese surface combat TF at Norfolk Is - engaged and sunk Dutch AK Sloet van de Beele. AAR follows. Jap recon flight (H8K Emily) reported over Norfolk Is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CL Kinu
DD Harukaze
DD Sawakaze
DD Asagao

Allied Ships
AK Sloet van de Beele, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Australia: Jap air bombing raids continue against airfield facilities at Daly Waters - Daly Waters airfield has been completely knocked out for some time, no Allied aircraft remain at Daly Waters. As long as Jap air attacks continue against Daly Waters, I'm not making any attempt to repair the airfield (no engineer units currently in Daly Waters) or base aircraft there.

Airfield bombing attacks have mostly produced light casualties to Allied ground forces in Daly Waters, minimal damage to supply point stocks there.

DEI: Japanese mop-up operation against Allied-controlled base at Benkolen (Sumatra). Jap 1 Parachute Rgt air dropped into Benkolen - one L3Y Tina transport hit by Dutch ground fire. Dutch forces still holding Benkolen for now. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Benkolen

Allied max defense: 11 - adjusted defense: 3
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 2)
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

India/Burma: All sectors reporting quiet. Only minor activity other than Jap recon flight over Calcutta.

China: Japanese ground offensive continues in bridgehead at hex 45,36. AAR follows. Jap ground units newly arriving to reinforce combat in hex 45,36 include 41st Division, 15 Tank Rgt, and 2 Mountain Gun Rgt. Refer to China situation map in the 9/9 Operations report.

Chinese ground forces now in the hex 45,36 area are insufficient to eliminate the Jap bridgehead. The bridgehead threatens Chinese defensive positions in Henghow, it also opens the road for a Jap ground thrust towards Chungking. I have begun withdrawing many of the Chinese ground units in open ground hexes along the river line opposite Iching (NW of the hex 45,36 bridgehead) back from the river line to keep them mobile and prevent their being cut off and encircled in the event of a Jap move to outflank and trap Chinese units in positions along the river line to the NW of the bridgehead. Pillager's mode of tactics in China being to trap Chinese ground units and destroy them. A thin crust of Chinese units remain on the river line to contest any Jap advance across the river from the Ichang area.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 45,36

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 92422 troops, 427 guns, 151 vehicles, Assault Value = 1940

Summary of Operations 9/12/42

Central Pacific: A minefield was detected at Palmyra by the U.S. ASW task force sent to Palmyra to attack the Jap sub I-172. Minefield was probably laid on 9/9 by the I-172. The ASW task force partially swept the minefield after detecting it. A minesweep TF was dispatched from Christmas Is to Palmyra to complete sweeping mines.

Damage from Japanese naval bombardment at the Palmyra base now fully repaired. Some aircraft based on Palmyra remain damaged.

Jap carrier air patrols still being encounterd by U.S. subs at Kwajalein, though the number of Jap aircraft contacts sharply reduced. No reports of Jap carrier aircraft from U.S. subs at either Canton Is or Pago Pago.

Sigint report on 9/12: 33rd Road Construction Battalion is loaded on AP Sanpuku Maru moving to Baker Island. The Sanpuku Maru is believed to be departing Manado - based on last known location of 33 Construction Bn in Manado on 8/9/42. Six U.S. submarines (Albacore, Flying Fish, S-34, S-39, S-41, S-47) now moving towards the Baker Is area with orders to intercept and sink the Sanpuku Maru. Developments in this operation expected to take some days to unfold.

South Pacific: U.S. submarine S-27 spotted and attacked Jap CL Natori at Noumea. CL Natori was in the Jap TF reported at Norfolk Is on 9/10 which sank the Dutch AK Sloet van de Beele. No hits or damage reported on either the S-27 or CL Natori.

Summary of Operations 9/13/42

Editor's note - Definition of "Japanese carrier aircraft" in these discussions indicate references to planes of Japanese aircraft types (i.e. Vals, Kates, Zeroes, etc) that are capable of operating from carriers. It is realized here while the majority of these aircraft are actually operating from a carrier, the possiblity of "carrier aircraft" being land-based is not excluded (given that the Japanese do have a few land-based air units equipped with these aircraft). Possible deploying of land-based Val and Kate-equipped air units to selected air bases to act as a form of "decoy" must be considered until confirmed otherwise, this especially true in the Central & South Pacific theaters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Pacific: Jap carrier aircraft patrols reported by U.S. subs at Kwajalein, Pago Pago, and Canton Is. Sighting of Jap submarine (probably I-172) south of Johnston Is. heading NW by a B-24 bomber flying naval search.

