Interesting this board can have a discussion about game exploits and loopholes but posts about CoG have zero or limited responses.

It seems to me very few people still play this game and even fewer come here to post. Its only people that have just found out about the game (like me) that come here during their learning phase. The game designers even post to say they are working on other things atm.

Anyone know of other CoG forums out there that have a reasonable sized community?

I'm beginning to think that the replayability factor of this game is low. Certainly I'm finding I'm spending too much time at the strategic level (which gets to be a chore) and way too little time in tactical battles (which is 90% of the fun for me).

It would seem to be a game that loses its shine quickly. Which is a real pity as the game concept is something that really appeals to me and has such a huge potential if implemented well.

I think one hassle you may be seeing is, that some of the "major" talkers are also Beta testers

so one reason, some of us do not post here as much, is we are on other games at the moment

(so some of us who are Major COG fans are working on FOG and other games)

I do try and watch this forum if there are questions, I can help with, but most times others who are here jump in answer before I see them

I know during testing of the patches, I must of played some 75 games of COGs and I still enjoy the game

That's only a temporary situation. We plan to return to COG in the very near future, I assure you, and are by no means abandoning it. Very soon "Forge of Freedom" will be in the hands of Matrix and the Oompa-Loompas who burn it onto CD's and stick those in their plastic boxes, and then COG follow-up will be our top priority, before turning to any new projects.

I adore this game, and have enjoyed it solitaire for over a year. I am not a beta tester.

I think the re-playability of the game is excellent. I have tried every Nation multiple times now, on different game settings, and also try to influence the course of the game via treaties and such.

For example, I tried to play a "historical" game by playing France and limiting my wars to more historical time periods and events, and used the Treaties mechanism to minimize wild wars (like those crazy Swede-Turk wars, for example). I was only partially successful, but it went fairly historical until about 1810...

I am currently playing the game with 5 others, TCP/IP. Yes, we know of the problems (bugs) and are trying to work through and around them. It is doubtful we can, but until CoG fixes these bugs (and I do not believe TCP/IP bug fixes are a priority, since few play the game that way anyway), then we do what we can.

After 2 false starts, we are in March 1806. I am France. I am deep into Austria but the war hangs in the balance. The Russians have commited their entire Army to the war and the Prussians force me to maintain 100,000 troops on their border as a guarantee of neutrality. I managed to convince the unplayed Turks (via treaty mechanism) to attack Russia; but the Russians have chosen to ignore their attacks, it seems (I can't tell for sure; I can't see Russian provinces to know what's going on there).

It's a LOT different with humans behind the actions of other nations. My French siege of Hanover resulted in the "gamey" tactic I refer to in the other post, by the way...

By the by - the unplayed powers are Turkey, Spain, and Sweden.

The replayability factor is high, I've owned this game for over a year and still pick it up. However I find it's often difficult for a simple player like me to answer some of the very detailed questions because the game doesn't lend itself well to giving people that kind of information. (One of my two major criticisms of the game). So you need a beta-tester or a developer to answer em and most of them are focusing on Forge of Freedom at the moment. Personally, I do measure their continuing support of this game, especially considering there are still bugs, as a determining factor if I want to buy the next one.

If you really want people to start answering "I don't know" on all the questions, then you'll get a lot of those for awhile.

Gag order is in effect for FOF, but if you like that era, pick up the game when it comes out, I loved it as soon as I started testing it (not that Eric or Gil will think so)

COG is also great and also has a lot of replayablity

if it is still has bugs in it you can see (others may not be bugs but not understanding how the game works ?) then they are HARD ones to find and fix

those guys and the testers did a lot of work trying to get the patches checked and done

some times it comes down to style of play, at times, I had to stop playing as I do and try to do things I read others doing, to finally find and report some of the bugs they were seeing

I beleive that if they can find and fix what else may be wrong, they will do so when they get the chance
