This is a new beginning to my career association. GM Larry MacPhail has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to revamp the Dodger lineup and improve Ebbets Field. We have a team that can challenge for the NL pennant and perhaps win the World Series.

This team has an interesting cast of characters. A potential star named Pete Reiser plays CF. There's a fresh-faced SS named Pee Wee Reese and his backup, a loudmouth named Leo Durocher. Durocher wants to manage the team himself, but I've successfully outmanuevered him, so far. Leo the Lip will soon find himself traded away, mark my words.

The pitching staff has some hard-throwing and hard-drinking guys like Kirby Higbe and Hugh Casey. We also have veteran Whitlow Wyatt, who is the staff ace.

My job is to keep these guys in line and lead them to a championship. The other league has a couple of good teams, but we will be keeping an eye on the "Bronx Bombers", the Yankees.

So, even before the season started, I talked MacPhail (I played on his known drinking habits) into trading Durocher and P Mace Brown to the Giants in exchange for RP Johnny Wittig and minor-leaguer Bryan Montgomery.

Durocher was sent packing even before MacPhail woke up the next day.

Next, I made a deal with Branch Rickey, the GM of the Cardinals: in exchange for 38-year-old P Curt Davis, we got a promising 21-year-old RF. His name is Stan Musial.

The Musial deal made Dixie Walker expendable, so we shipped him to the Red Sox and got a pitching prospect: 22-year-old LHP Earl Johnson.

I think we are ready.

Washington, Monday, April 14, 1941: In the season opener, the Yankees shutout the Senators 1-0.

Brooklyn, April 15: Opening day vs the Giants. The score was tied 1-1 in the 8th when Billy Herman hit a 1-out single, scoring Joe Medwick from 2nd. Mickey Owen followed up with a 2-out single that scored Stan Musial from 3rd. Dodgers, 3-1. Wyatt retired the side in the 9th, and got the CG victory over Cliff Melton, allowing 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5.

Wednesday, April 16: Kirby Higbe gives up the 1st HR of the year as Mel Ott hit a 2-run shot in the 3rd. Giants, 2-0. Hig was pulled in the 8th, and Newt Kimball relieved him. Didn't matter to leadoff batter Ott, though, as he slammed a solo HR to RF. 3-0, Giants.

Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs. Babe Phelps, hitting for Kimball, singles and scores Lavagetto from 2nd. 3-1. Alex Kampouris pinch runs for Phelps. Reese provides the anticlimax as he flies out to deep left. Hal Schumacher gets the CG win, but at least didn't get the shutout.

President Roosevelt signed an executive order exempting professional athletes from selective service (i.e., the draft). However, these athletes are free to voluntarily give up this exemption. How this will play out remains to be seen, as the US is not directly involved in the War in Europe.

Thursday, April 17. Hugh Casey vs lefty Carl Hubbell. In the top of the 3rd, Casey gave up a solo HR to Johnny Rucker. It was the first hit he allowed in the game.

4th inning. With 2 out and the bases loaded, Casey gives up a double to Burgess Whitehead. 2 runs score. The Giants take a 3-0 lead.

Bottom of the 4th. Medwick hits a leadoff triple! Camilli hits a sac fly to left. It's 3-1. Billy Herman follows with a double. Stan Musial triples! Herman scores. 3-2. Hubbell recovers his control enough to retire the next two batters.

Bottom of the 7th. Lavagetto and Owen both single. Joe Vosmik hits for Casey, and flies to left. Lavagetto dashes for 3rd and makes it. Reese flies to Ott, and Cookie takes off for home. Nothing doing -- Ott throws him out at the plate.

Bottom of the 9th. Here we go. Herman walks, and Musial doubles. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs. Lavagetto singles, and Herman scores! Tie game. Musial gets thrown out at 3rd, but Cookie advances to 2nd. Hubbell is still on the mound. Owen grounds out, and Lavagetto advances to 3rd. Pinch-hitter Jimmy Wasdell flies out. We go to extra innings.

Bottom of the 10th. Hubbell, amazingly, is still in the game. With 2 outs, Joe Medwick triples. Hubbell then strikes out Dolph Camilli -- unbelievable.

Bottom of the 11th. Bill McGee relieved Hubbell, and promptly lost the game. Johnny Wittig was awarded the victory in the Dodgers' 4-3 win.

Boston, Friday April 18: Luke Hamlin vs Dick Errickson. The Dodgers strike quickly in the 1st, taking a 3-0 lead. The Braves respond with one run in the bottom of the 3rd. Brooklyn scores again in the 4th. In the 7th, Dolph Camilli hits a 3-run homer! 7-1, Dodgers. That one knocks Errickson out of the game. In comes Johnny Hutchings.

In the 8th, Owen hits a solo shot off of Hutchings. 8-1. Hamlin loads up the bases in the bottom of the ining, but only gives up one run. It's 8-2, and Luke will be hard-pressed to tough it out in the 9th. He does it, retiring the side with three straight fly-outs.

Hamlin pitches a CG and wins 8-2. Errickson takes the loss.

Saturday, April 19. A double-header.

Game 1. Whitt Wyatt vs Jim Tobin. Babe Phelps starts at C, giving Mickey Owen a day off. Wyatt has a rough outing, giving up 3 runs, and is removed in the 6th.

Newt Kimball takes the mound, and gives up a solo HR to Bama Rowell. 4-0, Braves.

Camilli prevents the shutout by hitting a solo HR in the 9th, but Tobin gets the 4-1 CG victory.

Game 2. 40-year-old Freddie Fitzsimmons gets the start, facing lefty Art Johnson, and Jimmy Wasdell replaces Joe Medwick in LF.

The Dodgers take an early 1-0 lead in the 1st, but the Braves respond with a 2-run HR by Max West. We tie it in the 2nd, and take a 3-2 lead in the 3rd.

4th Inning. Reese hits his first HR of the year, a 394-foot blast over the LF wall. Reiser doubles, and Herman singles, driving in Pete. 5-2, Dodgers. The Braves come back and score one in the bottom of the inning.

With 2 out in the 5th, Tom Earley relieves Art Johnson. Earley gives up back to back singles by Reese and Reiser. Runners on 1st and 3rd. Reiser gets caught stealing 2nd, and the inning is over.

