With some invasions, you land your combat troops first, take the place, ship them out, bring in the construction boys and the base force and start the supply runs etc.

When you take PM (or any base within range of allied airpower) you go in with half the world packed on your transports.  you put all your troops ashore, supply them, and they stay.  maybe later you rotate the combat forces - but rest assured I'll land at PM with the strength to crush whatever Raver can scare up out of Oz (not a lot at this stage).  he gets an extra regiment at

Status: offline 		Actually it is MY choise as to what happens in PM, I will either CHOOSE to hold it or CHOOSE not to either way it is my choice. Now the correct thing for you to say would have been :-
" Well that's just fine and dandy Mr Raver. I accept your choice but I do feel, and you understand I am saying this with no animosity, that regardless of what choice you do make I must do my best to still try and win upon the feild of battle".

Essentially things have gone into a bit of a lull as things are settling down somewhat. Another sub got damaged at pearl (this time for no gain to me!) and I consolidated a few more little bases around the place.  I've landed troops at Balikpapan - they'll take the place without issue.  No problems there.

Status: offline 		More fun and games this turn - I take Balikpapan, stranding the allied troops at Samarinda, between my two Naval Guard Units at Balikpapan, and the ever triumphant division from Tarakan - about to arrive from the east.  They're doomed.  I also take Kuantan (with the division from khota Bharu) and bombard PM a little.

Raver lets me destroy planes on the ground (he also lost som crappy Blenhiem night fighters that would have eventually turned into beaufighters) so that shows me he is low on political points.

Ground combat at Rahaeng - this was just a mistake, I moved the mixed brigade (exhausted) in first, without waiting for the armoured unit or the entire division about a day behind them, and they auto shock attacked (grr).  Few actual troop losses for me to date (have lost 26 army points so far to more than 1200 of Raver's) but this does "knock out" a lot of my mixed regiment's firepower.

Status: offline 		Ship to Ship losses, since Raver-the-lazy couldn't be bothered to post what he said he would.

Of my 20 sunk ships (120 points worth approx) 6 were sunk by Boise and 7 were sunk by the Midway coastal defence battery.  Two were sunk by the Wake coastal defence unit, one by a sub, and one by depth charges.

PoW is still out there - probably steaming around with that relic Warspite and/or Hermes, but I'll see them in the Bay outside betty range from Bangkok only.  I saw them evade past Malaya to the north, but could be Raver has turned them "south" to Perth or northern oz to threaten shipping in the solomons.  Probably would take a fraction too long (I've got Rabaul and lots of nells/betties Mavises now, lots of little bases to base float planes at as well - probably takes too long for PoW to move, refuel move all that way etc and still get to the solomons PNG area before my airpower moved in).

Might see her in the defence of Port Moresby - not that I have any intention of invading the place

Status: offline 		The battle at Rahaeng was a classic case of Luskan getting too greedy I am getting a tad uncomfortable about Luskan talking about my PPs....they are none of his darned business. I'm still very happy with the amount of DDs that ratbrain has lost. Now if I could only improve upon it .



The fast build-up of rabaul has almost decided my mind on what to do in regards to PM. Even if it does fall it is neither here nor there, I have "other" plans.

Status: offline 		Other plans? Raver doesn't have a lot of options (which allied player does in December 1941) - but when he does start to advance he'll try something unpredictable.

In war news today Raver's subs got a second hit in for the war - fortunately the transport is going to be fine.  I conduct a bit of ASW with ok results, and I bombard the snot out of Port Moresby (early Xmas present for Raver).  He knew I had heavy fleet units in the area (by virtue of the number of amphibious landing I used to take the solomons).  Shame not to put them to use.  We'll see how far behind my invasion shows up ;)

In other news  that crafty smartass bastard has played his northern chinese cards perfectly.  He punched my in the nose last turn at Yenen when I prematurely attacked, and then this turn, when my whole army is on spec, ready to go, prepped . . . his main force had already left.  Obviously this ****s me for obvious ****ing reasons.  Crushing that force and routing them is more important than Yenen (sp?) - once routed they stay routed and never really regain their combat potention - such is the allied supply situation in china - Raver has preserved a good portion of his striking force and they're racing up the road towards Lanchow - they'll hang a left and either appear at the crossroads, or all the way back at Homan.  I am furious with my "victorious" generals and explained that tactically and strategically this operation was a failure.

