I've looked in the manual and in other threads but I cannot find an answer to this question. What does the number on the counter represent?

Sorry for the newbie question!

It represents the strength of a unit.
Here is the formula:
"6.11 Counter number Formula
The numeric value on the counter of a unit is:
Counter Strength = Power Points * ( rdn / 100) + ( Power Points * ( xp / 100 )
The  Power  Points  of  all  subformation  types  in  all  included  release  scenarios  are  set  equal  to production cost / 100." (page 49, light manual)
Hope that helps.

rdn stands for readyness.

I believe that SFtype level does not count against counter strength. Equal amounts of Rifle with the same readyness and XP will have the same counter strength as a Rifle IV unit - but not the same combat value in the least. An easy mistake in the beginning is to only look at the counter strength to predict the outcome of a battle. Usually more important factors are terrain, troop mix and quality, readyness

Thanks guys!

Naturally about 5 minutes after posting I found it in the manual.

Thanks for the tip as well. Looks like I was making a beginner mistake and just using the number on the counter. There is much more to this game than meets the eye.
