I had to pay 2600 political points for a CV and 2 DDs to be withdrawn. I paid them and guess what I should send this month: 1 CV and 2 DDs! This really sucks. The only type of ship I will never withdraw is a CV... and now I should have withdrawn two within two months... Churchill has gone nuts... at the moment I´m down to minus 1900 pp and at the end of the month it will be about -400 so with the next withdrawel I will be down to -3000 pp!!!! This means two full months of pp...

again, discussing a bit further we have now agreed on:

no fighters on airfield/port/ground attack at any time.

What about fighter-bombers?

fighter bombers can attack whatever they want. Of course not the obvious training run (like the ones in India) and no attacks on empty targets.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/03/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Hanoi , at 36,37

Allied aircraft
F-5A Lightning x 3
LB-30 Liberator x 55

Allied aircraft losses
LB-30 Liberator: 3 damaged

Resources hits 14

Aircraft Attacking:
27 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

of course half of my strike failed to locate the target. Still, we achieve some hits. Should force Hortlund to keep fighters at this big HI/ressource site! 14 resource hits result in 64 resources destroyed (out of 600). Not bad considering this was only half of what we could have sent... this turn already had an aircraft symbol at Hanoi! Everything that is below 40 fighters on Cap will sooner or later see another attack of my bombers as I want to force him to keep at least two full Sentais of fighters there...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Dutch Harbor , at 103,36

Allied aircraft
SBD Dauntless x 32

No Allied losses

Port hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Shuzan Naval Guard Unit, at 103,36

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 44

No Allied losses

Aircraft Attacking:
44 x P-39D Airacobra bombing at 2000 feet

we will soon land an RCT there but it seems impossible to cause casualties within the defenders...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Lautem at 33,78

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 63
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 41
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 5

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 62

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3 Zero: 24 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 7 destroyed, 48 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo, Bomb hits 1
BB Ise, Bomb hits 1
CA Nachi

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 16000 feet

what the hell? We wanted to attack Amboina with all our B-17s in the afternoon, so we set our bombers to naval attack/airfield attack and stood down ALL our search aircraft not to trigger a naval attack. There isn´t a sub at Lautern so I have no clue why we flew this naval attack but it ended in a disaster. Looks like his fighters can take down my bombers, even though Hortlund doesn´t think so. Obviously a disaster for me with 10 B-17s lost A2A, more than 2 weeks´ replacements... 16% lost and 50% of my BGs out of action for the next two weeks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Amchitka Island at 96,36

Japanese aircraft
B5N Kate x 3

3 x B5N Kate attacking at 100 feet

strafing Kates... soon we will place Wildcats here...

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 4477 troops, 27 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 123

Japanese max defense: 12 - adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 117 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Mannargudi base !!!

125 casualties reported

we take back the first base in India. While Hortlund says the base is empty I see 402 troops there. Not many, but definetely NOT empty. Two units were there. At Kai Island I have really NO troops. Everything is a matter of oppinion...

not much difference between this deliberate attack and the bombardments before, only that we take losses with the deliberate attack too.

tomorrow I have ordered nearly 100 LB-30 (I have so many because two 48 plane BG arrived fully equipped with them instead of B-24D) will bomb Hanoi´s resources again as we only spot a good dozen Oscars on Cap there. This is the biggest resource / HI center in range of my bombers (of which I will bomb because this one was Japanese before 12/41 already) and all that Hortlund puts there after my last attack are perhaps two dozen Oscars... If our bombers will launch we will do some good damage. Weather forecast is overcast tomorrow.

we spotted a couple of ships at Andaman a couple of turns ago and got recon about CAs there. Turned out to be only a CL and a couple of DDs but I think it wasn´t a fault to send our CAs. Arrow and Van Galen should both make it if they can put out the fires next turn, 9 hexes to Trimcomalee which is a level 9 port. Kiso could be in trouble but I guess she will make Rangoon and can be saved, Yukaze "should" sink...

