oh man. All I can say is that I already regret having started a game that´s going with "the usual house rules"... I´m used to stacking limits and always had them in EVERY game I had. The funny thing is that once again I can only wonder what some players feel what is gamey and what is not gamey. Placing 500 aircraft at an airfield that has room for 200 isn´t gamey at all, no no... But me, moving 4 Chinese corps in China 60 miles South on day one is super gamey...

grumble, grumble... never ever start a game again that hasn´t each and every house rule pointed out BEFORE starting the campaign...

the mega strike from last turn grew into a super mega strike this turn... 465 attacking aircraft from a level 4 airfield. If you think about the penalty than there must be something like 700 ??? aircraft?? pfffff... We now have the house rule about stacking limits of af size x 50 + 10% max.

The penalty you take from overstacking are a joke. Only a dozen bombers were lost so what´s about the op losses?? Glad AE will change that... What really concerns me is the fact that my flak is doing nothing and I thought this would be a real dangerous flak base... Half a dozen base forces there with 60+ flak guns but we do no damage to bombers coming in at 11.000 ft. Really concerning...

Hortlund keeps flying LRCAP (7 hexes!!) from Kendari. We lose another 8 bombers today and the IJN?? .... loses one Zero... Can someone explain me how Hortlund is doing this? When I play the Japanese I lose half a dozen aircraft just from transferring them unfatigued to a base 3 hexes away and Hortlund is flying LRCAP with 81 Zeroes day after day, having a dozen Zeroes damaged by the bombers and loses 1 plane?? I don´t get it...

this just had to happen sooner of later. I´ve seen 100+ fighters at Mandalay for days now and was prepared to see them flying LRCAP over Akyab. But I just can´t stop doing training raids because in Nikmod the Allied squadrons have an average exp of something like 50... 50 means completely trash in WITP. I even get replacement pilots (US pilots!!!) that are below 50. And therefore the bombers can´t hit anything (look at my airfield / port attacks, not even talking about the 50 Hudsons achieving 2 hits on the damaged CVEs). It just doesn´t matter if I use P-40s or Wirraways, they all are sitting ducks with pilots in the low 50s when facing Oscars with pilots in the high 70s or low 80s. I have no problem to see the IJA / IJN somewhat more exp than the Allied at start of the war but I really think that Nik overdid it here when the average Japanese pilot has 25 or even 30 points more exp than a USAAF pilot... and I´m not even taking the losses my Allied opponent Swift had to take so far in A2A. The A2A ratio in my game against Swift is 10:1 in favour of the Japanese...

with 1500 Japanese pilots in the pool I have to lose 10.000 planes first before the Japanese pool will be empty (when I multiply the kill rate of 7:1 for Oscars against the "normal" US pilot in a P-40 which is the best Allied plane at the moment). Means I just have to lose the P-40 replacement of 200 months... lol With an empty pilot pool the Japanese get pilots that are the same exp than a US pilot if the Japanese pilot is doing 15 training bombing raids... oh well... I have around 150 US and British fighters that are in the low 70s now and I will use them in the near future, then we will see if it is worth it. They reached this exp after doing 40 training missions on average, which only was possible because the Japanese weren´t interferring with those raids so far...

I lost around 30 aircraft today... really hard if you get absolute rookie pilots which then have to face 500 clones of Erich Hartmann in at least equally good aircraft... IMO an exp difference of 25 is too much and I can´t really see a reason for such a high difference...

no problem being in range of dozens of Allied bombers with 1 Zero on Cap when you know that the Allied pilots are in reality only truck drivers... in the meantime you can pick off shipping that felt safe while being under an LBA umbrella... just propagande for the sailors...

with the number of flak guns at Koepang it still isn´t as effective as I´ve thought before as I didn´t expect raids below 15.000 ft to be worth it. Still, today the Japanese lose 9 bombers to flak and 6 to ops. Good result, only one Zero is lost to ops...

