One USAAF fighter squadron (20th Fighter) at Alice Springs upgraded from P-40E to P-40N. Plans are to upgrade a second USAAF fighter squadron in Australia to P-40N's from P-40E. This will evenly divide the four USAAF P-40 fighter squadrons now in Australia between P-40E's and N's, allowing front-line squadrons to draw replacement planes from both pools. Additional USAAF fighter squadrons are now enroute to Australia - nearly all of these equipped with P-38's.

DEI: Only one Allied sub currently operating in this area. A second sub is now enroute to patrol in the DEI. Most of the Allied subs assigned to this theatre now in shipyards for repair of combat damage - this situation expected to continue for several weeks.

Summary of Operations 4/22/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 25 days.

Central Pacific: Light Jap air patrols reported near Kwajalein, quiet at Pago Pago and the Canton Is area. No contacts reported between U.S. subs and Jap surface ships.

Unidentified sub again detected north of Pearl Harbor. U.S. ASW TF's are heading towards this contact.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet.

An unidentified Jap submarine detected at Rarotonga, for now it can stay there. Plans to land Allied LCU's on Rarotonga and begin base construction there have been suspended. The way the longer range plans I'm considering are beginning to develop, the quieter the South Pacific theater is the better. It is good that Pillager is indulging his curiosity and finding nothing to satisfy it.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek, otherwise no combat activity.

Allied recon flights over Exmouth, Darwin, and Port Moresby all reporting Jap fighters on CAP, otherwise no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

DEI: Very light Jap air patrols. British sub Trusty in action vs Jap ASW TF off Palembang. AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 4/26/43 - the Florida Monsoon season edition.

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 21 days.

U.S. carrier TF's now on the U.S. west coast to refit ships (minor system damage) and also for 4/43 upgrades. This upgrade is not as major a one for the carrier forces as 10/42 - though the 4/43 upgrade includes CV Wasp, significant AA increases on escort BB's and some cruisers, some DD's receive improved ASW capability.

A small number of carrier dive bomber squadrons upgrading during this refit from SBD-3's to SBD-5's. More DB squadrons will upgrade to SBD-5's as sufficient numbers of replacement pool planes become available. F6F Hellcats do not become available until 7/43, so carrier fighter squadrons continue operating F4F Wildcats.

Completion of ship refits and 4/43 ship upgrades for U.S. carrier TF's expected to roughly coincide with arrival of CV Essex. Carrier forces will be reorganized to add CV Essex and four Independence CVL's - this will bring strength of the U.S. carrier force to 7 CV's, 4 CVL's. In addition to U.S. forces, a British air combat TF (one Illustrious CV, BB Prince of Wales and escorts) is now refitting its ships in the U.S. At last... the KB has something to reckon with.

Central Pacific: Light Jap air patrols (G4M Betty & E13A1 Jakes) reported near Kwajalein, several G3M Nell air patrols at Pago Pago. No significant Jap air activity detected in the Canton Is area or off the Japanese home islands. Also no reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PB4Y Liberator spots and attacks Japanese sub I-10 in hex 111,66 (NNW of Lihue). The I-10 was reported hit, no confirmation of damage or sinking.

South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Norfolk Is and Auckland. Unidentified Jap sub remains at Rarotonga.

Base construction at Bora Bora is proceeding at a very good rate. Landing of U.S. troops and base construction at Bora Bora was decided upon as a last-minute alternative to Rarotonga - supply and Seabees originally ordered to Rarotonga were landed instead on Bora Bora. Developments are making it more desirable that I keep Pillager's attention focused on events (or possible ones) to the north, leaving the southern areas as quiet as possible. The decision to leave Rarotonga vacant for the time being is part of this policy.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek, no reported ground or air combat.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all report fighters on CAP, no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights continue over Calcutta, Dacca, Asansol. No reported ground or air combat.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reporting no Jap TF's or disbanded ships in port, 279 aircraft (104 fighters, 55 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 37(156).

Dutch sub O-24 reported three Jap TF's off Rangoon. The O-24 appears to have engaged all three TF's and reported to be sunk in action. AAR's follow.

