A complaint (which has been aired before)...

It never ceases to amaze me how damn perfect the Japs are at the beginning of the war. If you have one small friggin' cargo ship in the middle of 2300 square miles...a Jap sub will find it.

And then, later in the war, the shoes on the other foot. A lone Jap cargo ship in the middle of nowhere is easily found by the amazing Americans.

Throughout the rules it gives many, many instances of the miniscule chances that certain events occur. Then you play a game and find these "rare" occurences happening almost every game day.

There's something f*cked about the hard-coded rules.

Dec 22nd.

Nothing too dramatic today - however we have sen our first air combat. In an air raid over Kuching, 21 Hudsons came in at only 6,000 feet and bombed the airfield defended by 14 Zeros. 5 Hudsons were lost in exchange for 6 Zeros damaged...

Dec 23rd.

Action for today; Imperial Japanese troops entered an evacuated Brunei today, and landed on the island of Weda in the northern DEI, as well as taking Kuala Lumpur. Singapore however is in great shape and will be able to withstand a protracted seige.

Air attacks on Allied shipping near Palembang continued, as well as major ground combat developing near Wuchow China. A heavy Japanese assault at San Marcelino forced the retreat of the last Philippine unit in that area, while Manila suffered bombardment - but the troops in Manila are holding up just fine.

No Air to Air combat today - but that will be coming to an end soon.

Wake Island was bombed today as well (Yes- we still hold Wake).

For those of you having a hard time following our developments, here's the surprising elements of our game so far:

Dec. 21, 1941, and the Japs are on Guadalcanal and Tulagi, they've taken Baker Is., and they've landed at Attu. ATTU! Looks like we might be in for a long game. It appears the Japanese sacked their last overall commander in favor of someone with a little more elan.

That was about as bad as it gets. I've pulled the squadrons out of Singapore now, no use having them get shot to pieces like that. I really should have known better, flying CAP without radar.

On a related note, Betty/Nell presence has really picked up in the Singapore area, all transports are now being steered clear. My initial hope of getting everything out was thoroughly torpedoed.

No move has been made against Burma yet, I suspect I have until Singapore falls before he swings that way.

Prince of Whales and Repulse still on the prowl, though being mindful that the KB has not been seen in about 2 weeks.

More to come.

Are you using the Dutch Transport planes to pull out troops from Singapore to Palembang?? I usually start that as soon as possible.

I wish I could send in supplies from Palembang and take out troops....but that is for another patch.

Then, I sent in one ship TF of AK's to Sing to pull out troops. Usually, those Betty/Nell leave them alone.

Without revealing to much, because our worthy opponent has spies on this board, the ABDA is having a logistical nightmare. We pulled much more out of the P.I. than we ever have before, but the addition of these troops has led to a lot of problems with scheduling transports. And then the Bettys showed up...

Confidence is still high...just a little anxiety.

I was using any availible transport (under my command) to pull troops out, but he now has a Bomber base in Kuching, aswell as Khota Bharu, Kuantan, and soon to be Johore Bahru, with subs in what seems like every hex from Singapore to Java. Single ship TF's were getting picked off left and right, while escorted TF's were getting bombed all over.

Its OK though, we got troops out, and we have enough troops there to hold it for a while I think. I even managed to sneak in quite a bit of supply.

It's almost time to hunker down all over my end and wait for the Big Push.

Dec 26th,

It's been a couple of days since I posted. Not much has changed, most of the positions are the same - except Wake Is.

WE successfully evacuated Wake on the night of Christmas Eve (but for security reasons I jave not mentioned it til now)...quite a Christmas present for the Marines and civilians on Wake. The Japanese are landing there now (on Dec 27th) and they'll find the island deserted.

In China air combat is heating up, and we are finding that Chinese pilots in I-153's are no match for Japanese pilots flying Nates...

