There is an advantage having maintenance officers who are anal retentive.
You know the job will be done right.
So while Nakamura nashes his teeth over the lack of planes to fly, and the lack of opportunities to test out the new pilots trickling into the unit, those same planes are getting yet another rebuild.
The supply of nakajima engines is suddenly abundant with the arrival of several large transports in the lagoon - and engine changes occur rapidly.

Our men how ever are busy enough - they -mostly too their regret, have fallen into the clutches of the medics -many feel like pin cushions by the days end.
The medical officer too is cross with Nakamura - "just what have they been eating lately?"

For our poor Colonel -it seems that the whole concept of war at the front has been forgotten here at Truk. Of all of the men in 47 sentai - he is probably the only one keen to get away.

20/12/42

Hyakutake has barely opened his eyes, struggled to get them focused in the -God -what bloody hour is it? -morning light - before they focus on Nakamura's face in the cabins door.
Hyakutakes heart drops - crap -he knows that grin - and he's only just got to know her name too....
"Come on Romeo " -that bloody grin" pack your crap again -we are going"

2000 feet below Inoue the sky is an unbrocken carpet of white, stretching from horizon to horizon.
To the east the sun shines brightly, above them the sky goes for ever.
47th sentai beat onwards to its next destination.
Inoue, for once, is happy.
The great engine beats, that great powerful growl, thundering, thundering, driving him across the sky.
Inoue has just turned 41, an insane age to be fighting a fighter plane.
He does not care -he doubts he will see 42
Nothing matters though -not while he is up here.
As long as he remains here -here in the cockpit of his fighter plane -at the very peak of all warfighting profession -he will remain forever young.
Inoue knows now, after confirmation at Truk -that he is utterly alone in the world now.
But is he?
Around him, staggered in a great neat vee -47th splits the heavens.
No, he is not alone. His friends are with him

Inoue shivers, a great burden seems to slide from his shoulders.
As long as he sits here -here still as FIGHTER PILOT -he can look the world in the eye - and fight for them.

Iwaya too looks at the sky around him, at the men following him, planes bobbing in the turbulence.
So many new faces.
Following him -the great plane destroyer of 47th sentai.
Madness.
But they have followed him into the air with out question.
Iwaya tightens the grip on his stick -takes three great breaths.
He vows -he will not let them down.

Juni leads his flight from the very front of the vee.
He does not think much
There is too much hate for that

Miyazaki leads his flight near the rear of the vee.
Once again his voice cuts across the radio waves -shattering the beauty of the scene
"Gato! -maintain your station!"
Miyazaki's new sword rests uneasily against his thigh. He is proud of that sword is Miyazaki -it says much about him. It proclaims bushido warrior. Yes. And he will show them too.

Hyakutake is simply happy. He has a brand new plane - nary a scratch. He celebrates in the usual way - flying upside down.

I think, if we could have travelled through time -and viewed this flight above the clouds, this flight of 47th sentai -alone above the clouds, viewed it, filmed it - we would have put it to music.

And whatever music we chose -it would have to be hard, and tough - and music for men.

Extract from Shattering the sword -a cantona production

...........almost ready. Allied plans recieved a sudden jolt late in December 42.
Intelligence placed the Japanese fleet at sea - or in home waters -but the sudden occupation of Exmouth in Western Australia by a small number of Japanese troops threw a million questions at the Allied command

Prelude to an invasion of Perth?
A simple raid?
A lure?
A diversion?

many were of the opinion that it was simply an attempt to develop a seaplane base -remote, hidden -and dangerous to the convoys to Darwin.
3 days of cat and mouse actions saw 3 japanese SS sunk, 2 transports, a PG -for the loss of 2 DD, a PG -and troops landing.
Just what were the Japanese up to?

"So what do you think the Navy is up to?"
The men are at their latest base -Tokyo Rose is full of "the momentous invasion of Australia"
"I" Juni pauses dramatically " have absolutely no idea -it all seems crazy to me"
"And you with a Navy father and all"
"Yes -and I hope the hell he is well away from it all, it sounds rather too pointless to get killed over for one"
Tokyo rose sing songs on - listening carefully the men can tell - there is not much happening in the war.
The promised ' Victory by a year" was sounding more and more hollow every day. Still, the Empire seemed secure - if the enemy was coming back -he was being careful about it.

Nakamura wanders into the hut. He -as usual , seems terribly worried by something.
"I just met the 5th Sentai guys -our late companions at Mereake"
The men watch him carefully
'They've been chewed up too -did OK - but I think they too are finding the twin tailed devils a handfull"
"HANDFULL!" retorts Juni angrily " They are not! -we were just unlucky! I for one do not find them a handfull!."
Nakamura smiles "easy friend. Maybe equals to us then -but there will be more of them than us soon -and going one for one is poor mathematics, mathematics not for me"

This brings silence, and some gloom to the otherwise cheery room.
'So" Nakamura joins them, the flight leaders " Im here for ideas. Once again, Im asking"

We can leave them here - Planes, tactics, planes. What else is there to talk about?
The conversation will go well into the night.