we have moved 3x8 Bostons to Koepang as the airfield was medium damaged (airbase is heavily damaged) but while launching from the base, most bombers failed to locate their targets. One hit on a DD with a 500lb bomb is all we get. Moving out the bombers as the Japanese airforce will surely be back with more strikes. It´s a cat and mouse play now, we´re moving in a couple of bombers when the damage on the runway allows it, but if they don´t launch against naval targets then they get torched on the ground. Hortlund obviously is preparing his invasion as he sent at least 3 ASW TFs into the are to clear it from my subs. Why sending ASW TFs if you won´t move into the area... I expect to see BBs/CAs soon to nuke Koepang, but as long as I have subs in the area (and I flooded it with subs) Hortlund could be scared. Perhaps he has some respect of my subs with the sinkings they achieved so far....

my completely out of supply troops at Manila wreck havoc with the attacking Japanese IJA divisions... the urban bonus is a killer, makes troops without ammo absolutely combat effective... With all the failed attacks here so far I really wonder why Hortlund isn´t seriously reinforcing Manila. It does not make sense to wreck 1500 assault points until only 800 are left and then bring in another 800 to wreck them again. With this attack Hortlund has lost (disabled) around 400 assault points. Assault points worth another IJA division. My opponent is always speaking about where he could move after Manila and Koepang is taken but when I look at the assault values of the IJA divs in the combat replay than I´m not really scared as many of them already have lost 100-200+ assault points due to failed attacks... It would be real fun if he would go for India... I really doubt it...

interesting turn...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/09/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 60

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 62
CW-22 Falcon x 1
P-40E Warhawk x 70

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 26 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb: 11 destroyed, 38 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 2 destroyed, 38 damaged

we decided to mass our US/British fighters and fighter bombers at Imphal, a level 3 base a couple of hexes North of Mandalay. After one turn of rest we ordered a massive sweep to Mandalay to meet the Japanese aces... As you can see, the Japanese achieved far more hits on our aircraft. 89:34 but with only 2x12,7mm MGs the Oscars are mostly only able to take down one of our heavily armoured fighters/fighter bombers when hitting with a long burst from behind. The Hurricane pilots were on average 8 points higher exp than the P-40 pilots but the P-40 proved to be a far superior plane than the Hurricane, so 70% of the kills went to the P-40s while suffering fewer losses. The combat started with a bounce for the Oscars when our aircraft had NO chance at all followed by an engagement where noone had an advantage with our aircraft not achieving much but getting damaged. Then we had a couple of phases where our fighter groups got the bounce and while the Hurricanes still had a hard time, our P-40s really took a toll on the Oscars. 5 P-40s were lost in the end but they probably took down 15 Oscars while the Hurricanes lost 11 aircraft for taking down a dozen Oscars. This engagement was important for us to examine if we can stand a fight against the superior IJAAF pilots if we outnumber the defenders and can determine the conditions. So the conclusion is that it is possible, even though in reality we can´t afford to lose 20 fighters in one day, while the Japanese have no problem to reequip their sentais. Our pools are empty again of course and we had to replace the pilots lost with rubbish flyboys in the low 50s again. Losing a British pilot is a disaster, as we only get 30 per month. If used in numbers and on a sweep the P-40 is clearly the better plane compared to the Oscar because it´s very hard to down for the undergunned Japanese fighter and with a gun value of 12 it makes a hit on a fragile Japanese fighter mostly a kill. So when the pilots are equal experienced (I would guess my P-40 pilots are on average 15 points less exp than the Oscar pilots) than the P-40 will eat the Oscars for breakfast. While the Oscar will still achieve more hits, the P-40 will clealy win in kills...

