Elsewhere in theatre:

The Japanese carrier in the Timor Sea finally caught up with a Dutch SCTF that had been evading it in the hope of sneaking back to Ambonia for a night strike against the unloading transports. The CL De Ruyter was badly damaged but is slowly limping to Derby to get rid of her flotation damage, the DD Banckert was sunk and another 3 Dutch DD's are steaming to Darwin and its dry docks, and more importantly its LRCAP cover.

Another 4 Japanese ships were confirmed sunk today, an AP, an AK and two MSW's. Two more ships were hit by submarines with another couple receiving dud hits or misses.

Ichang fell yesterday and as the final units march into the region, the push westwards will begin.

The following screenie shows the current situation in Malaya. The 18th Division is still bogged down in the mountains but a strong force is trying to force the flank through Kuala Lumpur. KL is well garrisoned but i must maintain control of the railway in order to keep on conducting a fighting withdrawl to Singapore. I have left two Dutch coastal subs based at Singapore should herb try and outflank my front with a landing at Kuantan, but the sheer amount of shipping around Luzon and Java, most of his heavy surface units hace been id'ed in these two theatres, makes this unlikely at the moment.

In Java, more Japanese troops have landed taking advantage of the bad weather that has grounded my 'deadly' B-10's (they've already accounted for 2 DD's and a couple of AK's already). The outlook for tomorrow is for more thunderstorms, damn weather is also closing the aerodromes of Northern Australia as well, so it will be up to the subs to snipe at the landing forces again. The KNIL regiment made Kragen and Hawks and Demons have intercepted transports for the second day running. The regimental artillery is setting up for a bombardment tomorrow.

Java is currently looking as a Japanese Carrier Convention centre. H has some parked outside Sorebaja and another, now positively identified as a CVE, just West of Koepang. Ships of all shapes and sizes are converging on Java. One stream heads towards Merak, another towards Kragen and a large convoy has been spotted heading SW near Pontianak. B-10's once again are peoving their worth with another 8 bomb hits on different vessels. The Dutch Air Force again surprised me by downing two Kates from the above mentioned CVE. This time Brewsters flying LRCAP from Sorebaja.

The Lexington successfully pulled away from Maleoap and is now heading towards Pearl, which is still ringed by subs that elude my numerous ASW killer groups. A first wave of base force reinforcements has arrived, One will head to Palmyra, one to Adak and one to Attu Island. Likewise teo assault engineer units from Karachi are being railed south to Dacca.

A quiet day at sea with only 1 small coastal class AK and one PT sunk. In the air, the loss ratio was dramatically in my favour, surprising considering we're still in Decemebr 41.

29th Decemeber 1941

What an action packed turn.

The night phase saw an AP sunk at Takao by the SS Shark. She sunk one more fish into the crippled transport and down she went. Then a PT squadron intercepted a reinforcement convoy heading to Kragen. One ship was hit by two torpedoes and one torp hit another transport, while all of them were raked by machine gun fire. Over 100 casualties were reported and the damaged transport left burning and slow moving in the water.

The KB, parked just outside Sorebaja, had a field day both with my Brewsters and ships. Heres a damage report of her three strikes on Sorebaja:

DD Whipple, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Van Heutsz, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
SS KXVI, Bomb hits 4,  on fire,  heavy damage
TK Iris, Bomb hits 1
AK Van Lansberger, Bomb hits 4,  on fire,  heavy damage
DD Alden, Bomb hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Toendjoek, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AK Van Outhoom, Bomb hits 1
AVD Mercel, Bomb hits 5,  on fire,  heavy damage
DD Edsall, Bomb hits 1
AK Modjekerto, Bomb hits 1
AR Castor, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AP Van Overstraten, Bomb hits 1,  heavy damage
AS Janssens, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AK Parigi, Bomb hits 2,  on fire
AK Ban Ho Guan, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AK Batak, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AP Van Landsberge, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
DD John D. Edwards, Bomb hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Boero, Bomb hits 1
AGP Poolster, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
AGP Serdang, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
SC OJR-4, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
SC OJR-3, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
SC OJR-2, Bomb hits 8,  on fire,  heavy damage
AP Rochussen, Bomb hits 2,  on fire
AGP Poolster, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Van Outhoom, Bomb hits 1
TK Marpessa, Bomb hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Balikpapan, Bomb hits 2,  on fire
AS Janssens, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
TK Iris, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Senang, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
DD Whipple, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Modjekerto, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AK Van Heutsz, Bomb hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
AP Van Landsberge, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
SS KXVI, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
AK Tasman, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
TK B. C. J. Grootes, Bomb hits 1,  on fire
AK Op Ten Noort, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
DD Alden, Bomb hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage

