The sun continues to beat down onto the Atoll

Overhead Nakamura is at work again –trying his hardest to integrate 29th sentai into the defences.
Juni V, JuniB, Hyakutake and Iwaya are playing the role of bombers today (the Helens are too busy to pull of the never ending battle they are involved in) –flying a neat finger 4 formation –while one at a time fighters peel down from above “attacking them”

Our veterans have a good day –they end up with sore necks from craning them upwards –and they take quite a bit of delight “grading” many of the attacks.
I suppose we can say –Its good to be the Kings.

The training however is not going well

29th sentai is raw – very, very raw. Although its pilots are fairly compentant, its obvious that many do not yet have the skill to fight three dimensionally.
He will have to come up with something else…………..

That evening there is a subtle change to the news broadcast –a new event that passes completely unnoticed by everyone in the unit – a defeat is broadcast.
Its full of embellishments about heroic last stands, glorious actions, courage and tremendous sacrifice.
The underlying facts are simple though
The Armed merchant cruisers Hoko Maru and Ukishima Maru have been hunted down and sunk by British Carrier forces West of Bombay.
Courage, heroism means little, if the enemy brings a much bigger stick to the fight.

13/9/42

Operations report 47th sentai
Planes available 36
Under repair nil
Pilots – 36 – WO Inoue rejoins the unit

Combat patrols flown –nil action

In conjunction with 29th/70th sentai a new defensive plan has been agreed upon.
I remain dissatisfied with some aspects of pilot training, and am dismayed that again I find some pilots with very minimum hours are being sent to us. If we are to continue to defeat the enemy bombers we should be sent experienced pilots, not ametuers……..

Like Carnage Herbie i too am a fan of this AAR. It will be a pity that each of these pilots will fall under my guns

Thanks guys -I've nearly caught up
Cantona buddy -you'll never kill 47th sentai! Tojo's Tigers rule the sky

14/9/42

Combat air patrol over Kwaljien, height 15000 feet
This patrol has been in the air for nearly 2 hours now, a long steady two hours –no contacts, no sightings –just the constant scanning of the sky, the beat of the engines, the vibration and rattle of the cockpit, the whistle of wind finding its way into the gaps.

Hyakutake is leading the other 4 veterans at the moment, about another 40 odd fighters are spread around them –Nakamura had another hunch today –but this time he has it wrong

The stick of the KI-44 is actually quite long,, its about an inch in diameter, and reaches to about 2 inches above the knees of the pilots. How they manouvere this stick is a very good way to judge the man in the cockpit.

Hyakutake flies one handed, usually right handed, he uses just 2 fingers and his thumb, half a knuckle. I don’t think he is even aware of his grip –his mind simply works –I need my plane to do this –and it all happens. His Left arm is usually on the throttle, or what ever is needed, and he is quite happy to swap hands at times –and this motion usually happens with out conscious thought.

Several pilots have actually seen Hyakutake scratching his chin, or the back of his ears in the heat of combat. His motions are precise, minimal, seemingly effortless –his fighter an extension of himself.

Both twins are two handed men –especially in combat. Once in battle for them they will be one throttle setting for the entire flight. Both can be said to be rather brutal on the controls –planes are to be forced in the direction they want to go, not coaxed.
Nevertheless, they too are pretty precise, although some times I think Juni V forgets his rudder some what.

Iwaya –as we probably know –has no real talent for his craft. Of the five of them, only he at the end of this patrol will have a sore arm – a result of over gripping the stick. Flight controls need mental effort. Flaps, throttles are used to the minimum.
Still – he has a very good appreciation of what he can, cannot do, which in flying is a very good thing.

Inoue, is an old pro –he’s been flying for years now, from simple crude biplanes in the early post war years, to this rather modern fighter.
He too is a two stick man –although he will fly at times one handed. He has a skill of flying a plane with his knees –trimming it just so –and almost letting it fly itself.

They are a pretty skilled bunch –reflecting experience, and training.
One wonders, if they could be transported through time to today –how would they have gone in one of our great online air combat systems –would some pimply 13 year old ‘own’ them?

Maybe –but I really suspect not.

majuro atoll is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. A huge lagoon, 25 miles across, with a small rim of islands encircling it, most too small for anything much -except a single strip on a couple of them.
The lagoon is, however, a superb anchorage.

Foew weeks now allied bombers have beemn attacking it from great heights, and zeros have failed to intercept them.

With 100 Tigers available, Nakamura demeers to the navy request.
he basically confinscates the dozen mavis float plane transports, and utilizing a massive human chain, stuffs them with ammunition, basic spares, and litle else.
This evening nearly 100 fighters depart Kwaljien, and establish themselves around the lagoon fields.
The Navy swaps places with them, the zeros to Kwaljien

Fortunately no allied planes arrive to observe the change in occupiers, and the trap is laid........

To say that 47th sentai was prepared for the move is an understatemant.
Even as the supplies snaked out to the flying boats, our veterans were packing.
You can't squeeze much into a fighter -but our pilots are pro's
A sleeping mat
Some eating utensiles -(maybe) The razor
A tarp
Little else -all know that this will be a combat flying visit.
Moral is very high -all confidently stow away more important belongings at Kwaljien, entrust them to base staff, they will be back -they know it.