This turn I took Taiping, Tuguegarao (Raver only half tried to fight for the place anyway - he'll make his Phillipines stand somewhere down the road at Bataan, Clark or Manila.  On that note, he will probably bail out of Naga before I cut him off from Lamon Bay.

Status: offline 		Another turn, something strange at Rahieng - I had an eng unit show up to reinforce my mixed regiment (ARM and Division in the next few days too!) but when it showed up it did a lone, individual shock attack . . . got slapped for it.  Must be something strange in the code about a jap base taken by the allies and then re-occupied (but not taken yet) but the japs?

Apart from that, and one crap allied air raid in the SRA this turn was totally bloodless! I've got my troops onto their R & R rotation while HQ units, Eng units and base forces work overtime to get supplies and support to those INF and ARM units to re-activate the knocked out elements etc.  Very happy with my force levels in my hubs - they're brimming with troops, warships, fuel, supplies, fighters, naval bombers, recon craft - they're all perfect springboards for whatever direction I want to send my troops.

The surrounded enemy troops at Samarinda will cop it in the next turn or two, and then all of Borneo except the western edge is mine.  Samarinda and Tarakan (unlike Brunei) were captured with massive stockpiles of oil and/or resources.  The oil wells and reserouce "wells" were all taken undamaged or mostly at most of my conquests so far.  In Malaya I've captured enough supply to allow me to cancel (well . . . redirect) the uber supply TF headed in to Songkhia. 

In the Pacific, I'm also pleased with my hubs - I've got 100k+ supplies and 100k+ fuel at Palau, Truk, Kwaj and about 75k of each at Rabaul.  Wake is healthy, Marcus Island is healthy, and my engineers are reporting excellent progress at Toroshima, Bonin Island and Iwo Jima (fortifying, building, stockpiling there for the end game - that way I can cycle my tired engineer units home and move fresh ones out to expand my construction sphere outwards).

I also diverted a group of 6-10 contruction Eng units to Hongkong from the Southern Area Army - they disembarked last turn and I forgot to mention them.  They will begin with HongKong (which I inherited as a shattered useless wreck of a place - these guys will do the construction work here - leaving my two Chinese area army Engineer Regiments free to . . . do other things.

Operation Elation has completed its first preparation phase (there are two!) ahead of schedule.  This isn't going to mean much because that just means my forces will have to wait longer for the second preparation phase to complete.  More to come soon.

Status: offline 		This is the hardest part for the allied player, you have little to work with and even less that you can afford to spare, but even so every fiber of your soul screams to hurt the jap in one way or another, but you also have to try and husband your forces.

Noumea is now well reinforced so if ratbrain decides to come that far south he is going to bleed. (mind you it drained all of my PPs to do it)

Ahhh.....that is the dreaded IJN sloop designed to sneak up with little or no noise. The main draw back is that depending on what tack you are on it can mask your main guns.

Status: offline 		Incredibly quiet turn - 3 martins take off from Samarinda and try to sink the Kinugasa and miss . . . that is it.

I unload at Biak and take a few other little solomons/northern PNG little bases, and Raver and I are racing around maddly rushing fuel, supply and resource/oil left right and centre to set things up for the next stage.

Both sides needed a breather - certainly my "periphery" operations have moved a whole lot faster than my main PI and Malayan and Burman campaigns have.  Results will come from those soon enough.

Status: offline 		3rd quiet day in a row.  I've got damaged ships going left right and centre, I've got transports going all over the place - I planned my opening assault with great care - however I did not have nearly as careful a plan for the second phase of this war.  Apart from Elation I've been throwing most of my moves together ad-hoc.  Most of my troops have had three days rest out of a promised week or so and the results are encouraging - disruption and fatigue have dropped across the board, and many knocked out elements are back in fighting trim.

This turn the 55th took Samarinda, and the allied units retreated into the junge to start a 5 or 6 hex journey to Banjarmarsan.  I'll get there well before they do.  other than that, I took a few more northern PNG bases (these should all just auto - switch to japanese control when I take Rabaul) and my lumbering hammers roll on at Malaya and PI towards their objectives.  They're also getting a bit tired - and will need a day or two to rest and re organise before clobbering their final objectives.

At Raheing (sp) my armoured unit, turn up, did its stupid auto shock attack for no reason (few losses thankfully, but huge disruption and fatigue all of a sudden) and now has to sit still for a few days to get their breath back.  I'm not pleased with this at all.  Will be easier for my coastal Burmese force to cut the place off near Rangoon.

