(Going forward with version 1.64. Association upgraded successfully. )

Cincinnati, Sunday Sept 21.

Game 1: (Yes, the minimize button works). Warren Spahn faces Johnny Klippstein.
Top of the 1st -- George Kell leads off with a double! Red Schoendienst tried to bunt Kell over to second. He failed and Kell got thrown out but Red reached first. He steals second. Furillo flies out, and Red advances to third. Musial flies out.

Bottom of the 1st -- The Reds reply with singles by Phil Masi and Erv Dusak and a double by Owen Friend. Owen got injured on the play. Reds lead it 2-0.

8th inning -- 1 out, Musial on 3rd, Ennis on 2nd. Gil Hodges walks. Buddy Kerr hits a shallow fly to right. Musial tags, breaks for home and beats the throw.

Bottom of the 9th -- with a 4-2 lead, Spec Shea comes in to attempt the save. He gives up two singles and then the next batter hits into a 1-6-3 double play. Early Wynn wins his second game in a row and Spec Shea saves it. Lou Knerr is saddled with the 4-2 loss.

Game 2. The Bucs start Spec Shea. His opponent is Dizzy Trout (15-9, 2.63) . Trout had his control, and the Reds defeated the Bucs 4-3. Paul Erickson earned a save.

Despite this loss, with the Giants' defeat of the Phillies THE PIRATES HAVE WON THE NATIONAL LEAGUE PENNANT! They defend their NL title, and will move on to defend their World Series title.

For the last few games, the Bucs will play some of their young prospects and reserves.

In the AL, Tigers have won their 10th straight and are now 2 games behind the Browns, with 4 games left to play.

With Monday being an off-day and the pennant being clinched, the ending home stand is now anti-climactic.

Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Cardinals come to Forbes for a three game series. 25-year-old Woody Main gets his first major-league start. He struck out Floyd Baker to begin his career. Vic Wertz flew out to left. He walked George McQuinn. Wally Westlake grounded to short.

1B Don Lenhardt flew out in his first at-bat.

2nd inning. Main gives up a double to Gus Bell. He walks Roy Campanella (yes, the notoriously Southern-leaning Redbirds now have a black player). Main strikes out Jack Albright. Emil Verban walks. Bell scores on the groundout by Howie Pollet. Baker lined out.

OK. The kid fell apart in the 3rd and gave up 6 runs. No matter. He got a taste of the majors. He can go back to AAA and work on his game.

I guess those southerners don't like us very much. Gus Bell has gone 5 for 5 today.

The final was 7-3. Howie Pollet got the win and Main took the loss.

AL news -- the amazing Tigers have extended their win streak to 11, but are still two games behind the Browns.

In Pittsburgh, the veterans wanna play. They want to win at least 100. Right now we are 99-52. OK. Spahn starts tomorrow.

Wednesday, Sept. 24. Warren Spahn is now 25-5 and completed his 19th game as the Bucs down the Cardinals 7-1. Bobby Shantz (14-14) lost it. The Pirates are now 100-52.

Thursday, Sept. 25: 23-year-old George Estock gets the start. In the first inning he gave up a run but with two on and two out he struck out Roy Campanella. George ended up pitching 3 innings, giving up 3 runs, with 1 SO and 6 BB. Early Wynn pitched the rest of the game and got a 4-3 victory over Bobo Newsome.

On Saturday the Browns clinched the AL pennant despite losing to the White Sox 2-0. Cleveland defeated Detroit 2-1 on Friday and 6-0 on Saturday, making the Indians and Tigers tied for 2nd place.

Sunday, Sept. 28: The regular season ends with Spec Shea facing the Reds' Johnny Klippstein at Forbes Field. Klippstein defeated Shea with a 4-2 CG victory.

The World Series starts in Pittsburgh on Friday Oct. 3.

Minor-league report:

In AA, 1B Joe Adcock finished the season batting .322, with 12 HR and 80 RBI. He should be ready to advance to AAA in 1948.

Then there's P Carl Scheib, also in AA -- he went 11-7, with a 2.86 ERA. His stuff and control are of major-league caliber, but his pitch speed is slow (velocity rating 16). Is he ready to move to AAA? The jury is still out.

The starters for game 1: the Browns send up Dave Ferriss (20-10, 3.42) against the Pirates' Warren Spahn (25-5, 2.27).

The Browns' regular-season record (86-68) belies their strength. They have two twenty-game winners (Ferriss and Trucks) and a very strong 3-4-5 batting order (Ralph Kiner, .313/35/101, Joe DiMaggio, .299/19/84, and Ted Kluszewski, .289/17/62).

Game 2. Another pitchers duel, with Larry Jansen facing Virgil Trucks. It is cool in Pittsburgh, with the temperature 51 degrees and the wind blowing in.