In the bottom of the 6th, with 2 out, Paul Waner enters as a pinch-hitter. He hits one way way back, towards the right-center wall. Reiser chases it down, and makes the catch, barely missing a direct collision with the wall -- it was both beautiful and terrifying to watch. The kid knows no fear.

Bottom of the 7th -- Fitzsimmons walks the first two batters. He's finished. Johnnie Wittig enters in relief. The Braves get runners on 1st and 3rd, and try the hit & run. Anticipating this, I draw the infield in. Buddy Hassett grounds out to 1st, and Camilli fires it to Phelps -- Majeski is OUT at the plate! A perfectly executed defensive play.

Wittig then walks the bases loaded with 2 out. Earl Averill is at bat. Earl swings at the first pitch, and it's a harmless grounder to 1st base.

The Braves tie it 5-5 in the bottom of the 8th.

Top of the 9th. 1 out, and Joe Sullivan pitching for the Braves. Musial triples! Camilli grounds out, and Stan scores! 6-5.

Wittig hung on in the bottom of the 9th to earn the victory over Sullivan. What a game!

The Dodgers are 4-2, but the Phillies have started 5-0. We go back to NY for three against the Giants.

New York, Sunday April 20. It 55 degrees at the Polo Grounds, with the wind blowing out to LF at 14 mph. Higbe vs Schumacher.

In the 2nd Inning the Dodgers strike first, when Joe Medwick slams a 2-run homer to right. No outs.

6th Inning. With one out, Reiser singles and steals second. Musial follows with a double, scoring Reiser. 3-0, Dodgers.

8th Inning. Bob Carpenter now pitching for the Giants. Bases loaded, two outs. Lavagetto singles, scoring two runs! 5-0. In the bottom of the 8th, the shutout is spoiled, as with 2 out and the bases loaded, Medwick commits a fielding error, allowing two runs to score.
Higbe is taken out, and lefty Kemp Wicker is brought in.

9th Inning. Reese flies out. Reiser singles, and beats the pitch out to steal second. Musial flies to deep right, Pete dashes for third, and beats Mel Ott's throw! Camilli then singles, and Reiser scores! What a job of base running! Dodgers lead it 6-2.

Bottom of the 9th, 2 out. Wicker gives up a 2-run HR to Ott. It's 6-4. Hugh Casey comes in to get the final out. Casey strikes out Hartnett and earns the save for his buddy Higbe.

In Boston, the Phillies beat the Braves 7-1 and are now 6-0.

Monday, April 21. Casey vs Hubbell. Lavagetto and Herman get the day off, being spelled by Lew Riggs and Pete Coscarart.

A cold day. 34 degrees at gametime, with the wind blowing out to CF. There was no score until the top of the 5th. With one out, 3B Lew Riggs takes advantage of a bad pitch by Hubbell and hits a solo HR to RF. 1-0, Dodgers.

7th Inning. Riggs singles. Casey bunts him to 2nd. Reese hits a grounder to Hubbell, but Carl bobbles it and Reese reaches 1st. Riggs advances to 3rd on the error. That was the Giants' third fielding error in this game. Hubbell is becoming unwound. Reese steals second. Pete Coscarart flies to CF, and Johnny Rucker throws it to the cutoff man. Riggs scores. 2-0, Dodgers.

Bottom of the 7th. Casey gives up back to back doubles. It's 2-1.

Bottom of the 9th. Hugh retires the side and gets the 2-1 CG win over Hubbell.

Tuesday, April 22. Luke Hamlin vs Bill Lohrman. On this day Stan Musial is rested and replaced by Jimmy Wasdell, who will bat 8th. It's a beautiful day at the park: 64 degrees, with a slight wind out to CF.

The Giants held a 2-0 lead until the 6th. Dolph Camilli hit a 2-out 2-run HR to tie it up. In the bottom of the 6th, Mel Ott hit a solo HR to give the Giants a 3-2 lead. He's already hit 4 HR in this young season. With 2 out, Dick Bartell hit another homer. 4-2, Giants. Hamlin gave up another run before the inning was over.

8th Inning. Lew Riggs leads off with a pinch-hit double. Alex Kampouris pinch-runs for Riggs. Reese bunts Kampouris to 3rd. With 2 out, Camilli singles, and Kampouris scores. It's 5-3.

9th Inning. Medwick hits a leadoff homer. 5-4. That was it. Lohrman, who pitched an excellent game, got the win.

The Braves beat the Phillies, who are now 7-1. The Dodgers are 6-3, and next begin an extended homestand with two against the Phils.

Somehow, I outfleeced a master of the art (Branch Rickey) and stole this kid away from the Cardinals for a pitcher named Curt Davis (0-2, 9.00 ERA so far this season).

During the night I made a deal with Cleveland, sending LF Joe Vosmik and RP Kemp Wicker to the Indians in exchange for RF Hank Edwards and P Red Embree.

Brooklyn, April 23. Wyatt vs Rube Melton. Reiser gets a day off, and Tommy Tatum plays in CF.

In the bottom of the 3rd, with 1 out and runners at the corners, Herman executes the hit & run and Tatum scores.

That was all, as Wyatt pitches a 1-0 CG shutout. Whitlow allowed 5 hits and 3 walks while racking up 7 strikeouts.

April 24. Higbe vs Ike Pearson.

Bottom of the 4th. With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Medwick singles, scoring Reese.

The Phillies jump on Higbe in the 5th, scoring 5 runs. The Dodgers make it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Joe Marty hits a 3-run HR in the 6th, and it's 8-2. Higbe is pulled, and Bill Swift takes over. We get two back in the bottom of the 6th. 8-4.

Bottom of the 7th. Pinch-hitter Jimmy Wasdell and Reese hit back to back singles, putting runners at the corners. Herman strikes out on the attempted hit & run, and Reese gets thrown out at 2nd. Musial singles, driving in Wasdell. 8-5. Camilli doubles! Musial scores! 8-6.

8th Inning. Wittig now pitching. He gives up a 3-run homer to Johnny Rizzo, and it's 11-6. The Dodgers make it 11-7 in the bottom half.

9th Inning. Kimball takes the mound, and gives up two more runs. 13-7. That becomes the final, as the Dodgers could only get a single in the bottom of the 9th. The teams combined for 26 hits.

