My attempt to surprise his night raiders with TOJOs fails as the Tojos dont even touch his Bmbers (who miss anyway).
Zeros, Kates & Vals  (Mostly the JUNYOs air group) hit Kunming and shoot down [or destroyed on the ground] several I-16C fighters.
Another Japanese raid on Thursday Island costs the Allies 5 Warhawks and 5 AirCobrras, for a single A6M3.

75 4 Engine bombers & 63 B-25s hit the troops at Efate, over 200 casualties were suffered.

Another day another strike in Burma flown w/o Fighter escort! Not one but two different fighter groups refuse to fly again! Luckily for me only a handful of Curtis Mohawks are flying CAP and not a single bomber was lost.

At Akyab, Floyd launched a raid to soften up the defenders, and was shocked to find LRCAP over the base:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Imperial Guards/C Division, at 30,29 (AKYAB)

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 11
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 7

Allied aircraft
Wellington III x 18
Beaufort V-IX x 6
LB-30 Liberator x 14

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Wellington III: 4 destroyed
LB-30 Liberator: 2 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
68 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
I was really hoping to do more damage to his unescorted bombers...I lost Two Fighters!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
70 Allied bombers strike from different bases in the Aleutians and sink my two small Minelayers at Attu.

But my Carrier group in the North Sea located and attacked the heavily damaged and retreating, USS South Dakota.
The 1st wave of 4 KATES all miss, but then......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 94,35

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 13
B5N Kate x 16

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 4 damaged
B5N Kate: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged

Allied Ships
BB South Dakota, Torpedo hits 4,  on fire,  heavy damage [And is SUNK!]
DD Rathburne, Bomb hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage [and is Sunk]
That should make him wary about bringing surface forces in to force a landing at Attu. But now he might use all of his carriers. I believe that by now he must have repaired the Lexington, though I have not spoted her at ll. I did get a spot on a possible carrier moving by Canton Island days after my failed invasion.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My troops once more try to force the Allies off the beach at Efate, but the effects of Allied airpower are too great and only a 0:1 can be obtained. The Japanese troops suffer 32 casualties, while the Allies suffer 39; I fear this was my last chance to defeat his land forces at Efate.

Actually, you've cross-pollinated Kipling's poem with a 60's pop song "Do you know the way to San Jose".

What was the weather like during the battleship action? I don't know if WitP is sophisticated enough, but if there were major winds in the area, it could have caused many of the torpedoes to broach out of the water.

Cross polination...hey thats pretty good for a guy that doesnt spend too much time in the garden.
Perhaps thats why I couldn't figure out the next verse

For some reason I don't think that the weather...SNOW...had any effect on how true or untrue the torpedoes ran. In an earlier surface combat I fired around 80 Long Lance torpedoes and only three hit then as well; and that was in and around Luganville in decent weather in the spring.

A hit for Floyd's Night Attacks on "Manpower" at Taung Gyi, although I see no damage at all.
This was followed by several unsuccessful IJN ASW attacks...very frustarting when they all end up "Fail to find".

Several Raids are made over Australia by IJA and IJNAF planes, but the most interesting is made by 11 B-24's flying from Alice Springs! Its only a level 4 now, but soon that might spell trouble for my blocking force on the Darwin-Charter Towers-Alice Springs crossroads.

Another raid is made on Thursday Usland, while only minor danage is done to the base 2 out of 3 Kittyhawks who attempted to intercept my planes were shot dwon by the escorting ZEROs.

24 B-26's and 6 Wellingtons hit Attu's port, putting 3 bombs in one damaged AP and 1 in another, while also hitting the damaged I-31 critically.