F-5A recon over Rangoon after the attack reporting 3 Jap TF's, 226 aircraft (72 fighters, 59 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 4(189). This recon report indicating that heavy industry facilities in Rangoon have been pretty much flattened. Targetting of 4E bomber attacks over Rangoon will likely be switched to mainly hit resource point production with occasional strikes against heavy industry to keep it suppressed.

Summary of Operations 5/5/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 12 days.

Central Pacific: G4M Betty air patrols reported near Kwajalein and Canton Is, Jap air patrols also reported at Pago Pago. 55 Japanese ships detected in port at Kwajalein.

Numerous Jap air patrols reported by US subs off Japanese home islands - planes include D4Y Judy, also E13A1 & F1M2 float planes.

SS Porpoise patrolling at Truk engages Jap task force with CVE, also detects multiple Jap TF's in Truk base (several of these TF's having at least one carrier). Truk appears to be "home base" for the KB since its departure from Kwajalein. Pillager also appears to now be keeping Jap carrier planes grounded when carriers are disbanded in their base - this practice a change from the nearly continuous ASW air patrols flown from Jap carriers during 1942 when the KB was based in Kwajalein. I had suspected Pillager had moved the KB's main base to Truk from Kwajalein following my attempted carrier strike against Kwajalein in 1/43, these sightings by SS Porpoise providing the first information that confirms this. AAR's of SS Porpoise's actions follow.

Summary of Operations 5/6/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 11 days. A relatively quiet day, even among quiet ones...

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines reporting Jap air patrols continue near Kwajalein and at Pago Pago, greatly reduced elsewhere (Canton Is area, off Japanese home islands). SS Bass engaged twice W of Maleolap by a Jap ASW TF, AAR of this action follows.

On reaching this location, the ASW TF found and attacked another Jap sub. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 104,84

Japanese Ships
SS I-153, hits 8, on fire, heavy damage (confirmed sunk)

Allied Ships
DD King
DD Edsall
DD Le Triomphant
DD Balch
DD Phelps
DD McDougal
DD Selfridge
DD Warrington
DD Sampson

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Pacific: No Jap recon flights, Jap submarine remains at Pago Pago. Otherwise quiet.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek. No reported air or ground combat.

A total of 120 USAAF P-38 fighters (mostly "F" model) arrived in Sydney over the last two days. Pilot experience level of these air units is in the mid to upper-50's. Seems to be as far as they can be trained without sending them into combat. My plan is sending these units into combat with P-38F's (I have a substantial P-38F replacement pool to soak up plane losses), eventually upgrading to P-38G's when the pilot experience level gets higher.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

DEI: U.S. sub Halibut in Macassar Straits between Balikpapan and Tarakan reports contact with Jap transport TF. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 33,64

Japanese Ships
AO Erimo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PG Taiko Maru

Allied Ships
SS Halibut

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Dacca, Calcutta, Asansol.

Chinese planes launch ground attack mission on Lashio, no reported plane losses or Jap casualties.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reports 1 Jap TF (+1 from last report), heavy industry 6(187), 276 aircraft (93 fighters, 65 bombers), 17 Jap LCU's (+1 from last report). Pillager is still attempting to repair heavy industry facilities in Rangoon. 4E bombing attacks on Rangoon will begin hitting resource production to continue eliminating most or (preferably) all supply point production capability within Japanese-occupied areas of Burma. Heavy industry facilities in Rangoon will continue to be hit if Pillager makes any substantial progress in repairing them.

China: Jap recon flights over Chungking, Chengtu.

Light ground attack raids by both Chinese and Jap air forces continue. Overall pilot experience level of LT Zuolin's 8th CAF "Den of Thieves" squadron has reached 60 without losses, this air unit receiving its first well-deserved R & R.

Jap ground forces launch bombardment attack in Kweilin, no reported casualties.

Some Jap air patrol activity off the Japanese home islands including G5N Liz, also F1M2 Pete & E13A1 Jake floatplanes.

No reported contacts between US submarines and Jap surface ships in any of these locations.

44 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, unidentified Jap submarine remains at Bora Bora. Otherwise quiet.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Alice Springs, no reported ground or air combat.

