I think that Honda's Dark side of the Moon and this AAR show the risks, and potential rewards, yielded by force divisions for the japanese. dividing the KB and dispersing the Airforce are, 80% of the time, a recipe for disaster. except in the very early stages of the war and in secondary theaters ( at the time), like Salomons, Southpac and part of DEI (eastern mainly) can the japanese player go for operations of strategical significance with dispersed forces.

Except if one is a genius/insanely lucky, it is more prudent to go one major operation at a time... It slows down the rythm of the expansion, but at least it averts disaster.

Yea, that's a good point. Japan has some tough decisions to make early. If you attack 50 places at once you're just inviting defeat in detail. If you concentrate too much there's a chance the allies will build a stop line somewhere before you want them to. Though I agree - it's largely more prudent to concentrate on one op at a time.

And then, as you said, there's a few geniuses, but I'm not that good playing Japan.

Well - Jari - well played!

Despite tbe "silence" this game is not stopped. I have just been very busy RL.

Here is an recap of the latest happenings. It was relatively quiet until few turns back when things intensified.

Game date is 9th of June 1942

Burma

I did try an offensive at Pagan and near Mandalay. This was an combined effort of British + Chinese SEAC forces.

Unfortunately this offensive has been temporarily halted and I have withdrawn into Mandalay.

RAF is now actively bombing resource centers around Burma. If he wants to stay there than he better bring in his supplies from elsewhere.

China

A lot of troops movements all around but no major ground offensives. However I did rout some 60 000 Japanese troops North of Changsa.

I think I can hold on here for good BUT Donnie hasn't given up here it seems.

DEI the battle of Java

...that is a strong invasion force at Darwin. The question is whether I should move some US ground units into Brisbane or leave them to New Caledonia???

Donnie is serious here that is for sure by looking at his initial strength.

I will definately move some Kittyhawks into Oz from New Zealand.

maybe hes flying in at 100ft ? OR more ominously flying at max alt then teleporting down to strafe the runway . anyway your killing zeros for little loss either way.

Darwin looks to be in trouble i admit. Maybe sail round a US div to Perth , by the time it
arrives you'll know his intentions better (i'm suprised he hasnt dumped all that on java
to be honest). And its a lot shorter walk from there too.

have fun

So, basically what you are Rob saying is that either he is bombing at 100 feet or at Maxium altitude = I'am screwed either way!

I'am definately not going to send US army troops to Perth since I cannot defend the whole continent. I'am thinking of defending Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The question is whether I should significantly reinforce Oz or not...!

Definately somewhat suprised that these troops did not land at Java too! Donnie was building this up at Kendari and Amboina so I guess the obvious target had to be Northern Oz.

I do have significant forces in Southern Oz so this is not no picnic for him.

Hmmm. One massive operation we got here!!!  ...That 4000 assault points and 200 000 men means at least 9 IJA divisions. (Propably even more than that) ...well plans are afoot to stop this nonsense in due time!

I guess it is safe to say that this is the main thrust! I'am just wondering how he can skip Java and DEI!

Oops... I pasted the wrong part of combat replay!!!

Anyway, Donnie is bombing a lot from +30 000 feet... really noway to stop these since my fighters wohn't climb that far up!!!

As for the game. Well, Japanese are moving South from Darwin which was seized. Some 11 units heading already out! That is not good but I'am building up stiff resistance further South so he better come prepared.

Donnie also has to have another invasion force lurking around. I would estimate that Singapore is the main harbour. Why? Simply because he has to start advancing towards Java. I'am somewhat dazzled that he isn't already low on supplies.

What am I doing.. <- that is good question. First I need to deal with the Oz offensive and once this is done than... There are some plans brewing already though.

Donnie mentioned that my 4E bombers flew 10 000 feet on naval strikes couple of times. Well, that was an mistake and offered an redo of turn so they could be set on 15 000 feet. (Redo rejected though) Well, his bombers seem to fly at + 30 000 feet along with some fighters too it seems!!!  ...impossible to intercept these guys. Personally I don't like but I guess I have to endure this for a while!

As for the game...

Ok. As I suspected there is definately another big invasion TF around Borneo. 17 Enemy units reported at Palembang and some 80 ships are anchored there!

Next turn there will be a large scale port assault directed againts Palembang. This strike will involve the 4E bombers + several 2E bombers as well.

Donnie continued his high alltitude raids againts Soerebaja. (It seems he is doing this at Burma too)

The game is now on hold. We are having some issues regarding fighter and fighter bomber alltitudes. Japanese have flown these raids in 30 000 feet and that is very alarming. Previous turn AVG downed 0 Oscars etc while those Oscars made succesfull airstrikes.

