I was wrong with my assumption that Hortlund wonīt come in right at Batavia. In fact, I really donīt know why heīs doing that, when he could just land at the empty base right next to Batavia... oh well, serves me good...

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

The AVG is as useless as a British Buffalo squadron I could put in the air. I lose another 5 Tomahawks from the AVG and then they break off! Break off? Itīs their first encounter of enemy fighters and they break off?? They lose 10 fighters today and take down a single enemy fighter... 10:1? Good kill rate for the AVG... The Oscars on escort are doing far better than Zeroes on sweep. I expected to be massively attacked and therefor I expected to suffer. But with such more or less small attacks I thought I could hurt my enemy a bit more. The fighters will be in position for one more turn, then the majority of the combat troops from Rangoon will be evacuated...

We also see 3 reported CAs 6 hexes South of Rangoon so I expect to see a night surface combat next turn. 2 CAs with 4 DDs in a TF, two PTs in a TF, a MSW in a TF AND a single BB in a TF that is coming in next turn (the one I forgot to include with the DDs in a TF... ) are awaiting any incoming enemy. I already see my BB being surprised and sunk by long lances...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

damn, Hortlund landed another division and only one of my inf units (of course the smaller one) was able to get out of the base quickly enough. A PA division is shredded due to the attack. The low casualties are really misleading as a retreat causes huge losses... In a couple of days the last reinforcement at Bataan arrives and then Iīm considering to retreat from Clark into Manila while the other troops will still block the units in the wooden hex South of Manila. The only problem I see is if Hortlund decides to let my troops just rot and he only uses a brigade or two to block me and use my troops as training targets for his airforce training programm...

Ground combat at Malacca

Japanese Deliberate attack

ohh ohh... a 1:1 is not good news. Hopefully Hortlund will rest his troops next turn. My units are ordered already to get out of the hex and retreat to the South, which will take TWO turns... wow, looks like I made it possible to see Malaya, Burma, the Philipines and Java being lost at the end of December... not to talk about the Changsha area... good god - I really suck...

Japanese ground losses:
19 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

a single brigade was landed. Wonder if it will be enough to shock attack me out, or if he will bring more units. Donīt know what terrain Batavia is but I hope itīs wooden as we donīt have forts to cause some trouble... The only reason we have still "a lot" of troops at Batavia is the fact that we want to try to damage as many oil, ressource points as possible. 100 damaged ressource points are worse for the Japanese than one or two weeks more fighting in Java...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Malang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 5607 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 145

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 80 - adjusted assault: 21

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 21 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Malang base !!!

Only parts of the 48th division were landed at Malang. With the 100 assault points at Kragen the Japanese have now around 250 assault points in the Soerabaja area. We have around 150 with lots of base forces and obsolete aircrafts. What we fear the most are IJN BB bombardments of Soerabaja...

The air losses of this turn. As you can see, the Japanese lost more planes today. The fighter losses were 2:1 in favour of the Japanese which seems not to be as bad also, but our fighters are worn down quickly, whith the AVG already being completely useless due to low morale. Why it has such a low morale, I donīt know... perhaps being set to training 0% in India is a morale killer....

I lost the combat report for 12/22/41 as it was overwritten by the new one. We saw another Zero sweep to Rangoon which first failed to find the target, then it came in and the Japanese lost 4 Zeroes with 4 US P40 lost also. Some more Zeroes were damaged and another 2 crashed. The 3 reported CAs proved to be only DDs which tried to intercept my fleeing evacuation fleet but missed by one hex.

This turn was a very good turn for my subs, which once again IMO proves that the PH attack is (in the game) worse than a Manila attack to take out all those subs. No ships were sunk at PH, though nearly 200 planes destroyed on the ground. All (95%) fleeing ships from the Philipinese were sunk but most from Java, Malaya made it out. If Hortlund wouldnīt have invaded Palmyra, Johnston and Christmas Island then there wouldnīt have been a reason why KB should be in the Hawaian area.

