I have played some Demos and have have come down to these games, SC2, Ageod american civil war or Napoleons Campaign, or Commander Europe at war. I have a few questions about ageod games or any on the list . I couldnt tell from the demos but does your troops gain Exp from winning battles? Do leaders gain Exp from winning battles? Can you buy more troops? I know you can buy troops in sc2 and Ceaw but not sure about Exp.

I have reading alot of stuff about these games and playing 3 out of the four games demos. I still cant figure out what game I want. I am kinda leaning towards CEAW or Napoleons Campain.

With the expansion WAW for SC2 it clearly has the upper hand in AI now. It's the one I am looking at seriously now. CE is merely ok, but, the AI is not very challenging compared to WAW now from the reviews and comments of others. I don't like the AGEOD games at all because they are text based after the fact combat windows. Hard to get immersed in that. I like instant gratification when it comes to battles and I like to see what is happening now instead of at the end of the turn or end of the month reports. Just my 2 cents and I'm seriously thinking about picking up SC2 now. Just got "Forge of Freedom" as well (haha take that all of you who said I wouldn't buy a game) ;) Did you download and play the WAW demo? They've put a new one up. Plus there's a 1.08 patch out now for the Blitzkreig portion of the bundle that now includes the pacific theater. So for around $45 bucks you are getting two, two, two games in one. Really three since they added the Pacific side of the war. ;)

I haven't played SC2 or Napoleans Campaign nor do I own them. I do own AGEOD ACW but haven't played it as yet.

CEAW however, is a great game. Simple mechanics, reasonable strategy level, half decent AI. I've enjoyed playing it alot. Very much like a new Panzer General (if you remember that series of games).

However, I noticed you didn't mention Forge of Freedom and Conquest of the Aegean. I would have to recommend these two as the two games that I have enjoyed immensely on and off for the past couple of years. And in my limited opinion of AI, they have the best AI I have seen in any games I've ever owned.

Forge of Freedom is a top notch ACW game with a great, detailed strategic level (what weapons to buy for your troops, where to build camps, hospitals, iron works to maximise production) and, when you need to, a get down and dirty tactical level where you take command of your units against a pretty smart AI. The manual is fantastic and detailed and the game comes with a tremendous amount of options to configure the game to your taste and allows you to easily slip into the game and get to grips with it, adjusting the options when you feel confident. The interface is a little quirky, but once you get used to it, it truly is a great game.

Conquest of the Aegean is another great AI game. It's a pausible real time game (when you pause you can give orders etc - allowing it to be manageable without the game running away from you and making you feel like your always chasing reports. Then there is the great AI....watch it as it discovers you've blocked a road with your AT gun and feel the pounding delivered by the artillery. If that doesn't dislogde you, it will skirt round you whereever possible and, if it can't, it will bring what it can to bear. The game is unique in it's play style and, as an added bonus, it's just dropped in prrice until the 31st December.

But don't listen to me rattling on. You know what you like...I've just given you the two best games, by far, that I have bought in the last couple of years, bar none....well, except Call of Duty 4 which rocks...but that is an FPS!

Take care and good luck with your purchase.

With the expansion WOW for SC2 .....

I've a thousand something posts and I still don't know all these acronyms. I feel for the 3-posters in deciphering all that gets posted around here.

When exactly did "WOW for SC2" (World of Warcraft for Strategic Command 2) come out anyways?

I may finally have a reason to try the game...

Both troops and leaders gain experience. Troops don't actually need to win to do it, but leaders can actually 'lose' experience if they don't. That doesn't make sense in real-life terms, but the significance in gameplay terms is the effect that has on other attributes. You certainly can recruit new troops.. I'm not sure how you could have a Civil War or Nappy strategic level game where you couldn't?

As you are new to the AGEOD games I'd actually recommend Birth of America ahead of either ACW or Nappy. It's cheaper, easier to get to grips with, and plays faster but is just as good a game as either of the others and the best way to get 'into' the series.

I concur that Birth of America is easier to get to grips with than ACW...the reason I haven't picked up ACW yet...but I did play through and enjoy Birth of America.

The reason I got ACW was because I had the taste for American Civil War games...but I found Ageods ACW a bit too daunting to get into. I still have it and will eventually do so...but until then...

I'd recommend the following:  Crown of Glory, Ageod's American Civil War, Forge of Freedom or War in the Pacific.

All excellent games and plenty of fun to be had with them...

I will echo Reiryc sentiments on WITP and COG

But Beware !

WITP will eat up any allotted time given for wargaming for years to come

Get new games at Pogo! They are addictive so watch out. I can't stop playing Ride The Tide. Never got a jackpot but may someday?