Surprisingly enough only two SC's and one submarine were sunk but getting those damaged ships out will be difficult indeed.

More gratifying were the multiple bomb hits (again!) achieved by B-10's. Yet again they prove to be highly accurate. Both Herbie and myslef are at a loss to explain this but im not going to complain. I'm not going to complain about the following either, well worth the two Buffalo's shot down on escort duty.

In the afternoon phase two brave Dutch PT boats took on the pride and joy of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Ill bet Herbie's heart skipped a beat when he saw this pop up on the combat replay!

Sad to report no hits were managed

Elsewhere Kragen fell and Herb made landings in Hollandia. Mavis's out of Eniwetok have started recon flights over Wake Island. SS Plunger took two depth charges at Rabaul and is now limping its way to Sydney, i am hopeful of her survival. In Luzon artillery shells were exchanged in Clarke Field while an attempt to take the Baguio Pass by coup de main was beaten back all the way to San Fernando. In central Malaya the 18th Division has been reinforced by the 2nd Division. As such the 15th Indian Brigade has been ordered to withdraw, rearguard action will be provided by the 28th Indian Brigade.

Game has reached 1/1/1942. Here are the scores so far. The vast majority of sunk ships are small Dutch AK's that the KB has savaged in the past two turns. Likewise the majority of air-air losses are Dutch and Buffalo pilots, especially on the day 1 KB strike on Singapore.

2nd January 1942.

The Japanese invasion of Java contiues apace. Depsite the valiant efforts of the Dutch Air Force, submarines and army units, the Japanese Army managed to make two landfalls on Java. At Kragen the Jap has moved south west and caught the defenders of Madioen by surprise and threatening Sorebaja's north flank. Still he hasnt had it all his own way:

--------
Sub attack at 18,61

Japanese Ships
CL Oi, Torpedo hits 3,  on fire,  heavy damage *sinks*

Allied Ships
SS Truant

------------------------------------

CL Oi in better days during a pre war tour of Hong Kong and Singapore.

A snapshot of China.

Ive been able to turn the Japanese back at Wuchow, well a reconnaisance in force at least. Ichang has fallen about a week ago and the central army pushed the Jap Brigade on its way to Hankow and Sinyang. The bulk of the central army still has to reach the front while units from Honan have begun reinforcing the central army's left flank attack on the latter.

The situation in the Dutch East Indies has developed rapidly. Herbie has enacted a massive double pincer movement of the SRA. Naval bombardments of Balikpapan and Tarakan are now being followed by invasions. As always my subs are snapping at his heels and hoping to damage any captial ships. I quite like this strategy as though i have ecavcuated a lot of shipping, i haven't been able to withdraw as many assets as i could have. The AMC Kambila is bearing down on Merak to have a pot shot at his ships What has surprised me is that despite the multiple number of bomb and torpedo hits my swordfish at Singapore have achieved he still hasn't closed Singers down. I now need to work on getting the B-10's out of Java as some of them are up to 70 in exp.

