I'm a huge fan of Gary Grisby's Pacific War for DOS, so one could imagine my shear excitement when I was looking over this game. It looks like Pacifcic War * 10; however I have to ask this at the expense of being rude. What's with that $70.00 pricetag. It seems a bit pricey for a 3 year-old game. Actually when your done paying for the game itself ($69.99) and the digital download service fee (another $9.99) your looking at a $79.98 pricetag for a game that was released in 2004!? I guess what I'm really getting at (And believe me I feel repulsive for saying this) is this;= Is this game worth it? Also, I notice that the update patch, database editor; practically all downloads, updates and support files, were all dead links. That gives me even more reserve, I mean if I shell out the dollars to purchase this game is that what I have to look forward to?; dead update links? Anyway, I'm looking for any excuse to buy this game but.....

Since my purchase of this game in July of '04, I have purchased  7 or 8 "other" games for $30 or more that I no longer play.  I continue to play WITP several times a week (daily if possible).  The "other" games are no longer even on my computer.

The game IS still supported, and their are several VERY good mods and utilities available if you don't like the stock scenarios.

If you Liked War inthe Pacific, you will LOVE WITP

Your mileage may vary.

The updates and such aren't available to you until you register you copy of the game.

As for is the game worth it?...I think so very much. I have clocked hundreds of hours on this game. One full campaign playing against the AI will take months...PBEM will take years. When you are done, it is a totally different game the next time. No two games are the same.

If you are a micromanagement freak, this is the game for you pal.

Pacific War * 10 is not a bad description. The game is still actively supported by Matrix, and even more actively supported by the community here. If you look at the price in terms of dollars per entertainment hour you won't find a better deal anywhere.

I don't think you're being rude asking this question about the price. I thought the same thing to myself when I saw it. I debated about purchasing the game for at least 6 months before finally caving in.

This game sucks you in and doesn't let go. It has been the best entertainment investment that I've made in a long time.

There are no dead update links... Well, there might be, but that's because Matrix's FTP server sometimes goes into an electronic coma.

This game is still fully supported by the company, and there's really nothing out there that's remotely like it. You get a HUGE return on investment.

Been playing it since day one and almost thru my second campaign against the ai. Still working on getting thru it on pbem. So what am I saying. Buy it!! It is worth every penny and some.

If you are interested at all in the pacific war, then it is a must buy.

The game has it's flaws and the obvious regurgitation of old code is kinda questionable but it is still the most interesting game I've ever had on my PC. The fact that the lads still add features and correct bugs is amazing. Well worth the coin considering you may not buy another game for a year after purchase. Seriously, I'm easily one of the biggest critics but it is still a good investment if you like the genre. Buy it.

Pacwar was a great game. This one is even better. Nothing compares to playing a PBEM game with somebody. Definitely worth the money.

My thoughts exactly! I think if I divided the number of hours playing this game and also doing artwork, I'm about at $.00001 per hour.

GOSH I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

All links work here, just checked: http://wwww.matrixgames.com/games/downloads.asp?gid=294

The price made me hesitate, but I have to say, WITP is some real fine, old-school wargaming.  My opinion:

Graphics: 5, stock ones are looking rather aged, resolution is locked at 1024x768, BUT... community/mod support offer much improved choices, I'm a stickler for this stuff, and saw what the community had to offer before I made the purchase.
Sound effects: 8-9, pretty impressive for a game of this type, music can get old after a while, but can be easily replaced or turned off.
Gameplay: 10- thoughtful, consuming, wholly satisfying, all the detail you would want to manage and more.  When you pull off a successful operation or invasion, it's a great feeling. Plenty addictive, thoughtful brain candy.  Is it flawless?  No way, but sets some standard for the scope of what it accomplishes.
Historical Fidelity: 6-7, but again, some community mods like BigB, NikMod, CHS, etc push it to 10 no problem--lots of solid historical interpretation and gameplay enhancements.
Matrix support: seems like a 10 to me--I've seen no less than 3-4 patches since I started hanging out here last year.
AI: Slides from 8 to a 2 real fast. Good enough for a newb, or first campaign if you're playing Allies.  You are human, it is scripted, what can be done except go PBEM.
Replay Value: 10, no question here.

I'm not aware of any $9.99 fee, never heard of that. As for $69.99 I've spent a hell of a lot more on a hell of a lot less in my life. There is no other game like this.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback! I guess there's only one thing left to do; drop $69.99 and download this sucker.

Thanks again for the feedback; I was so looking for a reason to cave and buy this thing.

I would purchase both the download and the game itself.

Also, in terms of getting the game, I'd recommend it, it is the generally best war game out there. The A.I actually does want to fight and invade, which is good.

So yeah, definately worth picking up.

And no-one above mentioned that when you have played a couple of games (2 years...) you'll want to open the editor and change all the things you think are wrong with the OOB. You will then have many more hours of fun researching every minute historical detail and working in your changes.

This game is certainly worth it. I have never played any game longer than witp. I think it's been more than 2 years now. For the money the best entertainment I have ever purchased! If you are into ww2 pacific you can not go wrong.
