25/2:

Palmyra: My secret DIV from Korea, had to be used, but didn't unload the main force of this or my 6th Base force, they remain on badly damaged ships ... after 1078 coastal shots were fired and my ships were peppered with holes ... I decided to remove this tf from the hex, get some more escorts and then send it back to unload ... of course, it could get sunk by a/c in that time ... Damn I was stupid, light losses earlier lulled me into a false sense .. all the tf's you see below are damaged in one way or another ...

Singapore finally fell ... completely damaged and weeks away from repair.

1 Day away from my Java invasion ... (pic below is my invasion plan)
I was thinking of just marching down the Island, he has consolidated his forces in 2 main bases, but realised I should invade from multiple points. And although I'm now worried he has split his CV force and is steaming around Oz ...I think that I had better attempt to surround his forces with multiple landing points ,timed for the first few days of March.

26/2: Only thing of note is my unopposed invasion of Java... and how ineffective my attack at Yenen was ... sorry for Combat report ... 3-1 troops and 1-250 assault odds ... cool maths !!!

Attacking force 88767 troops, 910 guns, 145 vehicles, Assault Value = 1780
Defending force 33369 troops, 57 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 866
Japanese max assault: 32 - adjusted assault: 8
Allied max defense: 909 - adjusted defense: 806

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 5) ...

Just calculated that I need about 33000 assault value (about a million troops), I know you want to tell me about ground combat, I'm just having a laugh ... and will cut off supply etc ...

27/2/42:
Palmyra - the main force of Naval guards and my Inf Div have arrived by ship (each is on one ship each)after reinforcing them with CL's, to land tomorrow. The fragment's are already on Palmyra, under supplied and not doing so well. His air force didn't fly today, but I expect tomorrow to be bloody again.

Rangoon has been assaulted by 60 000 Japanese troops Vs 15000 he has stationed, I reduced his fort by one, but am now facing the fact that I don;t have enough troops to surround him and cut him off ... Day attacks continue on Moulmein by B-17E's, which are destroying my resource base. I have to wait a few days until I get engineers in place, for a better CAP.

Singapore is repairing quicker than expected, but I'm waiting for more replenishment of troops, before I load them and send them to Java, Manila & Burma.

Have a load of troops waiting in Tokyo, but am unwilling to move them till they fill out a bit more.

I have some Aviation Reg on route to Noumea, but it is 3-4 days away, and until then I'm worried he will jump me.

CV Akagi made it to Kwaj, but am unlikely to commit it till a bit later... although will reposition it to Noumea area, when Soryu is repaired (currently 10 sys).... His CV's are no longer spotted around Noumea ... I had moved loads of planes there which didn't fly for 2 turns... but I'm sure he will want Noumea back shortly.

1/3/1942: Good news from Palmyra:- The day broke & saw the last of our troops unloaded, they moved quickly inland and the ensuing shock attack reduced the fort to 0. News flowed through the ranks that tomorrow might see the rising sun fly over the Island, but boy's from the Div force that landed a few days ago, look ragged and hitching their belts a little tighter.

Meanwhile ...

At Rangoon, 3 Inf Div's with a HQ, are taking no time to reduce the fort and instill fear into the Colonial Div's. They are looking for a way out, but our commander is firmly committed to making them All POW's by the end of the month.

2/3/42: Feeling rather disillusioned today ... I still haven't given him a bloody nose, he has spent the last 3 months, ducking and diving, and now, I'm in bad shape after my Palmyra experience ...

Palmyra, my quagmire, supply ships sunk, 30+ ships damaged and now my troops desperate for any sustenance ... I think I'm going to lose some to attrition soon ... my next supply convoy is 3-4 days away ... can I hold out ?

PM also got it's first taste of B-17E's today ...In Burma, his air force rules the skies, Moulmein can't defend itself as it has no a/c engineers there ...

I have a nasty feeling his CV's are near Java and will destroy my forces enroute ... I'm completely out of position for this ...

Manila is still a long long road ...
Nothing positive today, more positivity tomorrow ...

3/3/42: Burma Another black day for my air arm..