KG's observations: I need some bullpen help. The starters seem solid, though. The batting order hasn't yet settled -- Pete Reiser is performing excellently in the field, but he's not hitting. As of now, he's batting 8th in the order.

More on the Stan Musial deal: Cardinal owner Sam Breadon is furious with Rickey for letting Musial get away. There are even rumors that Rickey could soon be fired.

Closer to home, Larry MacPhail threatened to fire ME after trading Leo Durocher and Dixie Walker, but he's calmed down, for the moment. I had bypassed him and went directly to the Board of Trustees, who approved the deals. Frankly, I don't care for MacPhail's meddling attitude -- Brooklyn is too small to accomodate both of our egos. Sooner or later, one of us will have to go. I want nothing less than complete control over player moves, and I'm working on it.

Friday, April 25. The Braves come to town for a two-game series. Hugh Casey vs Dick Errickson.

The Braves start off playing aggressive ball, using stolen bases and the hit & run. They score 2 in the top of the 1st. We come right back. With 1 out, Herman doubles, and Musial singles. It's 2-1. Musial steals second -- Phil Masi's throw is too late. No more runs score this inning.

Bottom of the 4th. A leadoff double by Musial. Camilli singles. Runners at the corners, no outs. Phelps grounds to 1st, and Musial scores. It's 2-2.

Camilli is on 2nd. Lavagetto homers! 4-2, Dodgers.

The Braves come back and take a 5-4 lead in the 6th.

Bottom of the 6th. With 1 out, Camilli doubles. Phelps walks. Lavagetto walks. Bases loaded. Wasdell hits a flyball to CF. Camilli scores. We're tied at 5. Reiser, who is in a terrible slump, flies out. Inning over.

Wittig replaces Casey in the 8th. Bottom of the 8th: Errickson is still in, and with 1 out, gives up a triple to Camilli. Phelps is intentionally walked. Up comes Lavagetto. He flies to right center, and Averill snags it. Camilli dashes for home, and Averill throws Dolph out at the plate. Inning over.

Bottom of the 9th. Tom Earley relieves Errickson. Leading off is Jimmy Wasdell. The 2-0 count: Wasdell makes solid contact, and smashes a triple to right center! Reiser draws a walk. Pete takes off for second -- he's out! Mickey Owen pinch hits for Wittig -- he singles, Wasdell scores and the Dodgers win 6-5!

Wittig goes 3-0 in the relief role, and becomes the winningest Dodger pitcher so far.

Saturday, April 26. A windy day at Ebbets, with a stiff breeze blowing out to CF at 19 mph. Luke Hamlin faces Jim Tobin.

The Braves got 3 runs in the 2nd, including a wind-assisted solo HR by Tobin.

In the 5th Inning, Bama Rowell hit a bunt single, but the ball hit his thumb and broke it. He was taken out and Hank Majeski replaced him.

7th Inning. Swift relieves Hamlin. He gives up a HR to Majeski. 4-0.

Bottom of the 8th. Runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out. Pete Reiser breaks out of his slump in glorious fashion, smacking a 3-run homer! Tobin retires pinch-hitter Riggs and Reese. Herman hits a 2-out double. Musial fouls out. Damn!

9th Inning. "Fat Freddie" Fitzsimmons enters and retires the side.

Bottom of the 9th. Al Javery saves the win for Tobin. The Braves win it, 4-3.

Sunday, April 27. One game vs the Giants. Freddie Fitzsimmons vs Bill McGee. To give Camilli a needed break, Jimmy Wasdell is covering 1B.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 6th. With 2 out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Reese doubles -- 2-0, Dodgers. Kimball replaced Fitzsimmons in the top of the inning, so he's now the pitcher of record.

Top of the 7th. Earl Johnson gets his first appearance, relieving Kimball. In the first pitch, he gives up a triple and twists his foot -- he's out. In comes 24-year-old Roy Bruner. He walks Mickey Witek. Runners at the corners, no outs. Ott pinch hits for McGee.

I play a hunch. Infield back. Ott singles. A run scores. 2-1. Runners at 1st and 2nd. Rucker singles. Bases loaded. That's enough. I bring in Whit Wyatt to minimize the damage. Double play, but a run scores. 2-2.

Bottom of the 7th. Reiser and Wasdell get back to back singles. Runners at the corner, no outs. Musial lines to right, and Reiser takes off. Pete scores! 3-2, Dodgers.

Bottom of the 8th. Mace Brown now pitching for the Giants. He loads the bases. 1 out. Mace is removed. In comes another Brown named Jumbo. He faces Pete Reiser. Reiser doubles, and two runs score. It's 5-2. Wasdell is walked. Still 1 out. Musial hits a sac fly.
6-2. Jumbo gets shell-shocked, and gives up three more runs. Bob Bowman finally comes in to relieve him. 9-2, Dodgers.

Bill Swift pitched the 9th and ended the Giants' misery. Wyatt got the win, and Mace Brown took the loss.

We end the month with a three game series with the Reds. The Reds are ahead of us by a half-game at 9-4. The Phillies are 11-2.

Brooklyn, April 28. Higbe vs Elmer Riddle.

We take an early 1-0 lead in the 1st. Elmer doesn't even make it through the inning. He's removed, and replaced by Junior Thompson.

Bottom of the 4th. 2 outs, Camilli on 3rd, Medwick on 2nd. Pete Coscarart singles, and both runners score! It's 3-0.

We score again in the bottom of the 6th.

Higbe has a shutout going into the 9th, but gives up 3 runs. Nevertheless, he gets the 4-3 CG win.

Tuesday, April 29. Several players get rested, and the lineup is altered. Our next day off isn't until May 12. Earl Johnson is placed on the 60-day DL. I call up Roger Wolff, a recent free-agent signee.

Wyatt (4-1, 1.06) hands Paul Derringer (3-1, 3.44) his first loss of the season in a CG 6-0 shutout. This was Whit's second consecutive shutout. He gave up 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 5. The Dodgers racked up 12 hits, including home runs by Camilli and Lavagetto.

In Philadelphia, the Pirates beat the Phillies. This puts Brooklyn within 1 game of the Phils.

Wednesday, April 30. A cold day at Ebbets Field -- 41 degrees at gametime. Hugh Casey faces Johnny Vander Meer.

