Aye but what has allowed to Shock Attack + Pursue isn't the armour, it is the fact that I'm doing it on a railway line. Even infantry moves 90 miles on a railway line per day and so can Shock Attack + Pursue. So, this isn't something to do with armour although I have allowed my armour to advance ahead of my infantry ( by halting my infantry for a day) since it served my purposes to force Jagdfluger to concentrate on the obvious thread to Bhopal as a means of distracting him from Ahmadabad.

In any case your points about armour were about later in 1942 and 43. At this stage of the game the Japanese have NO additional armour and what has been achieved has been achieved by the application of 2000+ infantry AV and 400 AV of armour along one axis. Even along the Nagpur/Bhopal axis the armour accounted for less than 20% of the force. Sorry but I think your assessment is flawed Andy. The real flaw isn't the Japanese having too much armour ( since they have no additional armour and I'm only using a portion of what they have along this axis) the flaw is, IMO, the entire Shock Attack+ Pursue model which makes ground attacks too "all or nothing".

Ha, I wish. Nah, with P51s appearing in September 42 and carrier-borne Corsairs from January 1943 my ability to launch any major attacks with those tank divisions in 43/44 will be minimal. OTOH a tank division on an atoll should be pretty frightening and there are lots of places I can go that Allied carriers can't touch ;) if India goes well... Burma, China, Soviet Union, Australia etc.

Very interesting. Not only are there US troops at Shikula but also large portions of several Soviet divisions. Weird. I wonder what the plan was here?

My understanding is that if you Withdraw the sqn the pilots stay with the sqn so a sqn with 25 x 80xp pilots if withdrawn will re appear with 25 x 80xp pilots.

If the same sqn is disbanded then the 25 x 80xp pilots go to the sqn you disband it into and when the original sqn is reformed it appears with NO pilots and you need to fill it up from your pool.

Only designated reinforcement sqns appear with pilots based on the pool xp

i.e. a new sqn with no special designated xp levle will appear with 45xp pilots in 44 a formerly disbanded sqn does not get these free pilots

Yep, which means that these squadrons we get, with less than full TOE but with trained pilots to match the airframes are costing Japan critical trained pilots (and the US, though it hurts them less over time).

I will have to have a go at seeing what happens to confirm, but if what I think is going on is right, they should change it.

bbbf,

Allied reinforcement squadrons do NOT draw down from the Allied pilot or airframe pool. So if the Allies don't have enough airframes they still get the full-strength squadron. So, this only hurts Japan.

Unfortunately I managed to write over the turn of 28th February so what I will do is just give a summary of the current status of the war relative to the situation at the end of January. It makes, IMO, interesting reading.

Status Report, 28th February 1942.

Overall the critical situation on the northern flank has been stabilised with sufficient forces at Toyohara to hold against any likely Allied attack and sufficient forces ( over 600 AV ) freed from the front to enable a quick riposte against the other Soviet and Allied bases in the Aleutians and coastal Soviet Union.

The defences in Hawaii and surrounding bases are being slowly but surely built up and, if necessary, KB can sprint down to stabilise any situation there while a, hopefully, enticing trap has been prepared for the Allies in the South Pacific.

In India the Allied front has been breached precisely as planned and with a new OMG driving in the north with a view to dislocating the enemy's entire defensive line a precipitous retreat is almost guaranteed. My next major thrust will occur in the south and, to that aim, I am planning to land 1 division and 3 Brigades at Vizangapatam the day after I capture it. to double the strength of the southern thrust and enable it to quickly over-run the defences around Calcutta and Asansol.

So, all in all, it is going well although, losses have, as always, been heavy. My hope is that with events in India settled I will quickly be able to settle affairs in Burma and can then turn my attention towards China, the Soviet Union and building up my defences on the Pacific.

So, let's look at how things have changed in the past month.

Firstly the score has remained relatively constant. While the Allies have gained 2,500 points Japanese forces have gained 7,800 points. Obviously this game isn't being decided on points but it is still a valid point of comparison to give a rough idea how things are going.