I tasked 5 groups of A2M6 Zeros to fly LR Cap over the skies of Moulmein ...

56 Japanese aircraft engaged 54 Curtis H81-3A PR x 3 and a few Blenheim's and Hudson's, it was a decisive victory for the allied forces. 23 Zero's destroyed, for 8 losses to the Allies ...

Another stupid move in a litany of stupid moves lately
. I will wait until I have some engineers there and try again to CAP from bases there ... I just hope that there is an airfield left to land them.

more tomorrow

4/3/42: A quieter day, 3 Base forces finally arrive on Noumea, which will amply support 2 Zero,2 G4M1 and a H8k airgroup. I see that he has begun to reinforce Norfolk Is ... I'll be bombing that port and TF's next turn, weather permitting.

At Palmyra, his Dauntless's flew again today damaging a DD, which had been of ASW duty, with 3 others. My supplies are one day away, and my troops are desperate for those AK's to enter the LZ.

Java:
My troops are unloading at Merak, I have 4 Div's in Singapore prepping, as well as some engineer units which are repairing the repair dock and HI. Another TF is one day from Tijiltjap, with 3 tank reg. The other force going for Kragen, is 2-3 days out ... one last special force will be loaded from Banjarmasin to Kragen in the next day or two ... His Dutch airforce are no longer a potent threat but, it's too hard to close all his airports ... so I will accept some losses. I'll need those airports anyway and I don't want to be fixing everything ...

Burma:
Decided to start airlifting a Base Force to Moulmein, it should be complete in 2-3 days as I'm using half my transport planes to do this ... Burma can't wait too much longer with me letting him get total air superiority.

6/3/42:
Palmyra
attack was a failure, my Div has halved it's assault points and I'm deeply worried about future attacks ...

Moulmein: Air dropped a Base Force, and now have moved about 130 Zero's to have a go at his air attack tomorrow ... my airbase is slightly damaged, but I can no longer have him continue it's demise. (should be very interesting and my focus for AAR tomorrow)

Java:
As per my orders troops have landed ... strategy to encircle forces at Batavia ... Div's at Singapore are improving day-by-day. I'll give them 1-2 more days and start tasking them.

Just a quick look at Kyoto Dry-Dock ... Soryu, has had a pregnant pause with her repairs, due to 2 reasons I think ...
1. Lack of supplies (seems to help repair)
2. Damaged AK's unloading supplies there ...
Am going to improve this history and give some detailed analysis when 20 turns have been completed ...

7/3/42:
As promised some air action over Moulmein ...
89 shining new A6M2 Zero's scrambled from the damaged airbase at Moulmein, climbing to their CAP altitude of 13000 ft, all was quiet, except for the hum of their Nakajima engines, occasionally breaking through the cloud cover, the sun warmed their sombre faces.

"Contact-Devil group 10 O'clock high", he was of course referring to the 50 Curtis H81-3A's which had been ravaging my Oscar and Zero force since the war began ... They had started to have a mythical status amongst the younger men.

They were escorting 10 Blenheim IV's & 7 Hudson I's ... it was going to be a pound for pound encounter. The Curtis's broke formation and dived down onto the climbing groups of Zero's, quickly 6 Zero's were downed, more experienced Zero pilots finally got into the fray and started downing Curtis's one-by-one ... they weren't invincible after all !

Noticing some Zero's break formation, they went after these less experienced pilots and the sky became blazon with falling lotus blossoms.

Discipline was as-ever, lax from the Americans, going after the less experienced, they strayed too far from their charges and 5 Blenheim's paid the price.

Upon landing, it was realised that 19 planes failed to return, some have parachuted back home, but it was a tight day.

8 Curtis pilots have been captured by the local troops and marched off to POW camps ... more fodder for the road between Tavoy and Moulmein!

