A costly but necessary air raid on Amchitka. Kaga is going to limp past Amchitka on its own out offuel in 3 days time and I want this airfield completely closed for business by that time such that Kaga is safe. Once that's done Kaga will finally rejoin KB and the 5 members of KB will hunt down what's left at Petropavlovsk.

5 members of KB? What happened to the 6th? Well, Soryu is running an ultra-secret mission to deliver Mikes to Hilo. Once that's done I'll really be able to close Pearl Harbour no matter what fighter defence they put up.

Andy,

Re: India: No, that is exactly what Jagdfluger was aiming for so it is the one thing I wasn't going to do. My warplan was always to grab Lunga, PM and Hilo quickly but then to take the rest of the Pacific only very slowly as I WANT the Allies to forward deploy and fight me as I approach their Pacific holdings - since once they stand and fight I can more easily kill them. What he has achieved by this is the following:

1. Delayed my South Pacific movement by 1 month.
2. Really made me be ruthless about how much of China I was going to give up. My initial warplan was togive up about 50% of my China holdings, that has now gone up to over 70%. The 2000 AV freed up by this are going to India as I want to make really, really sure of this theatre.

Overall I think that is has hurt him immensely ) 2 BBs, 1 CL, 3 or 4 DMS, about 8 or 9 DDs and roughly 50 or so transports ) and has cost me the Mutsu... I was actually surprised at that but that's all it has cost me apart from 4 transports sunk by submarine on the way to or from Toyohara. By month's end I'd be pretty surprised if the Allies hadn't lost upwards of 525 ships which really is a horrific toll, especially when you bear in mind that my premier shipkillers aren't entering production for another 4 months.

It might seem I'm being a bit glib and, obviously, he has hurt me, costing me a lot of pilots in the initial desperate attacks on his landing forces BUT Shikula really does seem to me to have been a major failure... I asked Jagdfluger if he was interested in AARing but he is too busy... Perhaps if there is interest he could maybe just discuss some of his thoughts and sketch his plans though.

Zero pool: Zero  I am running most of my carriers with borrowed squadrons, don't remember when I last upgraded a Claude unit to Zeroes - but it was probably around the turn of the year - and most of my land-based Zero squadrons are at 75% or so. Things will improve as I get more Mikes online and can replace my defending Zeroes with Mikes, allowing me to save my Zeroes and upgrade my Claudes.

AAA on Yamato:  Honestly I don't know. I reprovisioned it before sending it up to its current blocking role and it has only had to fend off a small number of bombers so I have the impression that its ammo is holding up just fine. I'll check though. Can it be swamped? Absolutely. It cost him about 15 Vildebeest but he sent in something like 50 or 60 torpedo bombers one day and swamped my "Designer Class CAAA"off Celon. If he did the same to Yamato then she would sink too. The thing is that I've been pretty careful with her and only offered her as a target when I was pretty sure none or few of his escorts would have the range to protect the bombers he sent out. It has worked well so far with the Yamata CVA TF downing over 80 bombers in the last two weeks with only two of them actually getting through to launch torpedoes at my CVA TF.

of course it only has to go wrong once ;)

I'm glad to see you here and enjoying the game. I understand that it mightn't be the sort of play you might, personally, enjoy but I think the rough and tumble of it is interesting enough... I am certainly finding it exciting to play.

Below you can see the current situation in India. 7 Allied combat units are holding my forces at a river line west of Vizagatapem, 8 are holding me south-east of Nagpur and fully 30 units are embroiled in my diversion at Bombay and Poona.

My own forces are divided as follows, 800 AV facing the Allied troops at Vizagatapam, 2000 AV conducting the diversion at Bombay and Poona and roughly 2,400 AV preparing to conduct a combat crossing of the river south-east of Nagpur. My concept of operations is that once I break through at Nagpur * fingers crossed * that I will be able to exploit deeply towards both Bhopal and Raipur. This will force the enemy at Vizagatapam to begin pulling back or risk being pocketed and will force much the same choice on the enemy at Poona and Bombay. I want to try to take southern India quickly enough now as it is obvious that Jagdfluger is just bringing Chinese divisions in over the trails and by air and the quicker I can close those routes the better. The other big piece of news is that Pangim is almost a Level 4 airfield which is going to really complicate Jagdfluger's bringing in of supplies so long as he can't close it with his BB runs. Obviously though he is aware of that so he's going to keep those up whenever he has something major coming in. Another appears to be on the way as we speak

Looks like coming in at 3,000 feet is a bit too low . Well, live and learn. Amazingly only 2 of the damaged bombers fail to make it home. If these had been Lillys and Sallys I'd have lost at least double or triple this number. Looks like the Me-264 really IS the answer to a significant part of my pilot shortage question... albeit an expensive answer.

