I am seeing more Allied fighters in the air over Hawaii. Any day now I expect them to become active and try to strike back. That's when the 48 Zeroes and 60 Nates ( which will be upgrading to Mikes as soon as possible) at Hilo will come into play. It'll also act to divert fighters and bombers from China which is extremely important for me... I also expect a carrier raid here momentarily.

I gambled that the Allied air force would be set to naval attack given that I put the two CVLs into a naval TF yesterday. I gambled and lost. These two CVLs will now certainly sink. I've gotten all the planes off but it is still a pity to see them sink. In his efforts to sink these CVLs the second wave of the invasion has been allowed to land freely and I think that Jagdfluger is going to pay for this. By week's end fully 16 division equivalent will be ashore and that should prove sufficient to take all of India even without the 3 division equivalents of the third wave.

Unfortunately it'll still be a few days before I can upgrade the Nates here to Mikes. Until then I will just have to swallow the necessary shipping losses. These ships are bringing 16,000 tons of supplies to Hilo, supplies which are badly needed, especially as I've had to re-route a couple of supply convoys to Wake to properly provision it for the bombing campaign against Wake.

Lots of losses but nothing significant. These troops are still due to be relieved in the next 3 or 4 days and will continue to tie down significant portions of the enemy force. 13 enemy units are located at Poona with an additional 10 units at Bombay. In contrast only 3 enemy units are stationed at Karachi. One of these will be the Karachi fortress, another will be an aviation unit and the third will be an infantry combat unit. If it is only Brigade-strength then it may well be worth speculatively hurling a few divisions ashore into the teeth of the coastal defences. It'll certainly be a threat Jagdfluger has to honour.

Meanwhile in China operation "draw the SOBs eastward" continues apace. Nanchang is next up to be abandoned and once that falls I will abandon everything east of and south of Shanghai ( but not including Shanghai). My strategic concept here is as follows:
1. to draw the Chinese ever westward and, potentially, northward... This essentially boils down to drawing them away from Hong Kong and the region to the west of it.

2. to destroy the resources and productive capacity in the cities of eastern China - thus reducing their garrison requirements throughout the rest of the war. This will also mean that when the Allies do retake India and China in 43 and 44 they will be utterly unable to sustain a significant strategic bombing campaign from China due to lack of indigenous supplies.

3. to increase the Chinese vulnerability to a sudden thrust into the vitals in the west.

Lots and lots of casualties being incurred here. I have been pulling cadres of units out by Mavis Express so that when he attacks I won't lose entire units and can rebuild them by the end of the year.

Well now THIS was unexpected. In the middle of the ocean one of my convoys bringing reinforcements ( mainly base force and naval station troops) to my Central Pacific holdings manages to run smack into the middle of an enemy battlefleet. It looks like these are the least damaged survivors of the forces at Pearl Harbour. Obviously the ran norh-westward following my massacre of the forces at Midway. I am surprised to see them still heading toward the Home Islands though. Maybe this is a gambit to see just how strong my defences are? Well, time to let them in close before spotting them. Feigning poor recon coverage at this time could pay major dividends at a later stage.

Not bad, the CD unit does quite a job on the Soviet DDs heading for Alaska. The DD Baku is later confirmed as sunk but, really, the Soviet DDs are too weak to be much of a threat so whatever happens to them isn't too important. Their relative weakness will, sooner rather than later, condemn them to an early demise.

Once my transports have finished unloading at Hilo I will begin moving these forces out of Lahaina. The Americans have moved an entire regiment into Lahaina and weakened PH by as much. This is a really poor decision on Jagdfluger's part as he should try to hold one or two things strongly rather than many points with minimal force.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IJN Sasebo NGF Naval Guard Unit Wiped Out at Luganville [New Heb] by attrition.
A significant cadre, about 50% of the force, got away.

To give an example of the strength of the ASW campaign which is being waged almost unmentioned by the IJN I should point out that today my naval search missions attacked and hit 5 separate enemy submarines with 6 different aerial attacks and one enemy submarine was noted to have succumbed to wounds inflicted several days previously.

Below you can see the area in which my transport convoy ran into the enemy battlefleet.