Day Air attack on Akyab , at 30,29

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 37

Allied aircraft
CW-22 Falcon x 1
B-26B Marauder x 49

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3 Zero: 18 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-26B Marauder: 6 destroyed, 29 damaged

this combat report shows that I got pretty much careless the last couple of turns. Or is it more a question of dumbness to have 400 fighters in India and you still send in your bombers unescorted... No aircraft at Akyab, those Zeroes came from Rangoon (where they are normally spotted flying Cap - not this turn). The low morale of the Marauders saved them from a disaster as the ones that weren´t shot down turned back...

the following Wellington III attack had more luck as a lot of Zeroes were damaged by the Marauders, so the British only encountered 18 Zeroes over the base. But most of my attacking squadrons are inoperational now. 7 Marauders and 4 Wellingtons were lost today, thank god only one British pilot had to be replaced...

good day for us!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/10/42

Day Air attack on Hanoi , at 36,37

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
LB-30 Liberator: 1 destroyed, 21 damaged

Resources hits 14

Aircraft Attacking:
29 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 6000 feet

this is my third attack on Hanoi and still there are only two Chutais of Oscars on Cap even though my opponent has hundreds of fighters (perhaps he lacks av support there). Serves me well, we lose 3 LB-30 but the resources are down to 449(600). Unfortunately it was very cloudy today. Hortlund knows that I don´t bomb Japanese occupied Allied HI/oil/resources so there aren´t that many targets around (considering the truce in China and I have no bombers there), so it shouldn´t be that hard to guard them. Especially such an important target like Hanoi... IMO a fault!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sub attack near Rangoon at 29,34

Japanese Ships
CL Kiso, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS O24

We get some sinkings from our surface engagement at Andaman Island two days ago! DD Yukaze sunk today, 3 hexes off Rangoon and the heavily damaged CL Kiso was going unescorted to Rangoon where she was sunk by two torps of O24! I had three subs operating against the damaged ships that were expected to head to Rangoon. Excellent news also, my two damaged DDs will surely make it and will arrive at Trimcomalee in two days. Means we sunk a CL and another DD for no loss on our side! At the moment the Japanese lost 57 DDs!!!! and 11 CL!!!! It will be amazing how many DDs and cruisers will be left at the end of the next half year... if we keep up this speed, then the Japanese won´t have more than two or three dozen DDs in mid 43!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 72962 troops, 908 guns, 28 vehicles, Assault Value = 1558

Defending force 97609 troops, 945 guns, 24 vehicles, Assault Value = 1715

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Trimcomalee

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 13107 troops, 121 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 218

Defending force 2427 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 112

Allied max assault: 227 - adjusted assault: 147

Japanese max defense: 59 - adjusted defense: 5

Allied assault odds: 29 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
103 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
80 casualties reported

I will stop those deliberate attacks now as both my bgds have 10% disablements and 5% dead already. It just doesn´t make sense to attack cut off troops. I have ordered fighter bombers to take care of the stranded parts of the IJA division as I can´t completely wreck my two Indian bgds for nothing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 3473 troops, 135 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1715

Defending force 92461 troops, 1000 guns, 28 vehicles, Assault Value = 1558

Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported

The situation at Akyab is nothing to cheer about. The constant Japanese bombardments have completely wrecked my three HQ units. The one in the lead is completely disabled and has lost already 30% of the support squads...

Superior British surface forces heavily damaged the IJN light cruiser Kiso which was later sunk by SS O24!

Background
Kiso was the fifth and last vessel completed in the Kuma-class of light cruisers. As with its sister ships, it was intended for use both as a long-range, high speed scout ship and also as a command vessel for destroyer or submarine flotillas.

Service Career

Early career
Kiso was completed on 4 May 1921 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki shipyards. Soon after completion, Kiso was fitted with both a forward and an aft flat superstructure, with a rotating floatplane take-off platform located aft for experimental and testing purposes.

Kiso was then assigned to cover the landings of Japanese troops in Siberia during Japan's Siberian Intervention against the Bolshevik Red Army. It was subsequently based at Port Arthur, and patrolled the China coast between the Kwantung Leased Territory and Tsingtao.

On 17 April 1939, Kiso fired a 21-gun salute as the USS Astoria arrived at Yokohama carrying the remains of Hiroshi Saito, the Japanese ambassador to the United States, who died while on assignment to Washington DC.

Operations in northern waters
On 10 November 1941, Kiso was assigned to CruDiv 21 in the Japanese 5th fleet under Vice Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya, and was painted in Arctic camouflage for operations in northern waters. At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Kiso was patrolling in the Kuril islands, and after suffering hull damage due to severe weather, was forced to return to Yokosuka by the end of the year.