Well, Developing news; Japanese captured Malacca today, and a major ground battle is developing near Wuchow (this last appears to be a meeting engagement spiraling out of hand ..as Gettysburg did) we'll see how this develops in the coming days.

In other news - the Japanese did NOT land on Wake Is, the task force spotted there the previous day has moved on without debarking troops on Wake - strange indeed.

In the Philippines, the Americans securely hold the Clark Field area, Manila, and Bataan. The Northern Defense line doesn�t appear to be able to hold much longer.

In the Biggest surprise of the day - Japanese troops have landed at Luganville, very close to Noumea. Clearly the Japanese High Command has it's sites set on the USA-Australia Supply Line. Whether this can be severed and held remains to be seen...

Well here we are three weeks into the lastest contest of will. As my most worthy opponents have mentioned we are trying a different tack on this go round. Not to many surprises yet on their tactics. The counter attacks in the Philippines gave my generals a few sleepless nights but it would seem the situation is in hand. In Malaya the British have proved so far that they can out run my units. But the road has come to an end. I expect a stiff fight out of them from here on out. I am sure they will fight to the last Australian. In China the bandit units on my supply lines are not appreciated at all. The good treatment the American and Commonwealth POWs get are not what waits for them.
Hats off to Big B and crew for putting together the mod we are playing. I am sure he will pass on credit to others where due. Changes noticed so far:

1. Chinese bandits on my supply lines. Taking up time and energy best put elsewhere. Great addition to game. Dirty Rats
2. The additional defense added to Guam. Embarrased the NLF landed against them. Had to re-direct another unit to assist in the capture of the island. A big Banzai to the sailors and marines on guam.
3. We have not had that many A2A engagements yet. The large one over Singapore and the sweeps against the Chinese units came off much better than I was expecting with the changes made. We need several more to develope opinions on the a2a changes.

Back to my maps. Where is the AVG? How can they stand by and watch the destruction of Madame CKS's air force?

Japan Fan Club please feel free to comment on what goes on. We share this thread with the enemy so we can not really talk to much about what is planned in advance.

I can assure you that the British Empire fully intends to fight not only to the last Australian, but to the last Malayan, Indian, South African, Burmese and whatever other forces we can scrounge up to throw into the meatgri-... er I mean, stage in India for the great push back into Southeast Asia.

And then, later in the war, the shoes on the other foot. A lone Jap cargo ship in the middle of nowhere is easily found by the amazing Americans.

Throughout the rules it gives many, many instances of the miniscule chances that certain events occur. Then you play a game and find these "rare" occurences happening almost every game day.

There's something f*cked about the hard-coded rules.

Well, The japanese attacked again on Luzon - north of Clark Field, and were repulsed by the Philippine Army...not so fast!

In other news, the Japanese have landed at Rabaul, we evacuated the forces there some time ago(untenable), and they are expanding Tarawa...Hmmm ominus.

Yorktown is has now joined the Pacific Fleet, and we will endevor to give the IJN a warm reception at our next meeting.

ABDA here...

We had planned on trying a new strategy in this game...but then the few surprises from our Jap opponent were enough to make us go back to our old strategy. What the heck, we've never played a war out long enough to actually see the ABDA's plans come to fruition, so this is probably for the best.

In a previous game I evacuated mucho Allied forces from around the SW Pacific and payed a heavy price in AK's and AP's. In this game we've been even more agressive in our evacuation and have payed a heavy price also. But, surprisingly enough, it isn't hurting us that badly. Confidence is high...everything is still going as planned.

As long as the KB doesn't show up.

Dec 30th.

Well, in news for the day - Japanese forces have seized the island of Singkep between Palembang and Singapore, in an effort to shut off traffic between the two. Also seized by Japanese forces today are Wewak and Rabaul. Fortunately for the Allies - both of those locations have been evacuated prior to the arrival of the Japanese.

Fighting continues in the Philippines, the lines remaining stable for the past few days (American/Filipino forces holding Manila, Clark Field, Bataan, Tuguegarao, and the mountains to the west. On Mindanao we still hold Cagayan, as well as most of the islands in the central Philippines.

