Q-Ball: I actually never thought about bombing resource centers but what you said make perferct sense!!! ...basically what you are saying is that IF he looses enough resources than he needs to bring in the supplies to repair the oilfields elsewhere, correct??? That is very devious approach I must admit! ...damn, I really should start to understand the Japanese economy better since I'am playing with them in one of my other PBEM!

The Idea why I have bombed the Oil is to keep him from getting HI thus preventing him from expanding his airforce too quickly.

Toboali is intact... and I'am not sure he has actually landed there yet. (I will take a look when next turn arrives).. but one of the biggest resource centers are actually at Java to my knowledge. (Batavia, escpially)

Ouch, that is an agressive.. + 100 ships early??? ... January 1942 and Northern Oz is under assault??? I assume you skipped Luzon? That place is actually quite fortress. (IF I hand't blunder it already... damn)

Here is the current score. I especially like the aircraft losses section which is very good indeed.

It's June 1, 1942 in mine, and the score is about 15K to 7K.

Glad I could help! Bomb Resources, not Oil, that's my advice. Historically Japan lost the war on Oil, which is why it's a focus, but Resources are the bottleneck. Also, don't ever bomb Manpower. The Japanese have excess Manpower. In fact, Manpower consume resources, and you can't turn that off, so you are actually HELPING Japan if you bomb Manpower. Too many mouths to feed!

Once all the resources in the DEI are fixed, they are a supply source. There are something like 5000 resources total on Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Toboali, Kendari....that's 5000 supply per turn.

I'm not the production expert by any means, I am still figuring it out. But I do know that Resources are the limitation.

Losing all those transports is partly my fault, and partly a function of what you are trying to do as Japan early on. The #1 weapon for Japan early-on is the Nell/Betty. They completely shut down Allied shipping lanes. So, you are in a hurry to get airbases at Rabaul, PM, Koepang, Kendari, Kuching, etc etc, so that means sailing into trouble. Also, in Big B, it's easier for the Dutch to break through Cap and get bomb hits. My opponent also used his subs very well early on.

Hmmm...... I've thought about it! I just haven't had a good opportunity yet...

(BTW, I just realized I should let you know I'm reading this AAR and I'm still reading the one against Erstad. Since this game & ours are still early in the game, even if from different sides, I'll stay out of this one if you want.)

IMO a Java defense is certainly a viable option, particularly at this late date. Even if you take some losses, you can at least delay the Japanese another month or two. And then they'll need another month or two for their divisions to recover. By that time any deep invasions (India, deep into the South Pacific, etc.) would be extremely risky for them. Maybe I'm saying too much...

I may have missed a post or two - have you sent any ground reinforcements into Java?

Q-Ball:  I looked at situation and It is too late to start bombing resources. He has way too much of it in Palembang and Balikpan.  ...time is running short too since he will capture Luzon soon! (Damn again) ...so I will bomb those oils to dust it should take quite a lot of time to repair those and it does consume supplies. (looking at the bright side of things)

As for Manpower I agree completely. I have an game againts Erstad almost the summer of 1945 and tested bombing Manpower at Home Islands. Definately not worth it as you said.

I do like Nell's and Betty's a lot due to their range and they are real pain when playing as allies. It sounds that you are making a lot of progress in your PBEM!

Oh and You might not an expert on production but what you said makes perfect sense! Oil was bottleneck RL but Resources are bottleneck in Witp.

Ctangus:      ...dont you start getting any ideas now Chuck!  ...I'am screwed as it is with Japan in our PBEM!

You are welcomed to read my AAR's. I have nothing againts that. As for the game againts Erstad where are actually reaching the summer of 1945!!! It feels somewhat odd... I mean it was quite longtime we started it... Dave will be out of town next week so that PBEM will be halted temporarily.

I think it will be May 1942 before Java falls... and it is an viable option to fight it out but than again it really depends on the situation.

As for deep raids... just be on your toes!!!

I haven't sent that much as in reinforcements to Java. (Ground troops)... but I have bulked up the ABDA airforce and the losses are piling up for both sides that is for sure.

Game date 8th of April 1942

Donnie stated on his email that things are about to get intresting... whatever that means is unsure but I would reckon that invasion of Java is about to begin.

As I said above to Q-Ball it is too late to focus bombings onto resource centers. Allthough I do agree with that it might have been even more worthy target.