It's a classic pitchers duel until the bottom of the 4th. The Dodgers take advantage of a fielding error by Eddie Joost and score a run. 1-0.

The Reds tie it with a 2-out single by Vander Meer in the 5th, and take the lead with a 2-out single by Lonnie Frey in the 7th.

The Reds win this one, 2-1, and Whitey Moore earns a save.

At the end of April, the 11-4 Phillies hold a 1 game lead over the 11-6 Dodgers.

In the AL, the Athletics have a 1.5 game lead over the Yankees.

Stat update: at the end of April , Doc Cramer of the Senators is hitting a torrid .442. Ted Williams, Dolph Camilli and Mel Ott each have 4 HR. Camilli leads in RBI with 15.

The ERA leader is Whit Wyatt of my Dodgers -- 1.06. Schoolboy Rowe of the Tigers went 4-0 in the opening month.

Thursday, May 1. Hamlin vs Bucky Walters. The Dodgers strike first in the 3rd with a 2-out 2-run single by Jimmy Wasdell. Mickey Owen follows with a double. 4-0.

The Reds come back and score 3 in the 5th. 4-3 is the final, as Hamlin goes 2-2 and Newt Kimball pitches the last three innings to earn his first save.

In Philadelphia, the Pirates hand the Phillies their 3rd straight loss. The Dodgers (12-6) & Phillies (11-5) are in a virtual tie for first place.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Giants have started horribly, and occupy the cellar at 3-13. I derive some satisfaction from that, as Leo "the Lip" is right there with them. As a matter of fact, Durocher was demoted to AAA.

Friday, May 2. First of a two game series with the Cubs. Higbe vs Claude Passeau.

The Cubbies jump to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

4th Inning. Reese hits a leadoff HR to CF. Then, with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Lew Riggs singles, scoring Billy Herman from 2nd. 3-2. Phelps ties it up with another single. Bases loaded, 1 out. Reiser singles. We take a 4-3 lead.

The Cubs tie it in the 6th, and Bill Swift relieves Higbe in the 7th.

With 1 out and two runners on, Paul Erickson relieves Passeau in the bottom of the 7th. Erickson gets Riggs to hit into a DP.

9th Inning. Now it's Johnnie Wittig vs lefty Ken Raffensberger. With 1 out in the bottom half, Herman doubles. Camilli flies out to deep right. Herman advances. Musial singles! Herman scores! Dodgers win 5-4! Wittig is now 4-0 in relief.

At Shibe Park, the Cardinals defeat the Phillies, and the Dodgers now take 1st place!

Saturday, May 3. Wyatt vs Charlie Root.

Uh-oh. Wyatt gets off to a shaky start, giving up 3 hits (including a HR and a double) and 2 runs in the top of the first.

The Dodgers respond with a solo HR by Herman in the bottom of the first. It's 2-1.

Wyatt was done after 6 1/3, having given up 5 walks and the Cubs leading 3-1. Freddie Fitzsimmons relieves him.

In the bottom of the 7th, a bit of magic occurs. 2 outs, bases loaded. Joe Medwick pinch hits for Fitzsimmons. Joe gets a fastball, muscles into it, and the ball flies way way back to RF -- and into the stands! It's a grand slam HR!! The Dodgers take a 5-3 lead.

8th Inning. This is a job for Hugh Casey, who makes his second relief appearance. He gives up a single to Stan Hack in the 9th, but that's all. Fitzsimmons wins, Root loses, and Casey earns the save.

As of today, Brooklyn (14-6) has the best record in the majors.

In the AL, the Yankees (13-6), having won 5 in a row, take a half-game lead over the Athletics.

Sunday, May 4. A three game series with the Pirates starts with Fitzsimmons vs Ken Heintzelman.

Freddie starts off strong, striking out two of the first three batters he faces.

Fitz gives up 2 in the 2nd.

We score 1 in the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 outs and 2 runners on, Pete Reiser hits a pinch-hit single. Game tied.

Bottom of the 9th. Heintzelman strikes out the side. We go to extra innings.

Bottom of the 12th. Dutch Dietz pitching for the Bucs. With 1 out, Tommy Tatum triples. Lew Riggs pinch hits for Bill Swift, and he hits a single! Tatum scores, and the Dodgers win it 3-2!

Monday, May 5. Temperature 71 degrees, with the wind blowing out to RF at 18 mph. Expect some fireworks today. Hugh Casey faces Rip Sewell.

On the first pitch, Arky Vaughan hit a homer. With 1 out, Elbie Fletcher hit another one. 2-0, Pirates.

3rd Inning. Fletcher hits his second homer, a 2-run shot. 4-0, Pirates.

4th Inning. Reese homers. It's 4-1.

5th Inning. Vaughan hits HIS second home run. 5-1. Vince Dimaggio knocks out a 2-run shot. Unbelievable. Six homers in 5 innings!

The Dodgers get back a run in the 6th. It's 7-2.

The Bucs added two more in the 8th. The Dodgers score 3 in the bottom of the inning. 9-5.

For good measure, the Pirates scored again the top of the 9th. 10-5. That was the final, and we were glad when it ended.

Tuesday, May 6. Hamlin vs Max Butcher.

We again get victimized by the long ball in the 1st inning. Al Lopez hits a 3-run shot.

The Dodgers get back one in the 2nd, on a sac fly by Reiser. We make it 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th. Swift relieves Hamlin in the 6th.

Wasdell homers in the 8th to tie the game. The Bucs take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th.

Bottom of the 9th. Bob Klinger on the mound. Stan Musial leads off with a pinch-hit double. Reese bunts him to 3rd. Herman grounds out, Musial scores. It's 4-4. Camilli flies out. We go to the 10th.

Higbe makes a relief appearance.

Bottom of the 11th. 2B Stu Martin bobbles a grounder, allowing Reiser to reach 1st. Phelps bats for Owen. He singles, and Reiser advances to 2nd. Hank Edwards hits for Higbe. Hank executes a successful hit & run -- runners advance. 1 out. The Pirates bring the infield in. Reese hits one into the gap, and Reiser scores! Dodgers win 5-4!!

Higbe wins it, Klinger loses it.

Brooklyn, May 7. Fitzsimmons vs Lon Warneke. Temperature in the 60s, with a swirling 12 mph wind.

