I-26 slides silently through the oceans at her patrol depth of 50 feet.
She is -well basically –in the middle of no where, so when Captain Juni is called to the control room for a sonar contact –he is as surprised as anyone.

“many ships sir – definitely a convoy from the screw count”
“A convoy hey –a bonus perhaps?”
Juni is not expecting to reach the new hunting grounds for a week yet –but the sooner the better.

He cautiously brings the submarine to periscope depth –and risks a quick look.
The sound picture (for once) is very good – fat transports –exactly where he expects to see them, and there decks are crowded with troops!

He looks –and looks again.
“XO – have a look at this” Juni is smiling
“It appears our Armies offensive plans are not entirely over”

he lets the XO have a good look at the rust streaked transports , then takes I-26 back silently into the deeps………………

8/12/42

At this very moment, in a different part of the world, Captain Juni’s Son is fighting for his very life.

The P-38’s have come again – a dozen or so this time, and although the Japanese out number them almost two to one, the battle is very much even.

Both sides have met at the same altitude –and swung into a swirling, chaotic classic dog fight.

Juni B is in a tight, tight turn –wings vertical to the sea below – head and eyes firmly fixed on a fighter on the opposite side of the circle.
He holds the stick lightly, one handed, the other on the flap lever, concentrating, concentrating. There is no emotion, just an iciness –total concentration.

The circle is closing, the more nimble Tojo cutting the corner. The american pilot too has his head firmly fixed over his left shoulder –calculating the ever decreasing gap between the hunter and the hunted.
500 yards, the P38 is slowly sliding into his sights – too far yet, too far yet.
Soon
The American suddenly heaves his beast over the opposite direction, reversing the turn. Juni Smiles – the enemy loses critical energy.
He will have him
200 yards
The Big P38 pulls up, begins to climb as Juni places his finger on the firing button, carefully keeping his target in his sights.
Another kill coming up………………..
Range increasing
What!
Oh for #$$^&^%$#! Sake!
The big American fighter increases the range –powering away.
Juni turns – totally frustrated, and then has to quickly side step another fighter diving in on him –easy enough –but yet again this fighter powered away from him.

This engagement is very indecisive, a few holes in a few planes on each side.
But the lesson of the day is clear.
From here on in, the enemy can, and will, choose when ,where and the circumstances of the fight.

After the bellowing noise of the last few minutes, the small field is very, very quiet.
By chance all 5 of our veterans are on the ground together - some grounded due to defects -or lack of fuel, or for two of them - just returning from their patrol.

It is going to be impossible to get into the air now to make the intercept - its a strange feeling not being there -waiting to see if those who are up - will do the job, or not.

There is nothing for it but to gather around the ugly contraption that passes for a modern radio -and listen to the battle.
The bombers are coming in -B-17s again -18 Tigers are going to attack, a dozen odd navy as well.
Inoue cannot think that they look a little bit like men settling in to listen to a good game of baseball -"we need a beer to make it complete" he thinks.
It is of course -a little more serious than a game.

Wo Kimura leads the attack -they have good position -hieght -and the sun.
The radio crackles
"Attacking now!"

"Reform!, reform!"

another long silence

"Attacking now!'

"Leave them!"

The group murmur -some of the barsteds have been turned away

"reform on me!"

WO Kimura's voice comes across -calm, even
""Kimura here -might be an idea to find a hole or two guys -ain't going to stop this lot"

Reluctantly the men shuffle outside from under the palm fronds -looking for the attack.

it comes into view - a small series of dots -shuffling across the sky.
Still too far away to here -but aiming straight for them. From here they look so harmless.
Several of the dots break away -Kimura is winning after all!

A sudden flaring streak falls from the formation -"friend, or foe?

Now the bombers are overhead -and still the hornets swarm about them.
Our pilots eyes on the ground judge the run -and find it wanting.
The bombs are falling alright -no need to find holes though -they detonate miles away -in the hills.

The drone dies away, and soon the field begins to count the planes as they return -and the anxiety rises - one is missing.