In the air the Allies have lost an additional 1,637 planes while Japan has lost 1,329. What these bald figures, which seem highly favourable to the Allies, fail to reveal is that with almost 500 of the Japanese losses occuring on the ground and a large amount of the rest occurring due to either ops losses or defensive A2A combat over my own airfields my own pilot losses have actually been quite light. There is a squeeze on my bomber production at the moment as I am waiting for sufficient Me-264s to re-equip my premier bomber units but I expect to be able to produce 120 Me 264s a month whilst only requiring 30 or so to replace losses thus allowing the conversion of 3 Sentai per month which will ease the strain on my Ki-32s, Lillys and Sallys.

On the shipping front 116 Allied ships and 28 Japanese ships have been sunk. The majority of Japanese ships were sunk by Soviet submarines which have proven surprisingly effective in the post month, one reason I was so eager to destroy the AS docked at a Soviet port, while most of the Allies ships were destroyed by KB and my land-based Jeans and Kates. The most significant losses this month were of two American BBs and the Mutsu in the waters off Shikula. Apart from these BBs and a few Americans DMS and DD almost all of the losses were of garden variety APs, AKs and TKs. Obviously the Americans have a huge reserve of these ship types but even with their deep pockets this rate of loss is not sustainable and will limit the strength and/or rate of their advances in 1944 and 1945.

In terms of production Japan has lost almost 2,000 resources in the past month and a little HI due to the surrendering of most of China without a fight. That's OK though as the capture of India and the re-stabilisation of the situation in China will soon set things right + the Soviet Union is a huge source of resources and HI if they can be taken relatively intact.

Damn, painful shipping losses here. Fortunately most of the bomb hits were only 100 Kg bombs but, even still, at least a score of transports are out of action for a few months or sunk.

It really is a new experience to be able to call on long-range four-engined bombers as a Japanese player. It allows you to really react in all directions from a central position and really cuts down on ops losses and fatigue from continual rebasing. In other news I have just converted my 2nd sentai of bombers to Me 264s.

Madoien is proving a tough nut. I had really expected the Allies to run out of supplies extremely quickly in this pocket but they seem to have supplies to burn... and a lot of AAA. I will be able to solve this problem quickly by bringing Me-264s to bear but, for right now, they are just too limited a resource and more useful in keeping Shikula beaten down. On a sidenote I can already see the effect of the increased durability and armour of the Me-264s reflected in my pilot experience. All of the previously converted Me 264 units have experience of over 80 even with the addition of 60 Exp pilots to replace their losses.

This looks good for the Allies but, in reality, it is just a case of Jagdfluger delaying at Bhopal while I work around the northern and southern flanks. He'll be abandoning Bhopal in the next couple of days unless I'm very mistaken. It also looks like he has abandoned Karachi as my recon missions show only a single unit at Karachi. Now is the moment that I will begin to dilute my forces and spread them out in order to either force the defence to also spread out ( unlikely) or to just hunker down in a single base and try to ride out a siege after their ability to run to the Burmese border has been removed.

If I were in Jagdfluger's position right now I would be running for the Burmese border at full speed and desperately trying to link my Soviet and Chinese forces so that the Chinese could draw down on Soviet supplies whilst the British Indian Army tried to make it through Burma and down into China/Malaysia. It is unlikely to work if enacted at the moment but, if put into motion a week ago, I think it would be the correct strategic solution to this, unenviable, problem.

No, he only ever had a maimum of about 200 to 300 AV in Karachi and he's evacuated that ( mostly to Ahmadabad ) over the past week or so as he realised I was threatening to cut his forces in half.

I'd say that right now he has pretty much every combat unit except the Karachi fort at or south of Ahmadabad. So he could fort up in Delhi if he wanted to or he could run for Burma. I think it is too late to run for Burma but Delhi is definitely doable... and if I were to be drawn in by that he could then try to land at the coast at either Karachi or Bombay and counter-dislocate my entire setup. Obviously though I'm aware of that risk and will try to ensure it doesn't happen.