Basically I don't want the game turn into over "maxium ceiling" game which the only losses are operational ones. That is not good at all.

If the game is to continue Donnie needs to stop those raids. I have never flown my fighter nor fighter bombers anywhere near 30 000 feet. Call me stupid but the game engine cannot handle those kind of features.

Also as we already agreed with Rob the kind of Kamikaze strikes shown at Andy vs PzB are banned alltogether. This also needs to be agreed.

Also we are discussing about 4E bombers etc. Donnie has stated about their armour which is too thick well I agree. Unfortunately, there is nothing to be done about those. I have agreed the 10 000 feet and 15 000 feet limits for bombers that is no big deal for me.

These two issues are completely diffrent ...a) the high alltitude fighter/fighter bomber attacks which end up bombing at 2000 feet are a game engine bug  ...and b) The armour thickness doesn't mean that these bombers cannot be stopped.

(Actually Donnie was inches away of shutting down whole air operation at Java. I was running low on supplies = no replacements and the airfield damage was piling up too)

Also we are discussing the effectiness of City bombings. Well, these are what they are... mainly this issue is raised at Burma and DEI. (Both places could have been shutdown for good)

The outlook of the game is now very grim since I don't intend to give up on the fighter and fighter bombers flying +30 000 and above. I just feel that this is an non negotiable issue.

These two issues are completely diffrent ...a) the high alltitude fighter/fighter bomber attacks which end up bombing at 2000 feet are a game engine bug  ...and b) The armour thickness doesn't mean that these bombers cannot be stopped.

well, in some kind those bombers aren´t stoppable, as you can see. No matter what you put against them, there´s no chance to stop them and Donnie can´t place 300 fighters at every airfield to see a cap of 100 that is then able to take down 20 bombers. Soon you will get 150 4Es a month with more than 200 in 44) that can´t be stopped by Zeros, they laugh about Oscars (an Oscar will shoot down 1 out of 100 4Es) and even Tonies and Tojos won´t do so much damage that it can be spoken about "stopping" continuos raids.

The way fighters work against Allied 4Es is modelled EXCELLENT in the mod. Though now this excellent airmodel meets all those other things that are NOT excellent and it gets to a complete out of the whack situation as those 4E bombers are achieving kill rates between 3 and 5:1 when going in UNESCORTED. Again, the A2A fighter vs those bombers works excellent, but while this works so good, the availability can´t be changed. There won´t be only three dozen of those bombers be ready for attacks throughout the years until 44. There will be 300 combat ready every day and everything in range of 14 has to be abandoned. Abandon four times the bases in range of an Allied base level 5 and you are already near Japan.

castor troy : True. I never said that the 4E bombers are working as in RL due to their armour thickness. Still these two issues I mentioned are quite diffrent. It is good to hear Brian working on the improvements allthough this will be my only Big B mod game. (Nothing wrong with the mod though... just that I doubt I will start any new PBEM's anytime soon. Maybe the a rematch vs Erstad but that is pretty much it)

As for the game... well it is going to continue. We agreed on these new "rules":

Maxium. altitude for fighters and bombers is 27 000 feet.
4E bombers minium is 15 000 feet albeit when flying against city resources it must be 20 000 feet. (Should ease the pain at least somewhat)
2E bombers minium is 10 000 feet against airfields/ports/ground units. Againts City resources 15 000 feet (same as above) Againts Naval shipping these planes can flew lower than 10 000 feet.

Also I will rotate the city targets around once in striking distance of Japan. Meaning that not just oil nor resource bombings.

The game has been ongoing. I don't know what has been wrong but kind of have lost the taste of blood with this one!  ...hopefully temporary feeling.

Game date is 14th of July 1942

OZ

Donnie has seized Darwin and is about to enter Derby too. I think he has landed anywhere between 150 000 - 200 000 men into Australia.

Plans are afoot to deal with this threat and first measures are already in place. Allthough not visible just yet.

Meanwhile he pursuing my troops further into South towards Charter Towers.

DEI

The battle of Java is about to begin in full force. Donnie has landed 12 units into Merak just east of Batavia. I think he has been using barges and transport aircraft. Nothing I can do to drive them away.

Last turn the Japanese Naval forces sailed and bombarded Soerebaja. Allthough succesfull the price was high too.

Well, well... at least CA Kinugasa should be done for good! That would be the 2nd IJN CA lost in the war. A lot more bombing action is scheduled next turn.

Burma

I have opened up the river crossing South of Mandalay. IJA troops retreated to Pagan. There are now some 60 000 - 70 000 troops "surrounded" there. I will start assaulting the base with RAF bomber cover next turn.

More reinforcements to Mandalay are enroute and should be in action soon enough.