Japanese Ships
SS I-171

CV Saratoga
DD Talbot

I-171 fires a salvo of two torps at Saratoga but misses. I was lucky, but in this game it equals out so far as we had a lot of torp misses on major IJN vessels. We had to retire Saratoga to Canton to pick up the 8000 fuel there. She will now sprint to Pago Pago to meet the other two CVs. In a week or so we will have the USMC div completely unloaded at Canton and 40.000 fuel at Pago Pago as well as tens of thousands supplies. A USMC def btn will unload at Pago Pago in a week and a RCT in three weeks. Then, both targets will be tough to take if not really a LOT of material is brought there. No super fast attack with a nav guard possible then. Also the loss of shipping should be substantial then as on both islands are at least 30+ 5 inch or 155mm CD guns. Forts are being built and our troops are further preparing. Still donīt know what KB is doing as our Catalinas havenīt spotted them for a couple of turns, nor did we get any "Val sights sub at xy" messages. Perhaps KB retires to Truk or so. With New Caledonia in Japanese hands KB could perhaps support an attack on New Zealand, which would isolate Australia. This would mean I would go right through the Pacific (hard to do - if not impossible - with carriers only and a lot of leakers) or through the Aleutans, which seems a bit gamey to me as the game allows far more operations up there as was possible in real life IMO. Another option would then be Pago Pago - Fidjis - New Caledonia and cut off the Japanese in New Zealand.

today, Changsha was cut off and we donīt have a supply or retreat path. Forts are soon at 4, further increasing, most troops there 100% prepped, a couple of HQs (support green) AND I get auto supply at that base, which means it could be really hard to starve my troops there (wonder if Hortlund knows that I get auto supply there). We now hope that a couple of attacks can be repulsed while our troops can get out of the mountains and jungles to bring 2000 more assault points to the Changsha area. Then we will attack the weakest spot in the chain around Changsha, as Hortlund canīt put more than 2 or max. 3 divisions in one hex (if he even has that many around there already). He uses the trick of splitting his divisions so that I see more units when I hover over the unit stacks... Our offensive towards Kaifeng goes on in the meantime, as well as 1500 assault points have left Ichang to the East.... of course offensive actions are limited by our far too low supply levels but we can easily kick around one or one and a half IJA divisions...

Wonder why Hortlund didnīt order an immediate shock attack, as he must be sure about me trying to evac my troops (which I already succesfully did). I had 31 damaged P40s there, was able to bring more than a dozen out this turn. So we expect to lose a good dozen P40s tomorrow as well as parts of the inf units there and a couple of understrenght base forces...

13 troops... ???????? Hurrey, those para attacks get smaller and smaller... the sub invasions Iīve seen were most often 10 or 20 times bigger than those para drops... 13 soldiers couldnīt take such a base and hold it, not even against third line troops...

A BIG issue I have at the moment is the fact that my forts at Singapore are BUGGED!!! Hurrey again! We have 200+ eng and a dozen vehicles there for a dozen turns but after the forts increased to level 0 48% they just stopped to further increase... makes it easy to take Singapore then, when Iīm hit by a "canīt build forts" bug... will this ever stop? 17.000 supplies, no damage to port, airfield, airbase... eng and combat eng at the base... OH WELL... checked it for the last 4 turns, never increasing, will check it also the next turns...

I'm at 12/18/41 with John 3rd and the only think unexpected is the use of his subs. He has 2 or 3 at key ports (like all around Java) and with very few ASW ships (those with an ASW of 1 don't count ), I have yet to find a good counter strategy (this is Big B's v1.4). I will probably use the Flush Decks as they have the best at 4 for the Americans and have yet to get a British group together. I miss the CHS game in which my Clemson DD's upgrade on 1/42 to finsih with an ASW of 8. This tactics would be short lived.

I can read your AAR and it makes me feel I'm not suffering as much.
My shipping from Manila is much like yours...sunk

so far, the IJN subs werenīt a problem, not nearly as effective as my subs... if nothing really bad happens then Iīm confident so far. All those bases I lost so far were lost because they were empty (not possible to reinforce within the first couple of days...), we will see what happens when Hortlund attacks the first target that is well defended...

again the Japanese are able to reduce a fort level... I was shocked by the high Allied losses even when the Japanese get a 0:1 Watching that, I thought the base will fall in no time, but after looking at my troops I discovered that "only" my 5 HQ units that are the first units in the stack were shredded. The first one went down from something like 90/100 to 39/97... my inf units didnīt suffer at all but the attack did cost us 3000 supplies... The fort level again went up to 3 this turn...