My bomber production has taken a major hit since Jagdfluger sucker-punched me by knocking out over 120 aircraft factories ( approximately 60 Mikes and 60 Me 264s) and about 240 engine factories but a crash production programme is increasing my production again. I am already back up to 80 Me 264s and over 100 Mikes per month and will be back to 120 Me 264s and 150 Mikes by month's end.

These friendly losses look quite bad BUT you have to bear in mind that those 4 B-17s represents a week's allotment of B-17s. The Oscars will be replaced within 2 days as will the other planes. So, while I amn't stopping the raids it is entirely in my interest that they continue. Unfortunately I don't, quite, have the 20,000 tons of supplies at an of my forward bases to allow my Nate squadron to upgrade to Mikes. Once that happens these raids will stop.

This is silly, he should really be using these B26s etc in India to kill my BBs and CVA. Using them here is a major diversion of scarce resources. Ah well, it suits me fine to lose a half-dozen merchants if that's the cost of keeping them here.

We pass the magic 500 mark today. 502 Allied ships of all types have been sunk in return for 102 Japanese ships. Since the beginning of the month the Allies have lost 91 ships while Japan has lost about 16. The vast majority of Japanese ships lost have been AKs used in the assault transport role near Toyohara and in the DEI as Andy has shipped a lot of torpedo bombers in to try to destroy these ships.

Tomorrow I take a huge risk and send my BBs into Karachi with my carriers standing 60 miles offshore to provide CAP. I am going to be in range of every fighter and bomber in Karachi and losses are, sadly, inevitable. Hopefully it won't be too bad though and if I can kill most of these merchants it should be worth it.

Ok, its time for a straw poll. I have 600 AV worth of troops in Japan and I want to cause some havoc with them. Here are my options:

1. Add these troops to Toyohara... I don't really think this is necessary as I already have 1100 AV there and I don't think the Allies landed more than 3 divisions at Shikula - at least 50% of which are very badly beaten up. Given that I have a defensive bonus of x 3 due to woods I think Toyohara is completely safe. Landing the 600 AV would only be useful if I was going on the offensive and I think that so long as I just bomb Shikula into oblivion and use up all the supplies there I can afford to let the US troops wither on the vine... plus it might cause the US to run a "rescue mission" which would give me some excellent opportunities to wreak havoc.

2. Land the 600 AV at Petropavlovsk and then, later, at Amchitka. The idea would be to remove the "stepping stones" running from Alaska to Shikula. The problem is that I am afraid the "poor weather" rule for landings above a certain latitude in winter will absolutely wreck those troops. I have them combat loaded but I think that the bad weather disadvantage will wreak havoc no matter how well-loaded they are. Does anyone know when the bad weather modifier stops? Is it 1st March, 1st April ???

3. Land them on Midway. I should be able to add an Engineer Regiment from China to these troops in a couple of weeks which should allow me to take fortification levels down. I am assuming that I am going to face at 2 Regiments behind Level 4 or 5 fortifications - thus having an adjusted AV of probably 600. So my 600 probably isn't enough. How much should I bring? Would 2,000 do and how much can my APs unload in a single full day?

If I were to go for Midway I would probably just try to drop 2,000 AV on it by late March with a view to unloading all of my AV in a single day. I have the shipping to do this but need advice on just how heavily loaded my ships can be and still unload in a single day.

4. Forget about Midway entirely and wait for the bad weather modifier to no longer apply before invading Petropavlovsk and just ship the 3,000+ AV to India to speed things up there. Jagdfluger is going to be trying to bring reinforcements in ASAP and so I need to hustle.

Bad weather iirc stops at 1st March ( although i could be wrong) in the North, do NOT ever land in winter as you saw what happened to the allied landings , im sure its somewhere in the manual, just not sure where . Petropavlovsk is imo the best target nice AF already built too as a bonus. (4) isnt it ?

Midway is an isolated base you can take anytime you like considering you hold hilo and PH to ransom anyway. I seriously doubt allies are even thinking about Midway for several months.

good luck in india too as it appears that your opponent can form up a semi decent ground defence although i agree he's wasting valuable allied a/c over sakalin , esp the spits ( how on earth he got them there is a mystery ) have thier range increased over stock as in nikmod ?

China could be a worry for you .. while clobbering the resources (good move ) he's free to set up a
great defensive barrier unless he's greedy then you can surround and conquorer in deatil , BUT he'll
get the units back in 3 months and have time to re build them so beware some extra-ordinary chinese attack and advances ( he can afford losses).

good luck

You should not try to destroy CHinese forces, IMO.