This is unclear without a map. I'll take a pic tomorrow to outline the situation in India to make this clearer.

*sigh* The day after I move 48 Zeroes from PH he reads the air balance figures and decides to raid. Crappy F'ing design decisions to breach FOW in such a basic manner. Can anyone in the current programming team tell us WHY the air balance figure cannot be removed? They don't have to change ANYTHING else, just stop it being displayed in PBEM games.

I lost a lot of G3Ms on the ground but, again, the Allies lost an excessive number of airframes and pilots.

And below you can see the situation in India. As you can see I'm beginning to spread the Allied defence out. He has chosen to defend the northern axis heavily which means rapid progress in the middle again. If he isn't careful I might even be able to cut him off from Delhi... which would be disastrous for his attempts to delay me.

TF 1062 encounters mine field at Noumea [New Cal] (66,117)

Allied Ships
DMS Southard
DMS Elliot
PC Valk
AP Le Maire, Mine hits 1

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

I think this is a important result.
a) Another AP carrying troops hits mines at Noumea proving that the Allies are sending troops there ( no major surprise there)
b) he is escorting these ships with DMS... These are rare, valuable American ships, more valuable even than a CA so I am interpreting this as meaning that there is a major Allied naval committment to the defence of Noumea. In about 2 months time I will be invading all along this region so the more he commits here now the better for me.

Yawn.

Interestingly enough the Allied BB TF near Shikula has finally shown up again at Nikolaevsk na Amur. I have had about 80 Bettys and Nells at Toyohara waiting for this TF for the past few days so, hopefully, they'll launch and manage to score a few torpedo hits.

Well, that was certainly a mistake. I saw a gathering of about 150 Allied bombers in the airbases around Vladivostok and wanted to discourage this/draw retaliatory strikes down on Jaanese bases guarded by my Mikes but, unfortunately, the FlAK was just too devastating. Half of the Sallys committed to the raid were destroyed even before they could drop their bombs.

More sacrificial recon. I was very interested to see that there were no significant combat units at Delhi, only artillery and base forces. Looks like the Allies are fully committed... so I'm committing my reserves. Another 400 AV of armoured formations and 4 divisions ( patterned after a Soviet style All Arms Army of 4 Rifle and 1 Armoured division) along with an Army HQ are going to be committed to the front. It should speed things up considerably now that the enemy reserves have been drawn in.

Damn, I was tryign to complete the northern pincer aimed at Delhi from Ahmadabad but, unfortunately, the Tank brigade leading the charge just didn't have the power to punch through the reinforced division the Allies put in its way. No matter I have a division and another Tank Brigade moving up. In 4 days time I should be able to attack again and this time should push the Allies back.

The Allied force in the north is fragmenting with their army being spread over 5 hexes and ripe for defeat in detail.

*chuckle* The 1400 AV at Tsientin generated an AV of 9,300 even without Level 9 forts. It looks to me like I should be able to deplete my forces in China even more than I had previously planned. If 1400 AV in a city gets multiplied by a factor of 6.5 with Level 3 forts and incomplete preparation levels then I should be able to hold my cities with garrisons of 700 to 1,000 quite easily + a small rapid reaction force of a couple of Brigades. So, out of my 6 cities this should allow me to free up another 6 divisions for the defence of Manchukuo/offensive action elsewhere.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/08/42

TF 1103 encounters mine field at Noumea [New Cal] (66,117)

Allied Ships
AK Elcano, Mine hits 1

Allied ground losses:
13 casualties reported

More Allied troops and ships die at Noumea. Good, in 2 months time I'll have an additional 4 Garrison Divisions and 3 SNLF Brigades available and will come calling. Why use the 40 Exp Garrison Divisions? Simple, if I don't use them now then when the Americans counter-attack they will have no more than 55 Exp. However, if I use them offensively now they will get closer and closer to 99 Exp and will thus be able to offer twice as much resistance during the American counter-offensives of 1943 and 44. It wasn't my intention to capture all of Australia during this game but I am beginning to think that it might be worthwhile invading Australia even before the Soviet Union is neutralised. Obviously I'm assuming that India will fall in the next 6 weeks.