All in all this attack is seen as a victory in the air and will boost our morale...

after our sweep in the morning we fly an attack against the airfield to take out damaged and grounded IJA fighters. This is nearly all we´ve got regarding bombers, even Chinese bombers joined the attack as they carry 5 times the number of bombs than a British bomber. Our BEST squadron (on paper), the AVG, flew close escort for our bombers and once again the AVG proved to be not worth it´s reputation. The Tomahawks are shot to pieces by the Oscars and we lose 7 Tomahawks for no Oscar lost A2A. At the moment the AVG has an average exp of 73 so I don´t understand why they are performing sooo bad. Okay, they were on escort but the Oscars were disrupted due to the former sweep. Also the hit rate on the airfield was really disappointing. We´ve been flying recon with Dutch recon planes for a long time now and the bomber pilots are on average in the high 60s exp. What was impressing was the flak fire the Japanese put into the air. When I look at what I have at Koepang and that my flak should be more effective than the Japanese, then they must have half of all their flak guns stationed at Mandalay. It´s a wonder that we lost only 2 bombers to flak... Recon showed an airfield damage of 20 afterwards...

So the plan for the next couple of weeks is to try to further do training attacks to get our pilots in the mid 70s range. In May the British are allowed to upgrade, this will bring us around 100 Hurricanes more (but with pilots in the high 50s) but the most important fact will be the upgrade of the obsolete Blenheims to Wellingtons. 30 Wellingtons have been produced per month since the start of the war and we will be able to upgrade all our British bombers to Wellingtons in May. They carry 9x500lb bombs compared to the Blenheim with 2x500lb bombs, have about the same range, have a higher durability and a better defensive armament. So all in all a clearly superior aircraft. With the Wellingtons we will drop 5 times more bombs than now. Coupled with the 48 B-25c in India we should be able to bring in a nice number of bombs to the targets Burma.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-46-II Dinah: 1 destroyed

this shows up in the combat report because 14 Zeroes were over Koepang flying LRCAP...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 102,99

Japanese Ships
SS I-1, hits 5, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Kane
DD Humphreys
DD Schley

even though this sub was spotted several times and even attacked by our DDs (one real hit last turn) Hortlund hasn´t moved it. He seems to be very careless with his subs, this serves me good. Would he move them more often, then he wouldn´t have lost a single sub so far as my ASW efforts have been very poor. But when we get 10 times the chance then even our poor performing DDs are able to sink one. 3 real hits and 2 near misses and I-1 is confirmed sunk with the captain going down with her...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wuchow

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 13511 troops, 165 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 110

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 121 - adjusted assault: 123

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 123 to 1 (fort level 5)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Wuchow base !!!

next abandoned Chinese base is lost. This hurts us, Wuchow generated 300 auto supply a turn... with our agreement of taking the Chinese units back from the rail we lose around 1200 supplies a day. This doesn´t make the bad supply situation in China nowhere better...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9227 troops, 294 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1216

Defending force 60580 troops, 438 guns, 56 vehicles, Assault Value = 1323

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported

As you can see, the Japanese really suffered from their attack last turn. Before the shock attack their assault value was nearly 1800!!!! My units are down to perhaps 5% of their needed supply so in fact I should offer Hortlund my surrender in the Philipines, move the troops to Clark that he should abandon, then let him take Manila and attack me at Clark where my troops would immediately surrender. Even though he didn´t really bring sufficient forces so far, I think it would just be fair to offer a capitualtion when there´s no or nearly no supply left, just to compensate the bad game design when it comes down to such fights. No question, combat in urban areas is bloody but as soon as there´s no supply left the defender just has to surrender. Or at least he should not be able to disable assault values equal to a whole IJA division in one day... we will see how it will go on...

there´s a disbanded ship spotted at Dutch Harbour, but only 7 out of 32 bombers take off (after doing nothing for a week) and we hit... nothing... heavy flak fire over the base... we stop any further attacks in the North, just not worth it...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/11/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 149 encounters mine field at Soerabaja (22,65)

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 2
PC Shonan Maru #1
PC Kyo Maru #13
PC Kyo Maru #11

