Hey CT,

Just kind of skimming your AAR. To a degree, I feel your pain on bombing vs. a heavily defended base (for months on end). I lose about 40 planes per turn across the map, just in "routine" base suppression" runs. But I accept the mechanics for what they are. Bilbow has been frustrated by the pace of operations, and I'm frustrated by the speed in which things can be repaired. Six in one hand, a half dozen in the other.

That being said, I've found that, esp given the already reduced bomb-loads of planes in CHS (looks like what you're playing), it's often not worth the bother to attack at extended range with Medium bombers, particularly if it's CAP'd. Your heavy bombers can usually fair ok when returning from extended range because of their durability. But in the case of my B-25s which only carry 4x 500# regulary, and 2x 500# at extended range, I ask the question, if it's really that important to drop (only) a pair of 500# bombs on that base 7 hexes away.

But this is where it's actually useful to find the right plane for the job. If you've got a target that is 8 hexes away, can either use
B-25 w/ 2x 500# bombs at extented range or
A-29 w/ 4x 250# bombs at normal range

There's really no difference between the two. But it really makes a difference to whack a target with twice the bombload, so if you actually have the option, you might as well use A-29s to hit the more distant base, and keep the B-25s reigned in to normal range.

-F-

Hi Feinder,

thanks for your comments. Itīs Nikmod, not CHS. But reading your description of CHS, Nikmod seems not to be much different when it comes down to aircraft losses. Allied bombers have a reduced bomb load, they are nearly like Japanese medium bombers now, though they are more durable (which doesnīt help against the super flak though and they die like flies, even when flying at their max altitude). The Boston and Havoc in Nikmod only have a range of 6 while carrying 4 bombs on normal range (4) so the B-25 is better regarding range (8) and bomb load (6) but I canīt use the Mitchells against bases as I donīt accept losing more than a dozen every turn for nearly no result.

Base suppresion seems to not really work in Nikmod nor in CHS for the Allies. At least it seems not to be worth it. Whatīs really frustrating is the fact that even months of bombing with thousands of bombing missions show NO effect at all - as you can see against the (in Hortlundīs terms minimum) garrisson of Kiska.

Hi,
situation looks a bit like "A Flak too far" case study but still very interesting aar to read.

quote:

Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Allied aircraft
B-25J Mitchell x 11

Allied aircraft losses
B-25J Mitchell: 4 destroyed, 3 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
13 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 9

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x B-25J Mitchell bombing at 1000 feet

okay, the test on low level attack showed clearly that this is not the way to go. In the end 7 Mitchells were lost to flak. 7 out of 11...

Maybe it is too early to jump to the conclusion just yet. From what I understand the flak min ceiling is applied only for heaviest AA/DP devices, where "heaviest" is defined by WiTP engine as having a ceiling above 25000 fts. Only for such devices aircrafts flying below 25% of max ceiling are immune to their fire. I don't know the data for Nikmod but for stock it means that only japan 105 AA guns are useless for low flying targets (<9k fts). Otoh the lowest possible altitude is not the way to fly either 'cause effect of light/medium AA guns is of course greatest here...
Anyway usefulness of this tactic would depend on first the changes made in NikMod' device data and then on composition of AA units/devices in each and every particular base. Many Heavy AA Regiments in the base may make it worth one more try at least...

BTW aircrafts flying below 2000 fts are fired at not only by AA/DP devices but by 10-20% of all other squads/teams in base hex (I guess it is to represent hasty fire from small arms of ground troops?). Dunno if it had any influence in case quoted above beacuse to have any effect large numbers seem to be neccessary. Still probably one more reason to not fly so low.
Regards.

good analyzis! In any case, there wonīt be anymore low level base attacks. Mostly we will now attack above the max flak ceiling.

yeah, itīs a pity that itīs always an all or nothing thing in WITP. Those bombs bounce off and do no damage - well they do 2 or 3 sys points perhaps. There should be a routine for non penetrating bomb hits as Iīm sure a BBīs captain would not be happy about 3 or 4 1000lb bombs exploding on his deck or next to the belt armor as this would cause serious damage. We have to live with how itīs modelled, but isnīt that changed in AE?

But this seems to be historically accurate - british needed to use 12000lb bombs to finish BB Tirpitz. Those big babies are not in the game however.
Smaller ones can only destroy some minor guns or radar installations, and kill crew - but can't penetrate main armor.