Iwaya has the most difficult time -another after dark visit to the AR wreck has given two more cases of scotch, Hyakutake and himself have a terrible time trying to hide i

The other Sentais' have yet to experience"life on the road" -and will find out to their cost on arrival

Our veterans arrive first -and do as all veterans do -stake out the best digs, nearest to the planes, the rice cookers -furtherest from the latrines..............

Another view - our boys settle into the top left hand corner..........

At 33000 feet the world is an incredibly hostile place.

The horrible leather mask that feeds you your life sustaining oxygen is
tight, rubbing, and uncomfortable -and under it you are sweating

But on the outside a thin laying of frost is trying to develop onto
every metal surface in the plane

Juni V can feel the cold through the leathers of his gloves, the way the
flap lever, the Throttle, wants to stick to his skin if given half a
chance.

He is so cold. His feet feel like clubs somewhere down below him.

Juni V is tucked up hard behind and below his brother, Juni B's
right
wing almost seeming to touch his cockpit (but in reality at least 10
feet separate them), and they are swinging around hard left, the
controls are sloppy up here, and the engine is bellowing hard, starving
of grip, and power giving air.

The sky is clear as a crystal, the clouds are 10000 feet below, and
death stalks this far, far away world.

The Liberators -(for so long mis identified as B-30"s by our pilots
-but
in reality B-24's) are now directly ahead -little dots on the
horizon, 9
steady streams of vapour marking their steady march across the sky.

The twins are about 500 feet above them, 5 miles ahead -intercept speed
of over 500 mph .

Gun safeties confirmed off!

The twins lead the first attack, behind them about a dozen Tigers
follow, Juni B is barking instructions across the radio -"The
cockpit!,
aim for the cockpits!"

Full throttle!

A slight push, right stick a bit, clear Juni B, . nose down, the bomber
grows, grows, now a cross, engines, wings, The crash of guns, the stink
of cordite, adjust the tangent of tracer (but tracer is always low!),
the bomber flashes past and above, left stick, left rudder, centre, a
near vertical wing over, Juni v keeps the bombers in sight, neck
craning.

He levels out, now at the same altitude of the hunted prey.

The barsteds are still flying -no surprise there

70th sentai joins in -another dozen or so fighters -slashing attacks
from the side.

Juni V smiles -it's a cold merciless smile -as one of the bombers
abruptly folds up -and begins the long, long fall to the ocean below

Juni B is still barking instructions to his section, they form on him,
and the battle takes a pause -the bombers re group -fill the hole, and
can do nothing but watch as the fighters steadily overtake them, form up
on the right flank, the left flank, ahead.

The twins -like many Japanese pilots -have hatred the introduction of
the radio -it is a symbol that the lone Hunter, the true fighter pilot
-is no more.

Its says -team, co ordination, numbers, technology. Juni V hates it. So
does his Brother . But Nakamura believes in it intensly -and they WILL
use it

Nakamura has now joined the fray, the bomber pilots can see the numbers
gathering against them .

"Attack!"

The fighters peel in -again the sky is split by the steams of fire -the
fighters flashing in from all directions, too many, too many.

Another bomber falls

Men die flaming deaths, in the sub zero cold.

Inoue falls away - his engine has taken a shell square into the front of
it -shattering it.

By some miracle he is not hurt, and he will be able to glide home -an
adventure in itself -but one of little consequence to anyone else but
himself, as the battle above goes into round three

The twins fall away -both are empty of ammunition.

The descent is a battle descent -a great spiralling dive down wards,
almost sickening, down, down to the clouds -hurry, hurry!.

Down to warmth, and air, and life

The atoll swells into view.

Level out, join circuit

FUST -Flaps!, Undercart!, Speed!, Trim! - nobody does these
automatically -you never forget this

End of strip, wait, wait, wing over, descending, pick touch down point
-15 meters from the coral edge of the single strip, level, wing over,
line up, speed, speed, visibility is so **** landing this beast, side
slip slightly to clear the view, the water rushes underneath, coral,
strip, DOWN!, no bounce, chop throttle, brakes , brakes on.

Juni V stops, blips the engine hard, right rudder, clear the strip.

Taxi to the edge, swing her around, leave her running.

Canopy slams back -and a man is there, passing a canteen of desperately
needed water.

Men swarm over the beast, ammunition is carried in great snakes of brass
, carried and fed into her roots, fuel is not required yet..........

Done!

All Clear!

Check left!, wait - three more fighters coming into land -and Inoue
rolls past as well -Crap -he looks a mess -is he ok? -no time to ponder!

Bombs crash into the lagoon -a long way away -fear drags at him -there
is only one possible target -and he is sitting in the middle of it!

Full throttle !

AWAY!

Juni V streams down the strip, begins to climb

More bombers are approaching....................

Operations report 47th Sentai

Planes available 26

Planes damaged 10

Pilots -37

In conjuction with29th and 70th sentai engaged in a series of intercepts
of heavy bombers over majuro atoll

Nil Losses

Nil kills given to this unit

4 kills attributed to 29th sentai

Note - a very careful examination of the records of the American 139th
bomber unit involved today sees that 5 liberators were lost today -and
there is little doubt in the authors mind at least, that Col Nakamura
took down LT Simpsons Bomber .

With 20 of the AVG shot down in China by a combined fighter sweep near
Nanchang -today marked a black day for the allied air force.