With two out in the 1st, and George Kell on second, Del Ennis triples. Pitt 1-0.

In the second, with 1 out, Snider walks and steals second. Yogi Berra singles, Snider scores. Kell walks. Jansen pops out. Schoendienst walks. Musial walks. Berra scores.

Virgil's control has left him today. This inconsistency is exactly why the Bucs traded him off in June.

Two outs. Bases loaded. Del Ennis comes to bat. He singles! Two runs score. Bucs lead 5-0. Furillo ground out to end the inning.

Third inning. 1 out. Snider singles. He steals second! Duke lead the majors in SB this year. Yogi Berra singles, and Snider scores! Bucs lead 6-0. Jansen reached on the failed sac bunt attempt. 2 out. Kell follows with a single. Schoendienst grounded out.

To this point, Jansen has just allowed three hits.

Fourth inning. With 1 out, Ennis doubles. Furillo triples! Ennis scores. 7-0, Pirates.

Fifth inning. Berra gets his third hit. Jansen advanced him to 2nd on the sac bunt. Kell tried a sac fly, but Joe DiMaggio made the catch and threw out Berra at third.

The Browns scored one in the seventh.

Bottom of the seventh, 1 one out. The Browns have Johnny Hetki on the mound. Kerr doubles. Snider flies to right , and Kerr moves to third. Hetki struck out Berra to end the inning.

Jansen goes into the 8th. He's thrown 78 pitches, given up 1 run, 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1.

Bottom of the eighth. The Pirates pour it on. With one out, Kell singles. Schoendienst doubles, moving Kell to 3rd. Musial lines out and Ennis flies out.

Top of the ninth. Lou Boudreau singles. Barney McCoskey pinch hits for Bill Rigney. He hits a triple. Boudreau scores. Bobby Adams steps in. Single. 7-3.

That's it for Jansen. Ken Gables comes in. He pitches to Don Johnson, who hits into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Series becomes tied as Joe Dimaggio harmlessly grounds out and the Bucs win it 7-3.

After the game, the Pitt manager was questioned about lifting Jansen on the verge of a complete-game WS win: " It was simple. He was triring, and Gables was good against right-handers all season. I wanted to finish the game, so this was guy I chose to finish it. No mystery to it. "

(Note: right-handed batters hit .207 vs Gables in the 1947 regular season.)

1st Inning: Hudson walks Kell. Schoendienst tries a sac bunt but fails and Kell is out at second. No matter. Red then steals second. Musial flies out to DiMaggio. Schoendienst holds. Del Ennis then singles past Lou Boudreau, and Schoendienst scores. Pirates lead, 1-0. Furillo flies to center, and DiMaggio snags it.

2nd Inning: With one out, Snider singles to right, then promptly steals second. Berra grounds out, advancing Duke to third. Newcombe lines out to center.

Kluszewski singles past Schoendienst. Berra has a rifle arm, so no danger of an attempted steal. Bob Elliott singles in the hole. Boudreau pops out on an infield fly. Bill Rigney walks. Bases loaded, one out. Pitt manager KG Erwin elects to play the infield at normal depth. Catcher Bob Scheffing, miffed at having given up two stolen bases, doubles and clears the bases. Browns lead it 3-1. Newcombe already seems rattled -- he walks Hudson. Now the Bucs pull in the infield, looking for the hit and run. That's exactly what they did, but Johnson pops out to second, and the runners hold. Dimaggio singles, and Scheffing scores. Browns, 4-1. Kiner flies out.

4th Inning: Furillo singles. Kerr lines out to left. Snider doubles to left, and Furillo scores from first. Browns, 4-2. Berra flies out to DiMaggio, Snider tags, dashes to third, and beats the throw. Hank Majeski pinch hits for Newcombe. Hudson walks him. Kell singles, and Snider scores! Browns, 4-3. Schoendienst singles. Bases loaded, two out.

Musial singles! Majeski and Kell score. Pirates, 5-4. Ennis grounds out.

Early Wynn takes over on the mound. Scheffing strikes out. Hudson stays in the game, and lines out. Johnson flies out.

5th Inning: Furillo singles. Kerr bunts him to second. Snider grounds out, moving Furillo to third. Berra is intentionally walked. It pays off, as Wynn bats for himself and grounds out.

The Browns can get nothing going, and in the 7th bring in Ray Scarborough to relieve Hudson. Ennis doubles. Furillo flies out to Kiner, but Ennis beats the throw and moves to third. Kerr grounds out, and Ennis holds.

Duke Snider hits a 378-foot HR to RF! Pirates lead it 7-4. Berra flew out to right to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 7th Richie Ashburn enters as a defensive replacement for Snider.