Hudson I recon over Exmouth reports 33 aircraft (23 bombers), 5 Jap LCU's.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Asansol and Calcutta. Chinese planes launch a second ground attack mission on Lashio, no reported plane losses or Jap casualties. Otherwise quiet.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reports 1 Jap TF, 319 aircraft (120 fighters, 51 fighters), 17 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 7(186). Today's aircraft count in Rangoon is a slight increase, the highest number of Jap aircraft located here in some time. Could possibly indicate Pillager is concentrating Jap fighter squadrons in Rangoon.

China: Jap recon flights over Chungking and Pakhoi, light ground attack raids by both Chinese and Jap air forces continue.

Summary of Operations 5/8/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 9 days.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting slightly reduced Jap G4M Betty air patrols near Kwajalein - some G4M Bettys now flying patrol near Canton Is. Jap air patrols including G3M Nell & B5N2 Kates (probably land-based) reported at Pago Pago. No detected Jap air activity off the Japanese home islands.

Again no reported contacts between US submarines and Jap surface ships in any of these locations.

PBY Catalina on naval search spotted and attacked Jap submarine I-172 west of Palmyra (hex 103,91). I-172 reported moving on an E heading. No U.S. surface ASW ships in the immediate area of the I-172 contact.

A second (unidentified) Jap submarine detected SE of Lihue (Hawaiian Is) - the U.S. ASW TF sinking the RO-61 & I-153 has been dispatched from Johnston Is (after refuelling) to the contact location.

South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penhryn and Auckland, otherwise quiet.

Likely that Pillager has detected US transport TF's docked and unloading at Penhryn. I haven't made any PT-boats in awhile, maybe time to unload a few in Penhryn...

Unidentified Jap sub remains at Bora Bora.

Australia: Jap recon flights over Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. No reported ground or air combat.

Summary of Operations 5/10/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 7 days.

Sigint report entry for 5/10 indicates Jap 61st Division is now in Tokyo - this unit a new LCU in the Japanese OOB. I am expecting that Pillager will send 61 Division from Japan to garrison a Central or South Pacific base.

US carrier TF's remain on the U.S. west coast for 4/43 ship upgrades and refits, about 70% completed at this time. Carrier TF's will be reformed once all ships have finished repairs - CV Essex and 4 CVL's will be added to the six US fleet CV's now in service.

Central Pacific: Jap air patrols reported quiet at all locations (Kwajalein, Canton Is, Pago Pago, off Japanese home islands). No reported contacts between US subs and Japanese surface ships.

Unidentified Jap submarine detected off (W of) Johnston Is.

South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Auckland and Penhryn Is.

Operational report entries for 5/10 indicate that Pillager is probably now aware of US transport ship traffic at Penhryn. Several transport TF's arrived at Penhryn from the U.S. west coast and now unloading 43rd Division along with approx 20K supply - additional transport TF's from the U.S. are due to arrive at Penhryn with more LCU's and supply. My estimate on the situation at Penhryn anticipates at least a Japanese bombardment or surface combat TF being sent to Penhryn in a matter of days, also cannot exclude the possibility of a visit to Penhryn from the KB.

U.S. carrier forces are expected to remain unavailable for an estimated 30 days as they complete 4/43 ship upgrades, refit and re-organization. I am not planning to send heavy US surface naval forces to this area with the possiblity of the KB being sent southwards as most US bases in this area of the South Pacific theater do not have sufficient aircraft to adequately cover either transports or surface naval TF's against Jap carrier planes. Therefore, US countermeasures will mostly be of the "duck and run" variety - getting as many transports out of the area as quickly as possible at the first sign of approaching Jap naval forces (assuming there are any signs). Transports from the U.S. approaching or passing through the Penhryn area are now being delayed or rerouted until Jap naval forces have struck and departed, or it is confirmed that Jap naval forces are not coming.

Otherwise it's quiet.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek. No reported ground or air combat.

Most air reinforcements to Australia from the U.S. have by now arrived and disembarked in Sydney - these air units now repairing their planes back to operational status. Several transports from the U.S. with more air units are still enroute and expected to arrive in Australia shortly.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all report no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Dacca, Calcutta, Asansol.

RAF and Chinese air forces strike Jap base at Myitkyina. AAR follows.

