FYI - convert some of your PBY Catalina's (range 12) to PB2Y Coronado's (range 15) and place them on the Line Islands to patrol. I know it isn't much, but the 3 extra hexes may come in handy. It's easy to forget to monitor the slow production of the Coronado's. If not them, then use the LB-30's for search as they have a huge range.

Look forward to mid-42 when your B-24's come on line. I have 150 in India and 200 in Australia. They are almost immune to anything through 10/42 the Japanese can throw at you.

Thanks ny59giants
I have already managed to get some LB squadrons to Australia and India... the numbers are not yet as big as you mention but they start to grow... slowly that is...

Gents...
Japs after bombarding Kendari from the sea and air finally landed in the place... the second invasion of Makassar has been delayed by our PT boats and today SS Truant sunk one of the enemy transports SE of Makassar scoring for hits on the ship
HMS Truant

We also bombed Amboina today destroying one Mavis on the ground and damaging the AF a bit. Also N of the target a ship has been spotted identified as a Jap CV moving W towards Celebes.

In the Java region some air traffic took place and we lost one plane with no losses on the Jap side. We also mined Merak.

More to the North in Malaya Dixie attacked Georgetown and Johore Bahru still without success but the bases won't hold on much longer.

Ground combat at Johore Bahru

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 28822 troops, 104 guns, 57 vehicles, Assault Value = 605

Defending force 5780 troops, 56 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 103

Japanese max assault: 528 - adjusted assault: 310

Allied max defense: 103 - adjusted defense: 157

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Japanese ground losses:
632 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
187 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Georgetown

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 22893 troops, 86 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 437

Defending force 11183 troops, 33 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 140

Japanese max assault: 395 - adjusted assault: 289

Allied max defense: 122 - adjusted defense: 177

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
331 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Allied ground losses:
231 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

More bad news...
We lost contact with the CV TF N of Baker Island.

That would be all, it was a relatively quiet day

Yava, it seems I've picked up a radio transmission intended for your troops in Malaya.

TOKYO RADIO

Hello all you fighting men out there in Malaya.  This is the Happy Hour, going at live to all you poor guys fighting in the jungle.  You know why I so happy today?  I have new friend.  His name is Cpl Bruce Brown of Australian Army, I meet him when he was captured near Singapore.  How are you feeling today Bruce?  You are being treated well?

I'm very well thanks.  I've been treated well since I was captured during the fighting near Singapore.

And do you have message to say to all you friends in Malaya.

Strewth mates, it aint worth fightin' and gettin' killed in Malaya.  There aint nothing there that's worth dyin' for.  We were told the nips couldn't stand up to us, but it turns out that they are the best soliders in the entire Pacific.  We were also told that they couldn't make good pilots but they must do, 'cause I aint seen the RAF for weeks.

And do you have words for family at home in Australia?

I'd like to let my Mum, Sheila, and my Dad Wayne know that I'm fine.  I've sent a letter through the Red Cross and I've been promised it will reach you all soon.

Now it is time for the news.

The American Navy and Royal Navy continue to loose ships at an alarming rate.  Japanese forces have sank today another ship near Midway Island, the cruiser was hit by three torpedoes and sank in minutes.  American workmanship is not good...  This brings the total number of ships sunk to over 100 including an aircraft carrier and the battleship Prince of Wales.

Heavy air actions over the island of Java today have resulted in massive losses to Dutch, British and US air forces.  Over 30 airplanes have been shot down today for no loss to the Japanese flyers.

In China, Japanese forces continue their efforts to liberate the Chinese people from the oppressive yolk of Western influence.

The Malay people are welcoming the troops of Japan as they continue to liberate the local population from the tyranny of British rule.  The Malay people have been welcome with open arms into the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

That is all we have time for today.  We end with specal request from Australian soliders in Malaya.  They ask for the song Lili Marlene.  This is Happy Hour signing off, take care Tommies and Diggers, we see you all soon.

Gents,
the cruiser that we had lost according to Jap propaganda was a mine layer coming back from Midway. So we highly recommend you, do not listen to the enemy.

