You can watch the combat take place in which case you are told the size of each weapon with each hit. As for the combat summary/report, that's a patch or WitP issue as it would take some work. We are trying to go gold this week.

As for the 11 damaged planes when only 9 attack, this is a result of the fog of war being on, which distorts information on how many planes were damaged destroyed and may report higher totals than the number attacking. With fog of war off you get exact, accurate numbers.

As Joel pointed out, there's no lack of information in the game as to what kind of weapon hit each ship. However, the post-animation combat result text simply lists the number of hits, heavy damage (if present) and fire (if present). Until UV is actually shipping (in which case we could post a full replay), you'll have to infer from the reports of the engaged forces what kinds of hits are involved.

Be assured that I'm not wondering while playing what the Kirishima got hit with. I saw that 16" salvo from the Washington go through the deck armor in all its painful glory.

Regards,

- Erik

Every thing has a price...the IJN lost at least 6 cruisers due to their oxy powered torpedoes exploding on deck due to fires. Hard to tell with others whether it was a contributing factor to their loss. Kind of a trade off really...they had great torpedoes right up until they started getting hostile fire aboard...then things seem to have gotten FUBAR very quickly with all those oxy powered torp mounts and reloads laying around. They really probably would have been better off sticking to a more conventional (and safer) wet-heater/air powered type. Due to their excellence in design and exhaustive live fire testing they still would have had outstanding torpedoes.

Wonder if the IJN ships greater propensity to take serious damage due to onboard fires, and the USN's better skill at damage control is factored into the game?

No and yes. Since we have a preference option that allows for better US damage control, this makes the US ships a lot tougher than their IJN couterparts.

Joel: Does UV model the extreme unreliability of the Mark 14?
This is important because it would mean in many cases when a U.S. sub
in UV managed to get a hit on a ship, the torpedo simply wouldn't
explode. This could make a big difference in a campaign in UV and was
a major problem with U.S. subs for a long time.

Also, in surface combat does the UV combat model take into
account the range the various shell types are being fired at and
whether the shells are hitting the belt or deck armor of their intended
target? This is important because some ships had heavier armor
in different places and, depending on the range it was fired at,
different shell sizes and types would sometimes hit the side
of the ship and sometimes the deck armor. A ship often had to
get into a certain range envelope to be able to penetrate the
armor of a certain type of enemy ship. This, of course, has a
big affect on surface naval combat and how a battle would play out.

Greetings, I can't wait for this game. Anyone want to set up a Matrix League once it comes out? IS it possible in a PBEM game to have more then one player per side? (first player makes in put and saves game without ending turn and then sends to next same side player who gives his orders ends turn and sends to first opposing player etc?)

I've seen a lot of the AAR's posted (AAR's provided by the game) but haven't taken the time look at them in detail. Are you playtesters finding that the Japanese Long Lances are making hash of the American fleets? Or at least that the Long Lances are having much higher success rates than the U.S. torpedoes? How are they influencing the battle itself and the tactics used? How 'bout it Allied Admirals? Are you all nervous about engaging the IJN at night in close quarters?

I am reading Fighting Aircraft of WW2. Its says the IRVING (Nakajima J1N1) did not start flying sorties over solomons until Spring 1943. I am not sure how reliable this book is. I am assuming the -R is the long range reconnaisance plane

Just looking through the AAR and saw this:
CDR J. Sutherland of VF-8 scores kill number 3

This is the same guy Saburo Sakai shot down on August 8, 1942 over Guadalcanal. He was badly wounded when Sakai saw him bail out and land on the Island. I read this in Franks "guadalcanal". He survived.

We got to one turn from the end before we now need to move on to a new game as we are getting some new data files that need testing. The last few days saw very little activity other than Japanese fighter sweeps over Henderson Field. At first the losses were fairly equal (50-60 fighters per side with losses around 10 each), but then things turned bad for the Japanese as the long flights from Rabaul wore out the pilots. The last sweep had something like 15 Japanese going down for only about 5 Allied planes. I ran the game the final turn so you could get a point total. It scored a Decisive Allied Victory with 2948 to 2358 points (25% more points is a decisive, 5% more is a marginal). If my math is right, this is right on the border of a marginal and decisive, so it could have turned out either way had we actually played the last turn).