The terrible performance of my Sallys over Shikula really illustrates the massive gulf in performance between them and my Me-264s. I've got to say that the more I use the Me-264 the more I am convinced that it is the way for Japan to go. Initially I only planned to build a core of Me-264s but to have most of my bomber corps equipped with twin-engined bombers. Now I think I will just relegate the twin-engined bombers to my training corps and equip my entire force with Me-264s. I've drawn up plans to begin expanding my Mansyu production to 1,000 engines per month so that I can produce 250 Me-264As, Bs and G9Ms... probably 120 Me-264As, 60 Me-264 Bs and 90 G9Ms per month and make them the mainstay of my entire bomber force.

Must... not... say... how... much ... I LOVE the Me-264 . Over 40 Allied planes are destroyed on the ground, the airfield closed to offensive missions and 135 of the supplies at the base destroyed. One of my planes burst a tire on landing but that's it as far as losses go . I couldn't even begin to consider these sorts of strikes if I only had Sallys and Lillys.

Excellent. The Allied AV is 298, my force comprises approximately 900 AV and so the Allies look like they are in deep trouble. I'll move out here after my entire force is online sometime around the 13th or 14th of March. I don't want the situation in the south to deteriorate until such time as my armoured units have made good progress in routing the enemy forces in the middle of India southward.

I'm going to stop these raids as my Betty and Nell pools are non-existent with many of my Betty and Nell squadrons having twice as many pilots as planes.

at least you don't have to worry about fatigue .

I'm a tad concered that if you do decide on a Me264 major force you might be falling for the well documented allied 4E Fanboy syndrome where 4E are king and 2E dont do anything .. making the game imo a bit too far off historical. also completely pisses off the japanese player by doing so. it seems this plane is a 42 superfortress by comparison to the regular japanese bombers so i can't really blame you for wanting it so much

but as this is (another) of your well written and frankly great AAR's I'll still be gripped .. just concered thier overuse might demoralise your opponent too much.

Aye I must admit I do wonder if they are a tad too early in the game as they do appear (and it may only be appear) to be more dangerous than any other bomber my recollection is a little vague now but I think the allies get 16 4E bombers a month now rising to about 30 ish a month when B24D's appear. Its the range as much as the bomb load. You get three types of 264 don't you ? a resource/af/groundattack bomber, torpedo plane and a okha type bomber ?

Thanks guys.

Me-264 vs B-17.
Armour and durability are the same. Top speed is very similar but the B-17 has a massive advantage in ceiling. In essence the B-17 can fly above many of the Japanese fighters but the Me-264 is stuck in the low 20,000s. The Me-264 is longer-ranged being able to operate out to a maximum range of 43 hexes and a normal range of 33 hexes compared to the B-17s 23 hexes maximum and 18 normal. In termsof punch the B-17 can drop 6,000lbs of bombs while the Me-264 can drop 10,500 lbs.

Me 264 compared to the B-24.
Essentially the B-24's range gets pretty close to the Me-264 and its bombload is also increased to 8,000 lbs. In most other categories the B-24 and Me-264 are pretty identical.

Me-264 compared to B-29.
The B-29 carries 10,000lbs of bombs to almost the same range as the Me-264 but does so at higher altitude, more quickly and with greater durability.

So, I would agree that the Me-264 IS pretty much an early-war Superfortress but in this mod I tried to create a flavour wherein the Japanese tried to go for quality as opposed to quantity while the Allies tried to swamp them with quantity. In early 1942 this reliance on quantity isn't as obvious as production is only ramping up but by mid-42 the Allies are getting over 70 four-engined bombers and 300 twin-engined bombers a month. I'm flogging my economy to death to build Me-264s and I'm having trouble getting production over 120. I think that so long as i cut my shipping production and armament assembly I should still be able to double my production of engines over the next 3 months BUT it is only going to come at the expense of massive sacrifices elsewhere.

