Big B, I'll give you an update very soon ... looking at all A2A since the beginning. NEWS FLASH !!! 9/3/42: Palmyra Capitulates ! I knew they could do it ... (if you've read my last few posts you will see the irony of this statement !) The War Dept has released this official statement --- report ---- Having spent the last few days recovering from scurvy and sunburn, the 20th Div, supported by the 51,52,53,61 Naval Garrison units and a SNLF, attacked at first light, a quick battle ensued, with light casualties reported. Tonight the "Rising Sun" flies proudly over Palmyra. ----end report ------ Other rumors from the docks and bars of Kwajalein, paint a slightly different picture: Ships sunk: CL 1 Tenryu, DD 3, PG 3 PC 1, MSW 7, 4 AK's & 9 AP's. Ships Damaged: 20+ and some may sink yet. Ground losses: 6th NLF Unit wiped out. 20th Div half strength ! Some think that revenge killing might have taken place as 12398 US casualties have been reported in the final assault. "Baaah!" Winners write history and make the rules! We'll have Roosevelt up for trial, for starting this war, by the time it's settled!! --------------- Supreme Commander Diary Entry Phew ... declared victory! or is it ? An outpost I can't defend, far from my shores, bad port, and within range of "bombers" and hidden threats ... sound 21C familiar ?? <sheathing my sword I think> So what did I do wrong ? 1. Only one BB/CA bombardment - it allowed my first wave to land safely. The rest were not so lucky ... 2. Not enough MSW (2000+ mines)/ASW support(10-15 US subs) 3. No good cover for my AP's/Ak's (ok, so I have no CAP that could reach, and didn't want to expose my CV's loc) PC & PG's did a bad job of shielding them. CL's are likewise vulnerable. CA's might have to be employed, to take the brunt of Coastal fire, with high ASW and AA Destroyers, for the subs and air threats. 4. Escape routes not covered by ASW. <thinking again> It really was like Napoleon's retreat from Russia; Damaged and vulnerable, harassed by forces all the way home, more were lost that way than in the fight. I'm up against a thoughtful Allied supreme commander... He did a good job in knowing the likely routes back to Kwajalein. I had to constantly change course and divert around the threats I could see...<end> 5. Long Range bombers G4M1's, without cover, are too vulnerable to use effectively. 6. Supplies I had sent with troop transports, were wasted due to quick sinkings, or 2-3 turn damage, while troops offloaded. Not enough supplies sent / calculated.