Situation Report: 7/3/42
Japan: economy running at capacity, supplies are being shipped in from Korea and china to suppliment my building of repair docks and plane factories.
Northern Area: Have 2 BB's and some CA's, waiting for Akagi and the soon to be commissioned Junyo (and Soryu if it ever repairs!) ... then I'll make a play for Kodiak ... airbases still building.
China: Yenen, is still my major objective, I have 95000 troops there .. and forces are enroute to stop the flow of supplies into the base ...
Burma:Rangoon is being assaulted by 3 DIv's and a HQ in support. It has jsut fallen to 2, but I want to wait until my tank reg has got to a point to surround him.
Malaya: Singapore is still rebuilding and it's supplies have fallen from 50K to 32K in a few days. My priority is the dock facilities, for now. Also 1 Div and 3 Brigades are still being reinforced there. so the outflow will fall in a few days.
Java:Batavia is being surrounded, and in 2-3 turns I will have stopped his ability to retreat. Setting up air bases, is my major priority as I fear a CV attack in this region.
The NW Pacific: KB is East of Palmyra, hoping to pick off some easy prey. Palmyra is a mess at present, the desire to retreat is overtaken by my desire for revenge.
The SE Pacific No activity
The SW Pacific Limited activity, I see him reinforcing Norfolk Is, but can't do much about this. My G4M1's don't attack !

That's a wrap !

Thanks Widell ..

This is what Grognerd wrote in his email ...

Moulmein was a draw, I had to hit it while it was still
somewhat suppressed as my units had high fatigue and I knew it would be painful, not too bad though. Ha, you did wound AJ Little the best pilot!

8/3/42: Nothing much to report, the air war of Moulmein is on hiatus, I guess he is recovering fatigue or maybe it rained ???

Ditto.

How is the rest of your air war going (outside of the AVG/Flying Tigers)?

Big B, I'll give you an update very soon ... looking at all A2A since the beginning.

NEWS FLASH !!!
9/3/42: Palmyra Capitulates !

I knew they could do it ... (if you've read my last few posts you will see the irony of this statement !)

The War Dept has released this official statement
--- report ----
Having spent the last few days recovering from scurvy and sunburn, the 20th Div, supported by the 51,52,53,61 Naval Garrison units and a SNLF, attacked at first light, a quick battle ensued, with light casualties reported. Tonight the "Rising Sun" flies proudly over Palmyra.
----end report ------

Other rumors from the docks and bars of Kwajalein, paint a slightly different picture:
Ships sunk: CL 1 Tenryu, DD 3, PG 3 PC 1, MSW 7, 4 AK's & 9 AP's.
Ships Damaged: 20+ and some may sink yet.
Ground losses: 6th NLF Unit wiped out. 20th Div half strength !

Some think that revenge killing might have taken place as 12398 US casualties have been reported in the final assault. "Baaah!" Winners write history and make the rules! We'll have Roosevelt up for trial, for starting this war, by the time it's settled!!
---------------

Supreme Commander Diary Entry
Phew ... declared victory! or is it ? An outpost I can't defend, far from my shores, bad port, and within range of "bombers" and hidden threats ... sound 21C familiar ??
<sheathing my sword I think>
So what did I do wrong ?
1. Only one BB/CA bombardment - it allowed my first wave to land safely. The rest were not so lucky ...
2. Not enough MSW (2000+ mines)/ASW support(10-15 US subs)
3. No good cover for my AP's/Ak's (ok, so I have no CAP that could reach, and didn't want to expose my CV's loc)
PC & PG's did a bad job of shielding them. CL's are likewise vulnerable. CA's might have to be employed, to take the brunt of Coastal fire, with high ASW and AA Destroyers, for the subs and air threats.
4. Escape routes not covered by ASW. <thinking again> It really was like Napoleon's retreat from Russia; Damaged and vulnerable, harassed by forces all the way home, more were lost that way than in the fight.
I'm up against a thoughtful Allied supreme commander... He did a good job in knowing the likely routes back to Kwajalein. I had to constantly change course and divert around the threats I could see...<end>
5. Long Range bombers G4M1's, without cover, are too vulnerable to use effectively.
6. Supplies I had sent with troop transports, were wasted due to quick sinkings, or 2-3 turn damage, while troops offloaded. Not enough supplies sent / calculated.