I have Forge of freedom and TOAW III, conquest of the ageian, I have played most of tillers battlefround stuff and will be getting those as well. I am a fan a the PG series so CEAW looks good to me but the Ageod Demos I played seem to be cool. I am starting to think The Civil war ageod over Napleons campaign cuse it seems like a more finished product but I liked the Napleons campaigns demo better. But after reading some stuff on bothe forums the Civil War game seems to have a better all around campaign.

Be forewarned, the new Napoleon's Campaigns does NOT yet have a grand campaign (with production and diplomacy and such). It is more of a string of scenarios than an actual "war simulator" like BoA and ACW are. If that matters to you (if you want to levy troops, build up your own armies, promote and demote generals) then you should look into ACW.

I have C:E@W and I just couldn't get into it. I may need to just go back and play. I sort of regret not geting SC2:Blitzkrieg instead (at the time) but now I am happy I did not, because they put out the bundle pack for $45 (Blitz and WaW together). I am not thinking about grabbing SC2 bundle as well. I like the demo and they say the AI is much improved. I'm not as much a fan of the graphics and interface as I am of C:E@W, but C:E@W is missing some nice diplomatic and technology aspects (and missing some of SC2's unit variety). That being said, C:E@W DOES play a lot like the old Panzer General (as JD mentioned) so keep that in mind.

My new favorite Matrix game is Advanced Tactics, however. That game has tons of replay, is simple enough to not make me go nuts, has huge potential in moddability and scenario creation, and does not require playing for several years to finish. It is also relatively cheap. Any wargamer should add it to their collection (although JD will disagree, but I think he just likes to difficult and won't join the AT cult... )

Join usssssss... we have pie... and mind rending Great Old Ones...

SoM, I know you were joking, but I wanted to clarify why I don't get on with AT anyway ...I truly am the exception. I haven't heard anyone say a bad word against it...and there is only one thing that bugs me about it and I can't get past it.

I mainly bought it for the random stuff. I read great things and there is massive longevity in the game. The random scenario creator (like a quick mission builder) is truly fantastic in it's variety and no two battles will ever play the same...but the real issue I have is the random stuff. The very thing I wanted it for proved off putting and it's because I just can't get to grips with the random naming conventions, for cities and sides. The game is truly awesome in replayability...but you have to get over the "random names" - and I couldn't

They are so random, I couldn't even give you an example...but they are just not "real world". I could've lived with keeping the sides Axis and Allied and keeping the names of existing cities and placing them randomly on a random map...like having Berlin in the middle of an island or something...I could've lived with that. But having your side called Hindu Bashari and you capital Elongtide or some such was just really off-putting to me.

The game is great, the mechanics are great, the battles are good and the AI is pretty decent.

My loss - don't make it yours. Just be prepared to see city names and factions you never heard of.

It's true, JD. I did recently get, as my faction, the Twisted Barony and as my capital, Crystal Camp. Very very strange! You can rename your capital, and I wonder if you could edit the masterfile list of names and basically make it a bit more "real life." I wonder why Vic did this, other than possibly not wanting to offend anyone by putting real life factions and real life cities in the game? Of course, if memory serves, the original Empire game also had strange faction names and strange city names.

However, the player made scenarios and mods are very awesome. There is a pretty cool civil war scenario and a Great War scenario that is a lot like GoA (I hear is is magnificent as a PBEM). Also another forum-goer uploaded a very nice "realistic" graphics mod that is easy to use with the random maps (although the pre-made and player-made scenarios take a little tweaking to use it with).

Enough about that though. I just have to rib JD about AT, mostly because I feel we have similar tastes in games, but this is the one place we diverge.

Well I've just read a thread in the AT forum that's made me want to go back and look at what I'm missing. Clearly it's something. The game is raved about, and there are a fair few posters on there...so I'm going to do the manual thing and give it another crack. Maybe, if it's so configurable, I won't have to touch the random game generator, if there are enough scenarios about.

I will look at it this time and keep my eyes and mind open

Out of curiousity... what did that thread say? If you now know of a way to improve the game... is sure as heck wanna know!

BTW, this MOD really makes the AT graphics very nice! Works very well with random maps.

This thread
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1642980

It just suggested I might have missed something.

One of the things I found more than infuriating is starting a scenario with bugger all on the map and trying to work out how to create units and assign them to HQs blah, blah, blah.

I guess that's nothing a look at the manual wouldn't solve...but that's just me. I like to jump in and run, then get the manual out and read as I play....I couldn't just jump in and run with this one...put me off right away...then there were the bizarre faction and city names.

So I'm going to give it a fair crack this time. Read the manual (properly) and have a go at a few games...see if it grabs me. I still have an issue with faction/city names, though...so maybe I'll just never get to use the random generator...unless someone comes up with a mod where real names are used. Although I could see how that could be weird, with Berlin being a few KM down the road from Washington!