Isolate them and let them rot, out of supply, otherwise they return to Chungking, rebuild and return to haunt you.

Rob,

I'm not too worried about China for a couple of reasons:

1. I have over 9,000 AV there. (1,000 for each of my main bases, 2,000 for a force to protect my northern flank and 2,000 in reserve - which I could send to India if required. Risky but possible.)

2. I am defending 5 significant bases - Canton, Shanghai, Hankow, Peking and Tsientin with garrisons of 1,000 each. Each of those bases is an urban hex ( x 4 multiplier ) and has been building fort levels frantically for the past month. Many only have Level 3 or 4 forts but several have Level 7 or 8 forts. So, this means that 1,000 AV of defenders will be adjusted to a defensive AV of between 6,000 and 9,000 depending on the die rolls. Even when attacking with maximum effect I haven't seen the Chinese get close to these levels and, if the do, I will be able to transport in my mobile reserve by air and ship to any of the above bases ( Hankow is reachable by river... Hell, just today I evacuated two divisions of troops, which the Chinese had managed to encircle, in a single day from the rivers 180 miles south-east of Hankow from right under their noses ;). ) where even 100 AV will be adjusted upward by a factor of between 4 and 12.

3. Each of the bases also has a significant airfield ( between Level 4 and Level 6) and with another month's concentrated resource bombing I feel confident that the Allies will be in quite a pickle, especially, as my Me-264s join the fray. *note to self - Do a survey of just what is and isn't damaged yet in China.

India:
Yes, he has shown a great deal of skill in realising when his defensive lines are in trouble and pulling back before I can force a retreat ( with the attendant loss of 20% of the troops from that unit). However, my basic plan of using 1/3rd of my force to divert him around Bombay and the remaining 2/3rds to push through elsewhere is working out well. I NEED a breakthrough in the centre but once I get that and force 1 retreat I have enough armoured units available to force auto-retreat after auto-retreat and should remove 800 AV from his OOB - a loss he will be unable to rapidly make good.

Spits: They transferred over there in stages. He just flew them from India to Burma and from there through China and into the Soviet Union. It took him a while but he could recognise just how quickly the Soviet Union's air force was getting written down over Shikula. Unfortunately for him by the time they arrived the Soviets were pretty much neutralised.

bbbf,
Correct. Admittedly they only come back at 33% strength but even that doesn't work for me. My plan with China has always been to starve them of supply. A unit at full strength but out of supply fights at 25% ( less than a destroyed and re-constituted unit) BUT - and this is crucial - draws TRIPLE the supply of that re-constituted unit. So, so long as the reconstituted unit has replacements off they actually fight roughly 33% BETTER than a full strength unit with no supply AND use only 1/3rd of the supplies to do that.

In effect if you want the Chinese to run out supplies the very last thing you want to do is destroy their units as that cuts their supply requirement by 2/3rds and greatly eases the Chinese supply situation.

Thanks for the input guys. I am still undecided. A lot will depend on how India looks like unfolding over the next few days. I have roughly 3,000 AV to spare at the moment if I strip China, the DEI and Tokyo and 1,000 AV if I leave a large reserve in China/Manchukuo. 1,000 would help in India while 3,000 would make sure of it but sending 3,000 would also mean my defences in Korea etc would be left bare.

What about the Soviets? If Jagdfluger manages to open a supply line between China and Russia, he should receive enough supplies for the Chinese. The Red Army seems to be quite passive currently. IMHO this is not a good sign for you. I would expect some major action from the Soviets anytime soon. If Jagdfluger somehow manages to move a command HQ to Mongolia (where is Mao with the Red Chinese HQ currently? Or did the mod even add the Soviet Transbaikal HQ?), he'll be able to draw lots of supplies from Krasnoyarsk to feed a major offensive in Mongolia/Northern China/Northern Manchuria.

Damn, all of the other enemy ships have docked and I only had this TF on surface combat, not bombardment. ARGH!!! . Still, I caught another ship and managed to drown a few hundred more Allied troops, including a suspiciously large number of vehicles... I am guessing that this is the UK Armoured Brigade which may have arrived in Aden recently ( we are playing with +/- 60 day reinforcements so all of this is a bit up in the air.

The ruthless exploitation of the fact that the Allies get an advantage with the air balance numbers goes on. Matrix REALLY should do something to stop this number being displayed. It is a completely inconsistent breach of the game's internal logic and FOW. I lost a half-month's production of Vals but, apart from that, the strike was pretty meaningless as I have more than enough other obsolescent transports and very few pilots were killed or wounded.