Hi carnage -Ill look next turn............

17/9/42

Of the ten fighters damaged during the battles of the 16th, 3 still
remain grounded the next day.

2 had suffered gun failures -jams -almost certaintly caused by the
humidity causing ammunition to swell slightly -these had of course been
rapidly repaired.

One fighter needed a new canopy -shattered by a heavy machine gun
bullet. How the pilot escaped was beyond his comprehension.

Three more had the now quite usual scattering of damaged panels and skin
coverings -the ground crews could by now fix these almost in their
sleep.

This left 3 heavily damaged fighters.

If they were American, they may have been considered "expended". By the
middle of next year our Japanese ground crews will be simply pushing
them to the side of the field, striping what is of use, and leaving
them. But this is still 1942, and old ingrained habits fall hard.

Inoue's fighter is the toughest task. The single round that struck it
has struck right at the head of one of the great cylinders of the radial
engine -knocking it clear backwards nearly an inch.

Not far -if you forget the effects that has to the piston and crankshaft
moving at lightning speed inside..

The engine is totally ruined.

Majuro atoll is not really the cutting edge for support -yet Nakamura
will want that fighter as soon as possible.

Here the contrast to American mechanical power can be really seen.

A new engine will need to be delivered. Where the Americans would use a
forklift , trucks, a mobile crane -Inoue will have to cool his heels
while his engine is manhandled to a barge, floated out to the mavis at
Kwaljien, manually block and tackled into it -and the whole process
repeated at Majuro.

The labour will be incredible -and history shall forget it. But this
simple act -a single engine change will underline the principle
difference between the two sides in this war.

One, attempting to overcome through ever greater physical effort -the
other, applying endless mechanical power to do what 47th sentai could
never dream of doing.

Today though, 47th lives in ignorance of the gathering clouds -and rests
-the Americans won't be back today - not after yesterdays bloody nose.

From

Minister of Production

To

Minister of resources

To my Honourable Cabinet Member

I have recently heard of a disturbing shortage of some basic raw
materials in some of our major industries -principally rubber and iron
ore.

As the minister of defence assures me that the enemy efforts to
interrupt shipping have been "completely ineffectual", can you please re
assure me that my current slump in Heavy Industry output is not from
shortages -but from some other effect?

Please attend to this matter promptly

Yours truly,

Mr Iwaya Snr.

Squadron experience is at 70
Juni V at 82
Iwaya -74
Juni B at 82
Inoue -73
Hyakutake -78

Tonight the ocean is so still that I-26 barely rolls at all as she literally wallows on dark oily surface of the southern coral sea.
It’s a very dark night –but the stars fill the sky with a brilliance that so many people in the world will never experience.
Other than the gentle beat of her engine steadily charging the batteries, she lies almost lifeless in the dark –just a shadow suspended over blackness.

They are a long way from home – and to her captain –seemingly very much alone and not achieving much.
But at least they were still alive………..

The patrol has been ardous –not from enemy action –the 2 sightings they had seen had been catalina’s –and those well before they spelt trouble.
It was the boat itself that had caused the trouble - a constant stream of niggling defects and breakdowns - from the main engine throwing a valve (bad), to the rice cooker gaining a hole (disastrous), or the two minor gas leaks.
Add the endless heat, and crushing humidity, nil successes, and the battle to maintain morale had been as straining as any he had ever encountered.

Morale is never really an issue in the Japanese navy -iron discipline ensures that things get done -but poor morale does affect performance -and in a submarine where a second can count -this could be tragic.

Juni sighs, looks at the brilliant night sky, breathes the cool clean air again, in a few minutes he knows he will have to return to the stink below.
God, just to have a bath…………

‘message from 8th Fleet sir”
Only the third message for 3 weeks. He’d received the one directed to other boats operating off the coast of Australia -abandon efforts there for some sort of rescue mission -what in the world were paratroops doing operating on Austarlian soil?.
The other one was a fuel status request -reluctantly answered -Juni hated any transmissions -he still suspected the allies could track him……….

This one is different.
No more patrol in the wastes………..

He bellows to the First engineer below-“ Engines! -how long before you can give me 22 knots!”
Navigator! -new course!”

He descends into the red light world -action beckoning at last -if the old girl hangs together long enough to get them there.

47th sentai now has 31 planes available, 2 more are U/S after another "quiet day"

Its not mechanical damage, or enemy action, its sheer fatigue -2 pilots simply misjudge landings, one piles into the drainage ditch at the end of the field - going head over -he is terribly lucky not to break his neck.

The other bonces hard, and hard -and bends a wheel strut.

The pressure is telling on the unit

The twins too add a nice touch - staring at the ocean all around that evening - they have to think of their father, which leads to the Navy -and ships in general.
"Ever thought how easy a Cruiser would find plastering this place?"

To the other men - to whom ships have always been targets, its a strange, and somewhat unsettling thought..............

The deployment to Majuro has always going to be a short one.
The Allied bombers have again found that they can bomb Kwaljien with out harm, sailing serenly along above the flaying zeros

Nakamura leads the Tigers back to kwaljien, nearly a dozen brocken birds remain behind
Its Juni V's poor luck to remain at Majuro to supervise the return of these planes and their pilots.
He is the only 47th Sentai pilot left behind, the other planes belong to the 70th and 29th.
he has a miserable night -finding much to his shock -just how lonely he can become with out his comrades around.
originally, he realises that night, as he crawls into his sleeping hole - war had been about gathering kills, fighting for the empire, defending his and his nations honour.
Its almost funny, how it takes a lonely night 10 months into the war, for Juni V to find what all men in combat find: you don't fight for those things.