In three days the last unit in the Philipines will arrive (100 av). Iīm thinking about moving 300 assault points more to this hex and try a shock attack. Would mean 400 assault points would stay at Clark (fort 0, clear terrain - so we are in extreme danger to be kicked out, all troops preparing for Manila) and 850 would try the shock attack South of Manila. Itīs a wooden hex so Iīm not sure if I will achieve something. If I could kick the Japanese back then nearly a dozen units would suffer... and then the IJA would need more reinforcements to take the Philipines...

Ground combat at Rangoon

not surprising, Rangoon fell today... a lot of troops surrendered so the IJA did get some good victory points, but I was able to evacuate nearly all combat troops in good condition. Kicked back to Mandalay and then on the trails would have caused more headache if the IJA goes for India. Though I have achieved a new record in losing Burma that early. The evac cost me a MSW, an AK and perhaps 40 P40s...

800 assault points will be far to less to take Malaya as this is the same av that I have available and I donīt have to shock attack over the river into Singapore. Though my forts in Singapore didnīt go up, so thereīs definetely something bugged. No damage to anything but forts donīt even go up to 1... oh well...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SE Borneo Garrison Battalion Wiped Out at Banjarmasin by attrition!!!

my units get wiped out one after another but Iīm happy about it as this way they canīt serve as training targets for the Japanese airforce later on...

I checked the ship losses so far and the Japanese will soon meet our losses points wise as well as in number of ships sunk. More than 30 APs are sunk in not even 3 weeks, most by subs. This is excellent as APs are the most important ships early on for all those invasions (with a lot more damaged). With the reduced cargo capacity in Nikmod this will be even more severe. Though 30 wonīt be enough to stop further expansion but at least we hurt our enemy...

our subs could have had a field day again... without luck, 80% of our torps missed or failed to detonate. The good news today is that Hortlund stated in his email that he already has some big concerns about my subs killing so many ships, as he told me he never had so many losses so early in the game, not able to do something against it...

WOW, the IJN DDs are still at Akyab and the paras are still at the base. The Oscars fight well and my bombers are all missing. The two hits were achieved by the Swordfish from 5000 ft. With that hit rate it will be hard to defend us against an upcoming invasion in India and 2 500lb bombs are not enough to heavily damage a DD. A cruiser squadron is sent out next turn to intercept the possible retreat of the DDs but it would be just pure luck to guess the right hex...

Castor,

excellent play with your subs! Some of them should be quite experienced by now. Subs are always quite deadly against an agressive Japanese opponent like Hortlund, if properly employed by someone who understands the art of sub warfare. Should be interesting to see if such early successes really hurt Japanese troop transport capacities in CHS.

thanks!

Havenīt tracked their experience but when I look at what they hit, oh well... lotīs of torps just miss their targets (mostly slow transports). But Iīm absolutely happy with their performance so far. Nice to see so many APs sinking but I fear Hortlunds troop transport capacity isnīt really hurt yet and targets get fewer as soon all his landings in the DEI are over. Weīre playing Nikmod, donīt know how it looks like in CHS.

Hortlund stated that follow on invasions will soon start, when Java will be Japanese. The question will be, Australia, India or New Zealand...

I am Hortland's Japanese opponent using this same mod. Transport losses can hurt, but not as much as you hope. In one game, I have lost 80+ transports, and can still lift 2 1/2 divisions anywhere I want. Hardest part is massing the transports. And those are the small/medium transports. Of course I have 80 or so AP's in the body shop. (note, these losses are not against Hortland).

Watch for surface fights...............he loves surface actions. Not sure about this now that I think about it...............He is always allies against me.

