Re Dutch harbour,

Just a thought, maybe your damage to BB's is because they only have 2 targets. Now they are down to 10 guns is it worth allowing escorts to fire.

(Always free with advice when they aren't my ships)

I´m always trying to do it the safe way, so no escorts are allowed to bombard. There are still mines at Dutch Harbor also. Looks like I can do those bombardments daily when the ships can replenish at Unmak Island. And it seems we have already achieved our goal: the flak has been silenced!

this is how one of my HQ units looks like already... result from Japanese bombardments only...

What I really wonder is, why is Adolf Hitler on the picture of an Allied HQ unit?? Or who is the second guy from the left. Looks like Hitler to me...

In the last three days, 4 of my subs were hit by land based aircraft. 3 by Helens and one by a Val. Of those 4 subs, 2 are 90% sure write offs, 1 has a 50/50 chance and 1 will surely make it. Now if I would have 100 subs within LBA range... at the moment I have 15 subs in range of LBA (means 8 hexes from within level 3 bases) and I lost 4 out of 15 subs in 3 days. It´s so easy to clear the whole map of subs... needless to say that I really care about my subs and move them...

today I should receive the second BG equipped with B-24D. Guess what! Again they showed up with LB-30... Compared with the B-24 the LB-30 is just a crappy model. I have one BG with the LB-30 in use on the map and have 100+ in the pools now... But now I´m short of 96 B-24D which I should now have on map, means 10 weeks of B-24D replacements. Which means also that my plans are moved again 2 months+ further back... great...

finally we get an attack on a TF in the Timor area. Hortlund has a Cap of around 100 fighters at Lautern but he would have been better off setting his fighters to LRCAP this TF. The TF finished unloading at Lautern and ended up one hex North of Lautern when my bombers attacked at 7 hexes from Darwin. No leaking Cap either. We keep on working on the Japanese AP shortage! I guess 3 of the ships hit will surely sink... all hits were 500lb GP bombs... in the afternoon the rest of the convoy was saved as Darwin saw once again a thunderstorm...

there is not a single fighter in all Northern Burma! And it seems there isn´t a single bomber in whole Burma at the moment, so I guess all those bombers are further South bombing my subs... We used this opportunity for an attack on Akyab. Perhaps if we´re doing a couple of attacks that this forces the IJA back into Burma. But I can´t see that we would really hurt Akyab. 4 Wellingtons lost, including 2 pilots... we can´t go higher as we´re operating our bombers at max height already... 3 AA rgt at Akyab and severa base forces...

as I´m not doing a lot, my opponent should have enough time to plan his turns carefully! He didn´t and suffered... This is one hex North of Lautern! And what you see here is only leaking Cap. While there are a hundred fighters flying Cap over Lautern! That´s fine with me, but there´s also the possibility in the game to fly LRCAP!!

4 Mitchells are lost A2A and 1 to ops. 40 Mitchells are shown as damaged but this must be FOW this time. My squadrons are still in excellent shape and stay on nav attack. Surprise for my opponent will be 4 DDs going in to Lautern (probably all hitting a mine ) to attack this supply convoy - or what´s left. We hopefully force it out of the hex so that our bombers can go in again... all merchants are small AKs...

the day was more quiet than I had thought... the supply convoy we attacked yesterday did not go to Lautern, it was spotted heading North, which means it turned around. Our DD squadron that was sent to Lautern found nothing... expect the convoy to return as soon as Hortlund checked that it was heading home...

I can´t figure out why Hortlund´s ASW TFs are so effective. He must get some very good die rolls. It seems that most of the times we encounter one of those TFs a sub is either sunk or heavily damaged... my exp is normally different as normally the ASW TFs achieve most times nothing... 2 real hits and 12 near misses... retiring with 30 sys and 60 float, so we even were lucky that the sub didn´t immediately sink...

same here, no problems for the patrol crafts to locate my sub... 1 real hit, 3 near misses... Hortlund is increasing his bombers on sub search again. I guess whenever he spots one or two subs in an area he flies in 100 bombers and sends them out to hunt my subs. Today 5 out of 6 subs in an area around Borneo were spotted... 5 out of 6... It´s great... moving them doesn´t help, they are spotted again tomorrow... damage is at 12 sys and 34 flt...

