interesting sigint. Doubt that Saipan has that many troops but it seems the enemy is already building up places like Guam which is thousands of miles behind the front line... and I guess all front line bases have lots of Japanese AA btn and rgt...

Sub attack at 4,103

Japanese Ships
SS I-32, hits 2

Allied Ships
MSW Lismore, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Eland Dubois
MSW Latrobe

looks like it was a dumb idea to send out three MSW from Perth to hunt the spotted sub. The sub kills Lismore and RADM Lake goes down with the ship... one real hit and a near miss in return... not the first admiral Iīve lost...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 42 encounters mine field at Rangoon (29,34)

Japanese Ships
PG Kaiun Maru
PG Toyotsu Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire
PG Kanko Maru

and a sub laid mines at Rangoon hits a PG. I have no idea why Hortlund isnīt even trying to do something against my mines. The two Dutch mine layer subs are by far the most dangerous subs so far...

unfortunately Hortlund has figured out that the three units that were left behind from our former stack to Akyab have no flak cover... the follow unit order has sent them one hex North instead of going with our stack South to Akyab... great eh?? now they will get bombed for at least a month I fear...

I clicked on auto select commander and when the MSW sunk I saw that RADM Lake was assigned as TF commander...

nearly 400 fighters and fighter bombers on training runs in India today... excellent... we will need the pilots with around 80 exp. as our enemy will get the next generation IJA fighters in late 42 which is at least as good as our Warhawks. So it will again all come down to pilot quality...

Yesterday already we have spotted several TFs going towards Akyab. This is either a supply convoy or another reinforcement convoy. Although with the high fort levels and the wooden hex, Hortlund could easily hold the base with half the troops he has there at the moment.

I wonīt send out my bombers as there have been several CVs identified and I guess this is KB again. Perhaps some of his ships will hit a sub laid mine at Akyab, canīt hope for more...

Hortlund told me I was really lucky this turn. Well after looking at the turn I donīt know who was lucky. Looks like itīs always a matter of oppinion... so letīs see...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/28/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 20 encounters mine field at Akyab (30,29)

Japanese Ships
DD Asagiri, Mine hits 1, on fire
DD Tokitsukaze
CL Kiso, Mine hits 1

His TF (probably surface combat as cover for the transports) comes in and two ships hit VH2 mines. Non are heavily damaged though. Well, perhaps here we are lucky, but he could have cleared those mines long ago, or at least BEFORE he moves in with dozens of ships.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 170 encounters mine field at Victoria Point (25,39)

Japanese Ships
DD Amatsukaze

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Chandpur, at 30,25

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Wellington III: 4 destroyed
A-20B Boston: 2 destroyed
SB-2c: 2 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Aoba
CA Mogami
CA Ashigara
CA Nachi

Allied ground losses:
1481 casualties reported
Guns lost 20
Vehicles lost 5

Airbase hits 23
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 127
Port fuel hits 1

then, to our surprise, he bombards Chandpur, for whatever reason. Lucky? Well, IMO he was lucky. Because a) he totally nuked the base with 4 CAs even though we had level 9 forts (once again this shows that forts help nothing against naval bombardments when the detection level is high enough) and b) my 2x9,2 inch and 18x6 inch guns didnīt fire a single shot. So who was lucky here?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Akyab at 30,29

Japanese Ships
CA Nachi
DD Shikinami
DD Murakumo
DD Yugure
DD Wakaba
CA Mogami

Allied Ships
SS O20

oh wow!! We stay on the lucky side! O20 fired a salvo of four torps at Nachi and missed... thank god that we are so lucky... Zynic mode off...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 171 encounters mine field at Akyab (30,29)

Japanese Ships
MSW Hanata Maru #6
MSW Banshu Maru #51
AK Nishi Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire
DD Yudachi

an AK hits another VH2... what a pity those VH2 mines are the weakest ones...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chandpur , at 30,25

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 8
D3A Val x 22
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 23
Ki-30 Ann x 53

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 3 destroyed, 16 damaged
Ki-30 Ann: 8 destroyed, 36 damaged

Allied Ships
MSW Maryborough, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Baroda, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Cuttack, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Port hits 7

Aircraft Attacking:
27 x Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet

unbelievable for me, but true, Hortlund then sends in DIVE bombers from Akyab. I have yet to figure out why he attacks Chandpur! At this point I had to think if he wants to land troops there. Iīve got three damaged MSW and not even 40 aircraft there so why does he attack Chandpur?

and now the hammer! After asking Steve why he thinks that I was lucky, he told me that he had set 400 more bombers (must be KB and LBA) to attack Chandpur but they didnīt take off!

Why on earth am I the lucky one then??

It would have been a pleasure for me to see KBīs bombers and LBA attacking Chandpur and if there would have been really 400 bombers then 50 would have been shot down with more than 100 probably damaged. But BAD LUCK for us, they didnīt launch. All that was at Chandpur was destroyed or damaged, so those 400 bombers more would perhaps have destroyed a dozen aircraft more but would have really suffered in return. After explaining this to my opponent, he told me that he thought I would have had far more at Chandpur. I guess he then thought different about who really had luck this turn...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chandpur , at 30,25

Japanese aircraft
Ki-15 Babs x 1

No Japanese losses

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Benares , at 28,18

P-40E Warhawk x 43
Hurricane IIc x 16

No Allied losses

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 11

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

we just let the enemy do what he wants to do in Burma at the moment, sending in our aircraft doesnīt make sense yet and while a big part of the IJN is cruising just 250 miles off the coast of India, our aircraft are doing training raids against the remnants of the failed invasion...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kai Island , at 39,78

Japanese aircraft

looks like we canīt get rid of those 0,0,0 units... the biggest joke is that those units still can create ZOCs and move around even though there are no troops...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 3460 troops, 132 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1712

Here are todayīs air losses. Imagine how many more Japanese aircraft (and pilots) would have been lost over Akyab if there would have been 400 bombers more attacking...