You are doing nothing really wrong.............I have taken all major bases in the SRA and it is Feb 42. Only Manilla and Timor stands. The key as the Japanese is to use mass. I classify the PI as a side show really and it only gets 3 div at start............the 38th moves to help out after HK falls.

Yeah, those AP losses wonīt stop him at all, but as mentioned, he starts thinking about it. So perhaps invasions in the near future will be better protected and not everywhere at once (with the lack of targets itīs easily to focus then anyway ), so perhaps I get some more time. Time is all I need and every week counts! I expected an invasion of Canton Island, Pago Pago and the Fidjis already but it came "late" - or it will never come (though I donīt understand the attack on Johnston or Palmyra then) - as Canton now has a USMC division. Next will be Pago Pago and if Hortlund doesnīt go for the Fidjis it will be reinforced also, but I have no ships at the West coast to pick up a unit at all.

I love surface fights too! So far Iīm happy in how they went and it seems Iīm more the one who seeks for them...

our Martins became ship busters in the last couple of weeks... started off real bad but Iīm really satisfied by what they achieved so far. And we still have an ace left that Hortlund didnīt expect! While he is save from our level bombers, we still have half a dozen obsolete torp bombers left (exp around 60) of which one puts a torp into Fuso which should send her into the repair yards...

Allied Ships
TK Empire Flint, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

now thatīs something I like! Again, a bombardment without any recon before that doesnīt do real damage - not a single aircraft out of 80 is lost. In return a CL is shot up pretty bad. This is something that happened to me also when doing bombardments as IJN at Soerabaja as those CD guns there seem to be pretty effective...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

West of Changsha! We take advantage of the rule that the Japanese attack first! After our troops were only encountering a tank brigade here last turn I ordered a shock attack. Now our shock attack kicked out the tank brigade AND the brigade that had to shock attack across the river this turn. Looks like Hortlund isnīt using the follow unit command (or it isnīt working - once again) as his troops are coming across the river one by one. Expect to see more troops crossing the river in the next few turns...

we entered Kaifeng and order a bombardment to get an idea of the troops there. Donīt know how the forts look like, I expect level 3. Another corps will move in and then a deliberate attack is launched. 1800 against 670 should hopefully be enough to achieve something.

With the ground war in China I wonder if I will face Kwangtung units also there. We only have "the usual house rules" but we didnīt specify it to "no Kwangtung units in China without paying the pp"... With the available Kwangtung units in China we will soon be steamrolled back to India...

nice one! Sent in my low experienced (below 40) Chinese bombers on a long range strike from Chungking. Amazingly they hit two ships in port with a 250kg AP bomb, but I lose 2 to flak in return. Only a nuissance raid but perhaps Hortlund is forced to place some fighters over valuable bases. Those Chinese bombers are the perfect ship killers though as they carry something like 10+ 250kg AP bombs!!! Means they are far better than any of the US 4Es... Pitily I only get 10 a month with pilots not able to fly them. They will be soon flown to India to defend it against a possible upcoming invasion.

2 IJA div and a brigade have arrived at Nanning facing 4 Chinese corps. Wooden hex, level 4 forts, enough supplies and 3 units are fully prepped. Canīt see how those IJA troops can break through here but I expect more to be brought in. Good to see Burma HQ and Southern Area HQ units fighting in China, as they canīt invade places more important than China then... Now something I have learnt this turn: I always was told that if you are forced out of the base then you lose the supply there to the attacker, but if you move out, the supply will move with you!!! FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though my HQs are at Manila, 16000 supplies (=85% of all available supply) was always at Clark - AND IT STAYED THERE!!!!

Means with my move from Clark to Manila I have lost 85% of my supply... Means we can already surrender...

We miss the needed 4:1 by 100 adjusted av... at least the forts are at 0 now but I shredded the leading corps in the stack, while the Japanese didnīt suffer at all. My units are highly disrupted 70+ - thought that happens only when you get a 0:1 - so I have to wait at least two or three turns until my next attack. The goal of this offensive is: a) try to get some supplies from the Japanese, b) force some IJA units to retreat to make them combat ineffective for some time and c) force Hortlund to bring some divisions from the South.