Also I've had to ramp up my bomber production plans due to the pressure I'm under. It is still early March ( 3 months into the game ) and 6,000 Allied and 4,000 Japanese planes have been destroyed. To put that into perspective I have less than 3,500 planes on-map and so I am being forced into doing whatever I can to cut my losses. To be honest I'd trade half the bombload of the Me264 if I could halve my loss rate and save more pilots. I am down to 45 pilots in my pilot pool at the moment ( IJAAF and IJNAF combined ) and that's only 4 days worth of trainees. In addition just today I've had to disband 4 dive-bomber units, 4 Nell and 2 Betty units. My fighter pools are holding up, although their experience is falling, but my bomber losses have been horrific and the Me-264 is my solution. I don't expect that many others would be forced into this same corner in most games and so I don't think most others would end up producing as many Me-264s.

I always forget this game is based off of CHS where ranges were all increased the range on the Me looks obscene but I forget that all aircraft have the ranges increased.

Donbt over estimate the value of High Altitude attacks as an advantage the results are almost always pathetic forcing you to go lower.

Andy,

No worries, my preferred attack altitude is 3000 to 6000 feet. FlAK has to be murderous to get me to go over 16,000. Also it is my understanding that the ranges aren't based off CHS. They are based off what was really achieved... in many cases this is the same as CHS, in others it isn't. As to the Me-264s range. Actually it get short-changed as regards range. The game can't handle its range as it could stay up for over 24 hours so it trades a bit of range for bombload in this mod. A fair trade since it will not often be used out to its maximum range.

Damn, another 5 Sallys are destroyed by FlAK. Next month I get my first twin-engined, armoured level bomber, the Ki-48 II. It should help my training runs survive this sort of FlAK. FlAK losses are really beginning to bug me, they are almost 1/4 of my total losses and I'm disbanding a Sentai or Chutai almost every 3 or 4 days now just to keep the ones remaining up to strength - pilot levels aren't too bad as many of them survive the crashes on landings which total their bombers.

Ah this will be the enemy reinforcement convoy for Karachi I've been waiting for. If it had only waited an additional 3 days I would be sure of defeating it's intent... not preventing it landing but defeating its intent. My basic concept is that if I destroy most of the convoy at sea some of it will get away and the divisions being carried will rebuild and be available for combat again within a half year or so. I am looking for something a bit more permanent so I will let them land, try to bottle them up in Karachi and then destroy them there. That will remove these two divisions ( I am assuming that I am seeing the two US divisions which were transferred from CONUSA to Aden) from the Allied ORBAT for a total of 550 days which will give me a lot of time to press my advantage.

I always forget this game is based off of CHS where ranges were all increased the range on the Me looks obscene but I forget that all aircraft have the ranges increased.

Donbt over estimate the value of High Altitude attacks as an advantage the results are almost always pathetic forcing you to go lower.

ditto missed that also.. hence the assumed huge range advantage .. sorry. Anachitka will unhinge the allies a bit , hope you capture /brought a lot of supply with you. what size is the airfield ?

Rob,

Actually I'm abandoning it. I will leave a Naval Station unit there just to prevent them from taking it back too cheaply but there's no point tying 100 AV+ of troops down holding it. Its only major importance was as a waypoint for US squadrons making for the Soviet Union so it isn't important in and of itself. In any case if Jagdfluger wishes to waste another 5,000 troops on garrisoning it then I'll happily move back in and recapture it and send them into the POW cages.

Monter,
Will do. Basically though I have the Aleutians, Hilo and Palmyra ( but not Midway), then the line turns westward through Kwajalein and down to Guadalcanal. I then own everything north of Australia except for Burma, Diamond Harbour and Karachi. Soon though I hope to have Karachi and south-eastern India.

TF 45 troops unloading over beach at Bandjermasin [BNO], 27,64

I've finally managed to get Madoien suppressed sufficiently to be able to risk an unescorted convoy to Bandjermasin. This convoy is carrying 3/4 of a Brigade and should suffice to wipe Bandjermasin's defenders from the map. So long as Madoien remains suppressed the DEI should now be much safer for my shipping, especially, as I'll be able to assign significant assets to ASW work now that I have sufficient Me-264s available to begin taking over from my twin-engined papier mache bombers. At present my plan is to assign 42 Me-264s each to India, China and the Pacific with another 42 planes going to the Soviet Union once they become available.