1st Inning. With 1 out and Herman on first, Camilli slugs a triple. Medwick doubles, and it's 2-0.

2nd Inning. 2 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd. Herman hits a fly to left. Don Padgett flubs a routine catch and the ball rolls to the wall. It's a two-base error, allowing Owen to score from 2nd. 3-0. Herman goes to 2nd, and Tatum advances to 3rd. Camilli strikes out.

4th Inning. Fitzsimmons, a cagey 40-year-old with not much speed but good control, has only allowed one batter to reach base so far. In this inning he allows three hits and a run.

6th Inning. The Cardinals make it 3-2.

Wittig relieves Fitz in the 7th.

Bottom of the 7th. Harry Gumbert now on the mound. Camilli singles to lead off. Then, with 2 outs, Jimmy Wasdell homers to RF! 5-2, Dodgers.

The Cards score one in the 8th. 5-3.

Bottom of the 8th. 2 outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd. Wasdell singles to deep right. Two runs score. It's 7-3. Gumbert is finished, and in comes Sam Nahem. It does no good. We score again on a single by Tatum. 8-3.

8-3 is the final. Wittig (4-0, 5.54) finishes the game and earns the save for Fitzsimmons (2-0, 2.45). Warneke is now 2-3, with a 3.48 ERA.

In Philadelphia, the Cubs shut out the Phillies 7-0. This gives Brooklyn (17-7) a 2 game lead.

During the night, two separate deals were made with the Pirates. In the first trade, we sent SP Luke Hamlin and RP Bill Swift in exchange for SP Ken Heintzelman and 2B Frankie Gustine.

In the second, 2B Billy Herman went to Pittsburgh in exchange for SS Billy Cox. Cox will be Reese's backup.

Does this strengthen the Dodgers ? Yes. We added some youth and speed to the lineup and have a promising young LHP who can immediately enter the rotation. GM MacPhail acquiesced to my suggestions, as the younger guys will build on the team's foundation for the future. For once we agreed.

Thursday, May 8. Wyatt vs Ernie White.

3rd Inning. In his second AB as a Dodger, Gustine hits a double, scoring a run.

Bottom of the 5th. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Wasdell (.348/2/11) hits yet another clutch single, scoring two runs. 3-0. Tatum singles. Another run comes in. 4-0.

Wyatt ran out of steam in the 7th, and the Cards tied the game. In a last-ditch effort, Whit retired the side in the 8th.

Top of the 9th. Newt Kimball relieves Wyatt, and holds, ending it by striking out Enos Slaughter on 3 straight pitches.

Bottom of the 9th. 2 outs. Sam Nahem pitching. Lavagetto singles. Wasdell draws a walk. Tatum flies out. Extra innings.

Bottom of the 10th. Phelps leads off vs Nahem. He hits it with power, it goes far and high to RF -- I don't believe it, it's a home run! The Dodgers pull another rabbit out of the hat, and win it 5-4!!. Kimball wins, Nahem loses.

What a way to end the home stand. We now start a road trip, beginning with a weekend series against the second-place Phillies.

Here is the new-look Dodger lineup. While Reiser is struggling, youngsters Jimmy Wasdell and Lew Riggs have been outstanding so far:

Philadelphia, Friday May 9. Ken Heintzelman vs Lee Grissom. Two southpaws facing each other, and a 20mph wind blowing out to RF. It might not matter in this park, with its deep expanses. This isn't the homey atmosphere of Ebbets Field. It is huge. Look at this place:

Top of the 2nd. Cookie Lavagetto figured it out. He leads off with a triple to deep right. Tatum follows with a sac fly. Cookie goes home and beats the throw. 1-0.

Top of the 3rd. Heintzelman fakes a bunt, Grissom gets rattled, and Ken ends up drawing a walk. Gustine doubles. Heintzelman goes to 3rd. No outs. Reese flies out, and Heintzelman scores. 2-0. Gustine gets thrown out at 3rd when Musial singles, but Stan makes it to 2nd. Medwick then hits a clean single, and Musial scores. 3-0. Reiser singles, and Medwick moves to third. It ends when Reiser gets caught trying to steal second.

Top of the 6th. Heintzelman helps his own cause with a 2-out RBI single. 4-0, Dodgers. That finishes Grissom. Rube Melton relieves him. 2 outs. Runners on 1st and 3rd. Melton throws over the catcher's head, and a run scores. Wild pitch. 5-0.

In the 8th inning, the defensive subs come in for Brooklyn. Heintzelman tires, and gives up 3 runs.

Top of the 9th. With 2 outs and a runner on 1st, Medwick doubles, gets an RBI, and ices the cake. 6-3.

Newt Kimball nearly blew it in the bottom of the 9th, loading up the bases and allowing a run, but Hank Edwards ended it by throwing out Danny Murtaugh at the plate. Dodgers win, 6-4. Heintzelman wins in his first start as a Dodger, and Kimball earns his second save.

The Dodgers now take a 3 game lead over the Phillies.

Roster notes: I made another trade over the course of the night. Camilli has no backup, so I made some calls and came up with this : reserve 2B Alex Kampouris went to the Cubs for a left-handed 1B named Eddie Waitkus.

PS In this league, you can't have enough pitching. The Dodgers are loaded with batters, so I hope to get a quality lefty reliever for one of them. I'll be looking.

2nd Inning. Reiser hits a 2-out RBI single.

3rd Inning. An RBI double for Coscarart. An RBI single for Musial. 3-0, Dodgers.

Medwick made it 4-0 with a double in the 9th.

Higbe (4-2, 3.33) gets the CG shutout. The Dodgers have won 5 in a row, and take a 4-game lead over the Phillies.

Sunday, May 11. Casey vs Ike Pearson.

With a 2-1 lead going into the 6th, the Dodgers cut loose and score 8 runs. Brooklyn gets three more in the 9th.

Casey completes the game and the Dodgers complete the sweep with the 13-2 rout of the Phillies.

Monday will be a well-earned day off.

Cincinnati, Tuesday, May 13. First of two aginst the Reds. Wyatt vs Monte Pearson.

1st Inning. Frankie Gustine has been hitting at a torrid pace since coming over from the Pirates, and leads off with a triple. Reese strikes out, and then Camilli doubles. Gustine scores. Musial walks. Medwick grounds into a DP. 1-0, Dodgers.