You fight for your friends.

47th sentai has a quiet day at Kwaljien.
This is what the operating records show, but it is really no quiet day at all.
Combat air patrols are maintained all day –and this being the equator –that’s a very long day.
Fuel is consumed, supplies burned.
The ground crews continue their routines, the pilots attempt to re settle into their quarters.

Sentai life continues –there is duty rosters to fill, paperwork to complete. Juni V flies back into the island –very relieved –the island hop has been a real stress –no shepherding bomber for him today –just a compass bearing to fly, and endless ocean below.

Despite the bombing of the Allies, the base remains in very good shape –all the bomb holes have been repaired, however many hangers are still –and will remain –shattered.
The number of destroyed planes scattered around the base is also growing, the slow changing of attitude to planes equals a disposable item, is slowly growing………

The day passes quickly, the sun beats down, the men sweat –but all are grateful that the Allies do not come today.

21/9/42

There is a huge bunker located near the southern end of the main strip at Kwaljien.
Fully the size of a small apartment building, this bunker is the home of 4th fleet HQ, and has consumed fully 2/3rds of the concrete that Japan has painfully carted to the south pacific.
Totally bomb proof –(probably Battleship rifle proof too) it is easily located –no number of palm tree trunks or fronds can hide the array of radio masts beside it.

Today Major Hashimoto has a guest from the Navy –a Captain Ito, from one of the sunken AR vessels in the lagoon.
Captain Ito is awaiting re assignment –a unlikely event for a captain foolish enough to get sunk –and he has been a very sad figure on the island this month.
Its during Lunch that one of the picket vessels to the North east of Kwaljien reports that a large raid is coming in. Major Hashimoto invites the Captain deep into the bunker.
Reception on the radio is brilliant today, and the two men settle down, to listen to the show……….

“47th on me!”
“That’s Nakamura –group leader –tough man” explains Hashimoto
A long silence
“ 70th take the Liberators –we take the forts” the voice is calm, crisp, decisive
The two men wait in the gloom of the bunker –hard to imagine that men are about to fight, and maybe die so far way, yet so close-almost here in this bunker with them.
“Standby to attack!”
“Nakamura’s knife” –Hashimoto explains again
“Attacking!”

“S@#$# Iwaya! -what are you doing!”
“Sorry!”
“Hyakutake attacking! –follow me down!”

“Juni attacking!”
An unknown voice – “I’m hit! –Im out of this, damn!”
“70th sentai attacking”

“47th on me!!”
“ He almost got you, you silly @#$%$#!”
“Walk in the park friend, walk in the park”
“47th, turning right”

“Someone’s got one –look at that fat barsted fall!”

“29th sentai –attack!”

Outside, the bark of the ACK ACK guns begins, and Captain Ito cannot help cringe –he’s been too many times on the receiving end………..

“Guns expended sir!”

“47th sentai attack!”
“got the barsted!”
“He almost got you!”
“Crap! –missed!”

“47th on me! –next man to break radio discipline will regret it!

Faintly, the scream of bombs can be heard – but they are so far away, that the bunker barely rattles.

Hashimoto smiles “they are doing well today “
“Doing well ?–they always get through!”
“Considering that this bunker is the main target –and they have never hit it –they are doing well indeed friend”
“All planes return to base! –Inoue –take your datai – remain at 20000, Hyakutake –you relieve “

The two men quit the bunker, climb onto its massive roof to watch the return.

The fighters come in in one’s and twos, they rapidly fill the field with the blast of engines, and great clouds of coral dust erupt everywhere.

Canopies fling back, revealing sweating, shining faces.
Men race out, the great snakes of ammo dangling from shoulders. It looks and sounds chaotic –yet in mere minutes the first fighter is again racing down the field.

4 enemy bombers have fallen today, and the raid defeated.
Here at Kwaljien, at least, Tojo’s Tigers are ruling the sky……………

Major Jones and his unkillable Big Betty are once again winging their way south west from Wake towards Kwaljien.
Major Jones, understandably -is not a very happy man.
What has started out as a planed 24 bomber strike has disintergrated into a a 6 bomber shommozzle -3 liberators, 3 Forts.
He has no idea where the other bombers are -but he can guess -taking off into a thunderstorm clouded sky is probably not very condusive to a co ordinated strike.
but there you have it -it happens

Still does'nt make you feel any better about it -it just happens.

His unhappiness positevly plunges into places we don't really want to go about 50 miles out from Kwaljien -the little black dots -swarms of them rising up towards them.

Truck

"How many do you count fwd gunner?"
"Aaaaaaaaaaah, hang on. Crap. At least 60 plus skipper"
Sixty plus
Last time it was sixty plus verses so few he'd come home with 3 engines, 3 dead men, and more damge to Big Betty than he cared to think about

Truck this.

"Navigator! -Im' not happy with the weather over target -we are going home -give me a new course!"

Big Betty turns away for Wake.................