From January to end April 1942, Kiso resumed its patrol assignment in northern waters, accompanied by its sister ship, Tama.

In April, after the Doolittle Raid, Kiso was one of many vessels sent in unsuccessful pursuit of US Navy Task Force 16 with the USS Hornet, and USS Enterprise. Kiso's main batteries scuttled guard boats No. 26 Nanshin Maru and No. 1 Iwate Maru after those vessels had been damaged by planes from the Enterprise during the Doolitte Raid.

In May 1942, Kiso accompanied the converted seaplane tender Kimikawa Maru on a scouting mission to Kiska and Adak, in the Aleutian Islands. The Adak mission was successful, but Kiska was obscured by weather. At the end of (28 May 1942), Kiso was part of the Battle of the Aleutian Islands, in "Operation AL" (the seizure of Attu and Kiska). The invasion force landed troops on Kiska on 7 June 1942, with Kiso covering. On 10 June 1942, offshore Kiska, Kiso and several other ships and a few destroyers were attacked by a formation of six B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. Kiso was undamaged. Likewise, on 14 June 1942 Kiso was attacked by PBY Catalina flying boats, with near misses. Kiso returned safely to Mutsu Bay on 24 June 1942.

On 28 June 1942, Kiso and Tama participated in the second reinforcement convoy to Kiska, then patrolled southwest of Kiska in anticipation of an American counter-attack, returning to Yokosuka on 16 July 1942. From 16 July - 2 August 1942, after refit at Yokosuka, Kiso returned north to patrol around Kiska, and covered the transfer of the Attu garrison to Kiska on 20 August 1942, returning to Ominato on 18 September 1942. Kiso continued a series of patrol and resupply missions to the Kuriles and Aleutians from October through the end of March 1943.

On 28 March 1943, Vice Admiral Shiro Kawase assumed command of the Fifth Fleet. Kiso was sent to dry dock on 4 April 1943 for a major refit, during which its 900-mm searchlights were replaced by three Type 96 1100-mm searchlights. Two Type 96 twin-mount 25-mm AA guns were added at port and starboard above the aft torpedo-tube mounts. She was also fitted with a No. 21 air-search radar.

On 11 May 1943, Kiso was sent with the destroyers Hatsushimo and Wakaba to escort the Kimikawa Maru transporting eight Mitsubishi F1M2 ("Pete") Type 0 observation floatplanes and two Nakajima A6M2-N (gRufeh) fighter floatplanes of the No. 452 Kaigun Kokutai to Attu. However, the Americans invaded and retook Attu the same day, and the mission was scrubbed. Kiso was sent instead on 21 May 1943 to assist in the evacuation of Japanese forces from Kiska. After several attempts due to poor weather, Kiso managed to evacuate 1,189 troops from Kiska on 29 July 1943. It continued its patrols in the area until the end of August.

Operations in southern waters
On 15 September 1943, Kiso was assigned south, and ferried troops from Ponape, Caroline Islands to Truk, arriving 23 September 1943 and returning to Kure on 4 October 1943

Likewise, on 12 October 1943, Kiso and Tama embarked troops in Shanghai. The Kiso had a narrow escape from the USS Grayback (SS-208) while in the East China Sea, but safely arrived at Truk on 18 October 1943. From Truk, Kiso was assigned to carry the troops further, to Rabaul, New Britain. On 21 October 1943, 53 miles from Cape St. George, the cruisers were attacked by RAAF Bristol Beaufort bombers from Guadalcanal. Kiso sustained a direct hit by a 250-lb. bomb. The damage was severe enough to force a return to Maizuru for repairs. After arriving at Maizuru on 10 November 1943, Kiso was also modified by having its two 140-mm gun mounts removed and replaced by a dual 127-mm HA gun mount. Three triple mount and six single mount Type 96 25-mm AA guns were also installed bringing their total to 19 (3x3, 2x2, 6x1).

After modifications were completed on 3 March 1944, Kiso was sent north again to resume its patrol duties for the following three months. On 30 June 1944, Kiso and Tama were sent from Yokosuka with army reinforcements to Ogasawara islands, returning on 3 July 1944. Kiso was then kept in the Inland Sea area from 10 August 1944 for training and guard duties.