disastrous turn...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/28/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1014 encounters mine field at Thursday Island (49,90)

Allied Ships
DD Downes, Mine hits 1, on fire
CL Raleigh, Mine hits 1, on fire

of course our surface combat TF hits mines (2 out of three ships)... a mine field that was already spotted long ago... I haven´t seen this sh*t since I deleted UV from my hard drive... but in this campaign we saw 100+ mine hits already... the mine, the all dominating weapon in this PBEM...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Thursday Island at 49,90

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
OS2U-3 Kingfisher: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Takao, Shell hits 1
CA Haguro
CA Mikuma, Shell hits 1
CA Suzuya, Shell hits 3
DD Takanami, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Naganami
DD Kagero
DD Hatsukaze
DD Tanikaze
DD Oshio
AK Kazuura Maru
AK Kurama Maru
AK Olympia Maru

Allied Ships
CL Raleigh, Shell hits 11, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Cassin, Shell hits 8, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Downes, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

what the hell????? Damn my search planes! This TF was spotted a couple of turns ago when it went round Gili Gili heading to Port Moresby. Everytime I got recon about a couple of AKs. Not a single time anything else, so I sent in my raiders... I have no idea how 60+ search aircraft can not identify this TF accordingly... we surprise the enemy TF but the Allied ship launched torpedoes are hardcoded that only 2% can hit targets... then, not surprisingly either, the combat once again lasts as long as it takes to completely sink my TF... wonder why the battles are over in two seconds when a couple of my destroyers attack two unescorted merchants... someone told me it´s a conspiracy...

CL Raleigh was sunk in an encounter with superior Japanese naval forces. Something that could have been avoided if our search plane crews wouldn´t be complete amateurs. And I´m the Allied commander, I can´t even execute them...

USS Raleigh (CL-7), 1924-1946

USS Raleigh, a 7,050-ton Omaha class light cruiser, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts. Commissioned in February 1924, she made a maiden cruise to Northern Europe in mid-year. After four years of operations with the Scouting Fleet in the Atlantic, Pacific and Caribbean, Raleigh returned to European waters in September 1928 for a year-long tour as the U.S. Navy's flagship there. Further Scouting Force service in 1929-36 followed, with the ship shifting her base to San Diego, California, in 1933. In 1936-38, Raleigh was flagship of Squadron 40-T, which operated off Spain during that nation's bloody civil war. She spent the rest of the 1930s and the early 1940s off the U.S. and in the Hawaiian area, taking an active part in the U.S. Fleet's exercises.

On 7 December 1941, Raleigh was moored at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese Navy raided that fleet base. She was badly damaged when hit by a torpedo and near-missed by a bomb. Repaired at the Pearl Harbor and Mare Island Navy Yards, the cruiser was again ready for service in mid-1942. Raleigh operated in the south and central Pacific for most of the rest of that year, then was sent to the Aleutians, where she was employed until June 1945. Her activities there included convoy escort, patrols in contested waters and bombardment of Japanese-held islands. Sent back to the Atlantic during the Summer of 1945, Raleigh briefly helped to train Naval Academy midshipmen. She was decommissioned in November 1945 and sold for scrapping in February 1946.

this TF was the main reason to send our DDs. Again combat lasts max 10sec... we don´t see the combats that last as long as it takes to take out the enemy TFs even if they can´t compete with our forces... at least one PC was sunk due to a lucky torp hit that probably surprised the small vessel...

Hortlund and I have started (better say he started ) a discussion about my pilot training programme. I guess he´s not "happy" about it. As I have my own house rule of not bombing HI, oil, ressources or manpower of Japanese occupied Allied territory he thinks it would be strange to bomb those two Indian airfields now that he took with his mini paradrops. Obviously it didn´t take long to "piss him off" about that. Well, I already told him the day when he dropped his mini para units into every empty base in India thousands of miles behind the front line that he will 100% regret it that he has done that. I guess every Japanese commander would be happy about a hr like that (that I never proposed, it´s just one that I follow in every game of mine), but Hortlund now uses my hr against me, saying that I shouldn´t bomb those Indian airfields...