The difference between the Mikes' performance in this mission and that of my tired Zero groups is amazing. It is also noticeable that without the constant drain of 4 to 8 IJN pilots lost per day my Zero pools are beginning to increase and all of my depleted airgroups are beginning to fill out again. Soon I should be able to convert my first new Zero group of the year. That underlines just how horrific losses have been. The Allies have now lost over 1500 more planes than they had on-map when the game began and Japanese losses are closing in on the number of planes they had on-map at the game's beginning.

CV Yamato, Torpedo hits 2, on fire

Well, well, well. 41 of the 42 Buffaloes are downed by my CAP as are 5 of the Shturmoviks. The other 4 Shturmoviks turn back but the 3 Albacores are ignored by my CAP and bore into the Yamato. Despite everything the ship's crew can do all 3 launch at absolutely point-blank range. They are determined not to let the sacrifice of their comrades be in vain. 2 torpedoes strike the Yamato's side, one of them causing critical damage deep in the bowels of the ship. By the afternoon the ship is no longer capable of flight operations and is heavily damaged with massive fires and flooding wracking its engine spaces. System damage is 49, fire damage is 27 and flooding damage is 16. This is absolutely devastating and with poor Japanese damage control Yamato is in deep trouble. Still, you take your chances and, if it doesn't work out, you pay the price. That's war and there's no point bitching about it. Yamato will live or die as fate and my ability to dodge the many subs hunting her dictate.

A very quiet day by our standards. The main news is that the Allies haven't abandoned Poona or Bombay yet. This is good as every day they wait there is one day I get ahead in the race to Bhopal - which will cut off the 1200 AV of troops from Poona.

Rob, Vetamur,
Aye, Yamatos had a bad day today. They are making for Sri Lanka but, to be honest, I expect Bombay to be abandoned any day now as my thrust towards Nagur continues. Remember that I'm a manoeuvrist and like to dislocate the enemy's defensive positions as a means of getting a cheap victory. With Nagpur threatened Bombay is untenable.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21/42

Today's another quiet day. The main news is that while the Yamato's system damage has climbed to 58 its flooding damage has stabilised at 34 so it should make it to port. In other news my preparation of the Soviet east coast begins to gather pace with several sweeps going in preparatory to forthcoming port attacks. I have also taken stock of the advice given and after reading the weather section of the manual again I found it confirmed that the bad weather effect STOPS in northern climes at the end of February. So, I will land at Petropavlovsk on 1st March 1942 .

So, I can muster roughly 60 torpedo-bombers for my torpedo strikes on any enemy fleet which makes for Shikula. That should be enough to cause sufficient attrition. What this figure hides is the fact that most of my Betty and Nell groups are at between 33 and 50% strength and I've even been forced to disband 3 groups which had less than 4 planes each - instead of the 27 they should normally muster.

If I disband a group which arrived with only 1 or 2 planes ( because I didn't have enough planes in the pool to outfit it fully ) and then ensure I have enough planes to outfit it properly in 90 days time when it re-appears will it re-appear with 27 pilots of the right experience? The answer to this question will have important ramifications for my pilot training programmes.

How goes the shock pursuit in the centre ? It appears to be a horse race to Bhopal now but I doubt he will stand there as its to easly flanked at Ahmabad

I love how aggressive Jagd is being China appears to be going down in smoke will you be able to hang on at Shanghai ?

What kind of forces are you marshalling for your Russian landing I notice Jagd is being quite quiet with the Russian Hordes....ominously quiet ?

We won't be seeing this raid repeated often. While my losses of Vals were exceedingly heavy it is also true that the loss of 8 B17s, representing a fortnight's delivery to the theatre, cannot be borne for long. Again we see the massive difference in performance between the Mike and unarmoured Rufes and Zeroes. The Mike is only damaged by fire which downs Zeroes and Rufes and thus saves many of my pilots' lives.

Not a good day to be an Allied bomber pilot. 64 sortie, 10 are downed short of the ships and those which do not turn back make their bomb runs with more attention to survival than accuracy. My air force would never graduate such pilots. Bomber pilots' only worth is in delivering bombs to targets. Their survival is only important insofar as the longer they live the more experienced they are and the more likely they are to hit.

Andy,

Oh there's a HUGE difference between fighting and taking something the enemy tries to hold and taking something the enemy abandons . I want to draw the enemy East as much as possible. Once India falls I will collect on this plan, which I've had even while we were playing. It may not work but that's why we play after all. Shanghai is ueber-safe . I have about 1200 AV at every urban base in China x 4 ( urban defence modifier) x 2-3 ( forts) = 9,000 to 12,000 AV.