Iīm not talking about sinking them but a 2000lb bomb exploding on the deck or near the belt armor would cause more than 2 points of sys damage in real life. I would guess that a BB that would be hit by 3 or 4 of those bombs would not be in a state to leave port after the attack. In WITP those BBs leave port with 6 sys dam and shoot up your convoys the night after. Itīs not necessary to sink a ship, it would be enough to make it inoperational. In WITP this isnīt possible with bombs that donīt penetrate the armor - only if you achieve 50x2000lb bomb hits.

I think it'd depend on where the hit was. A 2000 pound HE bomb on, say, a turret roof isn't necessarily going to do much damage. Didn't Maryland take a kamikazi straight into a turret roof and not even lose the turret? I seem to recall the armor got dished, but the turret was still functional.

A hit on or besides a turret can also result in the turret being jammed requiring a month of repair time.

Night Air attack on Rangoon , at 29,34

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIF x 17

No Allied losses

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Beaufighter VIF bombing at 2000 feet

want to train up my Night fighters to use them as long range escort for day attacks. Was shocked to see they attack at 2000 ft, something I usually know but once again forgot. Strange enough there was no flak fire. Didnīt expect hits on the airfield either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CL Achilles
CA Exeter
CA Devonshire
CA Dorsetshire

Japanese ground losses:
545 casualties reported
Guns lost 15

Airbase hits 21
Airbase supply hits 22
Runway hits 166

what we never managed to achieve at Akyab, we achieve with our first bombardment at Andaman. Perhaps we can keep this airfield closed now. We have 96 LB-30 (because instead of B-24, my BG arrive with LB-30 ) and 48 IL-4c ready to fly airattacks every couple of days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 84

No Allied losses

Runway hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:

very bad hit rate...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

45 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 20

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x A-20G Havoc bombing at 25800 feet

but it seems to work to use Havocs on high level attacks. Coupled with 100 Bostons we could keep an airfield closed without having to fear enemy flak. Downside is the low range of 6 though...

We sank several of the big MLs including ML Tsugaru which has a mine capacity of no less than 600 mines! 21 enemy MLs have been confirmed sunk so far, not bad, speaking of mine laying capacity, the enemy has lost over 50% of his capacity already. The TF wasnīt spotted during the day, this could have triggered airattacks by over 100 bombers.

I wonīt complain! Another example of how careless Hortlund is with his ships: ML Hirashima which hit a VH2 at Kendari a couple of days ago was reported sunk today! It sank OFF AMBOINA! So what? The ML hits a mine at Kendari, where it could be disbanded in port immediately and then it sinks off Amboina. Well, I even care about MSW, small AKs, in fact I care about every ship in my arsenal that can be saved (and Iīm the Allied with ten times more ships than the IJN). Heck, I even try to save ships that obviously canīt be saved. Hortlund is of other oppinion! It seems not worth for him to bring damaged ships to the next port where they can be disbanded. I guess this did cost him at least 100 ships of all different types so far.

Naval bombardment of Koepang, at 28,77

Allied Ships

Japanese ground losses:
88 casualties reported

No biggy that the bombardment didnīt do much damage afterwards.

Japanese Ships
AP Kasuga Maru #2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships

Haddock is also retiring home and hits a small AP South East of the Philipines. Those attacks on transit are just luck when a sub stumbles over an enemy convoy, so thatīs not an achievement of mine.

Japanese ground losses:
13 casualties reported

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 19

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 15000 feet

attack on medium height and we encountered no flak fire. Looks like the bombardment hit the base forces really hard. Low hit rate but still we destroyed over a dozen aircraft on the ground. If we can further reduce the attack height then it will surely be possible to supress Andaman.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Gili Gili , at 56,94

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft

93 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 64

Aircraft Attacking:
39 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 26000 feet

this attack came from Cooktown (normal range, compared to Cairns extended range) and we achieve a pretty good hit rate at save height. One B-24 was lost to ops but over 30 are damaged after such an attack. If you want to attack with full strenght you canīt do more than one attack a week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kiska Island , at 92,35

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 37
SBD Dauntless x 40
TBF Avenger x 14
P-39D Airacobra x 17
PV-1 Ventura x 27

Allied aircraft losses
SBD Dauntless: 1 destroyed, 13 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged
PV-1 Ventura: 6 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
120 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 51
Port supply hits 2

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet

no matter how many hits we achieve, no matter how many casualties inflict, no matter how many guns we disable, not even 30.000 bomber attacks can silence flak guns in NM. Those attacks are cancelled now after losing way over 100 aircraft for nothing in return.