Two IJAAF Sweeps are launched in Burma and target the air over the advancing 17th Indian Division. The 1st sweep of 32 TOJOS encountered a small number of P-38's from a detachment of the AVG; 4 Tojos were lost in exchange for only a single P-38. Thankfully on the second sweep, 20 TONYS flew in and downed 5 P-38's w/o any loss to their planes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab
Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19824 troops, 182 guns, 453 vehicles, Assault Value = 570

Defending force 7793 troops, 80 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 174

Allied max assault: 505 - adjusted assault: 95

Japanese max defense: 149 - adjusted defense: 1541

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese ground losses:
160 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

Allied ground losses:
290 casualties reported
Guns lost 16
I bet he was happy to only see 3 Forts. I screwed up and should have had this at least at a level 5!

How freaking frustrating this game can be! (Yet I still LOVE it!)
I have 3 x Divisions, 2 x Brigades, 2 x Tank Regiments, an Artillery Regiment and an Engineer Regiment (in addition to an Army HQ) marching from Yenen to Kungchang. Well for the past three days (turns) they have been stuck at 30 miles, then today they all read 15 miles! What happened? We freeze for three days and then move backwards?? Arrrrgggghhhhh!
Then my Air Raid at Kungchang is less then desirable:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kungchang , at 46,26

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 1
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 13
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 28
Ki-48 Lily x 31
Ki-49 Helen x 18

Allied aircraft
Hurricane II x 19
Spitfire Vb x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 3 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 5 destroyed
Ki-48 Lily: 4 destroyed, 4 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane II: 7 destroyed, 2 damaged
Spitfire Vb: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 13
Not acceptable loss rates or ratio for me.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Another attack on Thursady Island destroys another pair of Aussie Kittyhawks.

While sniffing around in the Southern Pacific we noticed a detachment of Buffalos, so we went to play with them!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Nanomea Atoll , at 87,101

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 21

Allied aircraft
F2A Buffalo x 20

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
F2A Buffalo: 5 destroyed, 3 damaged
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess he figured out that I had fighters on Kiska, but both Sentais were on LRCAP @ Kiska...but yet it seems only one flew (26/56 Tonys) ....Why does the game hate me so?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kiska Island , at 92,35

Japanese aircraft
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 26

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 15
B-24D Liberator x 143

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 8 destroyed, 11 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 3 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 9 destroyed, 23 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
58 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 25
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IJA Forces move into Homan and take a look around, their ensuing artillery bombardment causes over 200 Chinese casualties.

An Allied Assault at La Foa garners 3:1 but the Allies lose nearly 900 men to less then 150 of the rag tag Japanese defenders.

Once again Im find myself nearly two weeks in arears of game time....yesh!

The turn starts typically with an ineffective Allied Night Raud, this time versus Mandalay.
More Allied troops continue to unload at Efate, and many troop carriers are hit by Japanese coast defense guns:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Efate, 73,109, firing at TF 1014
TF 1014 troops unloading over beach at Efate, 73,109

223 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
DD Lamson, Shell hits 6,  on fire
AP Westralia, Shell hits 4
AP Largs Bay, Shell hits 3,  on fire
AP Esperance Bay, Shell hits 3

Japanese ground losses:
7 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
454 casualties reported
Guns lost 3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Efate  at 73,109

Japanese Ships
SS I-33

Allied Ships
AP Largs Bay, Torpedo hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Unfortunately it looks as if the AP was almost fully unloaded.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the Burma sector Floyd raids Mandalay and only a small percentage of my TONYs fly (and no TOJOs):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30

Japanese aircraft
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 37

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 12
P-38G Lightning x 21
B-25C Mitchell x 60

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 4 destroyed, 18 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 2 destroyed
Ki-21 Sally: 1 destroyed
H6K2-L Mavis: 1 destroyed
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim IV: 2 destroyed
P-38G Lightning: 6 destroyed, 1 damaged
B-25C Mitchell: 10 destroyed, 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
11 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 17
While Floyd took heavy loses I expected to see 60+ TONYs and 30+TOJOs in the air; I have three sentais of TONYS and two of TOJOs based at Mandalay.