Hmm, the Zeroes did an excellent job but there were just too many fighters and many managed to break through and shot down quite a lot of my bombers. Time to withdraw most of my planes from Hilo and concentrate on defence for a while. Once that's done I can bring KB in to smash Pearl Harbour's airfield once again and rack up another 100+ Allied planes in a single day.

More attacks out of Tavoy etc. Of course all that's happening is the picking of low-hanging fruit here. It is easy to hop around from airfield to airfield along the interior picking up a few ships here or there. We'll have to see how things proceed when resistance is tougher.

Cadre evacuation here continues also. I'm happy to let them take this atoll though as I can bypass it on my return AND it is within torpedo range of my own Level 4 airfields and, as such, will require sacrifice to resupply.

The last of the two damaged CVLs at Colombo have succumbed to their wounds. This is a major stroke of luck for Jagdfluger but, at the same time, the fact that I now have 12 divisions and 5 Tank Regiments ashore in India is the most important factor here.

I also just did a quick check on enemy naval forces. 408 enemy ships have been destroyed ( with about 20 British ships docked in Bombay and Karachi just waiting for the hammer to fall) so far in the 48 days since the war has began with my submarines accounting for an incredible 25 enemy ships destroyed, including 1 CL and 4 DDs with at least as many enemy ships being damaged. 2 friendly submarines have been lost so far while 38 enemy submarines have been destroyed.

He's still testing things out. Obviously he wants to try to force an automatic retreat once my forces are relieved but if he tries for an auto-retreat and fails he is going to be in a world of hurt and invite a Shock Attack on the next turn... something I think he is aggressive enough to risk. It would, however, be a suboptimal choice on his part.

I should also point out that S-51 was sunk at Johnston Island today following multiple attacks by my Kates and Vals. It turns out that this is the 39th Allied sub sunk so far. 2 additional submarines were also hit today.

In addition I have a suspicion that I've found the US BB TF trying to sneak past Etoforu Jima on its way to the Soviet Union. I've moved some Bettys to a Level 4 airfield in Manchukuo - it will serve a dual purpose as an offensive platform AND bait - bait protected by over 70 of my Mikes and a load of barely trained ( 30 Exp or so) Jeans to a Level 2 airfield near the US fleet. I doubt the Jeans will even launch but if they do it will prove useful ( albeit expensive ) live training for them.

Why sneak BB's to Russia , I cant see any point unless he's planning to invade japan from Vladivostok.

Seems like a suicide mission for them imo.

I don't think that the term "pull back" is part of Nemo's vocabulary.

The "battlefleet" may well be a TF of some subs (would make sense to station some old S-Class subs in Russia) or some AK's loaded with supplies...

Both players have lost far too many ships (IMHO, speaking from the point of view of someone who has lost less than 70 Allied ships in a PBEM that is in 1944).

It looks like the TF on its way to the Soviet Union comprises APs and AKs along with escorts ( at least I've only identified APs and AKs and an Armed Merchant Cruiser ). On the other hand it looks like he has sneaked another convoy, comprising tankers, into Petropavlovsk - probably to refuel his BB TF ( that is supposition on my part obviously but I think it is also reasonable supposition.

As to China and the Soviet Union.
Well in China Operation "Draw Them East" will continue. It will allow me to considerably shorten the line I have to defend, shore up the defences against the Soviets by freeing some units from the Chinese theatre of operations AND set the Chinese theatre of operations up for my offensive later in the year. The cost is the resources and HI I will lose as the Chinese advance but since I don't require those HI and resources things should work out pretty well. Plus when I retake China my garrison requirements will be infinitesmal due to the complete destruction of HI and resources. So, really, it is a win/win proposition for me ( except for the lost resources and HI... which aren't really an issue).

As to the Soviet Union. Well, I'm going to TRY to fight it out on the border in the Soviet Union but I'm not sure how possible that is as I've never, yet, faced a major Soviet offensive and am worried about how my Japanese forces will stack up to the Chinese.