Operations report
47th sentai
Mearuke
Planes available -33, pilots 35

18 tojo engaged 22 B17E at 15000 feet -running fight
All 22 enemy damaged -nil shot down
4 KI-44 damaged
WO Kimura (2 kills) lost -persumed dead

Salute to Kimura - who died a hero's death by pushing the bombers off target.

Extract from “Fighting the Tide” by Colonel Nakamura –an Amazon publication

Could we maintain the pace? It was a question I had to ask myself every day.
But the orders were firm.
At any cost -any-keep the Torres straight shut.
So we battled on, 3 dozen men, operating at the very spear tip of Japans war.
And like any blade over used - we began to become dull.

Blah!  Once again! No kills!

I love your AAR, but this AAR glaringly points out the inferiority of Japanese aircraft attacking 4E's in Nik's mod.  I wish the 47th all the luck in the world, its going to be a long war.

Im afraid, yes -its going to be a long war
(as long as the journey is enjoyable)

11/12/42

Nakumara faces the men again.
Behind him, in the soft early light, the last of the ammunition belts are being fed into 47th sentais planes.

“Our bombers are going to attack Thursday island at 1100 hours precisely. This sentai will sweep the way clear –I intend to attack the field at 1030 hrs –height 19000 feet.
We will loiter for exactly 30 minutes – NO longer –then” he grins “ then gentlemen we shall return to Lae –where I am told, new engineers are right now finishing our new quarters”
The men laugh –Nakumara’s face tells them the real story of ”the new quarters”
“With baths sir?’ asks one of the WO’s
“Gold plated my friend –gold plated –also equipped with large breasted whores – age unknown though!’
Grins
“And spam” quips Juni B
“Yes. Lots of spam “ grins his brother “Lots and lots of lovely spam”

33 tigers sweep south. Mixed in with them are some 20 odd zeros.
The sky is clear, bright, bright blue, and the ocean a brilliant turquoise green.
It is simply a beautiful day to fly – even the sky itself seems asleep –it is a smooth as silk today, you can concentrate totally on your flying alone, on your enemy.

The enemy are about

‘bandits!, bandits!, 2 o’clock low! 10 enemy –P-38s!!
‘Got them!
‘our friends the 333’rds I think”
“iron dogs too”
“Good -welcome to my sky friends”
Hyakutake, Juni B, Juni V –keep your guys upstairs – Iwaya,
Inoue –follow me!”

15 tigers peel over , silver wings glinting in the sun, sweeping down towards the rising enemy. The zeros peel in too.
Frighting fast the distance between the two groups closes –and guns begin to hammer
Nakumara takes his opponent head on –and pieces fly from his plane –he swings clear –the enemy turns into him, the sky now a wheeling buzz hive of planes – the P-38 attempts to get his tail, Nakumara chops his throttle, twists, slams his shells into the flashing target as it charges startled past –and WO Girowa –still hard and dutifully on Nakamura’s tail chops the P38’s left tail clean off –it falls, a Brocken twisted mess.
No time to check for chutes –the dance of death is tight and violent today.

The enemy break away –and the fight is scattered over 20 square miles.

“on me gentlemen, on me”
‘Hyakutake –where the $%^&%$ are you?”
‘”bit busy here sir -$#%^&” -guns hammer over the radio “ #$%^& bloody british heap of %$#@! Crap –fly straight !”
‘well when you are finished –form on me please”
The sentai starts to regather , the fight has dragged them down to 10000 already –too low, far, far too low

“climb to 20000, 47th, heading 080 gentlemen”

Our rookie Iwaya –on his first ever combat mission, drags his eyes of his leader –Juni V – eyes searching for the compass –trying to convert the wildly swinging ball into a meaningful message –and dies immediately as the heavy shells from the diving P-38 shred his plane and body into a thousand fragments.

The attack is devastating
Juni V see’s the diving planes just in time, manages to flip his plane wildly out of the way of the streaming tracer –but 5 others do not
The dozen or so diving fighters snarl as they rip the heart out of the formation –surprise is complete.
Some how Inoue avoids the attack as well, he too dodges the dive,, pulling himself almost vertical, chopping his throttle (a desperate, desperate move) and spinning down.