2nd Inning. Not to be outdone, Pete Reiser hits a leadoff triple. In the last ten days, Pete has batted .455. Riggs walks. Owen walks. Bases loaded, no outs. Wyatt grounds out, and Reiser scores. Gustine hits a sac fly, scoring Riggs. Reese singles, Owen scores. Camilli flies out. 4-0.

3rd Inning. Pearson is off to a horrendous start. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Reiser doubles. 5-0.

Brooklyn makes it 7-0 in the 6th. Pearson is done.

The Reds prevent the shutout by scoring one in the 7th, and another in the 9th.

Wyatt (5-1, 2.04) completes the 7-2 victory. He gave up 9 hits, but walked none and struck out 7.

This was the Dodgers' 7th consecutive win. The Phillies, on the other hand, lose their 4th straight and fall to 6 games back.

Brooklyn has a team BA of .301, which leads the majors. We also have the best ERA in the majors (2.98).

Wednesday, May 14. Heintzelman vs Bucky Walters.

3rd Inning. One out. Reese triples. Camilli lines to right, Reese scores -- it's a sac fly.

4th Inning. Owen hits an RBI double. Later, with 2 outs and bases loaded, Reese slaps an RBI single. Camilli empties the bases with a double to deep left. It's 6-0. The Reds respond with one run in the bottom half. 6-1.

Brooklyn keeps pouring it on, scoring 3 runs in the 6th.

The Reds score 2 in the 9th. Heintzelman gets a 9-3 CG win. He gives up 11 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

Next is a three game series with the Pirates (15-12), who have won 5 straight and moved into second place.

5th Inning. Brooklyn scores first, on an RBI triple by Camilli.

8th Inning. Owen makes it 2-0 on an RBI single.

The final out of the game is when former Dodger Billy Herman pops up behind the plate.

Higbe wins and Kimball earns the save as they combine for the shutout. It's the Dodgers' 9th consecutive victory.

The Pirates break the deadlock in the 5th and take a 2-1 lead. They score again in the 6th. 3-1.

Wittig relieves Casey in the 8th.

Sewell pitches a CG victory, ending our winning streak.

In the AL, the Tigers (20-11) now lead the Yankees by 2 games.

1st Inning. We start with two singles and a walk, loading the bases. Musial doubles, and 2 runs score. Stan is on 2nd and Camilli's on 3rd. Medwick brings in Dolph on a sac fly. Reiser flies out, and Musial goes to 3rd. Lavagetto singles, Musial scores. Owen strikes out. 4-0.

2nd Inning. 1 out, runners on 2nd and 3rd. Camilli doubles; 2 RBIs. The Dodgers have scored 6 runs even before the Pirates can get a man on base. They do get 2 hits in the bottom half, but no runs.

3rd Inning. Reiser, now nicknamed "Pistol Pete", hits a leadoff triple. He scores on an Owen groundout. Wyatt even gets a 2-out single. 7-0. The Pirates make it 7-2 in the bottom of the inning.

We score another run in the 5th. 8-2. The Pirates score one in the 6th, and one in the 8th. 8-4.

Wyatt (6-1, 2.44) completes the game, but not without giving up a run in the bottom of the 9th. We win it 8-5.

The Pirates (16-14) drop to 3rd place, while the Reds (17-14) move up to 2nd. The Dodgers are now 25-8, leading Cincinnati by 7 games.

It's on to Chicago for a three game series.

Chicago, Sunday May 18. Camilli gets a rare day off, and young Eddie Waitkus will start at 1B, batting eighth in the order. Two southpaws square off today: Ken Heintzelman and Larry French.

The Cubs score first, as Hank Leiber hits a 2-run HR in the 1st inning.

We score one in the 2nd, an RBI single by Owen. The Cubs make it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.

In the 4th, Owen scores Wasdell on a sac fly. 3-2.

6th Inning. Reiser ties it up with an RBI triple. Heintzelman helps his own cause by hitting a double, scoring Reiser. We take a 4-3 lead. The Cubs respond with 5 runs in the bottom half. 8-4.

Wittig relieves Heintzelman in the 8th, but the Cubs score 2 more runs. 10-4. That's the final. French gets the CG win.

The first hit is a 2-out double by Lavagetto in the 2nd. Owen drives him in with a single.

6th Inning. Wasdell singles, and Lavagetto triples. It's 2-0.

7th Inning. Gustine singles and steals second. Reese brings him in with a single. 3-0.

Bottom of the 8th. Nicholson homers. 3-1. Higbe then gives up two singles. He's done. In comes Kimball. He holds.

Kimball retires the side in the 9th and saves the victory for Higbe. Dodgers win 3-1.

In the AL, the Tigers have won six straight, and lead the Yankees by 3 games.

5th Inning. Root loads the bases, and walks in Reiser. 1-0.

7th Inning. 1 out. Runners on 2nd and 3rd. "Pistol Pete" Reiser homers, and it's 4-0.

Casey (3-3, 3.44) tired in the 9th, but still completed the game and got a 4-2 win.

The road trip continues west to St. Louis.

St. Louis, Wednesday May 21. Wyatt vs Ernie White.

2nd Inning. Stan Musial leads off with a triple. Owen grounds to second --Crespi commits an error -- Owen reaches first, and Musial scores.

4th Inning. Billy Cox, subbing for Reese, hits an RBI double. Wyatt follows with an RBI sacfly . 3-0. Gustine singles. Cox scores from 2nd. 4-0.

Reiser and Camilli hit back to back doubles in the 9th. 5-0. Medwick singles. Camilli scores. 6-0.

Wyatt (7-1, 2.15) gets the CG shutout. Whit gave up 8 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 6. Wyatt has already pitched 3 shutouts in this season.

KG notes: The folks in Brooklyn are going nuts. We haven't been to a World Series in 21 years, and we've been dominant, so far. There's still a long way to go.

There was no score until the bottom of the 6th, when the Cards took a 2-0 lead.

7th Inning. Reiser and Musial hit back to back singles. Medwick doubles -- both runners score. 2-2. No outs. Lavagetto singles -- runners at the corners. Owen hits a sac fly. We take a 3-2 lead.

Kimball relieves Heintzelman in the bottom of the 7th. Newt loads up the bases, and St. Louis scores three runs. 5-3.

