Officially, we don't know; unofficially, it should. At least one person on the forum has said that they use Vista without any trouble. However, we on the development team have never tested it ourselves, so we can't promise anything.

Is anyone out there using Vista?

I have heard of one glitch involving Vista -- clicking on the quick battle screen while it's running seemed to freeze the timer for that screen somehow and kill the animations.  The battle finished normally when that happened, but the player couldn't see anything while it was running, though he could play out his games (he learned when not to click on the quick battle screen).  I've only heard one report of this -- Vista must handle Window timers differently??

We don't officially support Vista, I don't even own a copy yet -- so I can't make any guarantees involving Vista.  Obviously we're going to have to start supporting it for the engine at some point soon, though it's unclear whether we'll have support for FOF or not, it would make sense for us to try to work out any Vista kinks in the FOF engine if they are not too problemmatic.

In case anything I've written was unclear, I should repeat: we don't offically support Vista.

I have vista and the game runs flawlessly so far. I built a brand new system two weeks ago and the game is running much faster then the previous system. I am waiting for the patch before I give a thorough testing to the software (a really long game). Vista overall is a pain and if I hadn't spent the $100 on the license I would already be back on XP.

Well as the Matrix guys are doing software development you should be able to get an MSDN license from Microsoft for testing and development purposes, and then you can play with all sorts of configurations and settings, virtual machines, vista whatever as you get a bunch of licenses for all things MS provided that it is for testing and development, and you also get the beta stuff. The whole thing can be very usefull.

We're already working on testing all our games with Vista. We (Matrix) have a copy of Vista and a test system for this purpose. It takes time though and I expect it will be a month or two before we've gotten through this. Eric (Western Civilization) does not have a Vista system yet, but we'll let him know if we find anything with Crown of Glory or Forge of Freedom.

If a title works flawlessly with Vista, we'll add Vista to the list of supported OSes for that game in the game and store lists.

Because of the many problems with pre-release versions of Vista, we decided to wait on compatibility testing until the actual final retail version was out. Even so, they really need to get to SP1 and get some drivers fixed from what I've seen so far before I would consider recommending it over XP SP2.

Regards,

- Erik

I have Vista Home Premium (Came with new PC) and FOF runs perfect w/o any problems to report whatsoever on my sys Intel P-D 820 w/ 1GB of DDR2. In fact I've run other programs in the background as well including an online game (EVE) which steals from resources and still no problem to my pleasant surprise!

Also, a great game this is and I'm going crazy waiting on the patch/improvements...

Thanks again to Matrix for another winner and corruptor of my time!

Later,

Lrfss

I installed FOF on my Vista machine, but after the starting sequence it closes. I got an error message the first time saying it required flash.ocx, which MS no longer ships with windows. I found a suggestion on the web which indicated that copying and renaming flash9.ocx to flash.ocx would resolve the issue, but when I installed flash I just got a dll (NPSWF32.dll) in the Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash directory. I copied both flash.ocx and flash8.ocx from my XP machine to that directory. I still get the same result, FOF loads, the load screen completes, and the program exits.

I know that FOF does not support or claim to run on Vista, but since others say it works on their installations, I was wondering if anyone had experienced this or had any ideas.

thanks,
Mike

You could get rid of the animation.

Ericbabe:

No freeze on any screen thus far and I prob have at least 80-100 hours into this game with no problems!  No doubt all drivers should be current with whatever your using and also maybe some of the freeze related problems could be in the Graphics Card and or Driver issues?  For most I would think it would be Driver related and not so much the card assuming the card is within a few years old or so.

I have only played the quick battles for the first maybe 20-30 hours, after that it's Detailed Battles all the way for me!

Good luck!

I played around for a couple of hours last night as the Union. I only had one temporary freeze, and that was while trying to exit. When I went to task manager to end the program, it suddenly un-froze.

The game plays amazingly fast compared with my XP machine, of course I have a dual-core processor and 2 gig of ram vs 1 gig, which probably has something to do with it. No problems in quick combat or detailed combat, but it is funny watching the brigades run accross the screen after watching the march sloooooowly across before. The cavalry charges are especially entertaining, and now "AT the double-quick, ADVANCE!" is really at the double-quick.

Can't wait for the patch to get back to some serious gaming!

Interesting to hear that Vista makes the program that much faster along with the 1GB of RAM. Hope to soon have 4GB of DDR2 667MHz RAM for my new compooter, it has 2GB now, while my old one has 3GB of DDR 266MHz RAM, and the old one is pretty fast with the 2.5GHz Northwood Core P4 OC'd to 2.8GHZ, and the RAM is also slightly OC'd, makes a difference even with that small amount of OC'ing.

I was running a much slower 1.8GHz Willamette Core P4 OC'd to about 2.1GHz with only 256Kb of L2 cache, and FoF was slow because of the slower CPU.

My new CPU is a 3.8GHz Prescott Core P4 (#571) with 1MB of L2 Cache and Hyper Threading, so wit the 4GB of DDR2 667MHz RAM it will be quite fast. Fast enough for my needs.

I just upgraded to WinXP in Sept. 2006, so it will be some time before I upgrade to Vista!!!! Such as when it is cheaper!! Down the road a bit.

Can I ask you what Model Number of P4 Dual Core you have??

Chris

I went with the T7200@2.0ghz. A long time ago (in the history of computers that is) I decided the best value was a couple of notches below bleeding edge stuff.

Thanx, but I am not familiar with a T7200. Sounds like a Xeon Server CPU. Only P4-D's I know are the 800 and 900 Series.

So, I have to go to the Intel site and look-up this T7200. Could have Soviet influence as in T-72!!!

Got it. It's a Duo-Core mobile Processor. Dual Core is older and not as good as Duo Core or Core Duo's, and Dual Cores are the P4-D's. Almost went with a P4-D, as I was bidding on Ebay on two of the 571 P4's and ended up paying $160 for the creature, as I got beat out at the lat minute for about $130 on the other one I was bidding on. I hate when that happens. Chris