Kereguelen,
Well I always find it interesting that people seem to have the idea that I won't pull back etc. Sure when I attack I try to hit as hard as possible but operational art is all about stringing together a pattern of acceptances and declinations of combat in order to gain advantage. That simply isn't possible if one isn't willing to pull back on occasion. In any case I plan to pull back from all but 5 Chinese cities which should settle the issue of whether or not the strategic withdrawal is within my remit for once and for all.

Do you mind me asking why you say both sides have lost too many ships? True the Allies have lost over 400 ( but they receive over 5,500 ships) and the Japanese have lost over 80 ( but they get almost 3,000). I think that the context is important insofar as those 80 ships hae bought me the DEI, Port Moresby, Guadalcanal, the Pacific including a foothold in Hawaii and India. As with all things the price can only be assessed as worthwhile or excessive when the return on this investment is taken into account. I truly am interested why you think 80 ships is too much to pay for those holdings + the horrific losses I've inflicted on his merchant and battle fleet. I may be missing something, to be honest though I think that once I pay the hundred ships for India, the DEI and the Pacific that my losses will tend to fall markedly as I'll be able to phase future advances such that they can be covered, in series, by KB.

The Nates, again, prove themselves completely incapable of even meeting unescorted bombers on a one to one basis. Fortunately as my fighter production continues to increase ( over 200 Zeroes, almost 200 Mikes and over 100 Oscar Is per month) I am continuing large-scale conversion from the outclassed Nates.

Interesting. I wanted to test how well the Me-264s would do in an unescorted raid. These Me-264s flew from Tokyo and while the losses were high they withstood the Wildcats relatively well, shooting down two of their number. Once I have enough Me-264s to mount massed raids I think I should be able to close any field within range whenever I want, a suitable counterweight to the American heavy bombers.

Unfortunately I lost the combat replay for January 28th but the main thing that happened was that a surface combat TF went in to Nanumea and caught 1 MSW and 2 AKs there. One of the Aks and the MSW were sunk while the other AK was driven off. Friendly forces sustained no damage. On the 29th these same forces were used to begin evacuating troops from Nanumea via Fast Transport TF.

My bettys continue to refuse to attack the enemy convoy heading for the Soviet Union so, instead, I've ordered KB to make for the area. Soon after the beginning of February I should be able to greatly increase the cost of the Allied operations in the north. Once that's done I'll refuel using a tanker convoy which is loading fuel at Tokyo and will then swing down by Hawaii in order to close the airfield there once again and to provide close escort for an important resupply convoy heading for Hilo.

The report above is an error. Basically the Kyokko Maru hit a mine going into Colombo but the other 3 transports sank due to damage inflicted in previous battles all over the map. One sank near Batavia after being torpedoed by Beauforts while another sank as a result of an earlier pounding delivered by the enemy BB TF lurking south-east of Tokyo and yet another succumbed to bomb damage. Whatever killed them the point is that a lot of support troops went down with them. Ah well, omellettes and egg breaking and all that.

Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor [Oahu] , at 114,72

I decided to take a chance and order a sweep of Pearl Harbour. My idea is to drain the defenders at PH of their fighters such that they are unable to properly escort any bomber raids on Hilo. Unfortunately for this to be a viable strategy I would need to be able to maintain a strong CAP over Hilo while at the same time conducting sweeps. Unfortunately the resupply convoy I brought to Hilo got so savaged that by the time it unloaded the supplies which survived only 19,000 tons was present on Hilo, 1000 tons short of the 20,000 I needed to convert my Nate squadrons into Mikes. Soryu has therefore been detached from KB and is ferrying planes back to Kwajalein where they can convert to Mikes, be rushed to within ferry range of Hilo and fly into Hilo. Once that's done I'll have my solid core of 60 Mikes flying CAP and I can routinely run Zero sweeps of Pearl Harbour. Until then though my options will be very limited and I will have to spend the majority of my time being purely defensive.

I'll try an attack here tomorrow. All things considered I think I should get a 1:1 and begin the process of dropping the fort levels. Once they begin to go down and I begin pushing Allied Brigades backward those Brigades will rapidly become combat ineffective. In this way the Allied attempt to forward-deploy and stop me soon after I land works very much in my favour as it allows me to defeat them in detail and, by the time I run into their second line of defence the forces committed to the first line will have lost so much of their strength in these forced retreats as to be useless.