8th Inning: Wynn stays in, and leads off with a single to left. Kell popped out, and Schoendienst then hit into a DP.

9th Inning: On a 1-2 pitch, Musial doubles to deep left. Ennis then singles behind first. Musial moves to third. Furillo flies out, and Musial breaks for home. This time Bob Elliott's throw caught Stan at the plate. Scarborough is relieved by Clayton Lambert. Strangely, Kerr is intentionally walked. Ashburn singles, and the bases are loaded. Unfortunately, Berra flew out.

Scheffing singles. Rube Novotney hits for Lambert, and flies out to center. Don Johnson hit into a 6-4-3 DP, and Early Wynn gets the 7-4 victory. Wynn struck out 3 and walked none.

The Bucs lead the series 2-1.

Game 4. St. Louis, Tuesday Oct. 7. Warren Spahn in the rematch against Dave Ferriss.

Nothing doing in the 1st.

2nd Inning: Kerr gets a single. Snider, on an 0-2 pitch, also singles. Ferriss walks Berra. Spahn strikes out. Kell grounds out and Kerr scores. Pirates, 1-0. Schoendienst grounds out.

Bottom of the 2nd: Spahn strikes out DiMaggio. Kluszewski singles. Boudreau singles, and Kluszewski advances to third. The hit & run is on, and Bill Rigney is successful. Tie game. Scheffing singles, but Boudreau gets thrown out trying to reach third.

3rd Inning: Musial singles, and steals second. Bob Scheffing's mediocre throwing arm is painfully obvious. Ennis walks. Furillo hits into a DP but Musial advances to third. Kerr hits a clutch single, and Musial scores. Pirates, 2-1. Snider grounds out.

Bottom of the 3rd: With one out, Johnson singles. Elliott then hits a HR, and the Browns lead it 3-2. DiMaggio doubles, then Kluszewski singles, scoring Joe D. Browns, 4-2. Boudreau grounds out, but the Pirates' ace is showing his mortality once again.

4th Inning: Berra walks. Spahn fails on the sac bunt. Kell flies out. Schoendienst fouls out.

Bottom of the 4th: Spahn walks Rigney. Scheffing reaches on the FC. Ferriss bunts Scheffing to second. Johnson then doubles. Browns, 5-2. Elloitt grounds out.

5th Inning: Musial singles and steals second. Ennis is intentionally walked. The Bucs call the hit & run, which works. Furillo grounds out, runners advance.

Kerr hits a fly ball to DiMaggio, but Joe slips, the ball tips his glove and it rolls to the wall. Musial and Ennis score! Kerr reaches second. Browns, 5-4. Joe D is charged with an error. One out, runner on second. Snider strikes out. Berra is intentionally walked. Spahn flies out.

Bottom of the 5th: Spahn blew up, allowing 3 runs.

The Browns scored another run in the 8th.

It ended 9-4. The series is tied at two apiece.

The Pittsburgh sportswriters are scratching their heads, trying to figure out what Warren's problem is. He's lost both starts, and by their standards, the Pirates should've swept the series.

Believe me, Spahn is as mystified as the rest of us. However, if it goes to 7 games, and if he's ready to play, he will start.

(Game note: I'm putting the series on hold until 1.65 is released.)

Game 5. St. Louis, Oct. 8. Jansen vs Trucks.

1st Inning: Kell leads off with a single to left. Schoendienst bunts him to second. Musial grounds out to 1st, and Kell advances. Ennis singles, and Kell scores! Furillo flies out.

2nd Inning: With one out, Kerr singles. Snider walks. Jansen singles, scoring Kerr from second! Kell grounds out, runners advance. Schoendienst grounds out.

3rd Inning: Musial singles. He steals second. Ennis pops out. Furillo strikes out. Hodges doubles, Musial scores! Kerr strikes out, but the Bucs hold a 3-0 lead.

Jansen has done well so far, striking out three and only allowing a hit to DiMaggio in the 1st. However, in the bottom of the 3rd, Scheffing singles and Trucks hits a double. Johnson flies out. DiMaggio grounds out, but Scheffing scores. Bucs, 3-1. Kiner flies out.

No score in the 4th.

5th Inning: Schoendienst singles. St. Louis calls for the pitchout, but Red is too fast. He beats the throw and steals second. Musial doubles, and Schoendienst scores! Bucs, 4-1. Ennis singles, and runners are at the corners with nobody out. KG calls for the hit & run. Furillo strikes out, but Ennis makes it to second. Musial holds at third. Hodges pops out. Kerr walks, and here comes Duke Snider. The Duke doubles, and clears the bases! Bucs, 7-1. Jansen flies out to right, but Bob Elliott injures his thumb in making the play. Hal Peck replaces him.