Wittig replaces Kimball in the 8th.

9th Inning. Mort Cooper now pitching for St. Louis. Musial singles. Medwick singles. Lavagetto doubles -- game tied at 5. Harry Gumbert relieves Cooper. Owen bunts Lavagetto to 3rd. Riggs pinch hits -- he's intentionally walked. Gustine singles, and it's 6-5.

Bottom of the 9th. Fitzsimmons attempts to save it for Wittig. Unfortunately, he blows it. Cardinals win 7-6. Gumbert earns the victory.

We return to Brooklyn for the first of a five game series with the Phillies. We play three at Ebbets, then travel to Shibe Park for the final two.

Saturday, May 24. Higbe vs Ike Pearson.

Higbe doesn't have a good outing. He strikes out 5, but allows 4 walks and a home run. He's also charged with a wild pitch. Trailing 4-0 in the 6th, Hig is pulled for a pinch-hitter.

The Phillies put it out of reach in the 8th, when Litwhiler hit a 3-run homer off of Wittig. 7-0.

Pearson tires in the 9th, and the Dodgers score 5 runs. Ike stays in the game, though, and gets the 7-5 CG victory.

Sunday, May 25. Casey vs Si Johnson.

We get off to a good start with an RBI double by Reiser and an RBI single by Musial in the 1st.

Musial drives in another run in the 3rd. 3-0.

Kimball relieves Casey in the 8th, and earns his 5th save as he preserves the win.

Casey is now 4-3, with a 3.11 ERA.

In the AL, the Tigers (26-14) hold a one-game lead over the Yankees.

Monday, May 26. Wyatt vs Johnny Podgajny. Today at Ebbets Field the wind is blowing out to RF at 14 mph.

The Phillies take advantage of the windy conditions in the 2nd, as Bobby Bragan hits a 2-run homer to RF. Stan Benjamin immediately follows with a solo HR.

Pinky May hits another one out in the 5th, and it's 5-0.

Fitzsimmons takes the mound in the 8th. In the bottom of the inning, the late-inning rally continues, as Medwick hits a 2-out RBI single. 5-4.

Bottom of the 9th. Podgajny is still pitching. Owen hits a leadoff double. Pinch-hitter Wasdell grounds out, and Owen advances to 3rd. Gustine grounds out. Owen holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Reese then singles, and we're tied at 5. Camilli grounds out, and we go into extra innings.

Kimball pitches the top of the 10th, and holds the Phillies.

Bottom of the 10th. Reiser walks, but gets caught stealing second on a pitchout. Musial doubles. Tommy Hughes relieves Podgajny, and Medwick grounds out, advancing the runner. Riggs flies out.

The top of the 12th is disastrous, as Roy Bruner gives up 6 runs. 11-5, Phillies. Cy Blanton gives up one run in the bottom of the inning, but gets the 11-6 win.

Philadelphia, Tuesday May 27. Heintzelman vs Lee Grissom.

The Dodgers waste no time in getting on the scoreboard. Gustine leads off with a double, and Reese hits an RBI single. Pee Wee advances to second. Camilli grounds out, and Reese goes to 3rd. Medwick walks. Reiser singles, Reese scores. Musial singles, Medwick scores. 3-0.

In the 2nd, Grissom loads up the bases. 1 out. Medwick singles, two runs score. 5-0.

The Phillies score a run in the 3rd. 5-1.

Musial hits a 2-out RBI double in the 4th. Lavagetto follows with a 2-run single. 8-1. Grissom is pulled, and Bill Harman relieves. Phelps triples. 9-1.

The Phillies make it 9-2 in the 5th.

7th Inning. Bill Crouch now pitching for the Phils. Brooklyn, however, continues to extract revenge for yesterday's loss and score two runs. 11-2.

It becomes 12-4 in the 8th, and that is the final. Heintzelman is now 4-2, with a 3.30 ERA. Grissom is 3-5, with a horrendous 7.03 ERA.

Wednesday, May 28. Higbe vs Ike Pearson.

We take a 2-0 lead going into the 3rd, and Camilli makes it 3-0 with a solo HR.

We added another run in the 8th. 4-0.

Higbe (7-3, 2.52) cruised to a 4-hit CG shutout. He walked 3 and struck out 3.

We have a day off on Thursday, then go to the Polo Grounds for a series with the Giants.

Minor league update: we signed free agent P Emil Kush, and immediately traded him to the Athletics for a prospect named Don Richmond. Don, who is 22 years old, will be groomed as our 3B of the future. He is hitting .331, with 3 HR and 19 RBI.

Lineup note: with Pistol Pete Reiser improving, he and Camilli switch places in the batting order.

Team notes: in individual performances, we have the leader in stolen bases (Reiser, with 12), and shutouts (Wyatt, with 3). As a TEAM, we are batting .303, as are the Yankees.

Our one weakness: the bullpen. I've made some offers, but there's no one available. At this point, no team wants to deal with us.

New York, Friday May 30. A doubleheader today.

Game 1. Casey vs Hal Schumacher. The Giants are in the second division, and hate our guts.

This is a hard-fought game. Both pitchers are bearing down. It is indeed a pitchers' duel.

Brooklyn gets a break in the 5th. Musial and Medwick hit back to back singles. Lew Riggs doubles, and we lead 2-0!

The Giants take a 3-2 lead with a Mel Ott homer in the bottom of the 5th.

Bottom of the 6th. Moore homers. 4-2. Jurges homers. 5-2.

Bottom of the 7th. Casey blows up, allowing two more runs. He's had it. I bring in Kimball to minimize the damage. He gives up a double. We're screwed. The Giants takes a 9-2 lead.

Now we get angry. The hits start coming. Reese homers in the 8th. 9-4.

In the 8th I bring in the "sacrificial lamb", Roy Bruner. This time he only gives up one run. 10-4.

The Dodgers fought back, but the final was 10-5.

Game 2. Whit Wyatt vs Carl Hubbell.

It was scoreless until the 3rd. With 2 outs and a runner on, Pistol Pete Reiser tripled. 1-0.

In the 7th, with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, Wyatt executes a perfect sac bunt. Both runners advance. Gustine doubles --2 RBI. 3-0.

The Giants scored one in the 8th.

Wyatt (8-1, 2.36) held on for the 3-1 CG win.