"Fighting the Tide" by Col Nakamura, Amazon books, 1962

I think, for me, and probably for most of my men, 22nd of September marked the high point of the war.
Once again the bombers had turned away.we were winning -either they had to come in above the Zeros, or battle in and gain so much damage that continous operations just could not be sustained.
Morale was sky high -and I was frankly astonished that losses had been so low.
I know now that the minister of war considered his Tojo's Tigers the premier outfit of the airforce -and that he took a personal interest in our endevours -a very flattering thing to here.
But this had a very dangerous flip side. We were the very strongest part of the shield for the empire -and wherever it was under greatest stress -there we were sure to go.
47th sentai was doomed to see very little respite in the months ahead...............

The Tigers rest today.
All 3 fighter units return to 100% availability

Unknown to our men at Kwaljien, a Mavis on routine patrol from Ambiona has made a disturbing discovery, several allied merchants, and a AVD vessel are unloading troops at Tenibar island.
Supreme commander Cantona has begun a stealth offensive.................

The Japanese response is in complete contrast -brutal.

it was Juni v who expressed it well enough

"Oh for heavens sake! -are we moving again!"
his Brother laughed "Come on old warrior -think of it this way - more poker victims!'
A thought flashes across his mind -its actually quite comical to see -a look full of cunning and guile -"Hey Iwaya! -you got room in that crate of yours for the scotch!"

Iwaya waves him away -" have you got a shovel comrade, cause I have forgotten where I buried it!'
'As if!"
"Damn" exclaims Inoue " and I have only just gotten my bed sorted out at last too"
"Sleep" -you mean you get sleep?" Hyakutake almost shrills
Inoue puts his foot onto the table - "Injury recovery -you like flying so much Hyakutake -I'm sure you don't mind taking my patrols"
The men laugh - but already they are in motion.

The orders have just come through -all of the KI-44's are going to be re -deployed, a nasty shock to the commander at Kwaljien -he is going to feel very exposed again.

Its another across water move -and Nakamura is busy trying to find a shepherd again for his flock -and it takes yet another bottle of precious amber fluid before a Mavis can be arranged.

This is going to be a dangerous move - too many water moves for his liking -with too many questions not answered -base support enroute?, fuel enroute?
And the worst - the final destination?

For Juni v -the news gets worse -he loses the toss - he will remain to escort the last disabled planes tomorrow.

So, just after midday the 3 sentais depart Kwaljien -Nakamura gives the troops on the ground a great farewell -over 100 fighters in packed formation pasing over the atoll at 500 feet. Its a great sight, Japan at its strongest to date.

Nakamura leads them North West -and is greatly relieved when all planes reach Ponape safely -and even a little astonished to find that aviation fuel and support is waiting for him.

The Commander at Ponape seems to be very pleased when he reports to Col Nakamura.
He has 93 of the 100 fighters that arrived yesterday ready for today’s departure to Truk, his base forces have “put in a mighty effort” to get them ready.

His happiness is about to be rudely shattered.
How was it, Nakamura wants to know, that yesterday he arrives with 100 serviceable fighters after a relatively short journey, he finds this morning that he only has 93!
Did he miss something?
Did the allies bomb the place unnoticed by him during the night?
Or a naval bombardment perhaps?
Or saboteurs? –was there some sort of security problem?

Or – and here the pause really was leavened with that particular icy menace only men of real rank can imply – could the non repaired fighters have something to do with working attitudes displayed last night?

Could the long periods of inactivity here in this tropical paradise have dulled the mens abilities?

You get the picture –it was not a pretty sight, and the base commander must have been thourghly relieved to see them depart.

Iwaya is selected today to bring along the cripples, and the Tigers move in another long sea transfer to Truk,, another bottle of the scotch gone.

26/9/42

Operations report 47th sentai
Temporarily transferred to Southern Army Command

35 planes, 36 pilots available
Operational loss today – one plane lost enroute from Ponape –cause unknown.

Truk is bustling with ships – and with planes, Army and Naval.
Our pilots are simply too tired to care. They are shown some reasonable quarters, fed, and exhausted, they stumble away to rest.

Unknown to them, heavy bombers are bombing Sorong, Ambiona, and allied troops are frantically trying to carve an airfield out of the jungle at Tenibar island.

27/9/42

Inoue observes the small atoll below him with interest. It’s a fair bit different to Kwaljien –this island has hills, and jungles , but still the great reef surrounding it.
Unlike Kwaljien, the Navy is here in obvious great strength. Even as Nakamura leads them down towards Palua, he can count nearly 20 merchant vessels nestled in the lagoon, and scattered here and there amongst them the grey sleek shapes of destroyers and several cruisers.
Inoue is very, very tired, the last 4 days have been long and stressful –his back feels like a rod of iron, and his arse is simply numb.
He’s been in this cursed cockpit for ever………….
And they still don’t know where they are going.

The great flight of fighters is breaking up into sentais, the sentais into daitai’s , them into flights of 3 –a tricky process, but its all happening smoothly, the Japanese airforce is still a master of mass formation flying.

Inoue completes his checks, and begins his down wind leg, two of the newer guys each side of him.
Palua has only one strip so far (he catches sight of another being built) –it’s a good wide one though
End of strip, let it slide under the left wing, descending over the outer reef, 1000 feet, speeds good, wing over, , level out, flap-good, speed good, aim point, good, wing over, line up, 600 feet –all good, ease, ease –bit short –blip, blip, , steady, down, cut throttle –now where do they want me to park? –there? –there? –OK, swing, left brake,
Blip, blip, and cut –Thank the heavens.
Crap, he needed a piss.