He was trying to give your base a 1-2 punch combo. AA defenses can be degraded if their disruption level is high enough. A port bombardment is a great way to acomplish that. If air attacks go in on the same turn after a successful bombardment that disrupts your AA and base units, the losses/damage can be far less. (though utilizing dive bombers is still not advised due to the hard code issue)

apparantly not all the planned bombers attacked.

(though utilizing dive bombers is still not advised due to the hard code issue)

apparantly not all the planned bombers attacked.

yeah, I was aware of that fact. Thatīs what Iīve done also in this game already. But still when I looked at my units at the base (and at the flak fire they put up against the one attack that went in) Iīm sure he would have lost far more aircraft than I would have (there were only a dozen left at my base ). And Iīm sure I would have taken down more than a dozen attacking bombers, especially if he would have attacked with KBīs Vals. So IMO he was very lucky that his aircraft refused to attack - they could take off, they had excellent weather in the afternoon.

my 2x9,2 inch and 18x6 inch guns didnīt fire a single shot. So who was lucky here?

check the ratings on the leader of the unit that includes the 9.2s...if possible replace with a combat unit commander who has a LAND rating in the upper 50s or better and a reasonably high aggression (over 50)...the LAND rating appears to be more important...those 9.2s can really ruin a cruiser captains day once they start shooting

we have a good number of high exp Level bombers in India that are flying constant naval search as thereīs nothing else they could do now and nearly every turn we achieve hits, mostly on AKs, PC or MSW. We sunk quite some ships this way already. Especially the Coronados with their bombload of 10x500lb bombs prove to be very effective when they are flown by high exp. pilots.

Just found out in my CHS PBEM game that the Beaufighter VIC makes a very good barge buster - multiple cannons, range 7/9, and carries both 250 and 500 lb.   You might want to place those around bases he is sending barges into. Since I have PDU on, some of my useless Wirraways can upgrade to them vs. waiting for the Kittyhakws IIIs.

My Wirraways have all gone the way to Hurricane IIB but I donīt have Beaufighters at the moment. Only a night fighter variant of which I have 12 aircraft on the whole map. Those barges have been sitting at Gili Gili doing nothing for weeks already with a couple being sunk by search aircraft. Unfortunately those 100ft attacks often cause the synch bug and as we have been hit by this damned bug already a couple of times I wonīt do 100ft attacks if it isnīt a must. Normally I really like those low attacks with Beaufighters or well armed 2E bombers as they have also a good chance to avoid CAP but like Iīve said, the synch bug is too much of a risk for me.

Recon planes have to fly at much more realistic heights in Nikmod....otherwise the losses mount up fast.

6000 feet is not a good idea.

donīt tell that Hortlund! My recons, like the F5 I have in use now are flying at 40.000ft and take minimal losses. Perhaps 1 plane lost out of 100 missions. Too high for flak and too high for fighters. And they still seem to be able to achieve reasonable results as they even spot subs and small ships from that height (which seems strange though)...

If he's paying attention to losses on the intel screen, he may notice but alot of players miss it.

Flying higher does reduce the speed (in terms of # of turns) in which Detection Levels rise over a target base but they'll still get the job done ultimately.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 27,32

CL Nagara, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Hayate
DD Matsukaze
DD Yuzuki
DD Nagatsuki
DD Ayanami
DD Hatsuharu
DD Suzukaze

Allied Ships
SS O24

O24 scores again... we had to watch the sacrifice of our bombers but at least we were able to hit a CL. Would be nice to see two torp hits at some point as one wonīt do much and itīs only 5 hexes to Rangoon...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 73134 troops, 902 guns, 29 vehicles, Assault Value = 1871

Defending force 100737 troops, 943 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 1715

Allied ground losses:
676 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

10/10/42 and the Japanese forces use a tactical nuclear weapon for the first time in the war... out of a sudden my losses due to Japanese bombardments explode... my leading HQ unit is already down to 23/96... what a wonderful idea to march to Akyab... I should just turn back as this can be a stalemate that lasts for over a year...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Trimcomalee

we still have to fight it out with the CD of Dutch Harbor. Pennsylvania lost two mounts of her secondary armament today... we have yet to achieve a single hit on the port or airfield... doing those attacks now every couple of days, something Hortlund showed us. Iīm not really a fan of those unlimited BB bombardments but my opponent didnīt want to limit them so here we go. We have an AE at Unmak Island one hex away so we can do bombardments every second day if needed...

not a single fighter over Lautern the last days so we sent in the bombers to force the Japanese to fly Cap here instead of doing training from New Guinea. 5 bombers were lost (3 to flak). We are operating nearly at the max height of the B-25 which would be 21.200ft. Still, Iīm satisfied with the hits on the base. 3 of those attacks and the base would be closed...