Interesting, a tanker. My recon reports quite a number of the ships at Petropavlovsk are either transports or tankers. It would make sense for him to be trying to build up Petropavlovsk as a base from which to interdict my northern axis of operations BUT doing it in such a brazen manner is highly risky. I see two possibilities:
a) he is willing to run massive risks and lose his shipping en masse as he plans to rely on Allied productive profligacy to make good his losses or
b) this is not entirely planned and he is simply rerouting units which were due to reinforce his forces at Midway such that they don't have to return to base fully loaded.

Either way KB is on the way and has been strengthened by the addition of two CVLs and the almost complete replenishment of its fighter and strike groups.

12 of my Bettys are destroyed on the ground as they refuse to launch against the Allied TF creeping northward around Sakhalin. I'm a bit baffled why the 70 bettys I have gathered at 4 different airbases all refuse to launch. Could there be Allied CVs providing CAP over the convoy? Fighter cover is the only explanation I can think of ( since weather wasn't a factor over my bases or the TF and neither was bomber morale, experience or leadership) and fighter cover couldn't have been provided by Soviet fighters as they are too short-legged to cover the convoy in its present position. It is very, very strange.

An excellent result. I am going to let the Allies bring a little more force in and will then try to Shock Attack again with engineer regiments in order to reduce the fortifications further, get a 2:1 and begin routing a sizeable portion ( about 1/8th ) of the Allied defenders in India.

Jagdfluger is defending too far forward and falling for the temptation I have offered him, the chance to stop me on ground eminently favourable to the defence. Unfortunately the fact that this ground is very far forward means that if he doesn't hustle forward his LCUs will be in a position where they can be defeated piecemeal with devastating consequences.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

On 31st January the orders will go out to my forces in China to "cut and run". I will continue to hold 6 bastions, 3 in the very north-east of the country, Shanghai, Canton and Hankow. The 3 bastions in the north-east will be used to prevent the enemy breaking into Manchuria while the other 3 will be used to facilitate bomber training AND the attrition of Chinese resources and supplies. In addition this will allow me to free up a significant number of units to dissuade major Soviet attacks and for offensive use when the time comes.

Just a little test to see what is there. I expect to face about 1000 AV at Madoien ( where Jagdfluger has made his stand). Since they will have Level 9 forts AND be defending in wooded terrain AND are going to be fully prepped for Madoien I could see that AV being increased to 18,000 assuming 100% experience and leadership. While that won't be the case it is also definitely true that the enemy will be able to muster an adjusted AV significantly greater than the 2000 I can hope to muster via a Shock Attack.

So, Jagdfluger has created a position which will hold against any assault I can muster over the next month. The answer is, of course, to manoeuvre a bit but, unfortunately, the road net will not allow it. I do have a solution but it will have to wait for a week or so and it should prove an extremely cheap way to defeat over 3 divisions of defenders dug in in the most favourable terrain imaginable. My plan only requires one thing to go right for it to succeed, if it does I think it will be an extremely clean disembowelling stroke to the defence of the DEI. Either way it'll be an interesting, intricate and risky solution and so I'll enjoy trying it

Forgive the black box in the pic below. Sometimes when I'm switching programmes etc I think I run out of memory and cannonfire shows up in this manner.

And with the end of the first month's play against Jagdfluger I think it is time to revisit the Allied and Japanese situations. Firstly ships:

Japan, 89 ships lost.
3 CVLs - all lost when they ported in India and got slaughtered by a port attack.
1 CVE - lost in the same way. Fortunately I've managed to save most of the planes from these CVs.

2 CA,
2 CL,
2 AMCs ( Armed Merchant Cruisers)
1 CLAA,

7 DD,
1 DE,
2 APD,

15 AP,
41 AK,
1 AO,
4 TK,

2 SS,
2 AV,
2 MSW,
1 PT

Allied Losses: 411 ships.