The canopy slides back –hot, humid air.
Welcome to palua Sir! – I have been assigned to assist you!
Young –God, so young a face –but genuine
Maybe –if he is really lucky –he’ll get a bath.

28/9/42

From Shattering the Sword –a Cantona production.

2/2/independent company, and the base force troops had been successfully landed , and the construction of a small airfield had well and truly begun before the Japanese found them.
For 3 days the response had been rather muted – some zeros had swept in from the north and inconclusively tangled with the P-38 LRCAP, several beaufighters had been lost, but little had interfered with the companies work.

15 Japanese 4 engine bombers had bombed the lagoon –and little else.
For all intents the invasion –or occupation was going smoothly.
We now know however, that if this was planned as a diversion –then it worked very, very well –something had really touched a nerve in the Japanese high command, and the elimination of “this cancerous growth” as herbiesan called it –became all consuming

Motivated as well by the need to provoke a real fight –the response came quickly

As 47th sentai allows all planes to catch up at palua –the Navy is already swinging into action.

29/9/42

“Of all the places one would hope they never, ever see again –this is it –Sorong”
Juni B’s voice of disgust probably reflected perfectly the sentai’s opinion.
Sorong has hardly changed –no –its got worse.

The field is still small, barely capable of supporting the 100 plus fighters crammed into its confines, and its occupants are still the same malaria ridden shambles of the last visit –the relief ship simply has never come.

And now this “backwater” –is suddenly thrust into the thick of the battle brewing to the south west.
Small as the field is –Sorong, Ambiona, Biak – the only fields in navy bomber range that can support Betty bombers (Timors are too risky to deploy too) –and the Allies have been busy trying to close it down
Even Hyakutake is depressed at the place –chance of action promised or not

The men slowly get the base into an operational state, but its not going to be easy……….

Hyakutake finds that what spares there are – are what they left behind in last deployment –or bought with them.
Inoue discovers that Sorong DID have a bath house of sorts – now it’s a great big crater –mud filled
The twins won’t be gambling – nobody at this base has been paid in months –the last supply ship carrying the money was sunk…………
Iwaya discovers what “war rations” really mean when same supply ship does not arrive………….

And Nakamura has the evil discovery that fully 50% of the men at the base are now
Hors de combat –getting 100 fighters in the air here is never going to happen……….

30/9/42
100 pilots are formed in a semi circle around Nakamura, its early dawn, and the air is actually quite brisk –not something that will last long in this sweat hole
To the rear of the field, mountains tower into the sky –they are evil green things, bases buried in the mists that cling to them.
Everything is wet, the ground, the trees, the m en. 47th sentai has had one night here so far this deployment –and all of them, with out exception, have a new understanding of” ‘tropical downpour”
They only half believe the base force men “that that was light” –but the rivers of mud, the great drains –speak far louder
Nakamura’s voice rings clear across the assembly
Men – enemy troops have occupied a small island to the south west of here. Last night our navy successfully landed detachments of our own troops in reply.
Battle is joined
Many of our troops and ships must pass by here on the other side of those mountains –the allies must sink them .
Our mission is 3 fold. One –defend this field. Two – cover any ships that pass –Three –kill imperials!
Good luck –good hunting!

1500 hrs, 15000 feet.
Nakamura has been right –its been a battle to maintain CAP – today has seen 3 fighters damaged on that cow of an airfield already, and at the moment, only 20 fighters are aloft.

Eighteen B17 attack the field –no high level attack this one – up to today Sorong has been “a milk run”
None of our veterans are in the air for the attack – but our “newbies” cannot be called rookies either –many are now as experienced as any pilot in the Japanese airforce.
They set to work with a will –and a punishing fight takes place
2 B17’s go down –all are damaged
Sorong is spared all but a single bomb –it ploughs deep into the mud –and fails to explode

Despite the mud, the terrible food, the humidity, the bugs and mosquitoes – morale soars.
Tojo’s Tigers are again near the tip of the spear.

Kills for 47th sentai now stand at

Hyakutake 3
Juni B 2
Higashiyama (WO) 1 (today)
Kimura (WO) 1
Ginowa (WO) 1
Hidaka (WO) 1 (today)
Inuzuka (WO) 1

The twins and Inoue are huddled under a crude palm branch shelter, not so far from the rice cookers, attempting to eat the midday meal.
It’s a singularly unpleasant business again – the rain is busily assaulting the shelter –and in the main winning.
It falls so heavily that it is interfering with conversation - water is running down the poles supporting the shelter, flowing in under the crude wooden floor, and some of it blows in as mist. The unpleasant fact is that the sheets of rain are doing nothing much to lower the humidity –sweat still runs in rivers off the mens body.

“Do you realise its October friends?” notes Inoue
“So?”
A pause as yet another heavier sheet of rain marches over the field, obscuring the 3 fighters at the end of the strip- Hyakutake is waiting for a chance to commence his patrol
“Means the war will be over in two months –remember –all home by Christamas”
“Ha!”
A stream of water suddenly breaks in through the roof –striking Juni V
Irritated to the extreme, he moves, “ If you can swim for that long – Christmas can’t come fast enough”

Like most downpours here, this one lasts just a short time –soon Hyakutake is able to take off.
He climbs steadily to 10000 feet, dodging the majority of the heavy cloud cover surrounding the base, finally clearing above it, heading North.