While I donīt know about a), b) could be managable but c) seems completely a dream of mine as Hortlund even moves more troops TO the South instead of trying to do something about my offensive in the North.

Hi Castor,

I wouldn't feel too down hearted about the result at Kaifeng, you've set yourself up for a victory.  Looks like you've got roughly 4 Chinese corp attacking and suffered 3% casualties (although it's probably more like 10% combat casualties).  The disruption will go down quickly and (unless the IJA can get some reserve troops in quickly) you should still have the 2:1 on the next assault you need to take the base.  Nice move BTW.

On the supply thing - not having direct control over supply distribution does cause problems.  Sometimes it takes a few days for supplies to move from high concentrations to an area of need, even if it is only next door.  As far as HQ's go, I've always found that rather than actually pulling in supplies, they just don't let them leave unitil you get to the 25K they want.  Supplies only seem to move reliably based on the 2x requirement of all units at the base.  It does seem like your defence has been totally undermined by the supply routine.  Might be worth explaining and asking your opponent to allow a convoy through.  I've allowed a similar thing for my Allied opponent when 20K of supplies disappeared from Darwin.

Thanks for your kind words Yakface!

I too think that I will be able to take Kaifeng. I have more troops - if needed - a hex West of Kaifeng, blocking an IJA division North behind the river. I just wonder if it really helps me to take Kaifeng, while bleeding my troops that I could need in a month or so defending Chungking, as it seems that all will collaps if Hortlund breaks through in the South. There are probably 4 or 5 IJA divisions from Southern area HQ operating in China now, donīt know about Kwangtung area troops.

The supply system is a mess and Iīve known that since starting to play (and loving ) WITP so I wonīt ask my opponent to let a supply convoy through. I made a mistake in attacking in the South, I should just have my opponent let attack me. So I lost the Philipines early because of a mistake I made and I will accept it - just like I lost Burma 3 months early...

I WILL BE BACK!

At this stage I spend around 1,5 hours for a turn, watching the replay included. Could do it perhaps a bit faster, but as Iīm having enough time until I get a new turn I decided to do my turns carefully.

It doesnīt take that long to organize my subs. 5 Minutes? Maybe 6. Whatīs really important is my naval search. I still have the 2 Catalina squadrons that start out in the Philipines at two of the islands there as well as most Dutch Dorniers around Java, which spot a lot of convoys. Once we spot a convoy I order at least 4 subs to hunt it - in best case 6 or 7. So mostly Iīm only operating on a max. of 3 TFs but those get hit hard normally. Of course in joke points we also just stumble over IJN TFs while we are on the move to operate on the big spotted TFs.

So if Hortlund wanted to half his ship losses to subs, he would just have to bomb those bases where my patrol aircrafts are...

Another BIG mistake of mine!!!! I wanted to swap out a division from Nanning with the corps from Pakhoi. The corps moved to Nanning but the division needed one day more... of course suddenly paras are flown in, the movement of my division is cancelled and now Pakhoi is Japanese. Unfortunately this is somewhere exploiting the game engine, as I canīt understand why my troopīs movement is cancelled, but I have to say itīs of course a good move of my opponent. Iīm 100% sure that soon another Southern area division or even two are landed at Pakhoi, which means I have to give up Nanning also and march back towards Canton, taking position behind the river...

What the hell can I do against all those Southern area divisions when itīs hard enough to fight in China with far too few troops anyway?

I'd be happy if my Japanese opponent diverted 2 SAA divisions to China during the crucial first 6 months of the war. Whats another 2 divisions when the Japanese have so much AV in China? And thats 2 less divisions rampaging through the PI/Malaya/DEI/India/Australia/South Pacific.
Id almost trade space in China for time.....let him advance into China and take a couple of cities just to keep those SAA divisions out of the rest of the war.

yes, I agree. The only problem I see is when there are enough divisions in China to completely conquer it. I still have troops crawling at 2 miles a day in mountain or jungle hexes and am weeks away from having my troops where I want them to be. Would Hortlung use those divs in two months I would say, no problem, my troops are dug in and in position, but at the moment the consequence of facing those division could be to lose China, or at least 80% of it. When he really breaks through, with the right follow on moves one Chinese held city could fall after another. This would be the known China walkthrough then...