Hortlund hasn´t made an attempt to send a couple of MSWs and his ships are still encountering mines at Soerabaja. But instead of seeing one hit a mine they destroy them... so in some way they do hit them...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 14 encounters mine field at Soerabaja (22,65)

Japanese Ships
APD APD-36
DD Oboro

it would be great to see a precious APD hit a mine and sink in port... I have the feeling that there must be a lot of shipping in the Soerabaja area. Probably preparing for an invasion of Koepang. Today a Jake spotted an Allied sub around Koepang but the sub was 10 hexes away from the next Japanese base with aircrafts so this means a Japanese ship carrying the Jake must be 6 hexes away from the sub - means this ship is 8 hexes away from Koepang now. Probably a big IJN bombardment force on the way to Koepang which will 95% sure nuke the base after weeks of recon... perhaps a sub gets a shot at an IJN capital ship, this could change Hortlunds plans perhaps...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Myitkyina , at 36,28

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 26

No Allied losses

Warhawks still set on sweep by accident... luckily they were moved out of Imphal as they would have swept Mandalay instead and would have met nearly 100 IJA/IJN fighters on Cap. Seeing such a high cap on a lev 3 airfield is amazing as I most times nearly need 200 fighters to have a cap of 100...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Myitkyina , at 36,28

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 24

No Allied losses

Runway hits 8

Aircraft Attacking:
21 x P-39D Airacobra bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Zuid Garrison Battalion, at 18,56

Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 32
Ki-15 Babs x 2

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
41 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby Defense Brigade, at 54,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 14
Ki-48 Lily x 36

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
58 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet

Lilies at PM now for training... will take a long time until my units there will be wiped out...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9316 troops, 296 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1273

Defending force 60070 troops, 427 guns, 52 vehicles, Assault Value = 1311

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/12/42

The REAL battle for Koepang begins...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 26,77

Japanese Ships
DD Asagao
DD Yakaze
DD Isokaze

Allied Ships
SS Seawolf

At this time a TF of unknown strength moves in to Koepang from the WEST... Of course I expected the enemy coming from the North or North East. Two subs were in the way of this TF and one is attacked by 3 DDs without success though...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and we start off the battle with a success...

Sub attack at 26,75

Japanese Ships
DD Hamakaze, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze
DD Urakaze
DD Shiranuhi
DD Kagero
DD Akigumo

Allied Ships
SS S-27, hits 3

This is a big TF coming from the North and it has to move through hexes in which we have subs on station. S-27 fires a salvo of 4 MK10 torps and Hamakaze is struck by two... Hamakaze didn´t sink but I don´t expect her to live much longer... S-27 in return receives 3 near misses, she ends up with 10 sys damage at the end of the day... those attacks make me hope that Hortlund will soon start to think it won´t be worth bringing his BBs in danger of sub attacks... all other ships can be hurt by my airforce if they come in range, but the BBs are bomb prove. I moved 8 obsolete Dutch torp bombers to Koepang this turn...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Myitkyina , at 36,28

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 62
P-40E Warhawk x 29

No Allied losses

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 12

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Myitkyina , at 36,28

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 24

No Allied losses

Runway hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:
21 x P-39D Airacobra bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 34
Ki-21 Sally x 40
Ki-46-II Dinah x 8

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 24 damaged

Allied ground losses:
27 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 22

Aircraft Attacking:
16 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

wonder why those strikes are getting smaller and smaller... will Hortlund rely on his naval forces?? 5 Sallies and 2 Zeroes are lost in this attack... the number of lost Japanese aircraft over Koepang is going up steadily...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Zuid Garrison Battalion, at 18,56

Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 32
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1
Ki-15 Babs x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
10 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby Defense Brigade, at 54,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 15
Ki-48 Lily x 48

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
53 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Koepang, at 28,77 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

2 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
CL Tama
CA Furutaka
CA Aoba
BB Hyuga
BB Ise
BB Yamato <-------------------- YAMATO!!!!! date is 3/12/42... I´m impressed...BB Mutsu
BB Nagato

