Hi guys, Fresh back from a withering vacation on the San Antonio Riverwalk, I managed to save some ideas that the heat and alcohol didn't bake out of me. Here is the most important one. New Security needs for SPWAW v 3.0 I have always wondered why, when starting a new PBEM game do you have to waste one round of email just to get the password situation straightened out. Don't get me wrong Matrix guys, I LOVE THIS GAME. I play SPWAW more than ANY other game since it's release, but it just seems silly to me to waste one round of emails just to set the passwords. Why can't the first person run his turn then set his password then send it to the second person who then runs his turn and sets his password. I'm a hardware technician and I know that forever, the hardware guys have blamed the software guys and vice versa, but can't something be done without having to resort to a non-password protected game? Second, I have a decent PC at work that runs SPWAW comfortably. Is there a way to allow folks to have a password protected game, BUT still allow them to play that same game on more than one machine. Example: Mike (roommate) and I start a PBEM game at the apartment on Saturday. We each play a couple of turns over the weekend and then we work. At work, sometimes I finish early so thinking ahead, I emailed the turns from my homepc to my workpc. But I can't play them there since I get a security violation when I try to open them. Honestly, the ONLY reason Mike and I use passwords is to make sure that neither of us opens up the wrong side, and passwords prevent that from happening. We often have several SPWAW games going on simultaneously so having the password protection helps. I can't believe that we are the only folks playing SPWAW that use the passwords solely for that purpose. So, Matrix folks, is there anyway you can help out us folks that would like to play this game on more than one machine and still let us have passwords to help us keep the games straight? Maybe by adding one more choice like "Non secure, password protected game" or something like that. Ok, I've run out of hot air, NONE OF THIS WAS MEANT TO BE A FLAME JOB! I love this game and will continue to play it LONG AFTER Homeworld and SFC have lost their luster. Keep up the good work guys! ------------------ Sincerely, The Defenseman "Offense wins battles, but defense wins wars"

Pbem security is one of those "no-win" situations. That is a big reason we have striven so hard to bring online play to SP. I suppose were we sufficiently clever we could eliminate the "password shuffle" but right now we just don't have time alloted to rework the security scheme. The installation checks are to prevent folks from moving the game between multiple installations and playing each in trn and sending back the "best result". Currently the only "Cheat" that we have been able to find is to deliberately crash the game in mid stride and start over. But this means you are stuck with the last redo, vice being able to choose the best. And in most cases the "turn counter" catches this. Closing this security hole means that anytime the game crashes (or a malfunction like encyrption failure occurs) the game would be unrecoverable, which we decided was to big a playability problem. One line games alert you that you have different OObs, but let play continue despite if desired. If you play through in one sitting there are only VERY esoteric ways to cheat that are beyond 99 and 44/100 of players. We will see if there is any way to have an "intermediate level of security, but right now you will have to pay attention to what side you playing in which game...