Then my other TOJO Sentai refused to fly escort and I was lucky not to lose many bombers (again) .....
Day Air attack on 2nd Burma Rifles Brigade, at 34,28

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 8
Ki-49 Helen x 16

Allied aircraft
Mohawk IV x 4

Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then I followed with a raid on Thursday Island:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Thursday Island , at 49,90

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 31
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 8
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 21
Ki-49 Helen x 39
Ki-46-II Dinah x 4

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 30

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3 Zero: 5 destroyed
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 2 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 2 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 11 destroyed, 4 damaged
Kittyhawk I: 1 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
19 casualties reported

Airbase hits 4
Runway hits 26
Not a good exchange rate for me considering most of the fighters were above 10,000 ft and should have slaughtered the P-39s w/o taking such heavy casualties.
hhh

BETTYs from Lunga attacked Floyd's ship at Efate (finally)

Day Air attack on TF, near Efate at 73,109

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 31

DD Lamson, Torpedo hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AP Westralia,  on fire
AP Esperance Bay, Torpedo hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Once again most of the troops appear to have disembarked....drat!
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Efate at 73,109

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 5

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 3

 The B-26's Turned Back!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kiska Island , at 92,35

Japanese aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 5 destroyed, 13 damaged

B-24D Liberator: 8 destroyed, 19 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 34
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More IJA troops cross the river NW of Changsha. With a little luck I will be able to dislodge this force and open up some room for my Tanks.

Ground combat at 45,35

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 41421 troops, 402 guns, 610 vehicles, Assault Value = 900

Defending force 33247 troops, 156 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 927

Allied troops continue to unload at Efate and over 300 casualties are suffered while another AP takes two shell hits from Imperial Japanese Forces.

The SS Truant is hit first by a SALLY and then by a HELEN off Rangoon and then sinks!
Additionally the SS SNapper is hit by a JAKE.

My NICKS intercept the Baeufighters over Pagan (Burma) but then again miss them completely.

An IJN ASW TF up north puts a single hit on the SS Argonaut; a start but not enough to deter her.

Another raid on Thursday Island yeilds better results:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Thursday Island , at 49,90

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 30
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plus more bombing of Luganville.....yeah we know he is going to invade here before he finishes on New Caledonia and possibly before he finishes up at Efate.

I had sent out a TF to test the waters around Nanomea and find in part what I was looking for. FLoyd has a squadron of USMC SBDs based at Nanomea.
My Air Raid was a disaster, especially with my good experience escorts inability to deal with Floyds less numerous F2A's and F4Fs on CAP.

As the day begins the I-25 is spotted and hit by a Sunderland up in the Aleutians...darn!
Another round of ineffective IJN ASW attacks...."fail to find".... "fail to find"..... "fail to find"

Assorted Allied Air attacks against Luganville cause more casualties and destroy a few guns.

11 Hudsons from Funafuti put a few more bombs in to the PG Kaiun Maru, sinking her.

Although Bettys from Tarawa find a target to keep them busy:

Day Air attack on TF, near Funafuti island at 88,104

In a bloddy attack I continue to make progress at Kungchang:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kungchang

Floyd then becomes disgruntled and disappointed with his two attacks:

An interesting sighting near Wallis Island, an Allied TF supposedly containing a CV & CA have been spotted..... could this be the Lexington finally repaired in Sydney and returning to Pearl?

Pieces are moving for the SW opps (lol) SE Pacific Offensive at Nanomea Atoll.
The South Seas Detachment, two large SNLF and three large Naval Guard Infantry Units are definites; the Tank Rgt and an additional SNLF may be held in reserve. Actually I am going to definitely hold back the Tank Regiment for the possibility of Wallis Isand....or to use as a reserve if things get hairy!