Allied ground losses:
838 casualties reported
Guns lost 8
Vehicles lost 8

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 14
Port hits 6
Port supply hits 3

more than half of the IJN BBs are doing a bombardment at daylight... wonder why? We come away with relatively few casualties, at least fewer than we expected...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 26,75

Japanese Ships
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze
DD Urakaze
DD Shiranuhi
DD Kagero
DD Akigumo

Allied Ships
SS S-27

the succesful S-27 is attacked again but she comes away unharmed... wonder what this TF consists of... KB?? Another bombardment TF? Can´t be a pure ASW TF, max number of ASW ships would be 6...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9324 troops, 297 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1314

Defending force 59729 troops, 422 guns, 51 vehicles, Assault Value = 1303

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported

B-25C Mitchell: 2 destroyed, 9 damaged

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
47 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 16000 feet

16.000 ft but the flak is as heavy as I would attack at 2.000 ft it seems... 4 Mitchels are lost... will be tough to try to close airfields in Nikmod... 1 airbase and 1 airfield hit for 4 bombers lost isn´t encouraging...

torps fail to detonate... Hortlund stated it would be hard for my subs to be succesful as they are spotted and even attacked every turn. Well, I move them every turn and they are still attacking. It´s just bad luck for me or luck for him if the torps miss or fail to detonate... So this turn he was lucky with both attacks failing...

Japanese ground losses:

the combat replay shows the 56th division with an assault value of around 250. We will see how big the av will grow but as it is now the single division won´t have a chance to take the base...

what´s wrong with that game?????? Why the hell are those bombers now attacking the port of Akyab when they are set to nav attack as primary mission???????? They should attack this big TF just 2 hexes West of Akyab... but hey, while we have seen only small strikes on the TF, the port is attacked by ALL available bombers... with this attack for nothing my bombers accumulated another 10 points of fatigue...

looks like Hortlund felt save due to our non existent CD gunfire so far and wanted to achieve more hits on my base... He achieved more hits, but this time our 6 inch CD guns fired back. A dozen is still ready to take on the fight. Two DDs sank this turn but I think that all 5 DDs are write offs... Means with the one that was sunk due to a sub attack, Hortlund already has lost 6 DDs in his Koepang adventure. Another DD was hit by 2 500lb bombs today...

But isn´t it amazing that the Yamato BB group already does another bombardment? They must have picked up 14, 16 and 18 inch shells somewhere at a secret IJN jungle base that has those shells available. If we will face BB bombardments nearly daily in the near future than perhaps we have to talk about min port size to replenish BB/CA ammo but we´ll see...

even though we are nearly out of supply (2500 at Manila) Hortlund doesn´t have to wonder why he always fails... He hasn´t brought enough force with any of his attacks so far. All he´s doing all the time is to bring in one or two new divisions to wreck them with attacks with far insufficient force... He should have brought in more troops, wait until he really has enough and then attack... if he wants to take Manila then he shouldn´t just have thrown 2 divs at Koepang... with failed attacks due to insufficient force in the past in Malaya, at Hong Kong and on Java he does the same error in the Philipines now too...

we will see BB bombardments daily... they hit nothing as they used up all their ammo last turn already... Hortlund complained about the uselessness of his BBs and I really have to laugh... just because he hasn´t achieved 10.000 casualties with his first attack... as said, those BBs are out of ammo, still he complains... I won´t tell him that ALL support troops at the base are COMPLETELY wrecked and I think I have 6 base forces there - all wrecked... if he´s smart he can see that anyway when flak is doing nothing...

at the moment I think we are completely disagreeing on many things as all I´m doing seems to be gamey but nothing he does is gamey... I think I really have problems doing PBEMs...

example: he had 600 aircraft at a level 4 base... for me gamey, not for him... my "offensive" in China... for him gamey, not for me...

the perfect example where EVERY more or less experienced PBEM player should see that his BBs wrecked havoc with their bombardments... the Kates attack at 11.000 ft, there are 6 Allied base forces with dozens of AA guns and it´s NIKMOD where flak is a killer, but still the Kates don´t suffer at all... why on earth would someone with at least a little experience think that the bombardments weren´t working???