10 BB ( 3 more severely damaged and ported in Bombay Harbour),
4 CA,
14 CL,
4 AMC,

42 DD,
25 AP,
120 AK,
5 AO,
23 TK,

40 SS,
4 AV,
6 AVD,
4 AS,
2 AR,
1 AGP,
1 AE,
15 MSW,
7 ML,
3 DMS,
7 DM,
46 PT,
3 SC,
12 PG,
12 PC.

And below is a production summary. Overall I have a surfeit of oil but am constrained in terms of the resources available. In a similar vein my shipyard production is only barely sufficient to meet demand. Airframe and engine production has been expanded massively with real bottlenecks beginning to develop in Ishikawajima production ( mostly due to the 50 G5Ns I am trying to build a month - they take 200 engines out of my production run leaving too few for my Bettys) and Mansyu production continuing to be given top priority. By the end of February I should be producing just over 480 Mansyus per month along with 120 Me-264 Angel airframes. That is going to allow me to begin conserving my Army and Navy bomber pilots to a far, far greater degree and will ease my current shortage of trained pilots for my fighter groups.

Overall though given that I have been facing the full might of every air force on the map, including the almost limitless pockets of the Soviet Air Force, I think my forces are doing pretty well with the conversion away from Nates being speeded by increased Oscar production

And now for the overall losses summary:

Well, strangely enough we just managed to hit 4000 Allied planes destroyed today. Obviously though Japanese losses have also been extremely heavy, particularly in terms of Operational and FlAK losses but that is only to be expected given that, at this time, Japanese forces are in precipitous advance and flying many missions over extremely long range. In addition I haven't managed to convert my force from an unarmoured air force to a fully-armoured one.

When the war starts only the Ki-51 Sonia is armoured. All of my other planes are unarmoured and suffer the consequences when facing enemy FlAK. With time, however, the Mike will become my primary interceptor ( armoured), while my land-based bomber squadrons all convert to Me-264 Angel ( all armoured - I anticipate conversion will be completed by about October of this year) and my Betty and Nell squadrons convert to the Marlina, which I expect to be absolutely lethal in the torpedo attack role. The Me-264 Behemoth with its guided missiles is going to be most useful for Port Attack missions.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/01/42

The HUGE news today is that it really looks like Jagdfluger is serious about invading the Home Islands. The ships which were in northern Soviet ports are now making their way south- I suspect the are heading towards Toyohara. Cool, that's well within airlift range from seveal bases plus I've had the 7th Infantry Division lurking around at sea ready to react to such an invasion. KB will also arrive from its lurking place on the 4th. I expect the initial landings will go well although I have a better than 50/50 chance of holding at the landing site whereupon all will depend upon how quickly and completely I slaughter the invasion fleets.

Either way this is going to be damned interesting.

He's closing the airbases from which I could base into Toyohara. This is sloppy, it telegraphs his move and is only useful if he has the force available to survive any concentration of forces I order in reaction to his upcoming invasion. At present he doesn't have the force to survive KB and so he shouldn't be telegraphing things like this.

When I'm weak I never hit a target hard before I attack it. Better to rely on deception and surprise than brute force when you don't have the greater brute force.

10 DDs and 8 transports begin landing the 2nd USMC and 161th US Army Regiment at Toyohaa. Unfortunately for the Allies this lies within the Northern Zone and thus those troops are suffering something like 5 times the normal disablements on landing. The landing at Toyohara is going to be a disaster since combined with these excessive losses I have 1 Brigade due to arrive tomorrow ( I have abandoned the base north of Toyohara in order to hold onto Toyohara since Toyohara has a Level 3 port and a more developed airfield and will allow me to both bring in troops more quickly and establish aerial supremacy more quickly... with those two conditions met I can take back the northern base at my leisure.) and am flying in elements of 3 more Brigades by airbridge. With the arrival of the 7th Division on the 10th and the arrival of an additional 900 AV over the next 3 weeks the Allied account should be settled fairly quickly.

And lastly the situation near Toyohara. I still think it was suicidal to send his shipping on this mission since, without the ability to resupply at will, his ground forces are doomed. Obviously he is just hoping to divert me from other operations - and will almost certainly use this period of time to bring significant reinforcements into Hawaii/invade Hilo under cover of his CV force. Well once this little sideshow is taken care of I'll be covering Pearl with a whole gaggle of Zeroes and Nells.

