Are these upgrades (Clemson and Wickes to Manley) worth doing? Seem to be a significant drop in ASW (8 to 5) and speed (30 to 24) in exchange for cargo capacity of APD. Convert all? Convert none? Convert a handful and leave the remainder as DDs? I hate giving up the ASW capability of these destroyers, as they seem to be the only effective ships against the Jap subs in the Coral and Solomon Seas.

I would say it depends on your situation.  How badly do you need the ASW vs Fast Transport?  I generally convert a few for the more dangerous transport runs with the rest following as better destroyers and frigates start to arrive.

Please note that not all of them upgrade to APDs - some stay as DDs (get radar, better AA etc). The conversion choice is set in the database by what happened to the ships IRL.
The only way I know for sure is to open the database editor and see which class they individually upgrade to....

The problem is that in the game it´s always a disadvantage to convert DDs to APDs, due to the facts stated by the original poster AND because of the fact that a DD has 250 cargo capacity while an APD only has 180...

Hmmm....

Checked the database and couldn't find any Clemson or Wickes class DD that doesn't upgrade to Manley.

I'm playing CHS. Could this be different in stock?

Good point. Thanks.

I had about half of these destroyers convert before catching on. I'll have to make due with the remainder for my ASW TFs. And it's not as if the APDs are worthless in the ASW role--about the same as the Australian MSWs. Plus I have SCs equipped with Mousetrap arriving in the area now.

Wbm4x, that’s the question isn’t it? Is it worth it? Some will say yes, for their reasons, some will say no, for theirs.

APDs can carry troops/cargo and run supplies and reinforcements to front line areas by Fast Transport TFs. DDs can hunt & kill subs. One can’t do the other. It all depends on what you “need” and what you “want”.

true in real life, not true in the game... in every aspect you´ve mentioned the DD is better. Better in ASW due to more DCs, better in running supplies and troops due to 30% more cargo capacity...

Ouch .. got me there.

Guess I'm thinking more of AE .. no DD, DE, or whatever, will ever be better in running supplies and troops than an APD, and no APD will ever be better than a DD in ASW. Sorr y for the confusion.

John

Will their later upgrades return some of that ASW capability?

I had most of my four stackers upgrade to APDs before I saw the dropoff in ASW capability (and I never realized that DDs have a higher transport capacity than APDs!). I turned off upgrades for the few remaining ones, and I am hoping that the '44 upgrade will improve the ASW capabilities of the APDs...

The other alternative is to download WitpTracker and it will tell you what, specifically will be upgraded and when ...found here http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1774229

Do the APDs have any benefit in loading/unloading costs or transport efficiency over DDs?

I go ahead and convert them to APDs.  Frankly, you're going to have scads of DDs with excellent ASW capabilty.  The fact that your suckifying about 10 old ships into APDs, well, I don't actually care about that level of micro-management.  Ideally, yes, I'd be fine with saying "no upgrades for Clemeson/Wilks DDs".  But for every other ship (and DD), I do want the upgrade.  Yes, I could "select only DDs, and set upgrades for them, and then turn off the upgarde individualy for Clemson/Wilks".  But it's a PITA, and as I said, I've got plenty of DDs anyways.  So I don't bother turning them off.

DDs and APDs carry supply at the same level as an AK.

APDs can carry fuel/oil. DDs can't.

APDs transport infantry at 1/2 rate of an AP. DDs at 1/3 rate.

A bit of a mixed bag, depending on how you use your Fast Transport TFs.

I agree that this sort of micro-management is a headache and certainly not worth it in the long-run. But I'm at that point where ASW assets are critical, and I don't have enough of the newer US DDs available. Most are escorting my CVs or slowly trickling into Pearl to fill out a SC/Bombardment TF or two with my repaired BBs. I suppose I should start sending some of these DDs to Australia from Panama City as they arrive.

I convert them. They are useful and have a range boost so make reasonable escorts when you are short. They are also cheap, relatively fast and flexible transports for dynamic moves and dangerous re-supply missions. I like all the different flavours of ships - it make it more interesting. The choices we will have on how to configure our fleet in AE are already blowing my mind - if you think this is a question worth asking (I agree it is btw), just wait until it is your choice as to how many long range ASW escort conversions you have against fast transport conversions as well all the other flavours of four stacker...
