I wanted to thank everyone who helped in my most recent book slection. Lundstrom's The First Team was excellent! I learned so much about the early art of the war and the development of American Doctrine that I recommend these two books as MUST READ.

How about this book I just got an ad on called: Fortnight of Infamy: The Collapse of...[/b]? Is it worth it?

I thought his follow-up on the Guadalcanal campaign was even better. While Coral Sea and Midway have been analyzed to death over the years, I learned much about the carrier operations of Aug-Nov 42 that I had not known before.

It also describes in the same great detail all air operations based on Henderson field during the same period.

not all. The periods where USN VF's operated from Lunga. To fill in some of the blanks you need Richard Frank's work as well.

Hi, Nik!!

Yeah - Lundstrom concentrates pretty much exclusively on the naval carrier aviation side of things, with some about the Marines, almost zip about Army or other air ops.

I am about to Eastern Solomons and agree with the earlier statement that the second volume is as good--or better--then the first.  Frank is the BEST coverage for all facets of Guadalcanal (I require him in my WWII college course) but this level of detail for the Naval air is amazing.

I prefered the Guadalcanal book over the original, but they are both excellent.