I didnīt receive the combat replay nor the combat report for 1/5/42 because Hortlund already did another turn of one of his PBEMs so no AAR for that day. I didnīt give many orders as this has no sense if I havenīt seen the replay. I just hope that KB doesnīt show up next turn somewhere to sink one of my TFs as I havenīt got anything from this turn...

I always have a bad feeling when something like this happens...

A good day for us regarding the ground war, a bad day regarding ship losses...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/06/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 94 encounters mine field at Noumea (68,113)

Japanese Ships
PG Nikkai Maru
PG Seikai Maru

would be nice to hit the shipping to and from Noumea with some of our mines that are still there. There has yet to show up an IJN MSW, so perhaps we will be lucky and sink a ship or two...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1052 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61)

Allied Ships
DMS Zane
DMS Hopkins
DMS Hovey
DMS Southard

we clear the Type 88 mines at Midway...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 95 troops unloading over beach at Fanning Island, 110,87

dot base in the area of Christmas Island. Wonder what Hortlund wants to do with all those dot bases he took

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1052 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61)

Allied Ships
DMS Zane
DMS Hopkins
DMS Hovey
DMS Southard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Sinkep Island at 22,53

Japanese Ships
AP Hakuyo Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PG Myoken Maru
PG Kiso Maru

Allied Ships
SS Sealion, hits 1

what do we hit?? AN AP OF COURSE!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 57th Chinese Corps, at 47,36

Japanese aircraft
Ki-27 Nate x 32
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 31
Ki-30 Ann x 7
Ki-51 Sonia x 33

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-27 Nate: 3 damaged
Ki-30 Ann: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-51 Sonia: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged

Allied ground losses:
18 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
16 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet

Hortlund has switched to ground support. That isnīt doing him any good as the attacked unit only suffers 32 disruption and nearly no casualties. He would be better off to attack the airbase to reduce my supplies. This way, with the auto supply, my supply levels are going up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 30,68

Allied aircraft
Martin 139 x 4

Allied aircraft losses
Martin 139: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
AP Tatuwa Maru

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Martin 139 bombing at 1000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 31,70

Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 2

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Kembu Maru, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Hudson I bombing at 1000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Canton at 43,41

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 7

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
MSW Tasei Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x IL-4c bombing at 1000 feet

nice one! My Catalinas in the Philipines spot a lot of shipping and my IL-4c take off from Kweiyang and sink a spotted MSW at Canton. Perfect ship killers with 10x250 kg bombs. Even those pilots in the 40s manage to hit this tiny ship...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Canton Island at 98,99

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
AK Alaskan, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AK Steel Trader, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

ouch! Those Betties are coming in from Palmyra. Long range strike but deadly. Those 2 AKs were in a TF consisting of 8 AKs bringing supplies to Canton. When I checked the TF I was shocked! Last turn - where I didnīt have a combat replay nor a combat report - there must have been the same attack also as 2 ships were already sunk and 3 others heavily damaged. With today, the whole TF is lost.

I was never concerned about the loss of Palmyra and Johnston, the only problem that comes up is the fact that you canīt transfer squadrons from Pearl to Canton and further South anymore. This way I have to ship in fighters. 72 P-39s will arrive in two weeks or so, which means Canton is pretty much surpressed by Palmyraīs Betties. The joke is, that those attacks are triggered by the two IJN subs sitting spotted for weeks at Canton under my ASW TF. No chance to get those spotted subs attacked. They just sit spotted in my port... Every sub that is moved every day is in bigger danger to be attacked by a TF that is just passing by than any spotted sub in a base hex sitting there for weeks. Have seen that so MANY times already I could just

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Canton Island at 98,99

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 4 damaged

Allied Ships
AO Tippecanoe
TK Alfred Clegg

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

One TK out of this TF was heavily damaged last turn also...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Pescadores at 47,43