I could write until the end of the day what I think about this attack... 90% of the fighter bombers and 100% of the bombers stayed home... then my strike gets butchered because I field 60 exp. (those are the ones that were doing training for months) and I face the 80 exp. Japanese super pilots...

Nik overdid it, he just overdid it making the Allied airforce useless for years with replacement pilots that are even coming in BELOW 50... I replaced what I could replace this turn and I got 8!!!!!! pilots that were BELOW 50... sorry but that´s BS... but yeah, it´s less bloody... of course it is, I only get 50% of the replacements in stock, so I can only lose 50%... means it´s just half as bloody as stock...

the next strike... we lose 89 aircraft today for ONE lousy bomb hit on an AP... wow great working mod... while I think the mod "would" or "could" work good with the adjustments made in durability, speed, armor,.... of the planes, it just can´t work if you REDUCE the bomb load AND give the Allied pilots all over the map somewhere in the low 50s with replacement pilots that can come in BELOW 50. But in return the Japanese get 1500 replacement pilots in the pool and untrained (when the pool is empty) somewhere in the high 30s which can be trained to 50 also just after doing 15 training runs...

reduced bomb load AND reduced ALLIED (only) exp results in turns like this... but you won´t see that again for long as the REDUCED aircraft replacement (Allied) also won´t let me do this again for at least a month... I lost my fighter replacement of 5 weeks today... yeah, less bloody... and I still seem to be doing good, as in my other NM game where I´m the Japanese we´re one month ahead and I´m 10:1 leading in A2A kills...

thanks that my stock game lasted loooooonger than every modded game I have had so far...

today, we lost the fighter production of over a month... we lost 50+ pilots that have been trained for 2 months+, so we will get pilots that are in the low 50s or even BELOW 50, which means they will perform even worse... It won´t help when I get SUPER planes later when my pilots are in the 50s but the Japanese flying Tojos then will be in the 80s... they will get 200 Tojos and I will get 30 P38 and 50 obsolete P-40s...

and then in Hortlund´s oppinion I shouldn´t set my bombers to nav attack 3.000 ft... one bomb hit today... and a whopping number of 62!!!!!! B-17E on the WHOLE map...

well, no... I had my Hurricanes at 26000 ft so my P-40s were escorting at 29.000ft. Forget about the alt... It doesn´t matter at all regarding the bounce... the bounce in the game is not what the bounce was in real life...

with the 50 exp pilots and the reduced bomb load I will go in at 1000 ft in the future... it doesn´t matter, the best Allied fighters until the Corsair arrives are no match for Oscars, Zeroes and soon Tojos when the Allied are in the 50s and the Japanese in the high 70s or 80s...

Aircraft Attacking:

I was so upset about losing 89 aircraft last turn for one f***ing bomb hit that I forgot to set my Hurricanes to training. The amazing and again ridicoulos fact is that if you set all your bombers to nav attack 100% nav search then your bombers still launch for a nav attack... 100% for the developers of WITP isn´t what 100% is for the rest of the world... Learnt something new after 3 years... if you want ALL your bombers to do nav search, set them to NAV SEARCH. nav attack with 100% search isn´t what do think it is...