Wake Is. was bombarded last night by the lone destroyer Shiratsuyu, and a Japanese surface action group of cruisers and destroyers attacked and sank burning allied ships abandoned off Amboina.

The Air War proper has yet to get too active so far, though Japanese planes are bombing in ever increasing numbers - Allied response to date has been very weak.

Dec 31st.

Well, New Year's Eve 1941 sees the Japanese begining strong efforts to batter Singapore and the Philippines by aerial bombardment (knew that was coming sooner or later).

Also Japanese troops landed today at Milne Bay and Efate - obviously trying to put a stranglehold on the US-Aus lifeline.

Be that as it may - Dec 41 is finally over - and with it, one point of the blasted Zero Bonus!

For those wondering why there hasn't been much air to air combat, there are a couple of reasons;
1) Quite logically, the Allies are husbanding resources for better use rather than needless loss.
2) Range - most combat ranges between current bases preclude sending fighters anywhere.
3) British aircraft cannot upgrade to frontline fighters until May 42. So the frontline Hurricanes sitting in the pool cannot be touched - while the Brit's are forced to continue to use Wirraways and Lysanders as frontline combat aircraft (not a very cheery prospect)

So to sum up, for those waiting to see a large sample of aircombat results from this mod...be a little patient.

Happy New Year Allied Soldiers and Sailors

We send best wishes to the soldiers and sailors holding out in Malaya and the Philippines. You have been assigned the task of delaying the inevitable. Our General Staff has offered generous terms but have been turned down. We will now start the process of destroying your abiltiy to resist. No need to die to hold out for a few more days. Lay down your arms and accept the good treatment we have already shown to our prisoners of war. (Too bad there is not a surrender button in this game)

Wake is now property of the IJN. The Americans abandoned the base as reported. Recon planes kept showing movement on the island, but it turned out to be dozens of deserters.

Success has created a problem for the Admirals of the IJN. The Emperor is making his vacation plans. He is talking about hunting bear in Alaska or marlin fishing off Australia. What could be next, tiger hunting in India.

Chinese bandits are a little more under control. Soon to be ex bandits.

Those P-40 losses (both types) seem awful low for 12/41.

The P-40 losses have been so low because my worthy opponents have not used them so far. They have gone Apache and hit the hills waiting to ambush me if I get careless. They know I hate the AVG and will make a full effort to destroy them whenever they make themselfs known. My Zeros and Bettys sit ready for the show. At least thats my side of the story. Perhaps they see it different.

Yep! pretty much agree!!

Also NY59Giants, another reason that the losses are low is that we started a DEC 8th game, so all of the aircraft destroyed on DEC 7th are not included in the totals (like the 50 P-40s lost in the Philippines on day one).

Evacuations still underway. Ship losses have leveled out. Our main concern at the moment is supply. The men are eating nothing but coconuts and sawgrass and washing it down with Foster's. Thank God the Foster's makes even sawgrass palatable.

Ther Aussies in PM are itching to go out and kick the Jap bastards out of Milne. Their enthusiasm is astounding. Confidence and morale is very high...and thanks to the Foster's so are the men.

Well one month into Big B's Mod. Even with the changes to a2a, in the few air battles the IJN/IJA aircraft still seem to be having their way( 7.5 to 1 a2a advantage). Althougth the Army's new super pursuit plane only managed a tie with its first encounter with the Chinese airforce.

The Navy has the Army ashore and in position to start the siege of Singapore and the last remaining US positions in the Philippines. The Navy's NLF will continue to keep up the advance and occupy forward bases for later use. The Brits seem to want to fight it out south of Rangoon. Will soon be pushing into areas the Dutch will have to fight for or start learning Australian. The KB and US carriers are MIA along with the AVG. Will be looking forward to breaking out into the Indian Ocean. Hey Big B do some of that map posting magic stuff!