Situation in DEI 6th January 1942

In China the central front is where it is all happening. Sinyang has been assaulted but only 0-1 odds were achieved but the first reinforcements from 34th Army Corps should be arriving tomorrow and a second assault will go in the day after tomrrow. I need Sinyang in order to anchor my flank on it as i assault Hankow. So far he only has two brigades and support units in Sinyang, ownership of the railway to the NW allows me to feed more men quicker than him. Wasn't it Rommel that said the winner was the won with most battalions? If all goes well Sinyang's defenders will not be able to withstand a three Corps assault. The IJAAF has evacuated the city whereas i have rebased the 20th Fighter Squadron (P-40's) at Honan should he send Anns or Sonias to harass my troops.

Southern China has also become quite fluid. I have strong positions around Pucheng and on a couple of hexes on the Hangchow-Nangchang supply route. 3 strong corps face the Japanese 22nd Divison while Herb has maneouvered 2 brigades behind this position. Supply flows from Pucheng so for the moment the position is solid. More worrying is a four division move on Changsha, though i have strong blocking forces in its path. Sinyang is still invested and awaiting the last of the assault forces.

Kesselschalcht of gargantuan proportions in the DEI and my hat goes off to Herbiesan and a great strategy. His initially made landfall at Merak and followed it shortly after with airborne and airlifted troops into Kragen. The last of the pincers is a landfall at Malang. Japanese transport ships have been under the constant cover of carrier borne aircraft and heavy surface units. They have constantly been harrassed by PT boats, unnervingly accurate B-10's and submarines.

I have to evacuate one more squadeon of B-10's at 70+ exp and then the Dutch will go in a blaze of glory. Ive switched ABDA HQ to Southeast Asia command, does that mean that it will reconstitue at Aden?

Reuters 12th January 1942

Chinese forces have finally liberated the city of Sinyang. After a week of bombardments and tentative, probing attacks the Central Army yesterday claimed an important victory. Chinese infantry had overrun the Japanese outlying positions in a dawn attack, catching the defenders by surprise. By midmorning the city outskierts were engulfed by fire. The Japanese High Command gave the order to disengage during the afternoon and savage house to house fighting ensued as a rearguard of a brigade of the 32nd Japanese Division protected the stream of vehicles leaving the city to the south east. Chinese soldiers had secured the city by nightfall and begun digging defensive positions on the south east appraoches to the city...

In game terms this means...

--------
Ground combat at Sinyang

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 55110 troops, 288 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1625

Defending force 19433 troops, 65 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 374

Allied max assault: 2864 - adjusted assault: 2302

Japanese max defense: 390 - adjusted defense: 293

Allied assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Sinyang base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
419 casualties reported
Guns lost 7

Allied ground losses:
506 casualties reported
Guns lost 18

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

------------------------------------

34th Army Group will now move onto Hankow to add its punch to the attack there. Its presence should tip the balance in my favour but i think Hankow will be a harder nut to crack. 33rd Army Group will remain and fortify Sinyang and await reinforcements before pushing on. One Infantry Corps will move 60kms up the railway to reinforce the river defences there. Sinyang also yeilded a size 3 airfield that will soon be put to good use.

The garrison at Wake Island, which has been reinforced with dive bombers, search planes and Flak units, and RCT enrotue, keeps on reporting daily recon missions out of Eniwetok Island. Submarines are partolling the sea lanes between Eniwetok and Kwajelein and the approaches to Wake. CV Saratoga is 120 kms to the NE of Wake Island as intell has begun picking up signals suggesting an attack on Wake is imminent. His carrier forces are still in the SRA area so im hoping i can surprise any incoming invasion force. As of last turn my carrier still hasnt been spotted. Eniwetok has been mined by subs and yesterday DE's (according to recon) docked at its port.

Developments around Eniwetok Island.

A troop laden transport struck a mine my submarines had left lying around . A submarine on picket duty picked up a contact with a convoy that seemed to include crusiers. It was detected beofre its heading could be established. Nonetheless i expect Catalina's out of Wake to pick it up tomorrow if it docks at Eniwetok or approache Wake.