As for today, we are slowly strenghtening the bases around PH. Troops , supplies, fuel is being shipped towards Palmyra, Johnston, Midway, Christmas Island. We still don't know where the Jap Carriers are but I think Dixie is going to strike soon. I don't have any idea where but I suppose he is going to attack one or more of the mentioned earlier bases and the shipping that takes place in the perimiter.

SW Pacific is quiet. Not much happens over there. Dixie is still fighting at Kavieng but our boys are not allowing him to capture th e base. Even his BBs didn't help his forces.

Now, my all time favourite Java region

Situation is as we can see on the picture, more supplies should reach the island tommorow and the 13th Australian Brigade should reach the place in the next 2-3 days.

In the Malaya Johore Bahru fell to the hands of the enemy...

Ground combat at Johore Bahru

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 28043 troops, 101 guns, 56 vehicles, Assault Value = 563

Defending force 5354 troops, 45 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 91

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese max assault: 382 - adjusted assault: 562

Allied max defense: 90 - adjusted defense: 45

Japanese assault odds: 12 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Johore Bahru base !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Wirraway: 3 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
371 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Allied ground losses:
422 casualties reported
Guns lost 12
Vehicles lost 1

That's all folks....

Gents,
the enemy launched a massive air strike aimed at Batavia today... Our pilots were totally outnumbered. The AF was bombed and sustained heavy damage. Moreover a Japanese TF is heading towards Batavia but we are not sure if it is not going to change course and steam towards Merak. We suspect the 4th Japanese Div to be on board of the ships. We tried to attack the enemy from air but all we hit was a PG with 3 bombs and one AK with one bomb. This doesn't look good with the AF damaged and the Aussies still one day from the Island. Hopefuly the enemy will hit some mines in Merak.

To the South near Makassar a Japanese CV TF that we have spotted earlier N of Ceram Island has appeared and sunk PC Gemma. It is currently moving N towards Soerabaja. Subs have been sent from the N to intercept the enemy.

We bombed Amboina today causing some damage to the AF. Japs landed more troops in Kendari, we shall see how long the base lasts.

In the Malaya region another attack of the Japanese 5th Division at Georgetown broke under the fire of our boys. Japs were forced to halt the assault for today.
However the enemy captured the undefended Kuala Lumpur. Japanese 4th Regiment and the 2nd Para Rgt took the place without firing a single bullet.

China front
Japs are bombing our units from the air where they can but we are organizing a small surprise for them near Sinyang and Kweilin.
Our Chinese frinds still fight the enemy in Canton... 2 Chinese Corps still keep the following Jap forces busy:
104th Div
19 bde
2 eng regiments
4 artilery units
That surely slows Dixie down.
In Hong Kong the 38th Div is still bombarding our positions but no attaks have taken plac in the last few days...

Still no sign of the enemy CVs that were last seen near Baker Island. They are gone and our patrol planes can't find them... I wonder where they are...
Our ASW TF attacked a Jap sub NE of Johnston Island but it seems it is still out there... hopefuly really damaged...

That would be all for today...

Yava, how is your supply level in Hong Kong?  I'm curious to see how well moving Chinese units into Canton helps the defense of HK.  In my game, Mynok moved some forces North of Canton on the first turn, to keep me out of the city.

Supply levels are good. I don't recal exact numbers right now but I will provide the whole HK situation in the next update if you like... prons and cons of working on one save file...

Gents,
today Japanese forces landed in Merak. It is the spotted earlier 4th Div. Two Jap troop transports hit mines and our castal artillery hit one of the escorting DDs two times. Estimated Japanese loses during the landing are about 1,300 soldiers. I don't think that our Dutch friends can last long in the place...

Our planes didn't hit any Jap ships... apart from one destroyer and a PG which was hit by HMS Trusty earlier that day. Batavia AF is amost like the surace of the moon... Japanese outnumber us in the number of planes almost 4:1!

We have also spotted another TF compromising mainly out of transport ships coming towards Java and some Heavy Cruisers following it... probably a bait for our planes. The whole situation does not look good.