Japanese Ships
AP Tohuku Maru, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Pickerel

hey ho! Of course we hit an AP! lol When playing the Japanese I always complained about NOT being able to do anything against subs early on (when you donīt have hundreds of Sallies/Helens with exp. 80+ but when I see what a toll my subs take on Hortlunds APs then I have to say that I have never really suffered by Allied subs early on! Think that the IJN has lost around 70.000 - 80.000 AP capacity (means around 45 APs - reduced cargo capacity in the mod) so far in APs sunk, not counting those that are damaged... This in a month of war...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Hong Kong

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 24184 troops, 141 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 383

Defending force 12583 troops, 55 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 224

Japanese max assault: 742 - adjusted assault: 184

Allied max defense: 230 - adjusted defense: 489

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
1251 casualties reported
Guns lost 19
Vehicles lost 2

Allied ground losses:
137 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Hortlund wears down his IJA division at Hong Kong with a shock attack!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Nanning

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 53992 troops, 617 guns, 24 vehicles, Assault Value = 1152

Defending force 41451 troops, 261 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 988

Japanese max assault: 1163 - adjusted assault: 209

Allied max defense: 1028 - adjusted defense: 1369

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese ground losses:
2110 casualties reported
Guns lost 52
Vehicles lost 7

Allied ground losses:
742 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

His attack at Nanning fails also - as expected. My inf units didnīt suffer at all, "only" losses in the leading HQ unit. Forts still at four. Still angry about losing Pakhoi to paras because my units didnīt move at the same speed... When Hortlund brings more troops to Pakhoi by ship then I have to abandon Nanning and fall back behind the river West of Canton, which is a problem because I then have to cover 2 or 3 hexes there and I donīt have the troops to do that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kaifeng

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 81097 troops, 530 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2348

Defending force 38534 troops, 445 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 713

Allied max assault: 4496 - adjusted assault: 4175

Japanese max defense: 740 - adjusted defense: 287

Allied assault odds: 14 to 1 (fort level 1)

Allied forces CAPTURE Kaifeng base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
672 casualties reported
Guns lost 33
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
2141 casualties reported
Guns lost 40

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

The second attack on Kaifeng is a succes and the 2 divisions, a brigade and a base force retreat East. This turn did cost the Japanese around 100 victory points in ground losses. On the downside, Kaifeng only has 3000 supplies and not the 10.000 I had hoped for, so the attack did cost me probably more supplies than I conquered. But at least those IJA troops that had to retreat arenīt as combat effective anymore as they were.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Hsinyang

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9179 troops, 70 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1218

Defending force 19352 troops, 209 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 327

We will wait for two more corps and then launch a shock attack. One brigade and a couple of small units defending Hsinyang, probable behind level 3-5 forts. Hortlund is still not interested in my offensives in Central and North China as there are still no troops redirected from the South. The complete opposite is happening, he still brings in more troops to the South! Unfortunately he can just go on in the South, not caring about his bases further North, as he knows (like me) that when he breaks through in the South then all (most) of China is lost, no matter what I achieve in the North.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Fanning Island

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 205 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 6 - adjusted assault: 2

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Fanning Island base !!!

dot base...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Singkawang

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 2169 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 58

Defending force 701 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 26

Japanese max assault: 92 - adjusted assault: 40

Allied max defense: 20 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 40 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
75 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
26 casualties reported

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

G4M1 Betty: 3 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Talbot
DD Kilty
DD Waters, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Dent

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Of course the Betties show up this turn also. All undamaged ships will try to escape after unloading, but it seems I lost a dozen ships here bringing in supplies and fuel... This against a single Betty daitai... I need fighters to cover my base against unescorted raids...

DD Waters is probably sunk...

USS Waters (Destroyer # 115, later DD-115, APD-8 and DD-115), 1918-1946
USS Waters, a 1090-ton Wickes class destroyer built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in August 1918. During the remaining three months of the First World War she escorted shipping across the Atlantic, making two voyages to England and Ireland and one to the Azores. For the first eight months after the Armistice she mainly operated along the U.S. East Coast, but also returned to the Azores twice, the second time, in May 1919 as part of the plane guard line for the trans-Atlantic flight attempt by the Navy's NC seaplanes. Waters transited the Panama Canal in July to become part of the Pacific Fleet. In addition to taking part in exercises off the West Coast, she briefly operated off Hawaii in 1919, steamed to South America in early 1921, and served in the Far East from mid-1921 until mid-1922. Shortly before the end of 1922 Waters was decommissioned and laid up at San Diego, California.