Sorebaja fell today and with it a large number of damaged and barely floating ships in its port due to a couple of strikes by the KB. In New Guinea he has taken Lae and Milne Bay by para drop more or less at the same time as i reinforced both New Caledonia and Thursday Island. Once he wraps up Java he will have troops to spare, probably to mop up on Luzon and then target PM. The KB has been spotted heading eastwards south of Morotai heading towards Palau and my hunch is that he will use it to support any operations on Wake. Im hoping that the nonstop action of the KB since the opening day makes Herbie think it needs some RnR before committing it to action.

In China two japanese attacks were foiled by chinese troops using defensive terrain to maximum effect. A guerrila unit was attacked by a weak brigade to the West of Hankow and held its positions awaiting the reinforcement of an infantry Corps. In Hankow a massive Japanese attack failed to dislodge the well entrenched Chinese forces investing the city. The recently arrived Army Group fresh from Sinyang, now referred to as 'The Rat Corps', due to ther proficiency at street and urban combat, gave the IJA a very bloody nose:

Ground combat at Hankow

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 125168 troops, 595 guns, 80 vehicles, Assault Value = 2586

Defending force 55277 troops, 203 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1451

Japanese max assault: 2457 - adjusted assault: 1251

Allied max defense: 1461 - adjusted defense: 3137

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
7189 casualties reported
Guns lost 63
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses:
772 casualties reported
Guns lost 12

What was a quiet backwater has all of a sudden become an active and interesting theatre. About a week ago Japanese paratroopers dropped into Milne Bay and Finschhafen. These were followed by naval landings at Shortlands and Buin. CA Penascola, basing out of Noumea, was sunk trying to interdict these forces by Betties from Rabaul. Inconsequential air raids on Port Morseby have been coming from Rabaul but the bombers have had little effect bombing from high altitude. ANZAC Command had ordered the development of Thursday Isnald to safeguard PM's flank. The squadron of P-40's based there have transferred to Port Moresby, Wirraways going in the other direction (af stacking HR's). Yesterday level and dive bombers hit a CA convoy carrying troops heading West, probably going to land at Buna. I expect Herbie to hit Port Morseby from the air tomorrow hence the transfer of the P-40's.

22nd January 1942, Port Morseby
USAAF 16th Bombardment Squadron, Major B.Berg (OC)

In response to reports provided by Catalinas of No.20 Squadron RAAF we took off at 09:45 on a course due East. Enemy heavy surface units were spotted on a bearing 270 degrees westwards. The squadron was flying at 10,000 feet with Hudsons of 2/24 Flight RAAF below us at 6,000 feet. No fighter escort accompanied us.

At approximately 11:48 ships were spotted below us. Visual confirmation was made of four cruiser type vessels and the order to dive was given. Dive began at 10,000 feet with aircraft releasing bombs and pulling out of dive at 2,000 feet. 1Lt Wilbourn led the first flight of four aircraft to dive. Intense anti aircraft fire was put up by enemy ships. Two near misses and one aircraft lightly damaged. 1Lt Moorhouse dove in with the second flight. One near miss but three malfunctioning. Bomb release mechanism did not respond on three plane. 2Lt Heath took in the third flight of planes. Two direct bomb hits on Japanese crusier confirmed, one scored a hit on a gun mount destroying ordenace. Two more near misses. 2Lt Berg led the last flight on hit ship, possibly CA Aoba, with no further hits. All pilots report large number of troops on decks of enemy ships bombed. Level bombers report no hits, coordination with RAAF squadrons excellent. No pilots injured or lost.

Damage reports:3 malfunctioning bomb releaeses
2 Planes damaged by anti-aircraft fire both expected to fly tomorrow

Elsewhere in the theatre:

1st AVG sprung an ambush over Wuchow and IJAAF Ida's suffered 4 losses and 6 damaged aircraft.

More ship movements in around Eniwetok. SS Bass missed on a torpedo attack and suffers a damaging, but no where near fatal depth charge hit. She has been oredered back to Pearl while SS Cachalot will take up station in Eniwetok.