I see in this AAR that A6M3 Zeros are attacking Lunga. I am reading "Fire in the Sky" and he says A6M3 zeros from Rabaul did not have the range to make Guadalcanal in August 1942. Maybe in this AAR they are coming from a base contructed by October.

The A6M2/M3 had sufficient range. The A6M5 with the installation of armor around the pilot's seat and self-sealing gas tanks (IIRC), did not. One problem for the Japanese, however, was that the range was so great that an A6M2/M3 with wing tank damage was unlikely to make it back to Rabaul owing to fuel loss. The subsequent campaigns for New Georgia were all about taking out the Japanes eairfields that they belatedly started in late 1942. There's a real good book on this: Munda Trail by, IIRC, Eric Hammel.

There seems to be quite a good list of actual pilots that flew. Joel, Is it possible to edit / add to this pilot (or any other person) list?

I think the M3's are coming from Shortlands/Buin. In the game I don't think they can fly from Rabaul. I always base them in Shortlands/Buin and target Lunga so they can join in with the Rabaul raids when needed (or have them fly LR-CAP over Lunga so they can engage enemy transports flying into Henderson Field).
As for the pilots, yes, I'm pretty sure that user created scenarios allow players to add pilots to the database and they can be attached to specific units.

Hello Ron, No I don't like cannon fodder. Suppose in a chess you spend countless hours trying to come up with a TN (theoretical novelty-a move not seen before in tournament play in a specific opening series of moves) But the first time you use it your opponent without blinking responses with a move that refutes it outright. Is this not better then in the game you, knowing the move to be easy to refute still make it and your opponent after running most of his time off his clocks makes the only move on the board that fails? In one case your honest effort results in your learning something in the other while you may gain the win it is only by your opponents failure. I would rather lose to talent then defeat incompetence.

I was only poking fun, seeing as everyone (ME TOO!) seems a bit awestruck by your posts of late. Question for you...can you direct me to a decent order of battle source online for this time period and theatre? Most of my literature is still in storage as I've only lived at my new home for a few months.:)

Thanks, Ron.

If you can keep your head
when all about you men are losing theirs
and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
but make allowances for their doubting, too.
If you can wait but not be tired of waiting,
or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
and yet don't look too good nor talk too wise,
If you can dream but not make dreams your master,
if you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with triumph and disaster,
and treat those two imposters just the same,
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
and stoop and build them up with worn-out tools,
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss,
and lose and start again at your beginnings
and never breathe a word about your loss
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
to serve your turn long after they are gone,
and to hold on when there is nothing in you
but the will that says to them "hold on,"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
or walk with kings nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
if all men count with you but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
with 60 seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
and which is more, you'll be a man, my son.

SPECIAL NAVAL LANDING FORCES
The SN LF were organized by the navy from naval personell. Several were organized at each of the four Japanese Navy Shipyards (Kure, Maizuru, Sasebo, and Yokosuka). About 10 of these units had been organized by the beginning of the war in December, 1941, and an equal number were organized in 1942. There were no standard establishment figures for the SNLF. As the situation required, more men might be added to one unit, or a unit might be split into two or more independent parts.

Generally speaking, the SNLF consisted of 500 to 1000 men each, with varying numbers of machine guns, mortars, and howitzers. The 3rd and 5th Kure, 5th Sasebo and 5th Yokosuka sent 2404 men to Papua, of which 1086 were casualties. These units also sent less than 500 men to Guadalcanal.

Along with the 11th-16th Naval Construction Units and the 80th -- 85th Naval Garrison Units, the SNLF were often part of Naval Base Forces in the Solomons, which had been established at Guadalcanal--Tulagi, Shortland, Rabaul, and Kavieng.

I also have all the old OB's from the first Guadalcanal game by GG that I still play from time to time (quite alot recently)on a emulator
These are good for what ship when but the LCU and Air reinforcment are abstracted rather then the detailed units we will be seeing here.

Speaking of the Guadalcanal Campaign (GG old sim) OOB...I remember writing him as a kid at SSI and asking him how come the USS Meade and a number of Porpoise and Gato class boats (blockading Truk) were missing. The reply was something like, "Geez, get a life!" Shades of Shatner at a Trekkie convention.:D