In Celebes Dixie captured Kendari after unloading another wave of soldiers. More to the East at Ceram our LBs couldn't hit the Amboina AF. It seems Dixie transferred more Zeros to the place.

Peace and quiet in other parts of the theatre. Well Dixie's forces marched into undefended Kuantan.

That would be all

@Mike
I'll post the Hong Kong update a bit later while working on the turn.

@All
I would like you all reading this AAR to comment on the situation concerning the status of the war so far. I would appreciate any comments.

Gents,
a small update. More and more Jap soldiers unload in Merak. Another Jap ship hit a mine over there. The enemy bombed Merak and Batavia from the sea and later that day a massive air strike closed Batavia AF. Later that day first Aussies landed on the island.

Planes from Shoho lurking near the southern tip of Java attack Soerabaja today... two enemy planes were shot down. We tried to hit the ship from air but without any luck.

In the Central Pacific area Japs landed a small force on Baker capturing the place.

Nothing more of importance happened today.

Gents,
the enemy now has 40k troops on Java. These are the 4th and 16th Divisions... We are still being pounded from the air when it comes to the AF in Batavia. So far the enemy didn't attack our positions at Merak.

The spotted earlier Shoho moved towards Samarinda and attacked the base. We managed to destroy one enemy aircraft.

In the Malaya nothing much happened. Dixie again attacked Georgetown this time however he had 1:1 odds but still no luck. Anyways he must be really happy that he had managed to cut Malaya in half. Just as I have suspected from the beginning.

To the North... Rangoon was captured by the enemy... there are two options to consider... Dixie goes Akyab or Dixie goes Mandalay.... I would opt for the second one, don't know why but Mandalay is somehow sending some undefined magnetic field towards allied players who try to defend it.... not this time.

China
Another attempt to kick me out of Canton... no success. Odds 0:1 brave Chinese troops know how to slow down the enemy over here... I don't know however what Dixie's plan is so far... I am blocking him here but when I stop... will he move N? I would do that... One more thing to consider is the lack of enemy activity in the SE part of China... Suspicious...

Nothing much happened in the Pacific area... and OZ is also quiet...

However I don't know if we don't have a sync problem...

Gents,
a sad day when it comes to situation of our forces fighting in Malaya and on Java... When it comes to Java, Merak forces were almost overrun by the enemy. Some of our beaten soldiers retreated to Batavia which suprisingly was not hit by enemy planes today.

In Malaya Georgetown fell... but we are not sceptical! Our soldiers showed the enemy that they can put up a decent fight even against overwhelming numbers of Jap soldiers but... Georgetown is Georgetown and Mersing is Mersing... and here the situation doesn't look so good. The enemy almost crushed our poor defence lines with a one single attack. It was a miracle that our boys managed to hold ground.

China
a small photo update...

and the rest...

When it comes to the PM region of operations...
We have spotted a Jap surface combat fleet steaming towards Port Moresby... One BB and two CAs plus escorts if our pilots identified the ships correctly...
We shall try to intercept the enemy with our ships from Cairns...

Rest of the Pacific is quiet... too quiet...

Gents,
the spotted earlier and wrongly identified ships were in fact 5 Japanese BBs which pounded Port Moresby during night. They are somewhere near the southern tip of New Guinea right now.
The enamy also captured Lae.

Java
After capturing Merak Dixie will probably advance South to capture Batavia. The AF in there has been attacked from air today and we have spotted some Japanese CAs steaming towards the place. One of our subs managed to hit a Japanese troop transport heading for Merak.
Aussies are moving to Batavia... I hope they will get there in time.

Malaya
Japanese troops tried to kick us out of Kuala Lumpur today but without success. Also Singapore AF was a target of enemy planes.

Honk Kong and China
Suprisingly the enemy started a small air offensive against Hong Kong port. Few ships have been hit and one PT sunk. After the air raid enemy troops tried to punch a hole in our defenses... Fortifications level down to 3.

Canton again was a target of enemy air strikes and bombardment attacks... I wonder how long we are going to distrupt Dixie over there. Nothing more happened in China today.

