Users of this site, your attention please. I would appreciate your opinions on what you feel to be a top-rated Napoleonic wargame. I am looking to purchase one, and my experience with this era is rather minimal. Said game could be tactical/strategic( in fact, I would like one of each)
Fire away, and please explain your choices.
My budget and I thank any and all who participate.

As far as present day it hasn't been released yet. When "Empire in Arms" is released that will be the top rated Napoleonic wargame to get. 2nd by todays standards would be "Napoleon in Italy" because of the tactical game you get along with it. The best top rated Napoleonic wargame is still pretty much "Battles of Napoleon" released by SSI back in the mid to late 80's. Pure tactical, but, it came with an editor and with the bonus scenario pak more scenarios than you'd probably play in your life. I prefer turn based with hexes or squares and tactical play, but, there are a couple of real time efforts out there like Waterloo:Napoleons Last Battle and Austerlitz (good luck finding that one) which both have elements of Sid Meiers Gettysburg type of play, but, trying to play the massive scale Waterloo in real time is practically impossible since things move too fast. There's also a mod for Take Commands 2nd Manassas (which is on sale at Amazon.com btw for less than $10 now) that changes the uniforms from civil war to Napoleonic and they have even made the units to form squares now that's pretty impressive for a real time battle. Of course you will have a few quackers that like that AGEOD engine of Napoleon's Campaigns, but, I just don't find it impressive. I don't like AAR's at the end of the day type battle reports. I like immediate reports and information. By the time I get those reports I've forgotten where I attacked or what I was doing in that particular area. Well, those are my choices and reasons. Good luck picking the ones you want. ;)

Gotta echo ravin here a little. The best Napoleonic campaign game I have ever come across is Empire In Arms. It is due to be released this Wed.
The reason? You have seven major powers to play and you don't have to do what happened historically.
For instance, if you had two willing players, you could have an allaince between France and Great Brittain. The Turks could march on Moscow with Austrian help. etc...
Each turn is one month and you start Jan 1805 and finish in dec. 1815. The victor is determined by victory points, not how much territory you control.
Anyway, you can check out the discussion forum under games under development.

By 'quackers' ravinhood means, of course, discerning wargamers capable of recognising an excellent wargame when they see one. On this one, I suggest reading THIS. That said, I haven't played either Napoleon in Italy or Empire in Arms and both look like excellent games (I'm afraid Matrix got my money this month on Advanced Tactics, CC:MT and Harpoon CE though!).

It's a good time to ask your question as there are plenty of good options. Crown of Glory is good game too, and has both strategic and tactical layers. Campaigns on the Danube is both good, and cheap (although a little limited compared with the AGEOD game). Battleground: Napoleonic offers offers a lot of tactical bang for your bug (although, personally I would recommend the HPS Campaign Waterloo ahead of it) and next year, if we are very lucky, we might actually see Les Grognards emerge from vaporware into reality. Or not, as the case may be.

There are 3 battles IMO which define the Nap era as the French - Austerlitz ( a campaign of feint, divide and conquer), Borodino (a campaign of flanking, holding the reserve and battling through a fortified centre) and Waterloo (a campaign of striking whilst the iron is hot and fighting against time- also a campaign without which we wouldn't have had that nagging ABBA song).

1. Austerlitz - Only AGEOD's "Napoleonic Campaigns" covers it well right now. There is another old Austerlitz game (I think here by Matrix but I could never get it running).

2. Borodino/Waterloo - HPS's "Napoleon in Russia" and "Waterloo" do it the fullest and best. But my recommendations here are; 1) Download Volcano Man's alt art containing my revised 2-d counters and 2) Play solo hotseat or PBEM.

For a full Nap Campaign game Empires in Arms looks to be "it" but this time I'm not even considering buying for 3-6 months. I've bought too many "Beta's" this year to be wary. I sincerely hold fears as to the game's ability to handle multi-national diplomacy. No other PC game to date has handled it close to well. What makes EiA different, is the million dollar question?

Hi Jim. Volcano has his own site now at:

http://volcanomods.com/

This gentleman, a tester and designer for many of the HPS titles, has made playability legendary with his art work. You'll find my 2d icons incorporated within the Nap packs.