That was the last scoring in the game. Jansen gets the CG victory over Trucks. Larry pitched a great game, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

With a 3-2 lead, we head back to Pittsburgh for game six.

Game 6. Pittsburgh, Friday Oct. 10. A couple of surprises. Warren Spahn is 100% and is announced as today's starter. CF Duke Snider is worn down and will be replaced by stalwart defender and fast runner Richie Ashburn. The Browns send up Sid Hudson to face Spahn.

A chill in the air. 47 degrees at game time, with a 12mph wind blowing in from center.

The Browns have shaken up their lineup. "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio, now 33 years old, will lead off.

1st Inning: Spahn loads up the bases early, but escapes and gives up only 1 run.

Bottom of the 1st: George Kell walks. Schoendienst bunts, Kell moves to second. Musial flights to right, and Kell reaches third. Ennis flies out.

No score in the 2nd.

Bottom of the 3rd. Ashburn singles and steals second. Spahn bunts him to third. Kell singles, and Ashburn scores! Game tied at 1. Schoendienst is next. He stays patient, and draws a walk. Musial flies out to right, and Kell tries to reach third. Irv Noren, playing for the injured Bob Elliott, throws him out.

No score in the 4th.

Top of the 5th: Spahn racks up his 6th strikeout.

Bottom of the 5th: Ashburn singles, and again steals second. KG calls for the hit & run with Spahn at bat. He flies out, and Ashburn gets back to second. Kell flies out to DiMaggio, and Richie dashes for third. Joe D throws him out with ease.

No score in the 6th.

Bottom of the 7th: Ray Scarborough now pitching for Hudson. Gil Hodges singles. Johnny Barrett is brought in to pinch run. Barrett steals second. Buddy Kerr grounds out, and Barrett advances to third. Ashburn is intentionally walked. Hank Majeski is called to hit for Spahn. Once again, KG signals for the hit & run. This time it works. Majeski is out at 1st, but Ashburn reaches second and Barrett scores. Pirates take a 2-1 lead. Kell lines out.

Top of the 8th. A new battery for the Bucs. Early Wynn on the mound, and Yogi Berra to call the pitches. Wynn strikes out DiMaggio. Boudreau grounds out. Rigney singles. Kiner pops out.

The Bucs don't add to their lead in the bottom of the 8th.

Top of the 9th. This is it. We decide to pitch around Ted Kluszewski. He draws a walk. The Browns bring in Barney McCosky to hit for Bob Scheffing. McCosky lines out to Ennis. One out. Don Johnson walks. Runners on first and second. Wynn walks Irv Noren. Bases loaded. Bobby Adams pinch hits for Scarborough. The infield is pulled in. On the 2-0 pitch, Adams pops out to short.

Now, who would be the man to face this situation? Yep, just like out of the storybooks, it's Joe DiMaggio who steps up to the plate.

First pitch -- he hits a long drive to right field, and Carl Furillo snags it. The 1947 season is over.

THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES WIN THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE WORLD SERIES! Spahn got the victory, Wynn got the save, and Scarborough took the loss.

Post-season accolades:

The AL Cy Young Award Winner was the Browns' Virgil Trucks.

For the second year in a row, the Pirates' Warren Spahn wins the NL Cy Young Award.

The AL MVP was the Browns' Ralph Kiner.

The NL MVP was the Pirates' Del Ennis.

(Shall I move on to 1948? I'm still thinking on it.)

Thank you, guys.

Notes from KG: After taking off for a few days, I went back to work. I assessed the team's performance, and made up a list of our personnel needs.

For the major league roster: a left-handed 3B and a right-handed 1B. A lefty reliever.

For the minors: single A is weak. AA is good, and a few players may be ready to advance. In AAA, there's a definite lack of starting pitching.

I also made a list of players whom I'm considering releasing. This of course depends on the quality of the amateur draft. I haven't even thought of any possible trades -- yet.

Before proceeding to the draft, we did have one player retire -- 42-year-old 1B Joe Kuhel, who performed well for us the last two years. I was silently relieved that he did so, as he was on my release list.

The Pirates' 1948 outlook: the team is essentially unchanged from 1947, but a few younger players have moved up from the minors. KG made no trades during the off-season, preferring to build from the inside.

The latest on the Warren Spahn career watch: two straight Cy Young Awards. His style is maturing, and he's striking out fewer batters, but his endurance/stuff has increased, and look at the WHIP ratio. More and more he is developing into a finesse pitcher.

Cincinnati, April 19, 1948. On opening day Warren Spahn blanks the Reds with a CG 2-0 victory. He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.

April 20. The Cubs come to town, and Don Newcombe completes a 11-2 win over Clint Hartung.
