We use PHBB 'cause it's cheap.  We aint got no sponsors except for the guys that donate a few bucks to pay the site costs.  It doesn't happen on the same date every year, it's just the last time was about a year ago.  Since the old site is no longer up since we moved to another "improved" version of PHBB that's hosted by a different server, problems have been less frequent.

What I don't quite understand is why people who do this sort of crap can't be shut down.  It's obviously a malicious web crawler, and the IP address is logged.  I've googled the IP of one particularly frequent web crawler and got hundreds of pages of results.

Yup that's why I used it for my internal project - but my "Anti-Hacker" guys looked at me like I was bananas .. they turned up their noses and I had to set it up and configure it myself. I think it has been replaced by a DOTNET app now.

Because it is pretty much "free" to write a bot .. and teenagers from all over the world can do it for kicks ... some of the "famous" viruses have been guys in PI or almost anywhere...the really big ones will get pursued by law enforcement .. but the "run it for a few days for kicks" guys apparently aren't worth going after physically. Certainly businesses spend big $$ on defense. The governments are the ones that go after the offenders on the offense.

We're back up now. I got a hold of Mad Cow and he reset it. He did it the last time following instructions from some PHBB geek on the phone. I'm having him write the instructions down for me so I can paste it on a note pad.

What I need is a teen aged kid. If there had been computers forty years ago, I would have been a geek. But all we had was slide rules. You youngsters are spoile. Back in my day we didn't have digital watches; we had to know how to read a clock. And no calculators either. We actually had to know how to do mathematics. You ever figured out a quadratic equation with pencil and paper?

Bah. Those were the days when men were men and sheep were nervous.

Welcome aboard. Despite what some people seem to think; it's not a nest of vipers. We're just more tolerant than a commercial web site. Anyone is free to make a fool of himself if he wants to, but you got to try really, really hard to get banned. Only one person has succeeded thus far, and that was for ignoring continuous warnings to stop spamming the place with his personal agenda in every thread in the house.

It aint right wingers only either. I personally selected a couple of mods precisely because their political views were the exact opposite of mine. And we can always use another geek to answer tech questions in the General store sub forum.

We got a couple of jerks who hang around, but most people have learned to ignore them, and I keep them on a short leash.

Death of a vodka bottle... ie - "dead soldier"...

i've read that when cleaning up after a party and there are some half-consumed containers of alcohol scattered about, some people like to consume them (all in a good cause of cleanliness) - such a practice is known as "bayonetting the wounded"

I love it!

Why oh why would somebody want to make themselves that ill?

Its called being a light weight and being young. eventualy you just develope a tolerance and become and alcoholic like me.

A lot of unattractive women in your bars, yes?

I don't think i've ever been to a bar where there were not a lot of unattractive women. Unless i was down in austin at a college bar and still then there were a few. Which we like to refer to as low hanging fruit. I've actualy found that the less unattractive chicks in a bar the better your oppertunity is to score with the ugly ones..............................I am so going to hell.

Thread line defacement

You may go to hell....but it will be for continuing to deface The Thread!
