I was under the impression that Canada was under self rule, and consequently, had no direct ties to the UK, save for perhaps an emotional attatchment. ( the French canadians, notwithstanding. ) So the celebration of the regining monarch's b-day doesn't make a lot of sense to me, unless Canada is celebrating their president's or PM's birthday.

lol...But what do I know...I am american and dont even understand my own govt half the time.

yes, we all see that you don't understand it

Canada ... A federation now comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.
......
The monarchy of Canada, also known as the Canadian monarchy, is a system of government in which a hereditary monarch is the sovereign of Canada, holding the position of head of state; presently Elizabeth II, officially called Queen of Canada (French: Reine du Canada), who has reigned since February 6, 1952. The Queen, her husband and consort, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, their eldest son and heir apparent, Prince Charles, and other members of the Canadian Royal Family, including the Queen's other children and cousins, undertake various public ceremonial functions across Canada and on behalf of Canada abroad. However, the Queen is presently the only member of the Royal Family with any constitutional role.

Though the monarch does hold several powers that are hers alone, most of the Queen's constitutional and ceremonial duties in Canada are carried out by the Governor General, at present Michaëlle Jean, who maintains direct contact with the monarch, but is still sometimes referred to as the de facto head of state. In each of Canada's provinces the monarch is represented by a Lieutenant-Governor. The territories are not sovereign, and thus do not have a viceroy.

This thread has devolved into "Let's see who can stump Arkady."

Try this one:

On whose birthday is Confederate Heroes Day celebrated in Texas?

The bonus question:

What is being celebrated on "Juneteenth"?  To my knowledge, "Juneteenth" is celebrated only in Texas.

lol
- Robert E. Lee
- Abolition of slavery
but twenty five other states recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or state holiday observance

btw do you know  this joke (I hope that patch will be up soon or we will overhelm this forum with spam):
It was the first day of school in Marietta, Georgia, and a new student named Suzuki, the son of a Japanese businessman, entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American history. Who said 'Give me Liberty, or give me Death?'"

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Suzuki, who had his hand up. "Patrick Henry, 1775," he said.

"Very good! Who said 'Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth'"? Again, no response except from Suzuki. "Abraham Lincoln, 1863.", said Suzuki.

The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed. Suzuki, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do." he heard a loud whisper: "F**k the Japs."

"Who said that?" she demanded. Suzuki put his hand up. "Lee Iacocca, 1982." At that point, a student in the back said, "I'm gonna puke."

The teacher glares and asks "All right! Now, who said that?" Again, Suzuki says, "George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991."

Now furious, another student yells, "Oh yeah? Suck this!" Suzuki jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher: "Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!"

Now with almost a mob hysteria someone said, "You little sh*t. If you say anything else, I'll kill you." Suzuki frantically yells at the top of his voice, "Gary Condit to Chandra Levy 2001."

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh sh*t, we're fu***d."

Suzuki said, "The Taliban! 2001"

Excellent!

Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general who nearly succeeded in splitting the United States in two (and which would have presumably perpetuated slavery in the Confederacy), and Martin Luther King, Jr., the black civil rights leader killed in the late 1960s, share the same birthday, so in Texas we celebrate both men simultaneously, even though, on the surface, they appear to stand for irreconcilable positions.

Juneteenth is June 16 (or June 19 -- I can never remember), and is the day the slaves in Texas supposedly learned of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.  I didn't realize other states had the same holiday.

I enjoyed the joke too.

On a different subject, Arkady, I just got a copy of "History of the Czechs and Slovaks" by Antoine Mares.  I'll see if I can stump you about the Czechs after reading the book.

On the surface? Appear to stand for irreconcilable positions? Seems to me that, even if one looks under the surface, its pretty clear that they were diametrically opposed positions. Pretty hard to argue that the Confederacy's chief strategist and commander was not inherently in favor of continuing slavery, the larger question of states' rights notwithstanding.

Only south of the Mason-Dixon line does one get such a conflicted view of appropriate state holidays.

