Sub attack at 109,33

Japanese Ships
SS RO-33, hits 4

Allied Ships
DD Anderson, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Mustin
DD Russell
DD Cummings

Japanese subs are definetely more effective against warships than our subs have been so far. Anderson will surely make it, will be disbanded at Anchorage next turn. RO-33 received one real hit so it could be in trouble...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 60,87

Japanese Ships
AK Hokkai Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

B-17E Fortress x 14

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Tatuharu Maru, Bomb hits 11, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 1000 feet

1000 ft seems a bit too low, even though my bombers are low exp and only carry 6 bombs in Nikmod (same as a B-25C ). Nevertheless I will go up to 3000 ft in the future as I can already hear my opponent complain - which I would understand. On the other side, I only have 50 4E bombers on the whole map, so the effect isnīt that big...

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Hirokawa Maru, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 2
PC Shonan Maru #1
PC Kyo Maru #13
PC Kyo Maru #12
PC Kyo Maru #11
PC Kyo Maru #2

Allied Ships
SS Stingray, hits 4

Japanese ASW is getting better it seems. Stingray is at 12 sys dam and will retire to India. More and more subs will retire now, as the happy days are over and wear and tear from 2 months in action is now showing itīs effect. We will wait two or three weeks and then start another sub offensive... we expect a Japanese invasion of Koepang anytime soon, so we will need some subs to cause some trouble down there and perhaps also get a shot at something more valuable than a merchant...

Both sides should be able to benefit from hindsight without one side crying foul. It became apparent, even to the proponents of "high altitude precision bombing" that hitting a manuevering ship was a different kettle of fish than hitting a factory. Nikmod appears to provide a downside to low level bombing with both enhanced flak effectiveness and a low number of 4E bombers. If a player chooses to go in at 1000 ft against warships at 1000 ft he'll probably end up with a single digit number of 4E bombers on the map. But if your opp provides what to all appearances are ideal targets (single merchies) then I see no foul in going in low to get hits (can only get one per plane anyway).

Yes, I could agree to what youīre saying. Though I donīt know how my opponent is thinking about the matter. While I donīt think it was smart to send 3 TFs with 3 merchies each to that dot base 6 hexes away from Midway (lev 6 airfield) he could also think that this mission failed because of me setting my bombers to 1000 ft even though thereīs the deadly flak and the reduced bomb load in Nikmod. He didnīt complain to me, but I know bombing altitude is a very sensible thing in PBEM and I donīt know how Hortlund is thinking about. I wouldnīt have thought about it until Iīve seen a 80% hit rate - yes, on already floating wrecks...

we moved our corps to Pakhoi, we will try to take the base tomorrow with a shock attack. There are 2 understrenght bgd (one has just been forced to retreat a couple of days ago) and a couple of construction btn so I expect to fight against lev 2 or 3 forts already. Itīs a wooden hex and the IJA is flying massive ground support missions so itīs a gamble and not sure at all if we can ever take the base back...

the air attacks probably showed their effect. You always need 2000 Chinese assault points if you want to kick 400 Japanese assault points out of the hex.

Hortlund made some very honourable suggestions with this turn. He suggested to see China only as a side show in the future if I would be willing to give up the bases on the railway in Central and South China. IMO this would deprive him of a very good position in 43-45 when he could use all those China Army divs to defend the continent against the invasion coming from India (if he doesnīt knock out India before! ). I donīt know if I should agree as this would be a big present for me. Itīs very honourable but wouldnīt that just deprive Hortlund of a favourable situation later on? Should we just fight it out with the inevitable result to lose Central and South China, perhaps all of China? While we know that itīs too easy to take China (compared to real life when people are arguing it wasnīt possible at all) itīs still not as easy as always spoken about...

no surprise, after Hortlund was able to move in another 3 divs, Hong Kong surrendered... it was a waste to send 15.000 supplies to Hong Kong (and to lose those AKs). The British had no chance after the Chinese accepted the truce and moved back... The brave British fought well in the last months and losing Hong Kong in mid February isnīt that bad...

The Chinese are seen as traitors within the British Army now...

looks like the Japanese av is really shredded. With Singapore surrendering soon (7+ divs attacking there) Hortlund already has impended with another invasion somewhere.

When I look at the combat replay and see how his Southern Area units suffered so far and how many APs he lost so far, then Iīm not really afraid as he is still able to take a lot of territory if he wants but he will completely wreck his troops and shipping, making it just easier for me to go on the offense in late 42 already...

Ground combat at Singapore

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 155026 troops, 1274 guns, 25 vehicles, Assault Value = 2600

we lose mostly support units but supply is decreasing fastly! Still, if we manage to cause 10.000 casualties (mostly disabled I know) this would be equivalent to the assault value of a whole IJA division. We will see...

I bet at least one or two divs from the Singapore attack will go to Koepang where we are further digging in. Here we are even in IJA medium bomber range from Kendari and we fear to see some BB bombardments that will probably take out most of our support units so in the end we wonīt be able to hold the base against a "real" invasion. If he comes piece meal (like in many other invasions earlier on) then he will have problems. But when I look at the latest attacks then he has obviously learnt from his earlier faults...

Nice defensive effort so far. Im amazed at how well your subs are performing. Did you upgrade their commanders or are they just gaining a lot of experience?

Way too risky to ship 72 plane BG or FG by AKs. I always split my 72 plane groups up before shipping them anywhere.

I havenīt changed any of my sub commanders. All I did is what you get told on and on and on on the forum about how to use subs. I used them never alone, I always had preferable more than 5 in surrounding hexes and I moved them - not every one every turn but a lot of them every turn. I havenīt tracked their exp. but when looking at them it doesnīt seem they really gained a lot as they are still in exp ranges that look "normal" for subs. The most important factor so far where my search planes. I had a complete sight on what the IJN was doing and where the TFs are moving, so I was able to hunt down bigger convoys and many times just stumbled over one or two ship TFs. The only thing that isnīt true is the fact that you shouldnīt place your subs at enemy bases. It just doesnīt matter if they sit in a base hex or in a deep water hex. It doesnīt even matter if they are spotted on and on and on. Perhaps the difference is 10% but not more. Seeing this with my subs and in my other game as the Japanese as well.

I always forget about splitting my big BG before loading them on AKs so at the moment there are full groups moving around on single AKs...

unfortunately Hortlund is unloading more troops at Thursday Island. This makes my plan to build up the base in the near future obsolete. I wanted to use this base as a staging point for further attacks on New Guinea with PM being the first target.