I have also managed to base 70 or so Jeans in Hokkaido. They are from my training cadre and have experience of between 20 to 40 so they are unlikely to achieve much in the torpedo attack role. As such I'm just sending them in at maximum altitude as level bombers. I have found torpedo bombers to achieve excellent results in such a role at little cost. It will also form a great final training routine for them.

Also note that Shikuka is ungarrisoned. I fully expect the enemy to land at Shikuka and take it tomorrow but it only has Level 1 airfields and ports and thus it will take some time to unload and build up... time I won't give it. Already my Me-264s are basing at Tokyo in order to commence a strategic bombing campaign bolstered by Mikes and Rufes operating out of Toyohara.

He cant be prepped for that landing very well either so that will make the landing losses even worse ! I have to agree with your assesment that he's doomed here and thats a lot of useful allied troops, esp the AA units that are valuable (in stock at least) not to mention the marines who will take forever to rebuild (if he has subs capable of evaccing that is) heavy ASW presence might make some of those units permanently dead for little risk imo.

By day's end 6 of the Allied ships in this area had sunk. Since I estimate that there are at least 50 enemy ship in the are these are hardly instantly devastating losses but, over time, they will add up. I need to sink them more quickly but my BBs are still in the process of meeting up with their destroyer escort and I don't want to send them in to that maelstrom of BBs, CAs and enemy DDs without some sort of escort. My basic hope is that if my BBs can destroy or damage the enemy BBs and CAs and some DDs then my bombers will get much clearer shots at the enemy transports - plus I'm going to need to close Shikula airfield once it is taken. I can expect Jagdfluger to pack it with as many fighters as he can manage - if he can find 300 then he will place 300 on it... and by our house rules that's entirely fair - and I think a good bombardment TF may be my only chance of closing it rapidly.

What will my losses amount to? Well I will lose the 3 DDs I am sending in with the BBs and will probably lose at least one of the BBs with the other two being yard birds for many, many months. Still, if it gives my bombers clear shots at the enemy fleet it will be well worth it.

Ok now THIS was unexpected. I just lost 57 Nates - and more importantly their pilots. My units there had well over 300 AV so I was very surprised to see the adjusted AV was only 36. Well, cue a massive scramble to send 1500 AV up there to retake Kalgan. The one nice thing is that knowing Jagdfluger's habits by now I should be able to hit his bombers when they fly in to take advantage of Kalgan's airfield.

He may have the advantage with all my rebasings being telegraphed to him before his order phase but I still have inspired guesswork to fall back on ;). Let's hope it is enough.

Wow, paratroopers. I had expected him to land amphibiously. I certainly hadn't expected paratroops. Obviously Jagdfluger was saving them up for surprise use in the invasion of Korea/Manchuria but has felt the need to commit them to salvage his Toyohara venture.

Hmpf! Intresting. Are you sure that you can repulse Jagdfluger? He seems very experiened opponent and IF he goes for Home Islands I doubt he is not fully prepared for this? ...Banzai indeed!

Aztez,

Well, to be honest, I don't care. If he beats me then that's brilliant since I'll have found someone who will really challenge me and the first thing I'll do is ask for a rematch. I don't play to win, I play to be challenged AND to try to put risky, skillful ops into action against excellent players so if I don't repulse him then that'll be fine too. I THINK I can repulse him as I have quite a large force available but if I'm wrong I'm wrong and I'll be happy to find an opponent who challenges me this much.

And in another picture recapping events of the day...

Some of the slower elements of KB manage to run into a fleeing Soviet tanker convoy. Results, predictable

NO-ONE in the Japanese pilot training programme disbelieves in Darwin. When you are ordered to fly over and attack enemy battleships and transports in only your 2nd week of pilot training you get a firm grasp of Darwinian Selection in an evidence-based manner

I salute that sentiment ! , already planing a rematch and swopping sides with Joe myself

Yup its the right attitude !!!!