Interestingly enough it looks like the monthly upkeep on my Me-264s is outrageously high and will severely limit their utility. It looks like 42 Me-264s require something on the order of 25,000 tons per month to remain serviceable. OUCH !!!! How many supplies do the Allies need at a base when basing 50 B-17s there? I cannot imagine it is as much as my 42 Me-264s.

The Allies attack again but I don't think you could call this a success. 91 planes sortie, 46 are downed and not a single bomb hit is scored. In return 11 of my fighters succumb to their wounds but, again, several of my pilots survive the disintegration of their planes. My largest problem is that the Me-109 unit will not accept replacements and is, thus, slowly being whittled down.

The requirement for Ishikawajimas is skewed by the fact that 57 G5Ns are ready for production - requiring 228 engines. Almost all of them are, however, on hold in order that I can produce sufficient engines for my Bettys. Nakajima production will also no longer need to expand as once I get all of my Oscar I plants into production I plan to pretty much halt production and concentrate on expanding my A6M2 production farther. Why will I do this? Simple, I want to build enough A6M2s to continue providing escorts for selected raids well into 1945 and the A6M2 will auto-upgrade in mid-43 so I'd better make hay while the sun shines.

Given that I've turned off the vast majority of all auto-upgrades in this mod the Japanese really are in a difficult position when it comes to balancing current vs future production. Produce too much too early and you won't have the supplies available to produce more advanced airframes in the months and years to come. Fail to produce enough now and you won't capture the resource-rich areas you need to produce those advanced fighters either. Where's the balance? Damned if I know but I'd rather have more space than less given that soon I'll have to trade space for time s I'm gambling on taking everything I can.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/13/42

The SS L-9, last seen languishing in Manilla harbour during a bombing raid sinks south of Davao as it tries to escape to friendlier climes. Almost 60 Allied subs have been sunk so far and the Soviet submarine fleet is beginning to be whittled down as I am able to turn my army bombers' attention to ASW efforts once again.

Using one's premier torpedo-bombers in the ground attack role while an enemy carrier fleet sorties off your coast smacks of desperation.Three of my CVEs are at sea hunting his carriers. I won't get any decisive victory but I am hoping to reduce his carrier-borne fighter numbers to such a level that my Bettys and Nells will be able to attack the transports without fear of being massacred. Until the carrier battle is decided my torpedo-bombers will stay at home. Once it is decided they will strike.

Jagdfluger orders another raid. He must really be desperate to kill my shipping to continue to accept such losses. 40 of the 95 attacking planes are destroyed in return for a paltry 4 Japanese planes. Again, a couple of my pilots survive while all of his are lost.

And yet another raid . The DE Sanae sinks but it costs the enemy a further 31 planes to do so. Today the enemy have lost 71 planes over Hilo in return for just 8 of my own. They must stand down soon mustn't they? I am starting to get a little rattled by the Allied willingness to just accept such monumental losses. Since I'm at the end of my logistical tether I just assume he must be also.

Question: If the Allies disband a squadron does this squadron draw from the plane and pilot pool when it returns or does it magic planes and pilots out of thin air like scheduled reinforcement squadrons? If a disbanded squadron returns with planes and pilots NOT drawn from the pool then this, essentially, gives the Allies unlimited numbers of airframes and is a serious bug. Anyone know? According to my figures the Allies should be out of a number of types they are gleefully throwing into the fight at present.

Weird reason? What is the range of Zero? What is the range of Me-109? Now you know why...

Monter,

I don't think the range of the plane has anything to do with whether or not it will receive reinforcements. I always thought it just had to do with the presence of an Air HQ and/or sufficient supplies and had nothing to do with plane range. If it had to do with range then the Americans wouldn't be able to generate any new planes in PH since it is so far from any other major Allied base.