The destroyer returned to commissioned status in June 1930 and for the next six years was mainly stationed in California ports. She voyaged to Hawaii in 1932 and operated in the Atlantic and Caribbean in April-October 1934. In July 1936 Waters went back to Hawaii for three years, during which she played an active role in the development of anti-submarine sonar techniques. This mission continued in West Coast waters in 1939-1941. After the beginning of the Pacific War in December 1941 she conducted searches for Japanese submarines and escorted shipping, primarily between the "lower 48 states" and Alaska.

In December 1942 Waters began conversion to a high-speed transport, receiving the new hull number APD-8 before the work was finished in February 1943. She was then sent to the south Pacific to take part in combat operations. From June 1943 to April 1944 Waters kept busy participating in, and providing follow-on support for, amphibious operations to capture Rendova, New Georgia, Vella Lavella, the Treasury Islands, Bougainville, the Green Islands and Emirau. She also fought several actions against enemy aircraft and, in July 1943, rescued survivors of the sunken cruiser Helena.

Shifting to the central Pacific, Waters took part in the campaigns to seize Saipan and Tinian in June and July 1944, Iwo Jima in February 1945 and Okinawa in March-May 1945. Redesignated DD-115 in August 1945, she was undergoing overhaul at San Pedro, California, when the war ended. The elderly ship had no place in the post-war fleet and was decommissioned in mid-October 1945. USS Waters was stricken from the Navy list soon afterwards and was sold for scrapping in May 1946.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Pescadores at 47,43

Japanese Ships
AP Tenyo Maru

Allied Ships
SS Permit

unfortunately we miss this AP...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Pago Pago at 98,110

Japanese Ships
SS I-3

Allied Ships
AK Susan Luckenbach, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied ground losses:
37 casualties reported

An AK of the TF that brings a RCT to Pago Pago is hit by a sub that we have spotted for 2 weeks in this base hex... spotting subs helps?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 126040 troops, 1237 guns, 139 vehicles, Assault Value = 2295

Defending force 68612 troops, 374 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1755

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Japanese max assault: 2126 - adjusted assault: 1042

Allied max defense: 1778 - adjusted defense: 1441

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese ground losses:
1922 casualties reported
Guns lost 41
Vehicles lost 5

Allied ground losses:
802 casualties reported
Guns lost 45

Again a fort level is reduced, which I really donīt like. Hortlund seems to have no problems at all to reduce forts... My leading HQ units are all nearly without undisrupted support squads while the inf units still look good. A 2:1 would cause them all to surrender though, but Iīm working on establishing a retreat path again...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 43,40

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 24056 troops, 202 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 757

Defending force 19802 troops, 246 guns, 6 vehicles, Assault Value = 433

Allied ground losses:
7 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

an IJA division sits in a wooden hex and it will be hard to kick it out I fear. 3 more units in the wooden hex to the East are surely heading towards this hex NW of Canton. Hopefully my units are faster and can kick this division out again... the South of China is really interesting...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 46,36

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 7620 troops, 71 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 938

Defending force 47672 troops, 569 guns, 11 vehicles, Assault Value = 906

Japanese ground losses:
26 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Hsinyang

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9203 troops, 70 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1475

Defending force 19419 troops, 211 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 328

Japanese ground losses:
8 casualties reported

Next turn I will order a shock attack at Hsinyang. We should have 1700 assault points there and hopefully be able to kick the 5 or 6 units there out. Only one brigade there and minor units so I really wonder why Hortlund isnīt just retreating out of the base... Will be the 2nd base we take in China...

My honourable opponent has lots of work in real life so our campaign is on hold for a couple of days. Addicted like I am, I hope it wonīt be more than a couple of days as we only did one turn in a week.