Port supply hits 4

and here´s the next BB bombardment already... I bet the BBs replenish at the lev 4 port of Kendari as they are coming in again at no time... I think Hortlund will be doing those in and out attacks as long as it will take until Koepang will surrender... well, we´re just having different oppinions about what should be done and what not... as long he uses unlimited ship artillery attacks I will decrease my bombing alt. With the difference that his attacks are obviously not failing while our bombers don´t score...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9264 troops, 295 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1470

Defending force 56298 troops, 324 guns, 48 vehicles, Assault Value = 1202

Allied ground losses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Koepang

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 12955 troops, 117 guns, 17 vehicles, Assault Value = 344

Defending force 33901 troops, 288 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 652

Japanese ground losses:
19 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

If you think about the fact that the Japanese BBs are disabling 15%+ of the whole garrison on Koepang with their bombardment runs every turn then why should Hortlund complain about them being not effective? 1900 BB casualties this turn alone and only 13.000 troops left defending the base... very unefficient...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 26,74

Japanese Ships

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 30,76

Japanese Ships
APD APD-2
APD APD-1
DD Asagumo
DD Yamagumo
DD Hatsukaze

Allied Ships
SS Gudgeon, hits 4

torps miss... one real hit... the next sub that is out of action... The losses aren´t severe so far but we see a LOT of damaged subs pretty fast... Hortlund uses his Vals for ASW or naval search and they are attacking every turn... this with the hits due to ASW assets reduces our sub force in the area... but we will bring in more and if we will hit with every third attack then we will hit a high value target sooner or later... Hortlund is so confident that he parked KB (or what´s there from KB) in the base hex of Koepang...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-46-II Dinah x 2

No Japanese losses

49 Zeroes are reported on Cap over Koepang. 3 Zeroes lost to ops today so I guess there are a lot of the 100+ Zeroes from Kendari flying LRCAP also... makes it impossible to use my C-47 at the moment... and of course makes it impossible to use my bombers against KB...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Zuid Garrison Battalion, at 18,56

Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 31
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1
Ki-15 Babs x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
12 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
31 x Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Sparrow Force Battalion, at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 26
B5N Kate x 44

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 1 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied ground losses:
116 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x B5N Kate bombing at 11000 feet

Hortlund knows that our carriers are far away so he uses his Kates for ground attacks and his Vals for ASW. The Kates coupled with more BB bombardments in one week here than in the whole war in real life will make the base fall soon I guess. And I´m sure the BBs will be back in three turns again as they will replenish at Kendari next turn... Then we will see BB bombardment number 9 and 10... I will use dozens of slow BBs in my offensive in a year that will replenish at lev 4 ports and will bomb the Japanese to dust... I´m the one that has three times as many BBs as the Japanese so the Japanese will see not 7 BB bombardments a week but 21!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 30th Australian Brigade, at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13
B5N Kate x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 8 damaged

Allied ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x B5N Kate bombing at 11000 feet

due to the naval bombardments ALL our base forces have lost between 90 and 95% of their flak guns... and I can´t figure out why my opponent insists that the naval bombardments don´t do any damage... I wonder how he´s reading the combat reports...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

No Japanese losses

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Koepang at 28,77

Japanese Ships
APD APD-38
APD APD-34
DD Shirayuki
DD Inazuma
DD Ikazuchi

Allied Ships
SS Triton, hits 3

Triton takes another 3 near misses but can stay in the area...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 20 troops unloading over beach at Andaman Island, 23,34

Japanese ground losses:
240 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Andaman Island

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 3512 troops, 25 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 108

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 208 - adjusted assault: 298

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 298 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Andaman Island base !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Wirraway: 1 destroyed

pretty much overkill I would say to take an empty base. Dozens of Japanese recon flights should have shown that the base is emtpy...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 9257 troops, 295 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1380

Defending force 55925 troops, 317 guns, 47 vehicles, Assault Value = 1202

Allied ground losses:
99 casualties reported

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/20/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Koepang at 28,77

Japanese Ships
BB Hiei
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze
DD Urakaze
DD Shiranuhi
DD Kagero

Allied Ships
SS O21, hits 2

torps miss... salvo of 4 torps... BB Yamashiro hit by dud Mk14s and now BB Hiei missed... Hortlund is really stretching the luck of his battlewaggons and I stay unlucky. Should I expect the next attack to be an exploding hit?? 2 near misses on O21 in return...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Day Air attack on 2nd Australian Cavalry Division, at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 36
B5N Kate x 66