Inoue pulls out – pulls hard right –Juni V’s plane is over his right shoulder, P 38’s all over him like mice in a grain bin.
Inoue turns desperately hard to come to Juni’s aid, his throttle at full emergency boost –every muscle in his body physically trying to wrench his fighter past the laws of physics –harder, the P38’s –GOD 3 off them –dancing 300-400 yards ahead –Juni V ahead of them.

Juni V’s turn is tighter, Inoue’s turn is tighter –but the P-38’s have the power, the speed –and far too much energy.
Two fire –and JuniV’s calm, concentrating face –still turned firmly against the enemy –disappears in an abrupt blow torch of flame.
His tiger folds into itself –and falls –a bright comet across the sky

Inoue screams, rage, despair –he fires, he fires, the guns hiss empty.
One of the 38’s twists right –and Inoue dives on him –and misses

‘47th on me!”

Nakamura leads 47th east towards Lae
Its guns are empty, and many planes are damaged

Nakumara looks around at his unit, and the maths repeat again, and again in his mind
33 minus 10 equals almost 30%. 33 minus 10 equals 30%, 33 minus 10 equals 30%

Well past dull, the blade has broken.
“Juni B says little
“how am I ever to get drunk alone?”

There will be a little time – enough to gather his sparse, sparse possession, place them into the small box.
The war will continue.

Finally an answer to the Japanese fighters appeared to have been found.
333rd fighter, in the fierce and brutal battles over Thursday island, began to fight where they had the advantage. Utilising a simple tactic –boom and zoom, they began to tear the lighter Japanese fighters apart
The ground work for the Allied offensives was firmly underway.

12/12/42

The war goes on.
The alarms sound well before dawn at Lae airfield -the 4 engined baka's are coming again.
Lae harbour is choked with shipping today -they may be the target, they may not be- lae field is home to a very large number of cripples too - the advantage is to be pressed.

Most of the cripples belong to the 47th -over half of its remaining planes are too damaged to fly.
But some can

"I don't give a #$%^&^! " Juni screams -I fly!, I fly!"
'In what?" Inoue stands chest to chest against the other straining airman " In what? -and for what?"
"Out of my way you old fool -you, you ,coward!"
Inoue grits his teeth, but his grip on his friend does not loosen.
His friendship is to strong to be hurt by silly words like that.
"There are planes enough brother today -the enemy will always be there. When we are strong again -we will fight again. Today we rebuild, rest -and mourn"

Juni cannot raise his head.
Around the two men the field is bursting into action -planes roaring down the strip, the air thundering to the noise and vibration.
The war does continue.

Today Nakamura has been forced to stand down the sentai. As a fighting unit -planes,and men, it would be useless in battle today.
Eventually Inoue mangaes to quietly lead Juni to the trees.

The bottle of scotch helps -a little.

Operations report -47th Sentai

Unit at Lae -stood down
22 planes available -4 remain damaged

C/O's notes:

Sentai has been severly handled by recent operations against the enemy fighters over Thursday island. Principle concern is not aircraft state -but matter of rebuilding morale, too many have lost a friend.
have requested unit to be withdrawn To truk for refit -surprisingly approved ( Iwaya's Angel?)

For official eyes only:
Consider it imperitive that a new heavy fighter be developed.
That only postings of experienced pilots to this unit occur - wastage of rookies in useless combat is simply going to drag unit down with them.
It has been some 6 months since this unit recieved any leave -as lethal tactic against our pilots ability to maintain the fight effectively as anything that the enemy can do to us.

Nakamura considers the notes he has just written in the candle light
"You are a bloody fool Nakamura"

Carefully he tears the page out -it flares briefly over the candles flame.
Face the facts. we are here to fight, and die. get used to it.

Thanks for thoughts guys. Well, I haven't got bowel cancer -so thats good - we can keep on with the story.

13/12/42

Captain Juni searched the horizon carefully – I-26 rolling gently in the great sweeping swell.
On the port horizon a shadow, a hint of land –clouds.
Somewhere over there should be Geraldton, todays little project.

