NOT FAIR! You just made me remember one of the big reasons I was so grateful to retire. Reading and listening to reams of retarded gibberish regurgitated from all sides to cover the fact that no-one had anything useful to say on the subject.

I agree.

And yes, I was extremely glad when I retired and didn't have to listen to corporate speak anymore.

And I have much, much more time to spend time with my little 6 year old granddaughter and play computer games (in that order).

How can one have joy playing the AI?
I only played until April 42.
In Feb. I conquered Port Morsby. 3 weeks later, 2BBs hit it by shore bombardment. 6 days later, 2 BBs showed up again and one day later, carrierplanes bombed it. So I sent the KB down there. In the following 6 weeks, I sunk one bombardement force after the other together with one CV force after the other - all heading to bomb PM. In late april I looked into the allied account - and they had one BB left which had just arrieved in SF - every other US CV and BB was sunk.
How can this be fun?

I also conquered New Caledonia and in March 42 they invaded Noumea and conquered it. But they didn't even thought about getting back the whole Island, they just stayed in the south! When I conquered it again 2BBs and 1CV were scuttled in Noumea!!!

How can it be fun playing against such an "enemy"?

what does this mean? that everyone who for whatever reason is not able or willing to play pbem should not get the game or - provided he already has it - should stop playing it?

It's certainly true that ALL AI's are pretty poor opponants in the long run..., and this one is as well. But it's ALWAYS there..., and I have yet to hear any complaints that "the AI has stopped sending turns" or that "it quit when I didn't get suckered by it's favorite tactic" or "it played the Japanese through all the fun time..., then just dissappeared when it didn't get an automatic victory in 1/43." Unfortunately there are a lot of PBEM players who aren't much better as opponants.

PBEM will always be the best if you luck into a good and faithfull opponant who want's to "test the game system" in the same general way you do. But if you are searching for an "historical experiance" and you run up against a "gamer" who is only interested in seeing how far he can push the rules envelope in search of "victory", you won't have a very good time either. That's why we see endless versions of "house rules" posted. It's not so much the rules that matter, but they serve as a guideline for "feeling out" a new opponant to see if you are compatible in a "long-term relationship".

It's always going to be a "to each his own" situation..., and the wise designer will cater to that situation.

I play RHS level 7 for its rich complexity and its dealing with the logistics. My fun comes in handling the micro management logistics challange and getting Allies into the war while playing defense against the Axis taking more and more area with me trying to salvage what aircraft, units, resources, oil, fuel and supply I can. I try to ambush any landings by my surface fleets that are not covered by sufficient air or opposing surface fleets that are so much better sailors.

I really enjoy the challange of trying to get enough ASW capable ships (from Hawaii, West Coast, and later DEIs when they are not needed) to the East Coast of Australia to combat those sneaky little buggers that are very efficient at costing me any shipping in the area and later in the shipping lanes to Suva

It is well known that a better play for AI is as the Allied player against the computer. And at that it falls way short of a human opponent. I suggest you find one and dig in your heels for a long long, long game. But while you are awaiting your partner to mail you a turn, I will be playing late into the night, early in the morning or any other time it feels right moving those supply TFs around clicking off days and weeks of game time.

Hey, it's all fun and worth the price of the game.

I play against the AI. I also PBEM when i have a chance though thats not alot these days. PBEM requires an investment over a long period of time that seldom pans out till the end. Thats why PzB's AAR game is so famous. I know of few other games that have gone from start to near finish and how many years has that taken??!!!

Almost as impressive as doing a full BTR campaign.

I played it's predecessor (another GG game but can't remember the name but it wasn't the Battle of Britten) and liked it. Sure bought and tried BTR. I like micro managing (to an extent) and I do not remember why, but I never really got into the BTR. Maybe I was just overwhelmed.

It was called U.S.A.A.F. and I actually managed to complete ONE full campaign game against the AI as the USAAF side. It took over 3/4 of a year in real time to do. Once i got to the end finally and managed in 45 to score enough industrial points to "win" I remember looking at that "Congratulations...you've won the war!" screen in all it's ANSI glory and thinking....wow....was it worth it??!!!