Sigint for 9/13 reports Japanese 2nd Construction Bn now located at Gardner Is. Original command assignment for this unit was China.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight (H8K Emily) over Norfolk Is. U.S. submarine S-27 at Noumea reports contact with three Jap DD's last reported in the same surface combat TF with CL Natori.

Australia: Jap air bombing raids continue against 4 Australian Div and airfield facilities at Daly Waters - moderate casualties reported. F-5A recon flight over Darwin, no report of change in strength or status of Japanese forces in Darwin.

India/Burma: Japanese TF spotted forming up in Rangoon base by Hudson I plane on naval search. Composition and heading of this TF was not determined. All RAF air units in the Calcutta area on alert to execute naval air attack on the Jap TF in the event it moves in this direction. F-4 recon flight over Rangoon reports that Jap BB's (Nagato, Mutsu, Ise, Hyuga) are still at anchor in Rangoon port.

Jap air recon flights continue over base at Imphal. Apparently the occasional fighter sweep of 70-80 Hurricanes over Jap bases in north and central Burma could be annoying Pillager.

China: Mostly quiet. However, the Japanese bridgehead across the river line in hex 45,36 has to be regarded as a serious threat. Situation map follows.

Summary of Operations 9/14/42

Central Pacific: U.S. subs report contacts with Japanese carrier aircraft patrols at Kwajalein, Pago Pago, and Canton Is.

I established a forward submarine base at Christmas Is (port size 4 with two AS now at anchor, 36K supply & 48K fuel on hand). Utilization of the sub base at Christmas Is is planned to handle mainly undamaged subs on patrol missions (refueling and rearming) to extend patrol range and endurance. Some shorter range subs (S-class, etc) will likely use Christmas Is as their home base. Christmas Is could also be used as a emergency base for damaged subs - reduce flotation or fire damage before moving on to Pearl or the U.S. West Coast for more extensive repair. Longer range patrol subs, subs on minelaying missions, and light system damage repair will continue to use Pearl Harbor. U.S. West Coast bases will still handle repair of subs with heavier system damage (level 15-20 and greater) and most submarine upgrades.

Comments or suggestions from readers on this are welcome. Also... would only one AS at Christmas Is be sufficient? If so, I'd rather send the extra AS out of there.

Australia: Three Jap air bombing raids on Daly Waters - one on airfield facilities, two raids against 4 Australian Division. Some of the Jap bombers (Ki-49 Helens) previously used to attack the airfield at Daly Waters have been diverted to attack 4 Div. Light casualties and damage reported.

F-5A recon flight over Darwin - no report of changes in status or strength of Japanese forces located in Darwin.

Sigint on 9/14 reports Jap 18 Heavy FA Rgt moved from Wyndham to Katherine. Quite possible 18 Rgt has been in Katherine for some time (given the date it was last reported in Wyndham).

India/Burma: Hudson I naval patrol flight reports no movement by Jap TF spotted in Rangoon on 9/13. Jap recon flights over Imphal (2) and Port Blair. All other sectors reporting quiet.

China: No ground combat reported. Current situation map follows showing latest known deployments of Jap and Chinese ground forces.

wneumann,

In view of your stated use of Christmas Is, I would only base 1 AS there and use the other to establish another forward sub base (remember with an AS present the port can be smaller than size 4).  For resupply purposes, 1 AS only suffices.  If you intend to undertake a reasonable amount of repair work, then multiple (up to a max of 4) AS convey benefits.

Alfred

Thanks Alfred,   I thought only one AS would be sufficient there - inadvertantly sent two of them to Christmas Is. I don't intend doing any significant repair activity at Christmas Is, only refuelling and rearming of subs on patrol. Any other activity beyond that (including repairs, arming subs for minelaying missions, etc) will be done either at Pearl or U.S. West coast bases. I had the impression that the second AR at Christmas Is would not be of any benefit.

Ground combat between elements of Chinese 50 Guerilla Corps and Japanese forces moving into the hex 45,36 bridgehead. AAR follows. This action reveals continuing movement of very substantial Jap ground forces into the bridgehead. Chinese ground forces in threatened positions on both flanks of the hex 45,36 bridgehead are redeploying to less exposed positions from where they can oppose the Jap movements. Rear-guard positions are being maintained by Chinese forces along the river line NW of hex 45,35 and also in the Hengchow area. Hengchow itself is being held by Chinese static LCU's, all Chinese mobile LCU's that were in Hengchow moving out. Japanese ground units in the bridgehead are being attacked from the air by Chinese bomber squadrons within range of the bridgehead.