Some of cannot leave our quasi historical baggage at home and play the game with that attitude (me for one)

I am following this with great interest

Jad is probably cursing me at present given his strategy for some of the things I did to defend ;)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/04/42

Well things are really building up. What looked like 30 ships at one stage is now looking more like 40 to 50 and that number may even increase more. I'm running into massive numbers of tankers and oilers which he obviously used to refuel his ships before their final dash in. What an imaginative operation, I'm impressed.

Well, if he wants to hit worthless transports on the ground then he is welome to them. I have about 350 of these obsolete transports available to me so their loss isn't significant. I think he'd have done better hitting a base from which I was launching strikes but hey let's let him make mistakes. When you are at war with pretty much the entire world and they've just invaded your backyard you shouldn't quibble when your opponent messes up . He doesn't do too much wrong after all.

A significant portion of the bombers sortied against Toyohara turned back in the face of my Mikes. My Mike losses have been infinitesimally small, I think he is just completely avoiding places where he knows them to be - this would make sense and be in keeping with my sense of their abilities.

This looks like another sacrificial TF. Why do I say this? Simple, it comprises more than one ship - enough to be noticed - but nothing very important AND it has raced out from where the US fleet is to lie just offshore of the Soviet Union in close proximity to my Betty bases. It has succeeded in its mission.

The Me-264s did a real number on the intercepting fighters . 8 out of 13 were damaged when trying to intercept the Me-264s. Obviously though this is much more a sign of the Soviet pilots' lack of experience than any invulnerability of the Me-264 as US Navy

In two days I've flown in 157 AV from 3 separate Brigades. I think it is safe to say that Toyohara is now extremely secure. The fight is going to be over what happens to Shikuka.

I have identified 22 transports and 20 surface combat vessels guarding Shikuka. In addition I have identified at least 10 DDs, 2 BBs and a CA among these warships so there can be no doubt but that this represents a very significant portion of the American surface fleet.

What have I got arrayed against it?

Well, tomorrow, 56 Bettys and Nells escorted by 16 Zeroes will sortie from Kiamusze, 60 Bettys and Nells escorted by 47 Zeroes will sortie from Mutankiang, 57 Jeans, 4 Kates and 7 Vals escorted by 28 Zeroes and a smaller number of Mikes and Rufes will sortie from Toyohara ( I have 30 Mikes and 24 Rufes at Toyohara but they are dedicated to providing CAP over the base so won't do much of the escort work) while 41 Me-264s will sortie from Tokyo to bomb the field at Shikula.

In addition 98 Zeroes ( 60% CAP ), 98 Kates and 55 Vals will sortie from KB while another 47 Kates and Vals and 18 Zeroes stand ready to sortie from Kaga ( which has fallen a little behind in the race to intercede).

These forces will strike the enemy for two days after which a surface combat TF under the command of Yano, H. comprising Kirishima, Nagato, Mutsu and two DDs will move to Shikuka under the cover of darkness and engage the enemy survivors in a night action. I could send them in tonight and kill more of the enemy troops before they unload but I am mindful of the two enemy BBs and would like to soften them up a little more before engaging with my vastly overwhelmed but qualitatively superior battleline.

I am not even all that anxious to risk losses to "sink everything immediately" as many benefits will accrue to my forces from damaging enemy ships, namely;
1. Every enemy ship damaged will create one more straggler which will stray from the main fleet providing plenty of opportunity for my Bettys and Nells to engage single ship TFs without fear of their LRCAP.

2. Every damaged enemy ship which makes port will be one more ship Jagdfluger has to defend against attack. As such it will provide me with an excellent opportunity to remove experienced Soviet fighter pilots from their squadrons.

3. As my bases in the Northern Area of Operations continue to develop and I can cover the sea with some squadrons on naval search I will be able to

CVL Shoho is patrolling the waters between Petropavlovsk and Midway to catch escapers and I will be joined by CVL Mizuho in two days time which can be alloted as required by the outcome of the next two day's activities. Mostly though I envision most of KB striking at the enemy around Shikula while Kaga backstops them about 360 miles eastward and Shoho backstops me about 1200 miles east and Mizuho races to interdict routes of retreat toward Midway.

In addition the ASW war continues apace with the US sub Grayback and a Soviet sub both being hit by my ASW aircraft.