So with almost 200 responses, the forum audience seems split in half between those that only or primarily play versus the AI and those that don't play (or occasionally play) against the AI. I agree that the sample is biased toward those that play PBEM since many if not most customers don't come to the forum and are assumed to be playing against the AI. The AI appears to be the majority way that WitP is played. Not sure we can say much more that that.

If they don't come to the forum, how are they getting news of new patches; is there a 2By3 site where they can get patched-up?

You don't strictly speaking have to come to the forum to get patches. Just logging on to the Matrix site itself is enough.

OK, but once you're on the Matrix site, not checking-out AARs, tech support or just being curious about what everyone else is doing seems almost isolationist.

It's not like (strictly) AI players have to go out out of their way to get here; forums are a great place to pick up tips and amusing tidbits, trivia, etc. Besides, where do they go w/a game question?

Of course, there's the occaisional "sting" posting ...

To pose questions or read and understand answers a certain level of mastering the English language is essential. Thus quite some people who may understand English well enough to play the game may not feel confident enough to post.

Also to get advice about the patches from the "Thread elders", who have already probably experinced the patches and "know where the rocks are"....so to speak.

Maybe they don't go anywhere with questions... Anyhoo, I have no problem believing that the majority of WitP customers have never set foot in this place; that's up to them.

I have never played PBEM as I have never had the time to devote to keep it up regularly.

I am proably missing something by not playing PBEM...as I have read many fantastic AARs. But it is more of a time issue for me. I have not had the time to play regularly and the AI will wait for me to play a turn or 12....but a live opponent might get a bit miffed if I had to make him wait 2-3 weeks between turns.

So for me I would love a WITP2 and be willing to spend a pretty penny....but it must have some sort of AI.

I've seen a couple of gaming sites that carry Matrix patches. The trouble with those guys is you can't be sure that they are hosting the latest release (which they weren't).

Also as far as the casual gamer being up to date - they aren't. I have a couple of friends who owned UV but I was surprised that they weren't that interested in patching up to the latest. Not everyone is as dedicated as us I suppose...

(Edit: which is also a big argument to get it right the first time, as these guys won't be back if they get a bad experience...)

Years ago, I bought my first Matrix games at an Electronics Boutique, but now I rarely see Matrix titles in retail stores here in New England.

As many players today have broadband/dsl, they buy games via digital download, so they're probably checking the forum for patches as well.

Anyway, I was surprised to see from the survey that just under half the players polled exclusively play the AI, which is generally considered a (much) weaker opponent than a person.

These days few game companies support a game past the first year or so.  People who are buying WitP today probably are buying it from the website and probably find out about the patches from the game information page.  Those who bought the game early on may not be aware that it is still updated and assume that WitP is now unsupported like most game titles that old.

I have checked some games for patches, oddly I never thought about it for some others.  I never patched UV when I played it.  I'm not going to bother now since I haven't played since buying WitP.

Bill

I only play against the AI because I would be unable to commit to a pbem game.

As a UV player, I can say that under v. 2.5, the game is still worth playing. However, the UV forum doesn't have nearly the activity as this forum, and there have been times that we UV players have felt like second class citizens, as if we were all expected to upgrade to WitP.

And please don't read anything personal into this post; it's just an observation on my part as a UV player.

For the record I've also played PacWar, which can be considered a "primitive" version of WitP.

For various reasons, I only play as Allies against the AI.  I'm currently playing CHS on Hard and in 4/42, I still hold Manila and Bataan and the IJA just took Rangoon.   Yes, the AI can be better, but as I'm not the greatest tactician, I find the game both fun and challenging, especially with all those subs off Townsville and me having a limited amount of good ASW assets.

If I may stray OT a little bit, but I was wondering...

Does WiTP still sell, after all this time? Is there a steady number of new buyers?

I am amazed (and pleased) that WiTP still gets support from the developers.