From 10000 feet, the entire North PNG coast can be seen.
To his North –the pacific stretching away to the unseen Phillipines, to the south, the great mountain ranges he has just cleared –a backbone of rock and jungle stretching into the far south.
Somewhere down there he knows some fellow Tigers are on patrol above Babo –by all accounts an even worse field than Sorongs.
To the North West –Ambiona – not visible today.

Below, the passage around the tip of PNG.
Even from 10000 feet, the reefs are easy to sea, as are the narrow passages that any ship must use to pass through here..
Mountains cleared, Hyakutake reduces throttle, and begins a long glide down to the passage, crossing the coast at 5000 feet.
He is enjoying the flight –the air is smooth, and the view of the ocean is really an incredible beautiful sight.

He looks carefully for his objective –Ah –there they are –little glints circling some 20 miles to the north. He leads his flight of 3 fighters to them –soon the circling Tojos come into sight.
A casual wave, and Hyakutake and his 2 companions take up station above the ships below.
Hyakutake takes care here –carefull to the extreme to trim his fighter just right, to set the engine pitch just so –to squeeze every last ounce of economy out of his engine. This will need to be a long patrol –and getting here has burnt enough fuel already.

He barely looks at the ships below –the Navy really does’nt interest him at all – battleships have always seemed to him to be a total waste of effort.

The patrol lasts some 4 hours –and is uneventual –the Battleship continues to plow south west, while some cruisers and destroyers pass going in the other way –one is smoking badly..

Hyakutake lands with out incident –files his report
He wonders how many new fighters could have been built instead of a battleship –that useless Navy folly

2/10/42

Tenibar island waters -0100 hrs

Admiral Iota is leading 4 of Hyakutakes “useless ships” in line ahead
From the Bridge of the Hyuga –towering so far above the smooth, moonlit sea – Iota notes with satisfaction that visibility is superb.

The bridge is quite –just the gentle strumming from the bridges vibration, the shuffling of the lookouts and other crew –the Officer of the watch taking his fixes.

“20 Miles to Tenibar island sir”
“Very Good – Captain –bring the squadron to 22 knots –make your attack run”
“Sir!” The captain moves to the stbd wing –“Flag –signal execute, revolutions 270, come right, new course 160’

Ponderously the great battle wagon swings to the new course, behind her three other great shapes follow –dark blots on the ocean.
On both flanks, sharper, smaller shapes move to conform.
A lookout calls –multiple look outs call –brisk, eager voices in the dark
“Enemy ships, possibly destroyers –bearing 030 –range 16000 yards. A dozen pair of binoculars rise –turn to examine the threat –moonlight reflects of lenses.
“Time to put all that gunnery practice into use hey captain?” Iota notes with satisfaction –‘ Not before time” comes the retort.
Its been a long boring period the last 3 months for Battle divisions 3 and 4 –finally a chance to get back into the war.

The great guns are already swinging to Stbd seeking, seeking.
“Open fire when ready”
Ting, ting –the gunnery bells ring.
Great gouts of fire erupt –plunging all the rest of the world into darkness –CRASH!, CRASH!, CRASH, CRASH! –Hyuga’s Gunnery team is trained to a peak.
The four battleships sail straight ahead –several cruisers and destroyers break towards the enemy –and the sea is filled with Long lance torpedoes –deadly missiles racing unseen south. They wont be needed.
Hyuga shoots well – her first salvo is a straddle –the second hits –on the horizon a sudden flare of light –flaring, dieing down to a steady glow.
Battleship Fuso begins to fire –and now Hyuga’s bridge is shaking to the rhythmic jolting of her secondary armament.

It is 3 destroyers against many, many ships – and there is simply no escape –especially as the battleships shoot so well – Iota can only feel sorry for the men on the destroyers as heavy shell after heavy shell strikes home.

“2 hits reported near secondary gun deck sir – nil damage”
“Very good”
The three flares have gone out –sliding under the seas.
“Cease fire”

The action has lasted just 12minutes.
“Tenibar island in sight sir –I have the target located –enemy infantry positions”
“very good”
Sinking ships is far more glamouruos Ioata thinks –but this is what we really need to do.-“Time to really get to work gentlemen –Guns – lets remind them that the Empire has teeth shall we?”

At 0130 precisely, the Imperial navy once again delivers hell………………

Major Jones in the indestructible Big Betty is again returning to Kwaljien.
Things are different this time.
At 11000 feet she follows a dozen Liberators and another dozen Forts in a perfect formation over the lagoon.
There is Flak, but no fighters –intelligence has it right.

There is a perverse satisfaction in calling when your enemies are not at home, even better when you can inflict telling damage.
The raid is devastating –DD Shirayuki -crippled already, damaged badly off Wake – simply says –Ive had enough of being pounded, and sinks promptly.
Another escort vessel is shattered, many support vessels are lost.

The advantage swings back to the Americans.

4/10/42

Nakamura calls the men together at dawn.
He is pretty perfunctory.
“Fighting at Tenibar island is complete” -he allows a grin “ the Allies have been destroyed to the last man”

A murmer of pride and happiness sweeps the men

“Banzia!”
“Banzai!”

