3 AKs have sailed independently from Kendari for Dadjangas to see if they can evacuate any troops before the Japs finish them off. A Jap DD previously damaged sank overnight near Takao. The 2 Chinese CLs on their way to bombard Batan Island stalled so I have changed their orders to a surface sweep past Batan Island before returning to Canton.

The damaged Chinese CL in Wenchow has orders to break out to sea, avoiding mine damage if possible and to head for Canton. The two damaged Chinese CLs in Shanghai have similar orders, but have a sub to avoid and Japanese surface forces just to the North to contend with as well as mines. The Jap landings North of Shanghai are the reason for this precipitous move - I am hoping his blockading forces are covering the landings.

On land the Tsingtao force, defeated again last turn by the Jap 3rd Division will head for Wuhan to regroup while covering the river crossing and the road to the South. There is only one weak brigade at Nanking so this is probably where he will cross. In the North the 1st Cav Corps is heading for Jehol to prevent the retreating troops being cut off by Dixie's latest cross country flanking move. It is touch and go if the retreating troops will make it in time. The leading elements (1 brigade and an HQ) will shock attack over the river at Chifeng this turn (I really hope he has moved his garrison!). The corps and a brigade are one day behind and the brigade pushed off the railway onto the road has moved 30 miles so far. It's looking pretty hairy up there...

Apologies for the slightly blurry screenie and the childlike scribblings - I am learning Paint (slowly...)

A supply convoy reaches Lahaina with 12500 tons of supplies. Dutch Harbor and Anchorage have received 10000 tons and 20000 tons respectively.

The damaged Jap DD Nara falls in with my two CLs... (I will have to check these shills are right because the sides are as Baltimore...)

10 DDs were ready at Mare Island and sailed for PH. The rest will stay in Mare Island and either be escorts or assigned to North Force. I will try to free up at least four to support the squadron of older ships forming up at Canton Island. Here is a list of expected air reinforcements. I am thinking of sending next patrol squadron to Midway and having the blimps patrol off Mare Island.

4 more DDs arrived at PH and sailed straight away for Midway where they will replace the last four unmodified Pac Flt DDs. The slow element of the Seattle convoy arrived and is unloading the rest of the 144th FA Regiment.

Sub reports from Kwajalein lead me to believe that Martin's heavy units are there so I have changed the sweep by the Pac Flt to a bombardment attack on Wake Island. They are 4 hexes out so they might stall...

In the PI I have moved S-16 to Manila where she will load a cadre from the Naval HQ for Canton (if a support point will fit on one of these subs - which has only just occurred to me). S-9 has orders to leave her patrol off Takao and head for Manila. Fuel is arriving at Rabaul and Canton. The three AKs that lifted the last of the 103rd Base Force off the beach at San Marcelino are sailing for Batavia, now that the Dutch will not risk their ships supplying Manila or Guam. 8 gunboats patrol offshore to disrupt any minelaying operations that Martin might mount despite the fact he has to pass through an RN sub patrol line. The two semi-fit Chinese CLs will arrive next turn.

In China the last elements of the 15th Corps should reach Chihfeng tomorrow. The unit will then follow the rest of the retreating mobile force into reserve.

I have noticed that shipping is harder to spot without aircraft.

A snap invasion of Wake is easier to carry out in WPO than in WiTP.

However, whichever side controls Wake is going to have to conduct supply runs across a significant amount of open sea. This presents targets for the opposing player to hunt down and kill.

Against the AI, I have been allowing the AI (Japan) to keep it, while I conduct a war of attrition against it's shipping. A human player would properly conduct escort missions, limiting losses, as well as pulling out when the situation appears to warrant that. (The AI doesn't, it's too stooopid.)

It seems that Wake can be a permanent investment of the Battle Fleet. Is that where you want to park it?

I don't know. I was thinking of taking it and then building it up, with the fleet to protect the build up, before moving on to a new target as I cross the Pacific building supply bases and port facilities as I go. I have never got that far with a WPO game so was looking for ideas.

The AR Prometheus sailed from San Diego for PH. The AK Admiral Cole was taken in hand for conversion to Destroyer Tender. I can't remember whether I mentioned that I have previously converted a couple of ARs, an AMC and a Q-Ship? The first DD to complete upgrade at PH is ready. She'll wait for the others before shipping out to join the Squadron of older ships forming at Canton Island, which is where the CL USS Chicago is now heading. 24000 tons of fuel are being discharged at Midway. The Jap force that was at Kwajalein last turn has gone. I will leave destroyers at PH to protect it and the most damaged BBs will also be sent to repair there. The Pac Flt will have to stop by PH after they have returned to Midway to replensish ammunition. S-8 used her last torps at Guam last turn and is returning to Canton to replenish.

