Hi All,

Distance Simulations has a e-mail / web based game on the Civil War called "Civil War Online" that I passed by Gil and he said to post it. You might find it interesting. I have not yet played, I just applied to the academy which everyone goes through to learn the interface.

Here is the link http://www.distance-simulations.com/

Jeff

(It seems to be a non-profit effort that doesn't compete with any Matrix products, so it seemed fine to let everyone know about it.)

WHat I want is a WWII Online like game of the Civil War in 3D where we can play as individual soldiers and man cannons, or be in the cavalary or ironclad, etc. Now talk about getting your reinactors to play a game I think that would go over the top since there's a lot more that reinact the civil war battles than WWII ones. ;)

Absolutely Ravenhood! As a WWII Online fanatic, I'd definately play something like that set in the Civil War era

Yes I think so too! A mixture between a grand strategy game where you deal with the resource management, political stuff and economy plus a detailed tactical combat sim (for example like they did with Take Command or a better grafic like in the upcoming Napoleon game done by battlefront and there the posibility to be able to join the fight as one of the soldiers on the field) - guess that would be the greatest of games ever ;) - (I hope it's OK for the site admins to mention those games - no offence meant here!).

BTW roeddog & ravinhood there IS a possibility to do just what you dream about: with the Civil War Mod for "Operation Flashpoint" ;) post here or PM me if oyu like more infos

Sorry to be a cynic but you could never have a WWIIOL type Civil War experience for the very same reasons you can't have a true WWII experience in WWIIOL.  You can model weapons to a great degree with all the physics in the world but you'll never get enough people together employing periodic tactics to get a true feel of the time.   Not at least without being surrounded by a ton of AI...

I bet some grumpy old man said the same thing about re-enacting the civil war battles. "You'll never get enough people interested in something like that and most especially get them to come from all over to one specific spot"....or the one about going to the moon "Man will never fly to the Moon" lol. If everyone in the world thought like you Joram you just might be right, but, thankfully they don't and a WWII online Civil War game would go over big with re-enactors. ;) It's like I said, there's a lot more people interested in re-enacting the civil war than there are those re-enacting WWII. The problem with WWII online is it's too EXPENSIVE. Make a game you buy ONCE and then the online play is FREE like "Guild Wars" is now. They have sold 4 million copies of the game and don't charge a dime for online play. If WWII online didn't have a monthly fee I'd play it and I bet a million other people would as well. And if they made a Civil War game like it and there was no monthly fee I'd play that as well. ;)

I disagree because WW2 has a much much broader appeal than the Civil War.  Perhaps not in the US but across Europe & Asia I'd say the AACW is just a minor blip.  So my point is that if WW2 can't do it, then neither can the American Civil War.  I'd be happy to be wrong but I just don't see it happening.  :)  The other point against a true Civil War experience is that people tend to cooperate better using the small unit tactics employed by most during WW2.  In the Civil War, I think you'd be hardpressed finding a bunch of people trying to maneuver and fire in line!

Not saying that a Civil War game ala WW2OL couldn't be fun, but being fun is far different from being immersive and realistic as WW2OL proves.

I've played WW2online, and I think the Civil War one could work.  There would have to be changes, of course, but it might be something you'd be surprised on.  I think it would be so unique and forward thinking, you'd have an influx of people playing.  The price per month is the major limiting factor for people, imo.

Maybe if you could sell it for possibly $85 for the whole game and then free online play, that might be better.  But you have to have some kind of revenue stream to keep patching it.  Having people learn to wheel and charge in unison would be part of the fun.  It was hard to get people to do it in WW2online as well, but that was so massive, that you had little pockets everywhere fighting so it was easy to slip in as a lone wolf and not work with the overall strat.  With the way the ACW was, it would be hard pressed to fight the way people fight in WW2online.  I think people would quickly realize you need to be part of an army moving around and then possible on off nights, there would be the kind of raids that take place in FoF.

It would be a smash.

I thought of this as an online game and someone may steal my idea but I doubt I'll ever market it since I don't know how to program but... I always thought an online game that simulated sub warfare in the pacific during WW2 would be a great game that people would enjoy.