Ok, some analysis of Plane combat in BB1.4 ... **apart from "flying Tigers" which as BigB explains in his release notes(which I include for the less informed amongst you)

[The AVG and the 23rd Fighter Group have been rolled into one unit called the 'Flying Tigers'. Historically, the AVG disbanded as the 23rd FG arrived to take its place, so the two units should not coexist. As both units were popularly referred to as "The Flying Tigers" during the war, I thought the generic name change was appropriate. All historical pilots have been rolled over into the new unit entity. Furthermore, the starting experience rating has been lowered to 65 (a very very well trained unit - but not combat experienced), it still is immune to the Zero Bonus.

Anyway, let's look at some screens first, with comments and then my opinions, based on some past combat ...
1. From the first screen, it is evident that I have lost a lot of planes and pilots, many more than my counter-part. But let's look at the overview first before I comment on this.

2. The Score ...
2.a. So the Allied losses are 1/3 less than the Japanese overall (yellow)
2.b. Allies have had more ground losses as should be expected.
2.c. Large flak losses to the Japanese, once again expected, and partly my fault.(Palmyra (CV based val/kate and G4M1)/ Moulmein /Rangoon (G4M1's) & because I had to use outdated G3M's over Singapore / Manila.
2.d. 1/4 more A2A losses, some due to the "Flying Tigers", but also other instances which I will allude to in the next post...
2.e. Large operational loses due to pilot training, I really think there should be more trained pilots in the beginning, I know the navy hadn't trained much in china pre-war, but I was out of pilots with the first 2 weeks *both air arms) ! And then let the reinforcement rate stay as it is ...

3. Some other data (from combat reports)& observations
(if you like I can post examples)
3.a. LRCAP over a distant base, is as one would expect, rather demoralizing. Especially against the British.
3.b. LR Escort is similarly problematic, even against the Dutch. Zero's and Oscars were lost in numbers against them.
3.c. Small groups of LR Cap over TF's, engaging small numbers of enemies often results in the enemy flying straight through and bombing. No matter what plane. **THIS IS ANNOYING. but I assume has to be the case, given stock's failings.
3.d. Sweeps killed many of my Zero's early on, I no longer attempt this, it's just too damaging. (maybe 3.e. was the problem)
3.e. Altitude settings seem to make a bigger difference -- or maybe I'm just stretching here.
3.f. Zero bonus seemed to be pretty ineffective, except against the Dutch, can't talk much about the US forces, except around the Philippines, where they were wiped out quickly.
3.f. NO CV battle - pending info

My overall 2cents:
Apart from the initial attacks against PHarbor, I have only won 1-2 air battles decisively, maybe this is a good thing. Mostly I think I lose more than I win, and am happy with a Pyhrric victory mostly.
Maybe this is because I'm employing my forces to do 3a,b,c more than just defensive CAP / bad altitude settings.
I'm still looking at the database changes and comparisons chart I've made ... will write more on this subject as the war progresses.
So overall, I guess I'm happy with A2A, given the alternatives, except 3.c. I am worried about a CV v CV encounter though.

Anyway, BigB, thanks for the mod, it's still the best I've tried, a labour of love on your part has brought the conflict more to life for me and my opponent

Thanks Russ & BB56, I appreciate a kind word here and there, to keep me at it ...

Major action over Moulmein and maybe some more observations about A2A ...

I was going to re-write this, but maybe I just want to make an observation first ... not new to many, but notice how, apart from the first raid, damaged aircraft are able to intercept the next wave ... guess it's job 43522 on some programmers, to do list.
Day Air attack on Moulmein , at 30,34

As you can see I've deployed 5 Zero groups, 1 Tojo grp (experimental) and 1 Oscar grp at Moulmein and 2 Oscar's at Tavoy ... it's a huge outlay of my forces, and it meant stripping other area's. My Zero's are no-where near a good experience level, and many of them are below full capacity. I'm waiting for the return of some Daitai's from the Home Is.(disbanded)

NO ESCORT, results in very very BAD THINGS, no-matter the altitude (they came in above 23000--> I had set mine for 17000 feet, the Zero's and Oscar's have a ceiling around 35000)...