With the invasion of Leyte starting 20 October 1944, Kiso was ordered south, but was still at Kure taking on a resupply of ammunition for Vice Admiral Kurita's fleet at the time of the Battle off Samar on 25 October 1944. After departing Sasebo with carrier Junyo and DesDiv 30's Uzuki, Yuzuki and Akikaze, Kiso was spotted 160 miles west of Cape Bolinao, Luzon, Philippines by the USS Pintado. The USS Pintado was accompanied by the USS Jallao and the USS Atule and was working in close cooperation with the USS Haddock, USS Halibut and the USS Tuna. The USS Pintado fired all six of its bow torpedoes, but one of the Japanese destroyers came between the carrier and cruisers, sacrificing itself.

Admiral Kurita's ammunition was unloaded by 8 November 1944, whereupon the Kiso, together with the Junyo, cruisers Tone, Haguro and Ashigara, DesDiv 30's Uzuki and the Yuzuki following the battleships Yamato, Kongo and Nagato, light cruiser Yahagi with DesDiv 17's Hamakaze, Isokaze and the Yukikaze returned towards Japan. Kiso, Junyo, Tone and DesDiv 30 were detached to Manila instead. Kiso became the flagship of the Fifth Fleet, replacing Abukuma.

On 13 November 1944, on the threat of American carrier strikes on Luzon, Kiso was ordered to return to Brunei that evening carrying Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima. Before she could leave for Brunei, she was attacked by more than 350 carrier planes of Task Force 38's carrier task groups 38.1's USS Hornet, USS Monterey and the USS Cowpens, TG 38.3's USS Essex, USS Ticonderoga and USS Langley and TG 38.4's USS Enterprise and the USS San Jacinto. Three bombs hit Kiso to starboard - one in the bow, one near her boiler rooms and one near her aft gun mounts. Kiso sank in shallow water eight miles west of Cavite at 14‹35ŚN, 120‹50ŚE. Captain Imamura and most of the Kiso's crew survived.

The Kiso was removed from the Navy list on 20 March 1945.

After the war, the wreck was salvaged on 15 December 1955, by the Nippon Salvage Company, which refloated the wreckage into Manila Harbor for breaking up.

well, my best FG outside of India... We lose 5:1 A2A and that isn´t really encouraging. Must be one of the turns that convices Hortlund about how crippled Japan is in the mod... We lost 5:1 against Oscars and 4:0 against Zeroes, what do you think will happen when all those Army fighters will be Tojos? Japan only produces something about 300/month. A laughable number if you think about the fact that I get 35 of those P-38 wonder weapons... It really looks like I have to wait another 3 months until the Corsair arrives, then start an all out invasion somewhere under a "one turn only CAP" of my carriers to seize an airfield. Then put Corsairs there and hop to the next base in range of 5 hexes...

two of the three pilots that achieved a kill didn´t return...

and this is how the sub war looks like. All our subs have been forced to head back to home ports due to the use of IJAAF bombers on ASW duty. Two of my subs were entering the Malacca straits in the area of Victoria Port and were immediately attacked. One is sunk... no IJAAF bombers have been seen on anything else than ASW patrol the last months...

I feel your pain when it comes to how to use Allied subs close to land.  I tried to go between Java and Sumatra a while back and the sub was sunk by mines.   Since it is past 1/43 in my game and all my subs have been upgraded since they spent the first 6 months on sub transport duty, I'm trying to formulate a strategy both tactical and strategic. Support my invasions and sink AK/AP/TKs trying to get through the choke points to Japan.  Any Ideas??

it´s really frustrating but at the moment there´s nothing I can do regarding offensive operations... it would be suicide to send out my carriers and the P38 proved to be completely worthless when losing 5:1 against Oscars, I don´t want to think about the kill rates if my super P-38 will meet Tojos. At the moment I have no clue what to do as all the front line bases have 100 Japanese fighters on Cap, while Burma is empty (which is the only front I could attrit my opponent). It´s easy with the uber flak to defend Burma, there´s no need to send your fighters... it´s a pain, but I´ve never faced such a situation before. Even though I played Nikmod before, I never faced an opponent that used half a dozen AA regiments at the front line jungle bases, which seems to make it impossible for me to do any significant damage - to my opponent, I´m only damaging myself...