SS Gar continues its deadly cat and mouse game deep inside Japanese Home Waters. It torpdeos a PG off Wakkanai. I have 4 submarines making a nuisance of themselves around the coast of Japan. The idea is to get Herb to spread his naval and aerial ASW assets far and wide.

On the northern tip of Sumatra submrines and small transports are evacuating two Dutch base forces. One will head to Port Blair the other to Cox's Bazaar. I was using Sabang as a stop off point for aircraft evacuating from Malaya and DEI to India. With Rangoon under siege by the Imperial Guards Division i now need to evac those base forces before the small window of opportunity closes. The CV Indomitable is providing over watch and one last Brewster squadron remains in Sabang to provide CAP over the remaining ships.

In China, Herbie was able to push back the initial probing attacks to the SE of Sinyang but the overall strategic picture will become clearer once the Battle of Hankow gets settled. At the moment he has numerical advantage but being an urban hex, he's not been able to eject my troops. The boot will be on the other foot when i try to capture the place. He also has air superority for the time being but i hope to station two sqaudrons of Hurricanes in China soon.

Heres the current OOB's at Hankow. I have roughly another 1,000 AV's enroute.

Disappointed i didnt get a second pop at his cruisers. They didnt make landfall at Buin so i am hoping i scared them off. As predicted he hit Port Moresby and the skies over the base were full of Nells. About 60 of them scored 4 runway hits but they were still to high to be effective, 25,000 feet, and no planes were hit. The P-40B's transferred yesterday rose to tassle with the Zero escort and had four of their number shot down, still they did their job by unsettling the bombers.

1st AVG once again tore into the Ida's over Wuchow downing another 5 and damaging 4 more. The garrison there was reinforced with an artillery regiment and according to the CR we now have equal AV's but im hiding behind size 4 fortifications In China, however, the main action is revloving around the Battle of Hankow. the screenie below and notes will explain in more detail.

1) An artillery regiment and Infantry Corps are marching westwards to reinforce a guerilla unit that has been fighting a Jap Brigade on its own for a few days. Its good positions in the hills are allowing it resist a numerically stronger unit but i suspect the Japanese supply level is not too good.

2) Four Infantry Corps (700 AV's). Three are a day out of Sinyang where they will await the arrival of three Cavalry Corps from the Nroth before attacking units to the West and South-East and clearing the Japanese supply lines to Hankow. Due to the lack of armoured units the Cavalry will hopefully give me the mobility to encircle Japanese units and cut SLOC.

3) 1200 AV's will shock attack a Japanese Brigade tomorrow and then start to move South-East and eventually assault Kiukiang, staying on the West side of the river. If i do decide to cross into Hankow, will i automatically shock attack? There is a road crossing the river here so is that a bridge or will i shock attack regardless when crossing a river bridge or not?

Elsewhere in the theatre, SS Cahchalot was pounded by ASW elements in Eniwetok. AN S-boat will take up station and hopefully take a shot at the AP's docked there. In Japanese Home Waters the PC hit by SS Gar yesterday sunk and the Gar is now steaming to Parashima Jimw where intell suggests an AP is heading to loaded with troops. Im assuming that Herbie is reinforcing his northern flank just as im doing in the Aleutians.

AK Kanalon II, trying to sneak westwards was found and sunk in the middle of the Phillipine Sea.

Japanese forces have landed at Tulagi, it seems the reinforcement of New Caledonia didnt come too soon!!

Catalinas out of Wake Island spot a Japanese convoy on a North-Easterly heading, right through my sub picket line. Submarines are redploying to intercept and harass these ships, an APD and AP have been identified. CV Saratoga has been ordered to move to 60 miles north east of Wake and get its planes ready for launch. THe Dauntless squadron on Wake has also been put on full alert and the outlook for tomorrow is clear skies. The 279th RCT is also arriving tomorrow, and not a moment too soon by the looks of it!!! Hopefully my carrier forces will see action tomorrow and give the Jap a taste of his own medicine.

