JW or some of the others that are working with the code...could we get a brief summary of how intel is developed for a particular unit or hex?

I use Bodhi's Utility and have 2 years of intel on some of these places. On certain hexes, it looks like I have droves of info and on others, I have none for the same time period.

I can think of some of the factors I would put into the code:

Number of units in the hex increases intel
Size of bases increases intel
Higher leadership/inspiration of commanders decreases intel
Proximity of enemy units increases intel
Later in the war increases intel
Presence of HQ units increases intel (more message traffic to intercept)

Please, please, please...drop a tidbit! Its not a game breaker for anyone to know how the intel inner workings work!

Thanks,

Speaking of intel, one of my all time favourites is

"Radio transmissions detected at San Francisco."

O rlly? Americans have radios in San Francisko?

That pretty much sums of Japanese intel capabilities.

Has anyone had ANYTHING but radio transmissions for the Japanese?

JW, can the Japanese have anything but transmissions?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Biggest flaw is the total lack of intel on Japanese ship movement and location. Allies got pretty good at this. It would help my sub campaign if I knew something about his convoys, where his subs were and an occasional tidbit about a warship.

Without this signet is pretty useless. I get so I just don't check it much.

But you do get some intel on ship movements.
eg. '25 Regt loaded on AK Kongo Maru heading for Truk'

Unfortunately its almost totally useless. I also need to know WHERE ITS SAILING FROM I don't have enough subs to cover all the shipping routes and hundreds of ocean hexes.
Perhaps we can hope that Woos might address the original question of this thread as he is dealing with reporting in AE.
Lets all go over to that sub-forum and ask the question there

If you had paid attention, there's a good chance that on some turn earlier you saw an intel report "25th Rgt is located at Kagoshima", from which you can now guess the shipping route. That's where Bodhi's utility comes in handy. Of course, I can't get it to work on my computer, so I have to track those intel reports by hand...

I have had a spotting report which told my an SS was moving to a certain hex.  When it arrived there was an ASW group there.  The sub didn't leave the hex after that.

Very early in my game against John 3rd, he got intel that the Allies had 40th Division on an AP heading to Pago Pago. This was pretty disastrous for me - he knew where I wanted to build up and he mounted a big operation that put a stop to it.

Conversely, as best I can tell, I haven't gotten a single genuine report that the Japs were prepping for a base that they actually moved on - IE, John seems to prep units for decoy bases, but I haven't had him prep for a base that he actually assaulted. I think he's decided that it's preferable to ensure surprise than to prep but risk a leak.

Does anybody else follow that philosphy? I think it's a good one for the Jap player.

WHOA! TIMEOUT! You mean you can actually get some good INTEL as Japan? I have 2 games going, and I honestly stopped checking after many turns of "Radio Transmissions Detected at Seattle", and similar nonsense. I have yet to see anything other than useless Radio Transmissions. Am I missing something here? Should I be checking those every turn?

He is probably prepping for the bases he is going to attack...your AV is hurt way to much to not prep your main units. He is probably prepping units for decoy bases that are never going to go anywhere anyway such as backwater China and Manchuria garrisons as well as HI guys.