Now if it would make him feel better I would just put up the first 200 4E bombers I have and destroy all ressources of Kendari within two attacks for the loss of 10 bombers against 50 Japanese fighters. I won´t do that because I have my own hr about it AND because then I would here the crying about his inability to take down 75 4Es with 50 Oscars on Cap...

Besides that, the Japanese are doing training runs as well (and I don´t have a problem with that at all - I think games with this kind of training are better than without it!!!), so why should I not be allowed to do it? The fact that he provided me with 100% save training grounds is 100% his fault and I told him that the day he landed para units consisting of 50-100 men. What did he do? He continued his attacks with mini units, now he has to live with the consequences I guess!

While he thinks it´s okay (or better say he just likes it) that Zeroes are taking down my best fighters (means P-40 and Spitfires) in kill rates of min 5:1 (which went up to 15:0 during the encounter with my Spits), I think that this is NOT okay at this date (not even in early 42) and the only way to counter that is to have equally skilled pilots. The only way to get them is to do this onmap training. At the moment there are 300 Japanese fighters doing training runs on Kai Island (and those are more experienced than my pilots BEFORE they started their training). Like I´ve said, I take on average 5 or 6 aircraft lost to ops daily from those training raids so it isn´t free at all - between 150 and 180 aircraft lost a month!! He told me that his Tojos are going online now, so why should I fight 300 monthly Tojos with pilots in the 80s with 50 P-40 and 25 Spitfire Vb with pilots in the 50s??? Those P-40 and Spits were helpless with their pilots against Zeros, why should I send them against far better Tojos??

We will see where this game will head when I start my air offensive and my pilots will be equally skilled. I guess we could run into problems as soon as my fighters start achieving kill rates in their favour...

For the moment, I will continue my training programme and all that is a problem at the moment are our stacking limits, as my airfields are full and I can´t send all my fighters on training runs...

Well, after discussing ten minutes more and after being told that it´s absolutely STUPID from me to bomb empty bases in India (firstly they aren´t empty, secondly the Japanese did that all the time already before I started it ), we have agreed on NO further pilot training for both sides!

IMO this will result in the game being stopped by the Japanese (due to a broken mod, game, engine, design or whatever) when my airforce will achieve 10:1+ kill rates from 6/43 on until the rest of the war. Well, at the moment I really think it has to be like that and I won´t really regret it. Too many different views are within this PBEM. I really apreciate Hortlund as my opponent and he´s very reliable but I really have to say that at some point I find it more than strange that EVERYTHING that favours him is okay as long as I´m not doing the same. From that point on it`s stupid behaviour, or gamey, (from my side of course). Before that, there´s no problem...

We had and will have endless discussions. It´s just the same with the naval attacks. He thinks it´s okay that he can drop thousands of torpedoes with Betties but it´s an absolute game breaker that I can set 112 B-17s to naval attack that then can´t hurt a Japanese CA with 500lb bombs. He think´s it´s okay that all his Betties drop torps 99% of the time because the Betty was a torp bomber... well, what can I say more? He thinks that the mod crippled the Japanese side, even though he produces 500 fighters a month in mid 42. He thinks it´s okay that the best Allied fighters on the map with the best pilots flying them should lose 1:5 + against his fighters. He thinks it´s okay that he bombs an empty airfield for training but as soon as I start doing the same (against airfields that are NOT empty) it´s stupid to do that...

Oh well, once and for all: NO MORE ON MAP TRAINING FOR BOTH SIDES!!! Let´s hope he will be tough enough to watch the combat replays in mid 43...

It would take another month (in game time) and he would say that it´s stupid to do that. I have no problem if he thinks it´s better to stop all training. This will lead to him collapsing in mid 43 and IMO to the end of this PBEM - if it doesn´t end due to other different oppions before...

For now, I will send a tk rgt to take the bases back and won´t do any training runs anymore. Then we will start to grind down his pool and from that point on watch what his pilots in the 30s can do against mine in the 50s...

again, discussing a bit further we have now agreed on:

no fighters on airfield/port/ground attack at any time. No attacks of any aircraft on empty bases. No attacks of any aircraft that are obviously training raids - like mine in India!

attacking cut off bases or bases under siege (to keep them supressed, to attack the LCUs, to burn their supplies,...) is allowed for every aircraft, except fighters.