Thanks for responding, PaladinSix. I was hoping someone would bite.

I wasn't born in the South. I came from the North about 25 years ago. No Southerner would ever consider me a Southerner. I'm still just a damned Yank. When I first came to Texas, I was surprised to see monuments to Conferate soldiers, because the Confederacy was always synonymous with slavery. I was surprised further to learn there was a Confederate Heroes Day, again because the Confederacy was always synonymous with slavery. When I learned Confederate Heroes Day was on the same day as Martin Luther King Day, I was appalled. I thought that took some real balls on the part of the Texas legislature.

My understanding is Robert E. Lee had a plantation and owned slaves and that he signed up with the Confederacy out of loyalty to his home state, Virginia, which had sided with the South. My understanding was that Rober E. Lee had misgivings about splitting the country in two. I don't think slavery was central to his thinking.

Ironically, not all Virginians felt the same loyalty. Virginia itself split in two, with West Virginia getting created out of a slice of Virginia.

I can admire Germans who fought for Nazi Germany based upon their dedication, sacrifice, and decency, even though I think the cause they fought for was repugnant.

Robert E. Lee was a very religious man, as were most of the Confederate generals. Today it's hard to reconcile a Christian tolerating slavery.

I wouldn't classify Jesus as an active abolitionist. I believe Soloman had slaves. Slavery was a fact of life back then, and I don't think it was ever seriously questioned.

Texas schoolchildren say two pledges of allegiance every morning. One pledge is to the United States. The other pledge is to the State of Texas. I don't think my home state had a pledge, and if it did, I never learned it in school, and I certainly wasn't required to say it every morning at school. It never occurred to me a state would have a pledge of allegiance to itself. My allegiance was to the United States.

For Northeners, the Civil War was about slavery. If Southerners wrote the history books, the Civil War wouldn't be about slavery. Slavery was one of the prominent issues that exacerbated the tensions between the rights of the individual states vis-a-vis the government of the United States. Only a small percentage of the Southerners fighting for the Confederacy owned slaves.

Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King seem like strange and irreconcilable bedfellows. After nearly 25 years in Texas, I see it like pride in the past, pride in the present, and reconciliation between the two.

I think Americans owe Martin Luther King more than they will ever know or appreciate. He chose to make change peacefully. Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq are good examples of the merits of making change through violence.

"Truth will vanquish." Arkady can educate us on who said that and under what circumstances.

Happy to oblige. I figured someone was looking for an opportunity to explain that particularly bizarre Texas logic.

I'm an outsider looking in, so perhaps a native Texan could explain it.

For all I know, Texas was celebrating Confederate Heroes Day years before Martin Luther King was even born, and Martin Luther King Day happened to fall on the already established date for Confederate Heroes Day.

It's tempting to assume the Texas legislature enacted Confederate Heroes Day as a counterweight to Martin Luther King Day. If true, that'd be dissappointing. Both Martin Luther King and Robert E. Lee deserve better.

We've waited and we have the same knowledge of why we're waiting. . . But, c'mon fellow grognards.
There's only 1 solution... and I know the majority of us can't stand it.  Wait some more! However, in
the meantime, may I suggest a good game of War in the Pacific? Have you tried this beast? She one
awesome game!  Not to mention, the upcoming release of the expansion!  Or, have you tried Carriers
at War by SSG/Matrix?  That's one I am definately going to grab very very soon! (( Thanks Mr. Bush for
my gaming $! )).  By the way... Matrix Games... there is a good marketing opportunity, "Summer Stimulus
Gamer's Sale".  Oh... can't do that... seems to be an issue with a JTCS Manual getting in the way!

I think that I know exactly what is going to happen!

The download will become available.........    'Everyone' will download the file into their JTCS Downloads folder.......

Then almost everyone will wait, a week? Maybe more to see if there is any 'problems'!   Wanna bet?????

To be honest, as soon as I get the update, I am going to start a new game with a good buddy of mine and plan on winning! I have some strategies that I want to put into action as soon as is possible. Until then... I am playing all kinds of games!