--> Allied commander sent back to London to face the music ?
Miss Oh, a Japanese sympathiser recently smuggled this diary entry off Gen. Grognerd's desk ...
I knew when I did it, it was not a good idea, but my recon showed the airbase at 35% supression, I thought maybe I could get above the escorts and do some more damage. Well that Air commander was sacked! The thing I don't want to do is give your pilots easy experience. I can replace the losses and pilots, although the Hudson replacements are low, it needs to be upgraded in the worst way. The B-17E are in production so those numbers are getting better, but all in all that was a spectacular dabacle.

Totals: (just destroyed)
A6M2 Zero: 3 destroyed ...

Blenheim IV: 23 destroyed
Hudson I: 19 destroyed
B-25C Mitchell: 2 destroyed
B-17E Fortress: 7 destroyed

Haven't decided yet to counter attack with G4M1's, but as I haven't seen the Fighting Tigers again, I'll wait to see if I can cause attrition first, before launching a thrust. Timing is everything!

Let me digress back to China for a moment ... I wrote this in another AAR and thought it might be relevant to have said this earlier ...

If you get a chance take Wuchow early, before his mobile forces from Changsha, Hengchow, and city (E of Wuchow) reinforce ... even maybe, before HK. It's much harder later ... Anything in the SE is up for grabs, but make sure you destroy them, no need to give him more mobile forces. I think Wenchow(E of Amoy, was weak in the beginning too ???)

As you know from the release notes: (but again let's go to the video tape ...)
"This vastly increased China has been counter balanced by the fact that most of it is static and may not move. Only 20 Chinese Divisions and 30 Chinese Corps start the game mobile. The rest are tied down in static positions that are immobile – Unless attacked and forced to retreat bythe Japanese. Thus, the Japanese player may ignore the Chinese juggernaut –so long as he does not activate them himself by attacking them. The idea isto recreate the quagmire that really existed for Japan in China. Also Chinese territory has been brought in line with CHS as to the 1941 start lines." but less supplies in 1.4.

My opponent has used his mobile forces well to harass my supply lines, it has kept me busy clearing them. And little time to combine forces to attack bases.

If you just fight in one locale, so-by giving him the chance to combine them, 10+ Chinese mobile Div's in one place might be a bit formidable. ...
Isn't a good defence a good flexible offence, as long as you don;t activate those static units, you're all good ...

I've made a play for Yenen up North, but the going is tough so far, with the view to go E-->W, cutting Burma, eventually ... BUT maybe it's just as flawed !

My Southern troops, now couldn't even take candy from a child, they failed at Wuchow, as I waited too long to attack, and gave him a chance to get reinforcements... now Nanning and Pakhoi are out of the question.

Also moving any troops from the 3 three bases near & including Amoy, just results in uprisings and base damage ... But remember there are 2-3 units in China at the start that are part of the Southern Area force ... grab 'em if you need em....

But as someone else commented on this ... It makes closing the Burma road all the more important ...

Just another snippet of info...

My transport Tf's around Java, are getting attacked by bombers on search... LRCAP is pretty ineffective against this ..

As rtrapasso wrote in a recent post
This is a pretty common complaint in the game design ...
Often, players will resort to putting all their bombers on naval search to get around megaCAP - and it will to some extent.

Avoid this exploit or use it ?
... but Brutus is an honorable man !

Next: Decision time, some choices, pro's and cons & SitRep. Also need to look at LCU reinforcement, stats from Singapore are interesting.

I know I said I'd write about my choices, but I think later, after I have Batavia and Manila. That will be a good time to decide and start preparing...
Manila:
In keeping with this, I have also sent 1 Div and 1 Bde to Manila to try to free up these troops sometime in the next Millenium... As most people agree, Manila, with it's urban terrain, doesn't wind down until US supplies run out. And I've been pounding it with G4M1's and Helen's, for weeks. Not the troops mind you, but the port and airport to force supply use. It's not proven, but I think this is a better solution, less plane losses to AA and supply attrition.
Rangoon:
Tank brigade is 10+ days from encircling, I hate movement in Burma.
Palmyra:
Main 6th Base force fragment on it's way. H8k's are patrolling with Zero's for CAP
Yenen:
Mongolian cavalry is encircling behind their positions, they crossed the river a few days ago, and are heading toward the main road. 10+ days again!