I-176 has been patrolling off Derby for a long time when it was hit by a Mariner on nav search. Then, to my complete amazement , Hortlund moved it to the next level 3 port and disbanded it! So, we learn, at least he cares about subs that get hit! But being alerted by the anchor symbol at Koepang we decided to send the Mitchells on "low altitude attacks". Must have been luck to achieve a hit on the sub.

also the Fortresses from Wyndham were ordered on a port strike and they achieve another 500lb bomb hit on the sub which sinks in the afternoon. We lose 2 Mitchells so this attack was surely worth it, even though that I thought we would catch one or two MLs at Koepang so I was pretty surprised to see the sub being anchored there.

the Australian Venturaīs are attacking from Tenimbar. Another strike against a TF near Amboina failed to locate the target. Even with reduced bomb load they are pretty dangerous as they are all 80+ exp. Wonder what this TF is doing there as it seems to be empty. Perhaps picking up some troops or it has unloaded without being spotted earlier.

due to a lot of spotted TFs around Northern New Guinea we have set our B-17 on nav strikes. They go in against a big troop convoy at Namlea and surely this result is one of the "it pisses me off results" for Hortlund! 4 B-17 are lost A2A in the end though...

CA Kako, Bomb hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:

Kako sits at Andaman Island and is attacked by half a dozen high exp Chinese long range bombers. They drop 250kg AP bombs that should penetrate every IJN CAīs armor so I guess this is a hit that did some damage. Isnīt it wonderful to suffer from the synch bug all the time... Surely 30 times+ in this PBEM so far...

One of you are not running the same version or something. I have not once been out of sync with Hortland in all of our PBEM games we have started. Everything matches up correctly everytime.

we have checked it earlier but we are both on the same version. Unfortunately this "feature" of super advance fog of war for the Allied hits me once every two weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 44,67

Japanese Ships
TK San Pedro Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Teruzuki

Allied Ships
SS Pompon

a big TK is hit south of the Philipines! The downside is that it wasnīt loaded with fuel or oil (going probably to Amboina or Sorong to pick up crude oil) and so it has good chances to survive the single torp. This if Hortlund has noticed the hit (undoubtable as he watches the replay) and if Hortlund cares about the torp hit (could be doubtable with the experience Iīve made so far ). Perhaps we will see the TK sinking off Okinawa in two weeks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 78 encounters mine field at Morotai (43,68)

Japanese Ships
ML Saishu, Mine hits 1, on fire

VH2 from a Dutch minelayer sub that is now operating at short range from Darwin. Mines were laid a couple of days ago, so we guessed right that there will be quite some shipping to Morotai. The sub minelayers keep up doing a very good job. Again a big ML hit, again the ship has good chances to survive if Hortlund tries to save it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Andaman Island at 23,34

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
CA Kako, Bomb hits 2

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x IL-4c bombing at 6000 feet

Morning phase: a small strike of the high exp Chinese long range bombers with armor piercing 250kg bombs attacks the convoy at Andaman. Probably a supply convoy with this cruiser as escort. First bomb hit didnīt penetrate the belt but the second was a penetrating deck hit. Still, the heavy cruiser isnīt even on fire.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Andaman Island at 23,34

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
CA Kako, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x IL-4c bombing at 6000 feet

afternoon phase: again a small strike from another bomber squadron (Iīve got 3 squadrons of those high exp bombers there) but this time two hits that penetrate the deck armor. Would be nice to see a combined strike of all my bombers there... Still, the high exp makes it possible to hit the cruiser hard in the end and the ship was left burning and heavily damaged. Recon tells me that it wasnīt split off from the convoy, so if the convoy is still unloading tomorrow the Japanese commander could be badly surprised as a British heavy cruiser squadron will be going in at night to shoot up the transport convoy. If we manage to engage the convoy we should have a clear advantage. I expect to encounter a transport convoy with the now heavily damaged CA Kako, perhaps one or two DDs and a couple of transports. They will be met by 5 British CAs, CLs and half a dozen US DDs as escorts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 48,111

Japanese Ships
SS I-156

Allied Ships
DD Wilson
DD Philip

a TF going North to Townsville stumbles over I-156, one of the recon subs off Australiaīs East coast. What has been surprising is the fact that only two of my DDs tried to engage the sub as there were 6 in the TF...

why am I not surprised that my surface combat TF hits mines? Seen that often enough, but weīre working on destroying the enemyīs minelaying capability anyway... both DDs will make it, will be repaired within two months.

the enemy ships at Andaman fled, so we have to take those two mine hits for no gain in return... once again, the Japanese moved at exactly the right turn...