“Ahh, good morning Ex, all well?”
His Executive officer growls, Captain Juni know full well that all is not that well
“ Engines promises us that the port main will be ready in 2 hours –they are fitting the induction trunking now”
“Good” Juni again surveys the horizon.
“Our little air fleet should be finished his mission by then, recovered, and then to Perth eh?”
“Then to Perth”
Neither man can really believe that they are so far from home –but they are.
The signal man clambers up the narrow tube from below –“message sir”
Juni views it
What a hair brained scheme –and what a desperate one.
Still –there to do and die, and all that.
“The troops have seized Exmouth”
The Ex grins – “another glorious conquest for the army”
“And I bet resistance was desperate too”
“To work?”
“To work”

The two men watch carefully the departure of the little float plane – a small speck beetling towards the distant coast.

The ocean is very silent once it departs –only broken occasionally by the sound of hammering from below
“I dreamed of my Sons last night Ex”
The second in command tilts his head, his friend obviously needs to talk
“I dreamt that we were all at the railway station –and we were waiting for a train. When the train came , we got onto it –but Bisho stayed on the platform.
I remember we were very happy, my son and I –but that Bisho looked sad”
They contemplate the beautiful green depths lapping the rusty hull.
“I wonder what it means?”

Their conversation is interrupted –the small float plane is returning –as fast as its little wings can carry it.
It flashes past, low, signaling frantically, even as it begins to prepare to land
‘ Many ships –south by south east – 30 miles’

“Barsted!”
‘should we abandon the plane sir?”
Juni considers the problem – he needs that plane, he must recon Perth –they must locate the enemy carriers –if they are there.
“damn it –we must –but for Gods sake , hurry!”

The race is frantic – and the enemy destroyers have been led straight to them by the float plane –I-26 barely slides below the waves as the enemy come plainly into view –destroyers

‘STBD TEN!, up periscope! –he will fight them.
Target bearing 045! –hard to STBD! –load tubes!, Down SCOPE!
Threshing of propellers – UP SCOPE!
Barsted, barsted, he’s dodged.
Take her down!

The first crashing KAABAAAAAAAANGS! Of charges, no sweat, no sweat, we can………….

The entire boat is flung sideways, screams, darkness – and rushing water.
Direct hit, mother of God, direct hit
“Emergency SURFACE!, EMERGENCY SURFACE!
So now I know what the dream meant………….

DD Cummings is very, very good at her job –her second pattern blows I-26 to the surface - her bow rears into the sky –and then she plunges straight down into the depths forever leaving a swirl of oil, debris, and part of the cursed float plane.

There are no survivors.

47th sentai circle Truk, waiting to land while a squadron of Nells take to the air.
The great lagoon looks incredibly peacful, its sheer size is stunning, easily swallowing up the myrads of ships anchored in it.

Inoue conteplates the mountain, the ships, the lagoon.
From here at 4000 feet the garrison areas are clear - some Army units have a lot yet to learn about dispersal and camoflage.
Inoue notes the long line of Transports -Dash Fwd Sentai. He knows those planes well.

So.
Somewhere below then is 1st Para.
And answers -what happened to his son.
As Inoue turns into land, he is not so sure he wants to know.

Extract from “Fighting the Tide” by Colonel Nakamura –an Amazon publication

The Sentai would need to be rebuilt.
Truk would be ideal - fully supplied, supported, safe. I seriously began to believe that Iwaya did have a guardian Angel -with the entire Empire screaming for quality pilots -47th alone would in the days ahead recieve them, at a trickle to be sure, but recieve them we did.

Promotions were needed.
2nd Lt Miyazaki, as the next most experienced pilot, joined Juni B, Iwaya,Inoue and Hyakutake as a section leader and a twin stripe.

I would take the 6th section, once we had planes for it.
I could only hope Miyazaki would be able to take Juni V's place.........

47th sentai spent this day quietly
Earlier in the day, (around about 8:16 sharp in the morning -a moment in time Nakamura would remember for quite some time) the Sentai suffered its first, and probably greatest defeat to date.

A new enemy, from a totally unexpected direction, struck, swiftly, and with terrible accuracy.

