The Ju88, He111, SM79, and G4M had loaded weights of 8-12 tons; the B-26 was 16 tons.

I don't think AUW is the major issue here; the B-26 certainly wasn't worse in the power/weight ratio than the He111. I think the problem was that the early B-26s had a comparatively high wing loading and may have been insufficiently maneuverable down on the deck to be good torpedo planes.

4" clearance when taxying = not viable on anything other than the most high quality strip... And for good measure the B26 was a pig - a real widow maker if you didn't know what you were doing. I thing horrendous accidental losses might also have been a worry!

Interesting historical debate, but playing as the Japanese i would honestly feel a little ripped off if a sqdron of Marauders blew my carriers away with torps. In the game torps are SO much deadlier than bombs, and the number of B26s available could significantly change the play balance. I'm happy to see them NOT equipped with torps.

My understanding of aircraft pools in AE is that each country will have it's own pools (Canada, Brits, Aus, etc.).
So will each country have it's own aircraft upgrade paths and upgrade paths will limited by country?

Will there be any mechanism to supply aircraft from one countries pools to another?

Certainly none of them had a loaded weight of 8 tons. 10 tons and over yes. But yes you are right there is a weight diference, But i think the biggest reason is below.

You are probably right. That was precisely the problem that S.84 had, and instead of replacing SM.79(the one below in my signature) ended as normal bomber and transport plane.

SM.79 174kg/m2
S.84  223kg/m2
B-26 228kg/m2
G4M1 160kg/m2

It is hard to get info on the type4 GP 500kg anti shipping bomb but the twin E bombers of the army and navy used it.

and would like to see it in AE!

Well open up the editor and give them 500 kg bombs....except then they won't carry torpedos.

Problem with alternate loadouts is then you have to specify alternates for 500 different planes and that didn't make the cut IIRC.

Personally I'd much rather see the Betty's/Nell's carry 60Kg bombs when attacking airfields...but that didn't make the cut either.

i was more thinking for the army bombers 250kg bomb dont do as nealy as much damage as a 500kg ,navy planes on long range mission with one bomb! when torp could not be carried to attack ship. In my mod some army 2E Bombers 2-250kgs and 1 500kg as there payload.

Two little peeves of mine:  In the a/c listing could we change "endurance" to "range".  I have no idea how many hexes a plane has with a given amount of endurance.  This would help me choose which planes to upgrade.  I certainly wouldn't want to turn in my P-38's for Spits

The other peeve is when I'm looking at an A/C's stats then click to go back to the list it always takes me to the top of the list.  I'd find it more user friendly if it would take me back to spot on the list I just looked at.

Now that is a good idea I second it if possible Probably harder to implement than you'd think though...

and one more... could we make it possible to upgrade air units EVEN IF there are not the full number of new AC in the replacement pool. Sometimes it would be far more useful to have only a few of a decent plane type than a full squadron of an obsolete type. This is reasonable historically - many squadrons flew with mixed plane types.

It should be possible to upgrade if you have 50% of the relevant unit MAX strength in pool.

With PDU ON it'll work much as it ever did. With PDU OFF you'll have to make the most of what you get.

The discourse above reminded of another question.  If a reinforcement air unit arrives and the pool doesn't have enough planes in the pool to outfit the unit completely, you don't get a full complement of pilots.  You only get 1 per plane assigned.  Will that be changed to bring onboard a full complement of pilots?

Same as it ever was, I'm afraid Mike. If it's any consolation, units can now draw reserve pilots and a/c over and above their MAX strength. The former partake on ops, but the latter are on-hand replacements, obviously.

Will there be any spread of armored airplane quality? I feel that 0-2 is not ideal. I think in current way the value 1 can mean too much diferent quality.

Hi, I'm new to this board. I just started playing my first campaign against the AI and read a lot of usefull stuff on this board. I do not seriously consider starting a PBEM before the AE is up and running.

So what I die to know is, will the Aichi M6A1 Seiran, float plane bomber for the I-400 class Submarines be in the game? I'm kind of a fan of these boats. Even as I guess their operational value will be rather limited late in the war, even with the Seiran and the potential to deliver 800kg AP bombs anywhere, as long as your opponent sees no need to cap bases far in his rear area.
But with the Glen's, or what plane do they carry now? I can not imagine that they are in any way usefull now.

Thanks.

Another question, in upgrade paths can we define more than one step? this is more for units that change mission(fighter to bomber, etc). Or do we have to resort to withdraw unit and then came the same unit with another diferent kind of plane?

Each unit can have up to 10 individually defined upgrades.

I have permission from powers on up to post a 6-pack preview of some of the Allied air sides in Admiral's Edition. This is but a hint of what you might find in the game.

Your mission should you choose to accept it:
1. Correctly identify each of these aircraft and which country they served with.
2. Identify the units which the first and last aircraft served with (upper left and lower right)

The first person to guess 100% correctly might get to pick a few more.

I have no idea as to what units the first and last are, but I think these are the aircraft:

1. RAAF P-43 Lancer (recon version?)
2. RAAF DeHavilland DH-89 Dragon transport (less likely - DH89A)
3. USN Lockheed JO Electra
4. RAF Fairey Seal operating out of Ceylon
5. USN Curtiss SB2c-1 Helldiver
6. RAF Hawker Hurricane IIc

The Lancer is from the RAAF 1. Photo Reconnaissance Unit.
Hurri may be a No.232 Squadron one, based in Singapore

Hi, could anybody explain flags to airplanes: what mean amphibian and float and what is the difference? Are they the same with except float can be carried by ships?

And a pity there is no flag "carried by sub"

When looking at the new screenshots, I noticed that there is more Fog of War.
Currently, you cannot send out Recon flights to hexes where there are no LCUs present. In AE, will you be able to send them to empty hexes?? I hope so as this will be another part of the improved Fog of War. If it remains the same, it will be easy for a player to ID which hexes have troops and send Recon only to those hexes.

The "amphibian" tag enables an aircraft to operate from any base, size 0+, incl. landlocked ones.

The "float" tag limits an aircraft to operating from a size 0+ coastal base only (same as FP's and FF's currently). We use it to define float transports, but you could tag anything, say to make a float heavy bomber fx.

I would say:

P-43A, 1 PRU Sqn RAAF
DH-89, MVAF
Lockheed Electra, US Navy (?)
Westland Wapiti, RIAF
Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, US Navy
Hawker Hurricane MkIIb, No.232 Sqn RAF
