Not getting into the history/politics discourse--but as far as tactics....

Back in the early 90's whn I was stationed at Bragg---we had a gent come to our brigade that had joined the Army & stated he was former brit citizen/para. Stated he had been and infantryman/bagpiper for his regt and was at the Falklands. Question for any of the Britts out there----Do the para/regt's still do this? As far as after getting in the area, forming up, and starting the slog, --are their still pipers in certain situations other then ceremonial?? (meaning-jumping in, assembl'g, then starting the march to the pipes)

As a side note---got to have some contact with some British paras back then who had come to Bragg for exchange training----Came across as very serious, professional & a unit I wouldn't want to mess with. Now the Aussie paras---some wild partiers-at least the few I met.

Have you read "Green Eyed Boys" (Re 3 Para at Mt Longdon)

I doubt that there would be very many infantry formations in the world capable of winning that battle - with little artillery/air support and no tanks - it was pure guts and fighting ability.

Certainly. Like some right radicals on this thread. When a British colonial possesion become unprofitable for them they leave. Look at this history. Then put 1 and 1 together and tell me what you think the final chapter is going to read on the Malvinas.

Well you right about this. Invading soverign territory is bad, as is invading another countrys airspace. Bad...very bad...an unjust thing. That's why the Brits need to take their Tornados back to to the UK where they belong and out of our airspace.

quote:

Now this is something good. I want to try to clear up a situation between the Brits about the fighting in 82ī

When the British were unloading their troops and we bombed them the 1st day many of the bombs didnīt explode. This was reported on the BBC. The next day Argentina bombed again and all the bombs exploded I think. The British were angry because they believed/believe Argentina heard the original BBC broadcast and changed the bomb fuses.

This is not true and the people from that Squadron that did the bombing will tell you it's not true.

Many of these people are still alive and some of
them active on Argentine forums. They give out their
e-mails to some and speak. Offer their insight and so on. So just to clear that up for my British friends about bombs and the BBC. The BBC broadcast had no bearing on bombs exploding when you were unloading.

One of those people from that group kept a diary as the war went on and I have translated his entry on the Belgrano sinking. It is here...

02-MAY-82: A BLACK DAY FOR OUR COUNTRY, THE PIRATES HIT US HARD

No one is happy and no one knows what the effect will
be with the first successful attack going to the English fleet. We have heard the news that an English submarine, the Conqueror, torpedoed with MK8
torpedoes the cruiser Belgrano and caused terrible
damage. In half an hour she sunk.

This attack happened outside the 200 nautical mile
exclusion zone-we protested to the OAS (Organization of American States) that the British were not respecting this zone. The number of lives lost was 323 Argentine sailors.

This type of news makes us think about the seriousness of the war, of the pirates and how we feel about the English. Definetely gone are our thoughts and wishes for a diplomatic solution.

Smart people can also make stupid mistakes - just look at the McCanns (if their story is true) leaving their three children alone in a house while they go out for dinner. Sympathetic sure (again if their story is true) but sympathy only goes so far.

Whether the Argentinians heard it or not doesn't matter. What does matter is that giving out information that can be helpful to the enemy in a time of war can and does get your people killed and is treason.

I think you will find that you're chaps need to take their 'planes out of our airspace. As the Falklands are internationally recognised as British sovereign territory the airspace above them is ours too.
Unless you are implying that the Tornadoes are flying over Buenos Aires from the islands?

As for the Belgrano sinking, there is no point persisting with the arguement that it is some kind of war crime.

I've never ever ever heard of somebody complaining that their warship was sunk by the enemy and calling them cheaters. That 'exclusion zone' stuff was a load of bollocks to begin with.

Hell, the Argentinians sunk a british cargo ship outside of the 'exclusion zone' but I don't hear any British complaining about it or calling it a warcrime.

Well...seeing as it's not heading back on topic anytime soon....

When I was in the Falklands in 1985, there was a guy there from Buckie, in Scotland called, erm.....Buckie. He took me down Stanley one evening for a few jars of the old amber nectar (I cannot for the life of me remember what Penguin Beer tasted like...suffice it to say it wasn't very appealing to the taste buds.)

Anyway, we were going down Stanley. There were 3 pubs in Stanley (I think only 3) and I cannot remember the names of them. But there was a big hill in Stanley going down to the jetty and half way (or so) down this hill was one of the pubs. The second (Penguin Arms??) was at the bottom of the hill on the right and the third was...somewhere.

anyway, we got to the top of the hill and the road was covered in ice. I was like "I aint going down there". Well, it was Buckies second tour...and he had a novel way of getting down to the pub. He said "Squat down and slide, as you get near, just grab hold of the fence and you'll swing in". Well I was like "Go on then, hero"....so he did.

I've never seen anything so elegant. Clearly he had practiced this maneuver. Now, being as I had had a few sherberts before, I wasn't thinking "Yeah, but he's practiced that!....I was thinking "Hey...that's easy peasy lemon squeezy"....so off I go.

Except I was nowhere near the fence...and not getting any closer...I ended up I clipped a boulder of somesort and went crashing into someones fence....well past the pub. Did untold damage to the fence and knocked a tooth out.

Very dangerous place, The Falklands

So spare me the morality lecture mate.

How many Germans died before they were freed from the stranglehold of a military dictatorship they had allowed to take them over?

How many Japanese died before they were freed from the stranglehold of a military oligarchy they had allowed to take them over?

I never cease to be amazed by how thoroughly clueless people who play military strategy games can actual be about military strategy.

It is understandable for the average non-military history oriented village idiot walking the streets to be clueless regarding military strategy. For the same to be said about people who profess an interest in, and a knowledge of military strategy to be just as cluless is just plain sad.

"Freeing" the Iraqis and dealing with the "threat" of WMDs were never, NEVER anything more than pretexts for a necessary military strategy. Anyone with more than three functional brain cells and even the most rudimentary knowledge of military strategy knows this to be self evident. The constant "moralizing" of those who bear grudges against, or suffer from envy of, the United States of America attempting to "rub our noses" in the inherent untruth behind those publicly professed "reasons" for the invasion only succeed in casting a spotlight on their own gullibility and lack of understanding.

This sort of bully-boy, Argie behaviour drove more and more penguins to join the resistance. Also, the vast majority of penguins practised passive resistance by pretending not to understand instructions, going fishing instead of building fortifications and causing several nasty sprains by crapping all over the rocks to make them slippery.

Cheers, Neilster

BTW Dixie the last comment on that page is in english and says....

ĻThe propaganda of English is still worse than that of the Argentinian Generals of the time. Everyone knows now that the Invincible had been seriously struck.Ļ

And here is a modern video of some of the ĻchimpanzeesĻ training you boys are up against with the largest airforce south of Texas in this ongoing conflict.

Hmmm...maybe it was some of these ĻchimpanzeesĻ who overflew the Malvinas (british admitted) last year that you Brits couldnīt catch in your Tornados.

Ok, just watched that video. Pretty decent. Maybe you could loan it to the RCAF for recruiting purposes? ( for any who may wonder, I haven't seen a REAL recruiting ad in a long time. But hey, it IS Canada we talking about)
Still, gotta wonder, pretty old jets there...Whatever happened to your Mirage 2000s?