12 x P-66 Vanguard bombing at 2000 feet
15 x Vengeance I bombing at 2000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hudson I recon over Mandalay reporting fighters on CAP, 33 aircraft (19 fighters), 4 Jap LCU's.
F-5A recon over Rangoon reports 1 Jap TF, 306 aircraft (108 fighters, 53 bombers), 17 Jap LCU's, heavy industry 10(183).

China: Jap recon flights over Chungking, Tuyun, Kweilin, Sining.

Light ground attack raids by both Chinese and Jap air forces continue. One Chinese ground attack strike hit and identified the Japanese 41st Division in hex 43,37 - previous location of 41 Division was Hankow, this LCU is believed to be moving into the front lines at Kweilin.

Japanese ground forces continue bombardments at Kweilin and hex 44,35 (Changsha-Kweiyang rail line). No report of casualties from either action.

Summary of Operations 5/12/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 6 days.

Central Pacific: US subs reporting light Jap air patrols near Kwajalein (G4M Betty, D4Y Judy, E13A1 Jake), the Canton Is area (G4M), at Pago Pago (G3M Nell, F1M2 Pete) and off the Japanese home islands (G5N Liz, E13A1) . No contacts with Japanese surface ships in any of these locations.

Five unidentified Japanese sub contacts detected north of Pearl Harbor, reports show all 5 Jap subs moving on a W or SW heading as if returning home from patrol. But where were they patrolling? Up to now, none of these subs had contacts with US ships, TF's or planes, no minefields have been detected. No matter... shortly there will be 10 or more ASW ships chasing each Jap sub, and swarms of planes as well. Situation map follows.

Wow, I can't believe he's running that close to Hawaii.  As Japan, I patrolled the CA-HI lanes, but coming within 10 hex of Hawaii is usually a pretty bad idea.

Summary of Operations 5/12/43 part deux.

South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Penhryn Is and Auckland. Otherwise quiet.

Penhryn Is remains on alert for a possible Japanese surface naval or carrier attack. US transports continue unloading ops at Penhryn but ready to depart immediately on the first sign of any Japanese approach.

A task force with USN 58th Seabees and 8-9K supply arrived at Aitutaki Is (north of Rarotonga). Landing operations are now underway with base construction to start as quickly as possible. Aitutaki Island is a beach hex but a very suitable location for construction of medium size base facilities.

Sigint report for 5/12 indicates Jap Hankow SNLF was transferred from China and now located on Tinian. Hankow SNLF was previously located at Ichang as of 8/17/42.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek. No reported air or ground combat.

The last transports bringing USAAF air units to Australia are now arriving in or approaching Sydney. Most USAAF air units already disembarked and presently repairing damaged aircraft to operational status.

Catalina I recon over Port Moresby reporting fighters on CAP (A6M3a & Ki-45), 7 Jap LCU's.
Hudson I recon over Darwin reports Ki-61 fighters on CAP, 2 Jap LCU's.

Japanese 19 Engineer Rgt was detected and attacked by a Chinese ground attack strike while moving just behind the Jap front lines. Probable destination of 19 Engineer Rgt appears to be Kweilin.

Japanese ground forces launch bombardment attacks at Kweilin and hex 44,35 (Changsha-Kweiyang rail line). The Jap 13th Division arrived in the front lines at Kweilin to reinforce the enemy attack. AAR's follow.

Feinder... Didn't realize you live just up the road from me. I'm Carrollwood area.

Pillager's subs off Hawaii were a surprise to me. There's no lack of US naval search planes flying about, it's amazing they didn't run into any of my transports or other ships, if they laid a minefield somewhere I would have found it by now. So what are or were these subs doing? There has to be some logic behind this, but what?

Margaritaville - I figured you live in Key West.

Yeah, Land o' Lakes is nice (move here from Town-n-Country in 2002).  Wife and I said we were going to drive north until we saw cows again, and buy a house (ended up being Land o Lakes).  Unfortunately, there aren't any more cows here anymore; and other than the expense of gas (I work across from International Mall), it's a nice area.

There are actually a few of us in Tampa area, I think about 6 from the boards.  One of these days, we'll have to meet for beer to watch a Bucs game or something.
