After, everyone's opinion I went out and bought Oblivion and Galactic II. After many many weeks of waiting finally my graphics card software problem was fixed. And by no less MS support.A technician came in remotely to my computer(as I watched him expertly move through mess). So I'll have to give them credit where credit is due.

But now to my question. Oblivion wants to hang up and freeze.
1) the game suggests 800/600 graphics. My desktop set up 1280/1024 is that the problem?
Even though it seems when I start the game it atomatically goes to 800/600

2) Or is the problem that I'm missing a patch?

3)Or should the anti-virus be turned off while playing?

All system requirments are met by my computer. The game box says that ATI 9800 series is a suppoted video card(which is what I have.

Any suggestions, observations. I love to play the game but I'm only able to get out of the jail cell then the game freezes

I play Oblivion with a MSI 8400 GS video card(costs about $40 USD) using 1300x 700 res on a 32 inch HD monitor with about 30 fps, some intense combat reduces this to about 25 fps.
I have v-sync enabled and 4x anti-aliasing enabled along with HDR enabled.
Plays just great, top-end video cards can be overrated.
I had a 8800 GTS video card that played it on just about max settings.
My other system specs are Intel E6600 conroe cpu, 160 GB Hitachi HD, 2 GB OCZ ddr2-800 RAM and an Asus P5B deluxe mobo.
If your game crashes it could be your video card overheating or unstable memory.
So many factors can affect how a game plays, maybe your power supply is failing.

I agree with some of the other choices already mentioned and thought I would add a few more that were not mentioned.

Sim City 3000 Unlimited
Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Gold
Freelancer
Patrician 3
Planetside

I know Planetside is an MMO but have played it since it came out, only missing a few months hear and there. Planetside and Patrician 3 are the games I have played the most the last 5 years.