He allows them to settle

“Regretfully this means we have to move again –destination unknown –prepare for another re deployment” he kicks the mud at his feet in disgust “lets get out of this dump”

OK –I have actually caught up with the war now –so those following Cantona may get a 2 person view of the war.
Im not sure where the Tigers are to go next –I need them at Kwaljien, but fighting bombers is getting repetitive - -Im torn between needs of game, and desire to see 47th sentai fighting enemy fighters (China again?)
We will see.

Operations report
47th sentai in conjuction with 70th sentai, 29th sentai redeploys today to XXXXX, 3 fighters lost enroute – 2 pilots 70th sentai to mid air collision.
1st leut Agrwa (missions one), seen to go into spin at 20000 feet –suspected Oxygen deprivation.

Again lack of training and experience may have caused this loss.

All five of our pilots are resting on the steps of a small wooden bungalow, nestled at the edge of the newest field they have seen in their travels around the south pacific.
The contrast to the last few places cannot be more stark – the building is one of many, its clean, comfortable –and heavens above! –there are even staff –cooks!, medical men, -just about anything you would find in a peace time base.

The commander of the base has been extremely efficient, almost glad it would appear for the break in the mind numbing routines they have had since the wars start.
Our men have had a bath –joy –and even laundry done for them, and , this is the greatest miracle –new uniforms, flight suits are available.

Nakamura has declared that the Sentais will rest here for tonight, and for tomorrow –no CAP, no flying –just rest.

It is desperately needed –the men won’t admit it – but if they could look at themselves now in a mirror –and compare that to 6 months ago –the difference would be stark.

All have lost weight. All have new creases and worry lines in their faces. Inoue has, well –he’s gone gray. Juni V’s hairline recedes further every day.
These are the physical signs. Internally, in behaviour, , there are changes too.
And Nakamura can see it.
Its in the little things –like the pre-flight checks – now he knows 2 of them simply walk to planes, climb in –and fly. If it flies, it flies, if it doesn’t –shrug
Post combat reports are now almost so brief as to be meaningless –“ I saw the enemy –I did not engage”
And its been a long, long time since the mess had a “riot”

Nakamura knows he must manage this redeployment very carefully – fatalism and fatigue kills just as easily as a P-38………….

I-26 sits uneasily on the surface. Nobody in the crew, from her captain to the lowest seaman are very happy about the situation. I-26 lies anchored a mere 100 yards from the shore of tenibar island, behind her several other submarines are taking the same risk as her.
From the dark shadows of the beaches, a small number of men are struggling out to her on several rubber rafts.
Juni wonders about those rafts –they are not his , and he thinks of the efforts some one has made to get these essentials to the men on the beach.

Since Tarawa, High Command has sworn that no man would ever be abandoned – maybe here is the proof he thinks.
Whether it is worth the deployment and risk of a fleet submarine, he would love to debate.

The rafts are nearly alongside –and somewhere above in the early dawn light –a enemy bomber can be heard –a few more minutes, and he will be able to spot the helpless submarine

“Come on!” Juni urges them through clenched teeth, more to himself than them –“Come on, for the love of God!”
Anger at these tattered men, changes swiftly to compassion as they are helped aboard the submarine –no easy task in this shore swell.
They are a pitiful sight – thin, emancipated, many wounded.
But they are all grinning –and no head is bowed.
They are winners.
The men are hustled into the stink below –nearly 40 of them –the rafts make a forlorn return –maybe next time.
‘Full ahead Both!” lets get the hell out of here.

Operations report 47th sentai

Planes available 35
Pilots available

Status –at ******, in transit to ******
On orders from Col Nakamura, sentai is resting for further 24hrs prior to next transit move

Its around Midday, and although the Humidity is still a stinker, the sun is not so brutal today, a solid grey overcast covers the sky, and really, its not so bad at all.

Hyakutake and Iwaya are stretching their legs – its come as a bit of a surprise, but the two of them -at the moment –actually have nothing to do. So, they have decided to walk a lap of the field perimeter, visit some of the AA crews, look at the scenery.
Things are truly that peaceful here today.

They have come about half way when the cramps hit Hyakutake.
“Umm, got to duck into the jungle for a minute…”Iwaya laughs ,then gets a little serious –“just watch for snakes buddy”
Hyakutake carefully slips into the jungle a few feet, drops the Hessian bag containing their lunch, moves a few feet to the back of a tree, squats, does what he has to do.

Its at that really awkward moment that he sees -well, he sees – “What the!”
A great hairy orange beast, with long arms, a really ugly face is silently coming down the tree.
The hairy -(Hyakutake simply has no idea what it is) ape, or whatever, reaches the ground –and they catch eye to eye.
A horrible shiver races up Hyakutakes back –he is simply frozen with fear.
Then in one swift movement the creature grabs the lunch bag, and with -“was that a bloody grin! –did that thieving beast just grin at me!’ – clambered back up into the tree tops.

For Iwaya -Hyakutakes abrupt departure from the jungle –pants still around his legs, more than made up for the loss of lunch.. That and Hyakutakes almost desperate whisper of shock –“An orange devil I tell you –an orange devil”

They are a long way from home, the men of 47th sentai……….