In the Central Pacific and not only...
We are strenghtening our defenses in Palmyra, Christmas Island, Johnston and Midway.
So it is quiet as hell...

I hope you have plans in the works to place at least a small BF at the dot base (Portland Roads) before he captures PM. It will become a very important base once PM falls. If you can spare them, send some large American fleet subs there to start your evac over to PR from PM. At least get a frag out now before he takes PM and pushes those LCU into the interior and it takes 30 or more days to get them back to the coast for evac.

Thanks NY!
A very good point... I was thinking
1) To start the evac and by the means of eveacuated BF do the installment on PR
2) Send the BF that is currently sailing to PM to PR
Suggestions

In my PBEM game (CHS 158c - Nik Mod) now near the end of 11/42, my opponent said that taking PM has been a problem as he can only afford to send barges to reinforce it with Cooktown basing my 4e bombers (he didn't like them getting by over 50 Zero's to drop bombs on KB even if they missed) along with the American A-29 Hudsons and PR having B-25 Mitchells and P-38F Lightnings flying at normal range to hit it whenever I want.   I eventually, built up Thursday Island and they have the potential to wreck havoc when the time comes on NG.

Portland Road can easily be overlooked by both sides if your not familar with Andrew's map (it is only a dot base afterall ). Dixie will be well aware of it after this game is done.

Some nice tips as usuall from you NY

It is obvious from my point of view that Dixie is trying to cut off OZ...
He has some places to consider:
1) Fiji can be a great target since it is quite far away...
2) He can try to make the attack a bit closer for example Canton or Palmyra... even Johnson but I doubt it since despite the closeness of his bases the mentioned bases are near PH...
I also think that Dixie is going to use KB to back up the landing... wherever and if he is going to land. I am not going to interfere much, well maybe if it's really near PH so that I can bring some LBs into action. I am not going to risk loosing CVs to defend Fiji for example...

From my limited persepctive, your defenses need to be first - the Line Islands (Palmyra, Christmas Island) and Johnson Island, and Midway (BF, CD, and 1 RCT max). Midway is nice, but not a strategic asset.

Second, make a play for Suva and Pago Pago island groups. These are nice to have, but not vital and worth the lose of any CVs to defend. I would send some large fleet subs (2 subs per LCU) there to evac a fragment back to USA, if needed for rebuilding, especially BFs. French Polynesia is a good fall back position and it enables you to keep a supply line to Nz/Oz open.

Operate all the American CVs in one large group (each in a single CV TF). Even if you don't use it, the potential is there and force him to use KB in the Central and South Pacific to support invasions. I've lost 5 American CVs to 1 Japanese, to date in various PBEMs. All because I have not followed my own advise (I didn't have it to start with, but do now).

That's precisely what I am doing.

I agree. They are handy but not really worth loosing any ships. We shall see if Dixie is going to attack here. If he does as you said.. French Polynesia here I come

Consider sending some of your TKs to Tongatapu (for the brave) or Rarotonga (for the more cautious) and unloading there. You will lose some in spoilage, but it is far enough away that he probably will not send subs down there to watch the place.  Then, if, the Line Islands calm down and you feel secure, send your 4 CVs here, refuel and then move up towards Suva/Pago Pago and wait for an opportunity to strike at an invasion fleet that may come without KB. I put a PBY on each Suva and Pago Pago to watch

Many Japanese will use subs around Suva and Pago Pago area, but not this far south initially. A good place to wait in ambush.

Hi NY,
Indeed Pago Pago is a nice place for an ambush However in some PMs concerning the war Dixie was very upset with the lack of the Navy as he called it... I wouldn't be surprised if he's preparing a small trap somewhere with the Invasion fleet as a bait

Mike
here is the HK situation that you requested...

Yava, I'm 2 game weeks behind you, still at 12/23/41, and my supply total is down to about the same as yours. I guess Mynok has been bombarding a little more than Dixie. I think it also shows the value of pinning down some of the Alien.... er, Japanese... units in Canton. Your efforts there have bought Hong Kong at least 2 weeks of additional freedom.