DD Cummings was lost off Lautern to a Japanese long lance...

USS Cummings (DD-365), 1936-1947

USS Cummings, a 1465-ton Mahan class destroyer built at New York City, was placed in commission in November 1936. Following initial service in the Atlantic area, she was sent to the Pacific in the fall of 1937 and, with the exception of 1939 U.S. Fleet maneuvers in the Caribbean, served in that ocean for the next six years. Based at Pearl Harbor beginning in April 1940, she made a cruise to Samoa, New Zealand and Tahiti in March and April 1941, but mainly operated in the Hawaiian area as political tensions rose between the United States and Japan.

Cummings was tied up at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard when Japanese planes attacked the Fleet there on 7 December 1941, thus bringing the two nations into open warfare. She was employed on convoy escort service between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland for the rest of 1941 and the first four months of 1942. In May Cummings went to the south Pacific, where she carried out patrol and escort missions during the Guadalcanal campaign and the subsequent operations to seize bases further north in the Solomon Islands chain. After being overhauled on the West Coast in the fall of 1943 Cummings served in the Alaskan theater for a few weeks late in the year.

In January and February 1944 Cummings screened U.S. aircraft carriers during the Marshalls campaign. She operated with the British Navy in the Indian Ocean in March-May of that year, then returned to Hawaii to resume service in the central Pacific. In July and the destroyer escorted the heavy cruiser Baltimore as she carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Hawaii and Alaska and back to the U.S. The President was on board Cummings for a few days in August during trips between Seattle, Washington, and the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Cummings took part in raids on Wake and Marcus Islands during September and October 1944, and accompanied escort aircraft carriers during the Leyte invasion later in October. She was thereafter stationed in the Marianas and Bonin Islands areas, mainly performing patrol, escort and air-sea rescue missions, but also taking part in the assault on Iwo Jima in February and March 1945. In September 1945, after Japan's surrender, Cummings supervised the occupation of Haha Jima. She then steamed home, stopping at San Pedro, California, on her way to the U.S. East Coast. USS Cummings was decommissioned in December 1945, stricken from the list of Naval vessels in January 1947 and sold for scrapping in July of that year.

USS Cummings was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Andrew B. Cummings (1830-1863), who lost his life as a result of wounds received on board USS Richmond in March 1863.

perhaps I should improve my AA defense here to scare away the Betties... this base will be the staging point for my fighters to fly sweeps to Lautern. There were 194!!!! Japanese figters spotted on Cap today! how that is possible with a stacking limit of 250 aircraft there is a mistery for me. I have 228 fighters at Wyndham and get nearly 100 into the air with 80% Cap... A base that has 100+ fighters on Cap is impossible to attack with sweeps as I would lose 1000 aircraft for 200 enemy aircraft shot down...

IMO, P-38's need experience and to get that they need numbers. Maybe sweep with two groups (or the equivalent) at once until they get their ratings up.

As far as facing 200 fighters on CAP - try hitting someplace else for a while???

YMMV

the problem is that I neither have high numbers of P-38 at this date (probably I will have to wait at least 3 more months) nor can I hit somewhere else at the moment, as carrier air alone is worn done within one day and the next days my ships would be toast. I guess I have to really wait for Corsairs...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/18/42

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Akyab , at 30,29

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 25
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 13

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3 Zero: 12 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 13 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 26 destroyed, 20 damaged

the Japanese fighters are flying LRCAP over Akyab again. This is the AVG splitted into three groups flying a sweep before my bombers are going in. Well, what can I say, once again it´s just depressing. Due to the (now banned) fighter training those FG were all 80 exp and they achieve a lousy result even though we had the bounce AND outnumbered the enemy 2:1. We achieve a 1:1 kill rate against the Oscars and lose something like 15:0 against the Zeroes... 70 exp Lightnings lose 15:0 against Zeroes, 80 exp Warhawks lose 15:0 against Zeroes, will be some funny years...

Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 19

Aircraft Attacking:

the second attack goes in. Now the enemy Cap is already completely out of position and the result is loopsided again, this time in my favour... 25 enemy fighters shot down for 2 P-40s lost. We lose the P-40 replacement of 3 weeks and AVG is down to 70 exp again...