Other NEWS

At Luzon Manila is about to fall. Donnie has moved some 21 units into capital and more is on reserve.

At DEI some ABDA bombers managed to break through enemy CAP and bomb enemy BB's. Unfortunately no hits reported.

At Ichang my assault againts the base failed. I'am keeping Donnie on his toes. The Chinese troops trapped South of Homan are now wiped out. That is 50 000 troops lost.

That is a lot of aircraft shot to pieces. I would assume this carnage is only going to get tougher. Japan has actually now lost more aircraft than allies in total!

can´t see anything why those BBs should sink! I don´t even think that they suffered damage! Why should they be damaged? None of your bombs penetrated so what should have caused real damage. Perhaps a couple of sys points more but that´s it IMO. BBs are the only ships in Brian´s mod that are bomb proof (except those 2000 lb AP bombs).

castor troy: Thanks for the feedback/input and questions. I don't have a clue about IJA pilot experience but the losses have been very high for both sides. I would assume that those pilots are fatigued and low morale... maybe he is having issues with pilots pools too. He has lost some 1700 aircraft already and a lot of them are from air to air combats.

As for the BB's well they propably are immune as you said. (Just been very unlucky that my Beauforts have been unable to hit them with torpedoes... they just refuse to take off a lot of times )

Allthough Donnie did state following regarding his BB's and CV's:

"Your B17s inflicted about 50 hits on my BBs sailing past South Bornea then your whole Java air force hit them and put about another 100-150 500lb bomb hits on them.  They will be lucky to make it home.
Spotted the British CVs!  They got the first strike in and hit KB.  Our counter attack did OK but another damaged ship with two torpedo holes below the waterline will be almost impossible to save." Basically he said that those BB's are severely damaged.. allthough this might propaganda and FOW!  ...but I think CV Shokaku is doomed... 2 torpedoes = At least a lot of yard time.

ooops, I must have missed something. 200x500 lb bomb hits on the BBs? Well, they won´t sink as those bomb hits can´t penetrate the armor, but the fires should have done a little more damage than just a couple of points of sys damage, would gues they are around 20 sys damage now.

But the statement about the BBs being lucky to make it back home is certainly propaganda!

Castor .. that thought occured to me too . BB's don't sink from 500lb bombs . might lose a bit of secondary armourment but thats about it afaik .. maybe he's spoofing you Aztez ?

Also that carrier attack too . darn lucky imo .. left KB with NO rookie pilots and full compliments iirc so unless lots have been atritted he should still have anm elite force. And he's being a bit careless with the new arrived trained ones too. (unlikely).

Actually did rather well there imo Aztez .. those old R Class Brit BB's are hard to get into meaningful combat with thier woeful speed . you docked them in batavia for a final try at saving them ? I'm glad to see donnie using the paras in meaningful attacks .. sort of continuing my tradition .. VP-Andaman is-Akyab :) .. sabang was prepping next but he's obviously changed all that so not letting any secrets out there. Be very very careful garissoning your indian bases on the border with burma after that massed attack.

good fun

Castor & Rob: I think you guys are correct. He was definately bluffing by the looks of things. Too bad I didn't get any good torpedo runs previous turn.

I think I did Ok with those British BB's. As Rob said they are slow and I haven't found much of a use for them in my earlier PBEM's. At least they went down fighting. Actually those BB's were enroute towards Palembang when they met their destiny. (I had them on surface combat orders)

Yeah, definately need to keep an eye for those paratroopers. He did land in some 13 000 men in single turn!

Ok. The turn is in and time to update.

Lets start with the BB's we have discussed.

"No, those BB's are hurt pretty bad.  Not a lot of float but a good deal of system, primarily from the fires I think." ..so basically he is saying it is not propaganda and those ships are actually hurt. Well, that is good news. Also, Donnie said that BB Nagato is doomed. She becomes the 2nd IJN BB to be sunk in this war.

CLAA Columbo, Torpedo hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
CLAA Van Heemskerck, Bomb hits 1

This was expected to happen. At least these guys gave it their best and I might be able to salvage few RN ships from Java too. Otherwise RN is already reorganizing in India and is still a force to be reckon with.

Allied HQ has no comments about the future plans. A lot of ideas are floating around though.

BB Nagato is confirmed sunk now!

Ok. Donnie continued with his airstrikes around the DEI. A lot of planes were lost on the ground. He also landed an paratroop unit at Merak and seized the base. Naturally I will try squeeze the beachhead before it gets larger.