The Chinese have had trouble mustering even 2,000 AV nevermind 9,000. Even throughout my retreat I had formed reserves of over 3,000 AV which I could have used but that wouldn't have conformed to the plan of drawing him east.

As to India. No, he will hold at Bhopal. He will retreat in the south but he will hold at Bhopal and at Ahmadabad. Others would do differently but this is the way Jagdfluger will do it.

These planes are flying from Nikolaevska na Amur. Time to remove it from the correlation of forces. I've timed it well enough that everything should arrive at Petropavlovsk and begin unloading on 1st March 1942.

I just do NOT understand why Jagdfluger is accepting such continual, unfavourable attrition! When he gets kills they are almost always due to his FlAK. His fighters are scoring at best 1 kill for every 5 they lose since the introduction of the Mikes. I know attrition is felt to be the Americans' friend but at a 5:1 ratio it really is not at all favourable.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21/42

If I disband a group which arrived with only 1 or 2 planes ( because I didn't have enough planes in the pool to outfit it fully ) and then ensure I have enough planes to outfit it properly in 90 days time when it re-appears will it re-appear with 27 pilots of the right experience? The answer to this question will have important ramifications for my pilot training programmes.

I have a bad feeling that this change in the last patch is crucifying me as Japan in another game. I think those pilots are gone forever. You can't tell, but pools don't go up, and pilots you draw into these sub-strength units are at whatever level you have from the pools.

If you disband, I am sure that the squadron comes back as a reformed squadron, i.e at pool experience.

I would have thought that the squadron should arrive with it's full strength of pilots sans aircraft. Thus you get experienced pilots to disband into other squadrons or wait to rebuild the one they are in.

The only way around it is to ensure that the pools of aircraft are always sufficient to allow full replacement squadron drawdowns.

Bloody hard to do!

Monter,
Well, when put up against top-line enemy fighters they are pretty useless. Don't forget that their kills on the 23rd were pretty much all of enemy transports and patrol types... which aren't particularly known for being difficult to shoot down.

bbbf,
Amen to that.

My understanding is that if you Withdraw the sqn the pilots stay with the sqn so a sqn with 25 x 80xp pilots if withdrawn will re appear with 25 x 80xp pilots.

If the same sqn is disbanded then the 25 x 80xp pilots go to the sqn you disband it into and when the original sqn is reformed it appears with NO pilots and you need to fill it up from your pool.

Only designated reinforcement sqns appear with pilots based on the pool xp

i.e. a new sqn with no special designated xp levle will appear with 45xp pilots in 44 a formerly disbanded sqn does not get these free pilots

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/26/42

I should point out, at this stage, that Jagdfluger and I have been having a lot of discussions about the Shock Attack + Pursue model. I get the feeling that he is pretty shocked by his force losses following forced retreats but, hey, this is a no-holds barred game. Another interesting bit of information is that it looks like Andy used PP to transfer two West Coast divisions to Aden as we initially thought there was a bug whereby two US divisions had shown up in Aden instead of the US.

As compensation for having to get info on that topic (in order to outrule it being a bug) I answered Jagdfluger's question about my tank forces... I told him that I did have four extempore tank divisions through the combination of Tank brigades and tank regiments into ad hoc tank divisions and that two of those divisions were operating in India. What I didn't tell him is that instead of each division being 200 AV each division is 400 to 450 AV so he now thinks that the two ad hoc divisions are heading for Bhopal with two more being in Korea/China when, in fact, one division is making the drive to Bhopal while the other, along with several infantry divisions, is making for Ahmadabad.

Those of you familiar with Operation Bagration will notice that I am a big fan of it and am very much following what the Soviets did by varying the direction and weight of my thrusts such that the enemy reserves continuously end up in less then essential sectors and fall foul of Clausewitz's saying, "Order, counter-order, disorder".

Costly but necessary. I've decide to put the Ki-51 back into production as I really need a cheap dive-bomber which I can produce in quantity once I stop Oscar I production ( thus using up the Nakajima engines I would otherwise hve no use for) and which will help keep my trainee dive-bomber pilots alive during training.

The enemy merchants at Nikolaevsk na Amur get pounded yet again. They are cheap and easy targets ( and the AS is actually important) so I might as well try to sink them before they can run any supplies to Shikula.

Another forced retreat and another 20% loss of AV . For some weird reason though the Allies managed to get a unit in around BEHIND the ad hoc tank division. Still, I can make this work for me by rivetting his attention at Bhopal while I push on Ahmadabad and dislocate his new line of defence.