But that was definitely an American Carrier ( I am guessing the Lexington transiting back from OZ) at Wallis Island. My Recon flight got greeted by 26 F4F-4's which weren't there before. Also a CV was sighted in a TF at Wallis Island. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

In the 1st test of the local defenses, I come up with some sorry a$$ results....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships

I am noting an increased presence and activity of LB-30's in the Burma theater:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Imperial Guards/C Division, at 30,29 [Blocking road to Pagan]

Allied aircraft
LB-30 Liberator x 17

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Homan

Attacking force 39423 troops, 283 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1264

Defending force 37437 troops, 414 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 787

Japanese ground losses:
726 casualties reported
Guns lost 16

Allied ground losses:

OMG I have never seen such large loses caused by the Chinese in a Bombardment Attack, let alone only four Corps.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab
Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19163 troops, 162 guns, 454 vehicles, Assault Value = 507

This is going "south" very quickly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Amchitka Island
Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 2185 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 61

Defending force 1707 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 14

Allied max assault: 104 - adjusted assault: 26

Both yesterdya and today an Allied TF was spotted leaving Perth and heading towards India. Intelligence estimated several ships including 1 or 2 Battleships! Hopefully My Betty Datais in Broome or those on Java will strike this TF so at least I can get a better idea of its composition.
An American AK hits a mine at Wallis Island. The Carrier is still there I believe!

Floyd decides to "kick it up a notch" at Akyab:

Japanese ground losses:
78 casualties reported

Airbase hits 13
Airbase supply hits 10
Runway hits 59
Port hits 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------
While this attack had more planes it is actually the least of effective of his daily attacks on Luganville; since I believe he wants to knock out my 5.5 inch and 4.7 inch guns more then he wants to kill/disable my men:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 13th Base Force, at 73,109 [Luganville]

B-24D Liberator x 28

As I said before there is increased Allied Air Activity in the Burma sector. Floyd is begining to press me here and he is having some success.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Imperial Guards/C Division, at 30,29

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My attempt to force a breakout NW of Changsha fails. I attacked even though my bombing missions hadn't flown for three days, but with another unit moving up I did not want to what for another corps to reinforce his positions. Perhaps my Tankers are a bit tired and will have to rest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 45,35 [Across the river NW of Changsha}
Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 40636 troops, 391 guns, 602 vehicles, Assault Value = 865

In an absolute shock to me, Floyd's 4 Corps counter-attack at Homan and do so very successfully. They achieve 11:1 odds and drive me from the city gates!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Homan

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Floyd's forces then attack at Akyab following the Naval Bombardment and overrun the Base. While his bombardment did not cause tremendous casualties it obviously caused alot of disruption.
The kicker is that my troops did not retreat back along the track towards Rangoon, but NE on to a Mountain hex toweards Pagan?!?
Just another "quirk" in the game system....I guess?

Ground combat at Akyab

As usually the turn starts with an ineffective Allied Night bombing run in  Burma. If he were using 4 Engine Bombers I'd probably be getting pounded some since night AA even from IJA AA Rgts seems totally ineffective.

A huge raid of 4 Engine bombers hits Kiska:

Day Air attack on Kiska Island , at 92,35

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 15
B-24D Liberator x 168

Allied aircraft losses
B-24D Liberator: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
170 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 21
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 87
I have no real way to counter these raids so it is only a matter of time till he pounds Attu and Kiska in to a defenseless base... unless I can defeat his invasion fleets or get several days of bad weather for the air fields to repair and transfer back my TONYS and TOJOs and hope more of them fly.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Floyd is probing my air defenses in Burma and gets a nasty surprise!
Day Air attack on 133rd IJN Base Force, at 29,34 [Rangoon]

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 17
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 16 [Hmmph had a sentai and a chutai there....40 planes & pilots...oh well]
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 31

Allied aircraft
LB-30 Liberator x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
LB-30 Liberator: 12 destroyed
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Then in and around NANOMEA ATOLL:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Nanomea Atoll , at 87,101
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
D3A Val x 39
B5N Kate x 55

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
B5N Kate: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses

Allied ground losses:
28 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 7
Port hits 1
Port supply hits 2

Boy that SUCKED!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 84,97

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 47
A6M3a Zero x 15

Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 11

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 5 damaged
A6M3a Zero: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson I: 10 destroyed

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga
Ok, But thats alot of fighters damaged after going up against Hudsons!
-----------------------------------------------
Our forces trade bombardment attacks at Mandalay and the IJ forces inflict a few more casualties then the Allies do.