I'm suprised by the mannila defence . must be more supply than i thought. nice !

regarding medan .. use LR cap to try and prevent transports from flying in supply and jap troops .. doesnt work well in the game engine but what else can you use the duntch and RAF for anyway.

Well.. Citizens at Manila decieded to share their food and supplies

Medan is not the problem as Merak is in DEI... I would go with aggressive LRCAP but that is not worth it just yet. I need my fighters in defensive duties elsewhere.

must be trained monkeys in those Zeros, tired and badly led ones too

RE the LRCAP .. i was wondering if just a 'few' AC might stop transports without escorts, not by shooting them down but just because the game doesnt like sending in unescorted strikes (unless its a CV vs CV combat ), maybe the same holds true for transports , frankly i have no idea (probably not though now i think about it )

good luck

Hi Rob... Definately they are showing fatigue!  ...BUT Monkeys!

I haven't had too much success using the LRCAP!  (Basically never)

...bloody past few days!!!

Oh, its MAY 1942 ---> RAF gets squadrons upgraded!!!

Game date is 1st of May 1942

South of Australia Carriers Clash

Well, US carriers have been sailing towards the enemy for longtime. I neglected even their upgrades since I knew IJN carriers were lurking South of Java.

This was a gamble BUT it wasn't total risky move.. (That why I checked his CV force with the RN)

...and I was more than pleased with the first blows...

US Carrier Fleet near Oz

I didn't retreat my forces and again it paid off. I found CV Soryo cruising around and my bombers did short work on her. (confirmed sunk)

Donnie stated that he has 5 operational fleet carriers left. (minus CV Shokaku which is badly damaged by RN) ...so I gather CV Kaga and CV Akagi are doomed too. I will patrol the seas for an while to see what else I can hunt down due to the fact that enemy in fleeing.

The funny thing is that Donnie has tailed my CV Fleet all the way from SW Pacific.  ...I wasn't aware of this and thanfully not since I might have called off the whole operation.

Confirmed list of sunk enemy vessels. Basically all of the capital ships lost are linked to the battle of Java.

WELL DONE !

Agressive defence seems to be working out rather well imo. Donnie must be hurting after those attacks. so whens the planned invasion of the home islands going ahead?

Hi Rob! ...I'am afraid that last turn turned up more bad news to Donnie.

BB Yamashiro and BB Hyuga are confirmed sunk! Also I think BB Mutsu is in deep trouble after last turn. If all goes well than I think Donnie has lost 5 BB's in this adventure. I don't mind him losing couple of CL's either!

I am afraid this war is going to be short... Either your opponent abandons fairly soon, or you will be able to actively counterattak in late 1942/early 43. If you manage to counterattack fast in the SRA, his economy should collapse very quickly.

To be honest I have a similar feeling. Donnie has taken some serious hits in past turns. If he abandons this one than so be it.

At least I showed that aggressive defense is not all doomed If and when you get an chance to implement it properly. This actually was the main theme from the start.

I think that the huge mistake with Japan has been that he concentrated his airforce in too many places.

Also he kept his CV's south of Java for a longtime which meant that I knew wherer they were.

We will see what happens. As said I have some plans laid out already.

veji1 got me thinking and I do kind of feel bad for Donnie.

So basically I asked him if it is too much for him to continue this PBEM. I don't think any redo's are in order since all the things that has happened could have actually gone either way. It seems to me that both have gambled a lot and I have gotten better end of the "luck".

Anyway, I offered him an surrender and will wait to hear from him. If we continue than more carnage waits.. just wanted to be an "gentleman" with this one.

I think that Honda's Dark side of the Moon and this AAR show the risks, and potential rewards, yielded by force divisions for the japanese. dividing the KB and dispersing the Airforce are, 80% of the time, a recipe for disaster. except in the very early stages of the war and in secondary theaters ( at the  time), like Salomons, Southpac and part of DEI (eastern mainly) can the japanese player go for operations of strategical significance with dispersed forces.

Except if one is a genius/insanely lucky, it is more prudent to go one major operation at a time... It slows down the rythm of the expansion, but at least it averts disaster.

The game can still be interesting for both of you if you press forward quickly. But if you wait to get reinforced a bit and press on in early 1943, he will be crushed without any fun.

I say for the sake of the game, keep hitting him hard, make it bloody !!

BANZAI !!

(oups forgot this is the allied side...)