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 2 damaged

Allied ground losses:
124 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x B5N Kate bombing at 11000 feet

with nearly no flak guns left due to the never ending BB bombardments the Kates are operating without danger of being shot down...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 2nd Australian Cavalry Division, at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 24
Ki-46-II Dinah x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 5 damaged

Allied ground losses:
20 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

since the start of the BB bombardments and the aerial attacks our assault value at the base has decreased by nearly 100!!!! points... means not the 2 enemy divisions will win the battle but the BBs are responsible for it... and in expected 2 turns the next 5 BBs are doing bombardment number 9... while I´m being dumb to bring troops to Koepang - because I know that the naval bombardments alone can easily annihilate such a base - I find it still, let´s say strange, to lose the base just because those BBs are shuttling in and out every couple of days replenishing at Kendari to unload their ammo on Koepang... in the game a complete Sir Robin defense is the best thing, there´s no doubt. After that you come back with full strenght and then do it like my opponent is doing it now. Wonder what Hortlund would tell me if he sees 9 BB bombardments in a couple of weeks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lark Force Battalion, at 54,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 2
Ki-48 Lily x 15

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:

Ki-49 Helen: 3 damaged

Allied ground losses:
36 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

Hortlund still seems to be flying LRCAP as he lost 5 Zeroes to ops today... at least one positive aspect of my stand at Koepang...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on No. 112 RAN Base Force, at 54,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13
Ki-48 Lily x 23

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
43 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet
15 x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

this is BB naval bombardment NUMBER 10... why is Steve talking about anything being gamey? with no specific house rule about replenishing BBs / CAs he goes in and out dozens of times... as long as it will take to kill ALL troops at Koepang with BB bombardments only... very realistic... oh boy...

even if we don´t have specific house rules, I have never seen any of my opponents doing a dozen bombardments (probably more if it takes longer to take the base) while replenishing at a level 4 port just 8 hexes away... if he wants to do unlimited BB bombardments (I wouldn´t have a problem with that) then he should replenish his BBs / CAs at Soerabaja that has a level 8 or 9 port. But that´s just my oppinion...

hope my opponent gets upset because he hasn´t yet been able to wipe out the base... but hey, this will just result in another dozen BB bombardments... next turn we have a surprise for our opponent at Koepang. I bet it won´t work but I still hope... then he perhaps gets the deserved bill for his never ending naval bombardments...

this is the surprise I mentioned last turn! I was able to move in nearly all of the Royal Navy unspotted to 4 hexes off Koepang. Then of course the lucky guy strikes again! BAD WEATHER in the morning! There was never bad weather the last 2 months in this area, the weather forecast was partly cloudy... KB reacts one hex towards us, stays under a cloud, we don´t react and stay under a cloud. End of the morning phase... In the afternoon, no carrier TF reacts but we are not clouded anymore while KB stays under a cloud. Guess what!! No, we are not attacking the enemy carriers with full strenght, NO, we attack with a half hearted attack the most agile targets we could find, means fast DDs and manage to hit ONE with a torp.

All the Kates were set to ground attack all the last turns! Many Vals were on nav search or ASW and they couldn´t hurt our armored Brit carriers anyway. We have 6500 AA value in the TF with lots of BBs that could soak up damage! We manage to move in unspotted! No bad weather for weeks. Then, Hortlund comes away with a single torp hit on a DD... Is he lucky or am I unlucky? Or both? Or is it just the not working, f****ing sh*t "advanced weather" that manages to create thunderstorms in the dessert if you want to launch airstrikes??

As a result, we will see all of KBs bombers on nav attack of course next turn and our CV TF sunk probably... well done... our only hope is that we are now moving in a direction that Hortlund could perhaps missgues...