S-16 managed to load an HQ fragment at Manila and is on her way to Canton. USS Rochester has joined the 2 semi-fit Chinese CLs Hai Chou and Chao Ho and has sailed to a point south of Batan Island where they will escort the crippled Chinese CLs that fled from Shanghai.

In the North the 15th Infantry Corps has reunited, but not in Mukden where one brigade was waiting. Somehow the Corps has reconstituted 180 miles east of Mukden. They are on their way now and will hopefully make it in time. I have had a few bizarre happenings in China...

First things first, the Diplomatic fallout...

The Dutch Government has issued a formal protest about the horrific unprovoked attack on a neutral Dutch flagged tanker approaching Manila. Future shipments will be escorted by Dutch Torpedo Boats to ensure such an atrocity does not reoccur.

The British and French Governments have lodged a formal protest about the close Naval Blockade being enforced at Shanghai by units of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The evidence...

<Laughter> - good show!

To tell the truth, I wasn't worried at all - that's what screening units are for...

Seeing that it takes 60+ hits to kill a PT TF I'm beginning to rethink my previous contempt for such little beasties...

BB Nebraska and her escorting DD (the core units of the new North Force) have now joined up with the Dutch Harbor troop convoy. 2 DDs are ready at Seattle and are sailing to join North Force. 4 DDs have left PH to join the South Pacific Squadron at Canton Island. The screenie is the South Pac Sqn as it currently stands.

2 DDs from the USN China Station have disbanded for ASW upgrades at Singapore. The China Station HQ is now at Canton. Martin's forces have entered Manila so getting fragments out is now a priority. S-8, on her way back to Canton to re-arm, has been diverted to Manila. S-15 is heading to the same destination from Guam and S-4 from Naha.

In Northern China I made a huge foul-up and sent the 15th Corps to Mukden instead of Chihfeng. They are now heading in the right direction. Let's hope they do not pay for my error. Kaifeng has now become the rendevous point for my mobile units as the Southern units are not up to any more battles without support from the fresher (i.e. previously undefeated) Northern units.

With the bulk of work complete at San Diego, the AD there is moving to LA. 7 San Diego DDs are released to Pac Flt and will move to PH. The 6 unmodernised DDs with Pac Flt at Midway have detached and will sail to Mare Island to fit their ASW weapons. Pac Flt is now in severe need of work and replenishment and will proceed to PH.

North of the PI the Rochester tf has joined up with the damaged Chinese CLs, hopefully for an uneventful run into Canton. There is a lot of work required to regain an offensive in theatre as most ships are damaged. S-9 loaded a fragment of the US 31st Infantry Regiment at Manila for Canton. Martin now has 7 units in Manila. S-6 has damage of 10/33 and is headinf for Canton. S-7 will move to Takao to take her place.

In China 15th Corps is heading the right way and I hope they'll cross into Chihfeng before any Japs do. The move to unite my mobile forces at Kaifeng still looks to be the best plan. The threat to Nanking has made the British realise that they could not hope to hold or resupply Shanghai, so next turn they will move most of their forces to Hong Kong. A token force will be left at Tientsin and Shanghai. The French only have token forces present so will make no adjustments.

Vehicles lost 1

This isn't going to last long, even with the hex bonus, as I have only 1 level of forts...

3 upgraded DDs left LA for PH. AV Aroostock and 2 DMs loaded more mines at Mare Island and sailed for Midway. 2 DDs left Seattle for Dutch Harbor and duties with North Force. 2 DDs arrived at PH and sailed for Canton Island after replenishing.

Here is the current state of defences at Midway. There is no fleet cover at the moment, but there are a number of subs patrolling offshore.

Just for info, here is the current state of play at Rabaul. The Dutch are opening secret talks with the US over basing rights in return for territorial guarantees.

S-16 is unloading a Naval HQ fragment at Canton. She will sail for Manila again tomorrow. 6 China Station and Far East DDs disbanded at Singapore to commence upgrades. The damaged CL New Orleans and a damaged DD disbanded at Diamond Harbour.

In China the bulk of the British and Commonwealth forces in Shanghai are leaving for Hong Kong. 15th Infantry Corps made it to Chihfeng and is moving on to join 1st Cavalry Corps at Jehol before they both move off to join the Army forming up at Kaifeng.

Here is the current state of Canton's defences. Their weakness is a severe worry to the US Navy, but there are no Chinese units available to assist. SW Pac units will be prepped for Canton and sent as soon as they are ready to be deployed from CONUS.