CV's - main KB floating E of Palmyra, still looking for prey. CL Katakami and CS ?? are 14 and 12 sys damage. CV damage is ranging from 5-8. Want to make some impression before repairing.
-Soryu in dry dock (sys-7)
-Akagi heading back to Tokyo after shakedown cruise, my pilots are at 50 exp.
-Junyo arrived in Tokyo a few days ago (it was accelerated), have been waiting for CA's and BB's, and some DD's which upgraded last month, which are still under repair.

Economy
Still 100 days of Oil and Resources... more on this in a EC101 class later.

Planes:
G4M1: 120 +
Zero: 70
Val: 110
Kate: 65

Engines:
Both Mitsubishi and Nakajima expanding again (smallest first)...
According to WiptDecoder, 100 days and 40 days supply respectively.

Waiting for some real CV to CV action ...

*** Battle Stations ***
Carrier Battle Imminent !!
Aboard the Zuikaku, sirens blare "Man your battle stations". As Nagumo orders a 180 degree turn and flank speed to TF1.

There is a new found zeal amongst the men, although is there a subtle change in their faces, or just the wind whipping over the deck. Morale had been falling lately; chasing ghosts had become the reality for this luckless hammer force.

They had not seen any action since their strikes on Pearl, and then the ill founded attempts to subdue Palmyra's airforce and bagging a few transports trying to breach that blockade.

But now ... boy now, news had filtered down, 2 CV's for the taking ... faith in Nagumo to get the job done is high, and a glass of sake for the brave fly boys has been ordered from the locked storerooms. Tomorrow, will it be all that was promised at Pearl, 3 months before ?

Nagumo's face is grey, he has just heard about the loss of 4 AO's & 2 DD's. How did those worthless pilots on Palmyra miss seeing the Americans?

"Damn", how can I co-ordinate an attack with Palmyra's bombers when there is radio silence, he thought...

Resigning himself to his stateroom for rest, his last mutter before sleep overcame him was "Let's hope for clear skies and the American's moving North to get under their land based CAP umbrella" ... Dreams came swiftly ...

Map analysis
1-2 Days ago, my AO replenishment TF, departed the carriers, en-route to Palmyra. It was attacked today, with terrible losses.

DD Kamikaze and Asashio sunk
AO Sata,Shiretoko,Shiriya sunk
AO Erimo (24/6/49)- lucky to survive tomorrow's attacks.
AO Ondo (85/90/49)- fish food
AO Iro (75/55/49) - shark bait

So I failed to LRCAP from Palmyra, and have a few more DD's/CA's/CL's, but honestly I don't think it would have mattered too much.. This is a disaster to my CV mobility, I have only 4 serviceable AO's, with a 1 year gap before replacements arrive.

My transport TF's at Palmyra have been ordered to retreat, although I have sent 3 worthless AK's to charge into the fray, hoping to draw some of his planes away from my CV TF.

I'm thinking of being North of him, although I have a few hours before I'll send the files ... any comments ?

Thinking about my Carriers led me to do more work on my Access DB.

Below is showing air groups with leader ratings on ships. It can search. So (eventually) if you needed to see where (not yet) or what tf/ship has aircraft ... this can do it. Although I'm hands on, in game, it's nice to see where my subs with air search capability are ... etc

It's starting to get to a point where I want to implement this stuff in WITPDecoder, (if the author ever replies) ... but if anyone wants a copy of this DB extension for WitpDecoder, let me know...

Attacking force 88767 troops, 910 guns, 145 vehicles, Assault Value = 1780
Defending force 33369 troops, 57 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 866
Japanese max assault: 32 - adjusted assault: 8
Allied max defense: 909 - adjusted defense: 806

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 5) ...

ehh...I think the combat report would show every man and gun in this hex, even only several hundred trooper actually make the attack. This problem especially significant when one have to accross the river (so a unit automatically shock attack while its comrades who already in this hex not attack).