Jap convoy simply disappeared off the scope. Saratoga will remain on station for two more days before heading back to Pearl for some RnR. With the 279th RCT now almost completely landed and AV on Wake upto 200 plus level 3 forts, 78% to 4, im going to now concentrate on building up its airfield. and laying some more mines.

It all seems to be happening in the Solomon Sea. Those cruisers i hit a few turns ago were spotted near Milne Bay and a second convoy was spotted a few hexes behind them. It may be a reinforcement convoy or a PM invasion force. As of yet no CV's spotted, though the KB was last seen in Palau so it may be close behind.

Well those cruisers were headed to Port Morseby which they bombarded accompanied by two battleships. The Japanese ships sailed safely by the minefields and managed to get 6 aircraft on the ground. On the other side of New Guinea Buna and Dobodura have been occupied and Milne Bay seems to have been reinforced. A patrolling Dutch submarine has been ordered to try and attack the Japanese ships there while a new A-24 squadron has been transferred to Port Moresby to relieve the 16th Bombardment.

It seems that the immediate danger to Wake Island has passed. Search planes are not picking anything up and the CV Saratoga will be heading back to Pearl Harbour tomorrow, well maybe after a raid on Marcus Island. CL St Louis, DD Craven, DD Worden and DD Monaghan have been detached from her TF and are staying at Wake Island, 4 PT boats are also enroute from Pearl as well. So far the Wake garrison has the units shown below. 900 or so mines also protect its approaches and a squadron of Marauders is also enroute. the 19th Combat Engineers are also enroute and the next BF that becomes available will also head to Wake. If i can strengthen Wake enough and develop it a bit more i aim to station some 4e's here and threaten his shipping lanes to the Marshall Islands. I'm surprised that Wake Island was not one of his original targets but i have a feeling it will soon hit the fan. Maybe ill have Enterprise and Lexington patrol around Wake Island for a little.

2 Brigades of the Imperial Guards Division have been assaulting Rangoon for about a week. A third Brigade is investing Meikitla but so far all assaults have been beaten back. I'm trying something new in this game. Normally i lay a couple of minefields at Port Blair and then bugger off leaving it to the Jap, however im going to try and hang on to it for a while in this game. So far parts of two base forces are on it, see screenie for details. If it can become somewhat of thorn in his side all the better, and if it can also station search planes and fighters it might help detection and protection levels in the Indian Ocean and allow by RN CV's into the fight.

Any thoughts on my strategy to hold onto Wake and Port Blair and more importantly, any advice?
Cheers

New York Herald 31st January 1942

Like the CV Lexington a month ago, the CV Saratoga has carried out a raid on the important Japanese search plane base at Marcus Island. While the rape of the Dutch East Indies, where Batavia still holds out against all odds, continues the aircraft of the Saratoga plastered Marcus Island. Wildcats strafed the docking platforms while SBD's cratered the airfield, blew up fuel supplies and hammered installations. Once again the USN Navy has delivered a hammer blow on the behalf of the freedom loving peoples of the world. Saratoga now steam Westwards with her flags flying proudly having delivered Uncle Sam's belated New Years gift to the Empire of Japan.

Reached the end of January 1942 and heres the general strategic map. Java has all but fallen, Singapore still holds out in Malaya and Herb is making his push into Burma where Rangoon fell on 30th Janaury 1942. The Solomons and Gilberts have been quiet so far and i have used this window to fortify and garrison New Caledonia. He has bombarded Port Morseby twice after A-24 Dauntless have peppered his transports with 500 and 1000lbers. On the last run a DD and CA hit defensive mines. I dont know whether he intends to get PM but i will fight him for it. CV Yorktown is already at Suva. Japanese subs have made their presence felt in the shipping lanes and these next few turns will see those flush deckers that have upgraded redployed to Pago-Pago and Canton Island. In China things clamed down after the successful assault at Sinyang. Hankow will turn into one hell of a battle but as of yet none of us can bring enough air power to bear to allows us to think of a successful urban hex assault.