Nakamura is sitting at his new desk - trying to get used to the fact that he actually has one-in his quite new and comfortable office (another shock to the system-truk has actual buildings) when 47th's nemises promptly knocked on the door.

A very tall, wiry (for a japanese that is) Officer enters the office, stops. He is of superior rank , and his uniform would not seem out of place in the Imperial palace itself -so immacualty perfect it is-and there is a sudden air of expectation in the room. For a moment Nakamura simply stares at him and wonders -and then remembers.
His salute -I suppose- is adequate.
"Colonel Nakamura -I have finished reviewing the flight records and maintenance logs for your aircraft."
There is a silence
It stretches somewhat
Undiscouraged the shining display of military perfection carries on "Therefore as base maintenance officer -and as such, ultimately responsible for the reliability of such planes -I have grounded all planes of 47th sentai until such time the true state of their repair can be ascertained"
Nakamura shakes his head 'Excuse me.....?"
But like a pigeon under a hawk he has been taken down.

A clipboard bounces down in front of him - the words GROUNDED -repeated 28 times shouting at him.....
Our dapper officer is already retiring -victory complete.
"wait a minute.................."

As they say -he never knew what hit him.

To My beloved sister,

Hi sister, its been some time since its been worth writing, as the places we have been sent have been rather remote lately. I am still alright, despite our unit having some difficulties lately. I regret to say we have lost a few friends lately -our American opponents are still fighting hard -although I am sure we will overcome.
I am still a section leader, after this month we have a new one -a little short guy called Miyazaki -he seems very brash.
What i do know of him so far is that he has this real natty moustache -do you think I should grow one sister.

I am not flying at the moment, as our Colonel is at war with the base maintenance officer -and he (our Colonel) is currently losing.
Its very funny actually........

How is Hiroshima today?, we so miss home here.
Funny things happened with Inoue yesterday, let me tell you the prank I pulled, it began....................

Your loving Brother
Hyakutake

The men are sitting around the enevitable campfire.
its no secret this evening, most are drunk -or well on the way.
Inoue is regaling the latest tale "of the war"

" so here's Nakamura trying to explain that 500 lb bombs realy make a mess of maintenance records -and thet Skinny idiot cuts him short - "thats why we have them in triplicate Colonel -triplicate"
the men laugh
"You haven't got the accent right Inoue" grins Iwaya - more snotty like friend -more like -he sticks his chin out, stiffens his neck " in tripliiiiiiiicate, in tripliiiiiiiiicate"
Even Juni smiles.

"bah" our new man, Mayazaki enters the conversation "if we'd known that the Airforce was going to be run by fools like that -We would have joined the Navy -"
"Which is run by bigger fools"
""maybe -but they at least have big guns to make up for it"
"There is that"
"there is"
"Another drink?"
Miyazaki drains his cup - already it is obvious that when Juni finally feels up to it -he will have no trouble with drinking alone......
'I have a brother in the Navy -he likes big guns -I hope he is having fun with them"
Inoue fills his cup too
"To big guns"
'To big guns"

Miyazaki would have been pleased if he could have seen his brother.
Seaman First class Miyazaki was incredibly happy with his lot in life. His job was simple and fairly uncomplicated -suitable for a simple and uncomplicated man - at the right time -pull a lever.
That was it.
Pull a lever - a lever that was an integral part of the process in firing the stbd barrell of his 6 inch gun turrett.
The rest of his life too -was simple
When not drilling in the turret, or drilling, or eating, or sleeping, or drilling yet again, you maintained the gun -an endles process of cleaning, scraping, painting.
Follow orders -keep your nose clean.
And play with big guns.

He would not have swapped his life for anything.

Take today.
Today he would spend some of it painting the antenna on top of the turret, then, well then, there was to be another gunnery shoot.

Miyazaki liked guns. Again he stared over the barrells of his turret -forward -forward to that mighty view.
One day soon, he knew -one day soon, those 18 inch monsters would bring the enemy to bear.
The great ship barely trembled, as she, and the great Amarda she led, beats steadily towards her objective
