Playing a generated campaign game for the Desert (North Africa) 1942, The Axis are deployed on the right side instead of left. Is this normal? Also the picture for a german mineclearing tank is upside down? Not sure what it is actually. Why does the 20mm gun on a Pz-II sound and act like a 20mmAA? Mark

Howdy Some answers: a) Probably. I'm not sure how the starting side is determined though. Probably has to do with the opponent. b) See www.achtungpanzer.com and their Pz III section. there is a good pic of the Minenraumpanzer III. It has a raised chassis and sure looks bit funny. I trust this is the tank you meant? c) Because they got designated same sound file I'd say this is because both are automatic weapons that fire short bursts. I think the AA-gun had drum magazines of tens of rounds while the tank gun fired from small (10?) round clip. The both guns also have weapon code 222 which means a 'rapid fire - drum fed cannon' which fires 1 type of ammo, but because of the higher volume of fire it has a bit special treatment. Voriax

1) dunno 2) must have a look .. but if you mean "bottom up", no, that's shurely not the case 3) It's essentially the same gun, only with shortened barrel IIRC. Fired even the very same ammo ... Arralen

It may be related to the Western Front selection setup. But in Lybia/Egypt it was esthetically more pleasing to see the Brits on the right and the Axis on the left. I can see it reversed for Tunisia. b) See www.achtungpanzer.com and their Pz III section. there is a good pic of the Minenraumpanzer III. It has a raised chassis and sure looks bit funny. Yes, that is the tank and the pic is definitely upside down or at least undecipherable. c) Because they got designated same sound file I'd say this is because both are automatic weapons that fire short bursts. Okay, but I remember this weapon firing like a cannon not a flak gun in previous SPWaW versions. I'm seeing four air bursts everytime it fires. It's crazy. Voriax

IIRC, player 1 is deployed on the left, player 2 on the right. You can shuffle things around in a scenario by taking the player 2 slot (but have to give up first move/shot). Campaign play?... probably SOL. My understanding is that the computer will sometimes place the human player on the right side. In the case of NA campaign and figuring an east-west orientation horizontally, it figures that Germany would be on the right. Can you play it that way? Does it work? I've been playing the long campaign as Britain starting as early as possible (Jan '39?). Every battle in the desert has me (Britain) on the left & the computer (Italy & Germany) on the right. I know that it is conventional to show maps where top = north, but there are no text on the generated maps that say this. Your right. I do think and play in a conventional sense of direction where top is North. But this was never a problem in previous versions. It is only now starting to play havoc with my orientation and it's going to take some getting use to. I wonder if there will be a way to choose an orientation before play. Mark

Yes I can play it, but why the change from previous versions where a generated North African campaign always had the standard orientation with top as North (with the Sun rising in the East and setting in the West, etc, etc, etc.) The way it is now I feel like it is the Commonwealth who is heading in the direction of Cairo and not the Axis. Somewhat unsettling but not unplayable.

One other comment about orientation. When playing the Eastern Front or Western Front options for a generated campaign, the standard map orientation seems to be correct. I have only noticed ths in North Africa. BTW, thanks to you all for your hard work and dedication on this project. You are an exceptional group of people and I have enjoyed this game from its original release under SSI through this latest version. You have made a good product so much better. Mark