Saturday, May 31. Heintzelman vs Bill Lohrman.

Ken gets in trouble in the 2nd and loads up the bases. However, he gets out of the inning allowing only one run.

We tie it with a 2-out double by Owen in the 4th. The Giants make it 2-1 in the bottom half.

NY scores in the 6th. 3-1. That becomes the final.

We begin June with an 11 day homestand.

Brooklyn, Sunday June 1. The Cardinals visit. Higbe vs ex-Dodger Curt Davis.

Bottom of the 1st. Gustine singles, and Reese triples. 1-0. Reiser hits a sac fly. 2-0.

2nd Inning. Johnny Mize hits a leadoff HR. 2-1. They later tie it up.

3rd Inning. Pee Wee Reese is mad as hell. He's committed two errors in this game, and leads off with a double. Reiser is next. On a 1-1 pitch, he hits it out! 4-2, Dodgers.

Bottom of the 5th. Reiser hits a leadoff single, and steals second. Pistol Pete leads the majors in SB. Camilli flies to left, and Reiser races to 3rd. Medwick singles , and Reiser scores! 5-2. Musial draws a walk. Lavagetto walks. Bases loaded, 1 out. Davis is in deep trouble.

Mickey Owen swings at the first pitch -- it's goes back, deep to right --and it's gone! A grand slam ! 9-2. Davis is knocked out of the game -- Clyde Shoun enters. Shoun closes the inning.

Meanwhile, Higbe has walked 3, struck out 3, and given up 4 hits.

With 1 out, Kirby gives up a 2-run HR to Marty Marion in the bottom of the 9th. 9-4. That will be the final.

Higbe (8-3, 2.68) completes the game by striking out Enos Slaughter.

We now lead the Reds by 7.5 games. In the AL, the Tigers lead the Yankees by 3.5.

Individual stats: Ted Williams leads the majors with 11 HR. He is hitting .313, with 28 RBI. The Red Sox (18-28) are currently 6th in the AL, 13.5 games behind the Tigers. Rumor has it that Ted could be on the trading block.

The rumor was true. The Dodgers traded P Whit Wyatt to the Red Sox for Ted Williams. No joke. The Sox agreed to the deal, considering it a "fair trade". Indeed.

Now, we have to rebuild our pitching rotation.

I traded Newt Kimball to the Tigers for SP Dizzy Trout, who is currently on the DL.

We also sent 1B Eddie Waitkus to the Browns for veteran SP Johnny Niggeling.

The Dodgers now have an OF (Williams, Reiser and Musial) that is second to none. The pitching now becomes questionable, but this is all part of the deconstruction and reconstruction of the team. To do this now, when we are winning, may seem like madness. We shall see.

Monday, June 2. A sudden heat wave. It's 89 degrees at Ebbets, with the wind blowing out to RF at 10 mph. Casey vs LHP Max Lanier.

The Cards score first. 1-0. The Dodgers come right back, and tie it. Then, Ted Williams' first AB as a Dodger is a 2-run HR. 3-1.

2nd Inning. In making a routine play, Frankie Gustine twists the wrong way and falls back awkwardly, flat on his back. He hears something crack. He doesn't get up. He can't move. He has to be carted off the field and taken to the hospital. Pete Coscarart takes over at 2nd.

St. Louis scores one in the 6th. 3-2. They tie it in the 7th.

It remains tied through the 9th, and we go into extra innings.

Bottom of the 10th. Howie Krist pitching. Camilli walks. The hit & run is called: Musial singles, and Camilli advances to 3rd. Lavagetto, on a 2-2 pitch, singles, Camilli scores , and the Dodgers win it 4-3!

Freddie Fitzsimmons got the win, and Krist took the loss.

Injury update: Frankie Gustine suffered a serious back injury, and was placed on the 60-day DL. It is likely that he will be out for the remainder of the season. I call up recently-signed Rusty Peters from AAA to fill the roster spot. Pete Coscarart will now become our regular 2B.

The Dodgers now have 3 players on the DL. We're in first place, but we're hurting.

6th Inning. The Cardinals score one in the top, but the Dodgers respond with 3 in the bottom.

St. Louis makes it 3-2 in the top of the 7th. Mort Cooper pitches in the bottom half. He loads the bases. Musial sac flys. 4-2.

8th Inning. Heintzelman gives up a 3-run homer to Jonny Mize. 5-4, Cards.

5-4 is the final. Cooper wins, Heintzelman loses.

June 4. Vs the Cubs. New arrival Jonny Niggeling faces Charley Root.

The Cubs take an early 1-0 lead. They make it 3-0 in the 4th.

I tried a couple of the untested pitchers in the 8th, and it was awful. Wolff and Bruner gave up 8 runs. The only bright spot was Bob Chipman, who entered in the 9th and allowed no hits. Bob also got a strikeout.

It was humiliating. Root shuts us out 11-0.

The Pirates are creeping up on us. They are 6 games back, but have won 5 in a row.

In the AL, the Tigers are 5.5 games ahead of the Yankees. Detroit has won 7 straight.

KG notes: in remaking this team, I'm paying a price. The batting lineup may be strong in youth, power and speed, but the pitching staff has been weakened considerably. So be it. Ebbets Field is a hitter's park.

Thursday, June 5. Higbe vs Claude Passeau.

1st Inning. With 2 outs and 2 runners on, Camilli homers. 3-0. Two more runners reach base, and Medwick singles. 4-0. It's revenge time.

3rd Inning. Two outs, Reiser on 3rd. Camilli triples! It's 5-0. Medwick lines to Passeau, who muffs the catch. Camilli scores on the error. 6-0.

4th Inning. Passeau loads the bases, and walks in a run. 7-0. Riggs hits a sac fly. 8-0.

The Cubs scored 2 in the 6th. 8-2. Joe Medick came back with a 3-run homer. 11-2.

We score in the 7th. 12-2. No mercy. We're out for blood.

Kirby gives up a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th, but refuses to be taken out. I don't argue with him.

He gets the 12-4 CG win. Hig, who is now our staff ace, goes 9-3, with a 2.81 ERA.

We have Friday off.

KG note: for the next game, I'm gonna move Billy Cox over to 2B. He has a great arm, average range, average hands and excellent speed. He will bat 2nd in the lineup. Let's see what he can do.