There is a bit of reorganising going on at the moment - obviously I'm trying to get ships supplies and men into place to scare the socks of Raver with my next move.  Cagey bastard is rushing his Chinese troops around - can't tell in which directions yet - but looks like he's going for the traditional holding action at Kwelin or WUchow while his troops filter back into the interior.  once there . . .well they're probably going to Burma.

Elation is underway! Finally.  Hope to see some results from that soon.

Status: offline 		The reason that your units are "auto" attacking is because it is a river crossing.....any unit that moves over a river into a hex with an enemy unit will shock attack.  Hence the reason for me pulling back to the OTHER side of the river.

Status: offline 		Another ghost turn as things stay quiet.  I bomb the burma rifles in the jungle and kill off 64 of them - not a bad start.  I wear down Hangchow's fortifications again this turn (I do have a rather big army there - Raver unfortunately isn't actually trying to hold the place.  He's pulling those chinese troops west in excellent order - Homan is absolutely bustling and i've got some recon going on to sort out where he's going to try and base them before the big push) and the troops will need a rest.

I take yet another empty base in the middle of nowhere.  I've had to pull some of my NLF units back to Rabaul and Kendari and Truk to rest - they've taken base after base since the war began and are almost as low as 50% in some cases.  The good news here is I've got lots of new SNLF units that have taken over garrison duties (and a lot of base forces around too - I'm certainly not short on them at this point of the game.

Operation Elation steams towards its distant target - dodging a few allied subs in the area without being detected.  This punch isn't due to land for quite a while however.

In Malaya my troops have had a two days rest, before resuming their long march - I had hoped to be in Singapore and Clark Airfield by new years (that turn was the 30th) but seems my boys will spend new years on the road.  Raver is using his Burma River defence to try and hold me up - now I understand his deployment outside of Rangoon a bit better.  I'll be bringing in some airpower to sort a bit of that out - but I've got a plan for something else in that area as well.

A minor operation - code named Rooftop kicks off this turn - if there are any results, they'll be in tomorrow.

No matter how many troops are across the river, every one that reinforces the other side has to do a shock attack.

I know Luskan regards his turn 1 as a disappointment, but he's still advancing very nicely in the SRA. Raver, I'm curious: why didn't you negotiate a house rule limiting the extent of Luskan's attacks on turn 1? E.g., limit to the historical area, or maybe Mogami's "only attack within air support" rule or something. It sorta makes me cringe to see the IJN attack Borneo and Kendari on turn 1 -- places Cap & Gown made me fight for tooth and nail in January 1942! :)

Hi Grotius - we play the game for enjoyment, within the loose bounds of histocial plausibility.  The game itself gets us in the ballpark area of plausible/possible, and we only make house rules to limit gamieness.  We aren't after a historical simulation, we're after and enjoyable game, and the purpose of that game is to smash Raver to a pulp, repeatedly, and then scrape up his remains and feed him to stray cats.

That said if I wanted to play a historic turn 1 - I'd turn that option on

The japs achieved total surprise on turn 1 - so they should be allowed to get in their biggest sucker punch that they can.  After that, it is all downhill and going the allies way (I will always go for a better game over a more truthful simulation, which is why I play stock!).  I don't think it is fair (note - wouldn't be implausible) for me to use LBA to torp ships in Manila and Singapore harbour on turn 1, just because then Raver would have nothing to play with except APs and AKs for 6 months.  After Turn 1 is a different matter.

Lots of people playing PBEMs have very similar house rules for the same reasons.  When I play the allies, I suggest the exact same house rules and love watching the Red units steamroll the map.

Firstly, Operation Elation has misfired.  I'm not sure how, but I have had to stick this operation on hold (this is the second operation I've started and had to pause halfway in so far this game - must be loosing my touch/nerve).  Elation will continue, but will be at least a week delayed as I obviously hadn't sorted out my supply issues properly.

Secondly, I'm pleased to announce a pair of joint operations, code named Bert & Boris.  As usual I can't really reveal much about them until after the fact (but I'm sure if Raver has a think, he knows exactly what Bert and Boris are - Elation too for that matter). 

This turn had a bit more action, with my taking yet another little base or two, bombarding the crap out of Singkawang and Raver's boys out of Singapore smacking a MSW at Kuantan (damaged the AP too, but the supplies made it, and that is what matters).  I also tried a night port attack on Soerbaja but it didn't work in the slightest.

No news in Luzon or the PI or in Burma for that.

In China Raver is playing silly buggers by trying to send individual chinese units behind the front to cause havoc.  He's just getting them killed.
