I'm reading the manual but don't see anything at all on "direct fire." Bombardment and regular combat, but no "one hex distant" direct fire. Anyone ??

Does this help from the manual pg.56

Some units, usually armored units, are capable of making Direct Fire attacks. They have a yellow dice on their Attack Bar showing their basic chance to hit with a Direct Fire attack.

pg. 57

A unit capable of Direct Fire in Defence will have a purple dice on its Defence Bar indicating its chance of causing a step loss to attackers.

hope this helps

Your welcome.

Hey Johnnie, did you know you can search the pdf manual for words or phrases? If not then I suggest you try it. Really saves time looking for certain things.

That helps if there is something in the manual about the topic you are looking for. Nowhere in the manual is direct fire explained that I could find.

And this is also a problem with printed manuals. Because the wanted to do one they had to have it locked down at a certain time. Now items like the Map Display Options are based on an earlier build than what was released so now the screenshot in the manual does not match the game and all the options are not explained.

Also just like Battles In Italy there is not explanation for evolving units.

Oh well I am resigned to the fact that they make good games but there manuals are not worth printing or waiting for the game just to get a printed manual.

But how do you conduct a direct fire attack with the armored unit? The manual makes no mention of the procedure to actually do the direct fire combat.

In the control panel, bottom left, where you cycle thru available unit actions ie: Arty, there is a direct fire button as well...click it and it will cycle to all units capable of "direct fire"...click on the units' pic in the control panel and pick your target. Same works for entrench etc.

I've been wargamming since the 60's but I can't figure this "direct fire" out. I get to the part where I can find the units that are capable of direct fire. But how do you have direct fire combat ? Do you just go to regular combat. In that case, direct fire units one hex away do not participate. I can get to the direct fire, unit but how do you fire ?? This is hardly intuitive. Thanks.

Click on the unit "capable" (already determined by the cycle button) in the control panel, then you scroll the cursor over the nearest targets eg: the next hex to your unit (or farther if in LOS) that is capable and the "dice" will show up...pick your target by clicking on it and hit the "resolve combat" button...Voila.

JSS & TheHellPatrol:

Thanks. Problem solved. The picture in the thread (from JSS) showed me what I was looking for. Also shooter must be in LOS (obviously) and target must be a direct fire target (not so obvious). I thought opportunities would be much more frequent. Thanks again.

Well, we both learned something. I didn't know you can fire more than one hex...going to look at the manual again. They could have gone into a little more detail about some things in the manual.

One more thing that isn't obvious... if the target is direct fire eligible (i.e. can be hit) and is entrenched!... it is no longer a valid direct fire target.