canīt say that I think this result is okay but I guess itīs easily explained. Guess the Tojos are around 60-65 exp, they are outnumbered, the P-38 is clearly superior to the Tojo but what made this engagement a total massacre was the fact that our fighters bounced the enemy right from the start through nearly the whole engagement. The bounce is what makes a superior aircraft to an Uber weapon and I donīt know if the bounce should have so strong influence. Strong yes, but I donīt know if it isnīt to much of an influence. I really wonder how the game will look like as soon as the Japanese ran out of trained pilots, which canīt take long anymore...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/04/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1009 encounters mine field at Namlea (38,73)

Allied Ships
DD Gwin, Mine hits 1

again, not surprising, but surely annoying! Gwin is one of my Cowboy DD that is harrassing enemy shipping around Timor and New Guinea. Two DDs were sent to Namlea, but guess what! Exactly, the enemy TF moved out exactly this turn. Why did my DDs come late? Because two turns ago a sub that was retiring home ended up in the same hex as my DDs and the sub decided to refuel from the DDs, using up 250 op points from the DDs and therefore they couldnīt go in last turn when the enemy TF still was at Namlea. Oh well... The DD retires with minor damage from the mine hit: 14 sys 3 flt 5 fire

itīs pretty close to suicide to move within half a dozen hexes of my best anti ship bombers. This is the TF I wanted to engage with my DDs at Namlea. Those are all high (80-90) exp bomber crews and even though they operate from Tenimbar, only a level 3 airfield they are deadly to everything uncapped within 13 hexes. I really expect a lot from them as soon as I will have a level 4+ airfield in this region to go ship hunting as they will then not only drop 500lb bombs all the time but 1000lb and 2000lb bombs.

damn it, it seems there are already a couple of those new IJN PCs available. This is surely a dedicated ASW TF that could knock out a lot of my subs. Those PCs have 6-8000 endurance and an ASW value between 6 and 8, later modells even have 11! Seeing those vessels is not good news.

Many of my subs are a dozen hexes around the Philipines and we have at least 20 messages every day about a Betty spotting one of my subs. Rabaulīs Betties (250+) were transferred to Manila (which now has a dark airfield symbol) a week or so ago (6 Betty op losses at one day, and the dark airfield symbol at Rabaul vanished that day). They are now spotting my subs in this region and are there far away from being in danger to be transfered to Timor, Kendari or somewhere near Northern New Guinea to be let lose against an expected invasion. Will be interesting when my invasion suddenly pops up at Gili Gili... at least it then takes one day more to bring them back into position...

the TF that was hit hard yesterday gets completely annihilated today. This should open my opponentīs eyes that it is an absolutely bad idea to move his ships into this region. If it hasnīt, well, that would be good for us! I really love those Venturas in Nikmod. Carrying 6x500lb bombs and a max range of 13.

lol, Hortlund has mined a sea hex between Sulawesi and Northern New Guinea. Donīt know if this happened by accident or he really deliberately mined this hex. Such mine fields are also a threat to his own ships and if he wants to bloccade his own shipping lanes in this region, thatīs fine with me. We have our carriers on transit to Australiaīs North coast to cause some trouble and to draw out the enemy Zeroes and Betties. Hortlund is smart enough not to send in the kitchen sink to lose 50% of his high exp Navy pilots. And he even told me that he wonīt send out his aircraft just to be reduced by my Cap. In fact Iīm surprised by the high number of fighters in the air. This strike came from Thursday Island, donīt know why and what this strike should have achieved. Even the Osacrs were set on nav attack. The enemy lost the complete strike and 6 IJN pilots less in the pool now...

Our sub losses due to air attacks are again increasing. Amazing as they were always quite high anyway. Yesterday S-22 was sunk by a Helen after taking two bomb hits, today of course again a Helen hit O-24 which just had left port a couple of days and now also is in sinking condition. 500 IJA Helens and probably somthing like 20-50% of 300 Betties are out for sub hunting...

a big enemy TF was spotted around Northern Guinea but the Venturas decided not to take off. Also some 30 Zeroes and 9 Tojos were spotted by a recon Ligthning over Amboina. Looks like something is up. Perhaps just a feint to lure a Lightning sweep in that then meets 250 fighters on Cap. But would I not send in 100 Lightnings followed by 200 bombers when our enemy puts such a Cap into the air. I guess at this point I already would... 90% of my ships in range of enemy search aircraft are spotted several times every turn. Also a lot of Betties are spotting my shipping around Darwin now, Hortlund has obviously moved them closer to the front again. It seems heīs concerned about my carriers being around Darwin now.