This particular base is very quiet today.
Almost untouched for the entire war, it remains well stocked, well maintained, even comfortable.
The men to, are quiet, contemplative. Conversations are short, almost precise.
Tomorrow they will be back into the front line -back into the war.
Its easy to dismiss the disaster of a week ago - it was bad luck -the poor pilots paid, they weren't good enough. None of them -of course - will allow that- to happen to them.
They are good enough.

Nakamura issues last minute orders.
His last words are as always
"Good luck -and good hunting"

The day starts –as usual, well before dawn.
Already the morning is humid, and the flight suits are soaked.
Yet again 47th is at a new field –and yet again we have to do an orientation flight.

This strip is yet another rude slash in what once was dense jungle – again a single 4000 metre long scar of packed coral and gravel.
Its better served than Lae though –here at least there is a large steam powered roller, several tractors, and luxury of luxuries –several fuel trucks.

It only took Hyakutake 10 minutes upon arrival to discover as well, that this base has an ice making plant –and this can dramatically increase the comfort levels of the place.
All in all, here is a good base –one worth fighting over.

Our orientation flight is essential. Even as you clamber into your bird, you are trying to get the little crude map the zero pilots have lent us, organized on the clip board.
The strip is due north south, ocean at the southern end……….
OK, good.
Lets get this bird going.
The big beast of radial hesitates a bit today – fuel has a habit of vaporizing in the carbies here in the heat –it takes a minute or two for the pump to get it through –helped by some vigorous pumping of the throttle.
She finally catches –oil pressure…………..good, manifolds, ect, ect, ect.

We have a good ten minutes to wait , if we want to totally avoid the risk of cracking a head –or two- so another look at this damn little map.

You note carefully a very relevant fact –not a single out field –paddock, or emergency strip. If you have a problem – its either get back here –or it’s the jungle –very bad, or the ocean –very, very bad!
Temperatures good.
Chocks away? –yes –throttle a bit – bit rough here –better.
Check right –wait, a bomber is coming in from her dawn patrol.
She rolls past –man, that plane needs some paint.

OK –last check –brakes fully on –full throttle –no pitch –manifolds good –CHAOTIC check good.

And away we go - -you cannot see over the great nose for the first 50 metres –that’s the tricky bit, good, tail up –and flaps gently away –130 knots, and the strip falls away.
Busy, busy, trimming, cart up, flaps set, mixture set, wriggle in seat, close canopy –better, far better.
Can bloody think now.
2000 feet –gentle turn to port.
Ahhhh- that’s –you look at that bloody map again –yep –that’s ########.
Fair enough.
Poor barsteds there, what a dump of a place to spend the war.
5000 feet – ok –haze is thickish isn’t it?.
The field is sliding under the port wing now – easy enough to find.
You note carefully the landmarks – and you learn them.
No –really – you learn them. They lead to home –and life.
Get confused over them –they lead to being lost.
You learn them.

Several other planes are circling about – you join one.
Crap – its Miyazaki’s plane –so you peel away.

Your stomach rumbles.
Time for breakfast.

As you descend Hyakutakes CAP passes you –climbing fast – you are scheduled for the 3rd shift –unless of course the enemy come today.

Circuit.
Downwind
Cart down, trimmed, speed set.
$%$#@! KI-44’s so much faster than your last bird –the 43, this high wing loading crap could be dangerous………………….. crump! –bit of a bounce, steady girl, steady.

Canopy back –its already stinking hot under the Perspex.
Ice machine or not –this place could be nasty.

The Papagoda tower welcomes you, and you blip the throttle, turn your beast on a dime in front of it.
Engine off, silence.
The ground crews are already moving in to you.

A few men are lounging in the shade of the ready room/papagoda –the 5 minute alert men.
Breakfast?
Good – I'll have, gee –this is alright, a choice for breakfast!

You fill in you log book.
Another hour, one in nearly 2000 odd you have in this battered log.
Unremarkable, forgettable.
When it comes to flying – that’s probably the best.

The enemy do not come today
Its Iwaya you makes the comment

He is sitting on the “veranda”
In front of him a row of tails –the big bright T on each one standing out in the gathering twilight, the planes silver ghosts in the half dusk light.
Mosquitoes wine gently, and the base is slipping into silence after another long, hard hot day.
drinks clink -and laughter drifts gently acros from the mess tents.
‘Do you know what day it is tomorrow?’
Our men have to think about it for a moment –day? –aren’t all the days the same now?
“Its Christmas eve you idiots”
“Christmas eve? –whats that?” asks Miyazaki
‘”not so sure” replies Iwaya –a look of sorrow flashes across his face “ remember Takenaka? -he used to give us presents”
“Takenaka? –who’s that?” Miyazaki sounds bored -he is busy polishing his boots.

“Oh nobody – not that it matters now……………………”
“yes you are right – nothing matters now –except the enemy –and honour eh?”
Iwaya cannot reply.
He stares at that row of T's until the growing darkness swallows them from view.

47th sentai spend a very typical day in any war.

hurry up and wait.

They are however -reconned by high flying P-38's
47th sentai are currently at Lunga, awaiting the bombers............

To the twenty odd guys reading this -thankyou as we slip into the next year of the war.
while its quiet -

47th is 36 planes strong at the moment

One pilot is over 80 exp (Juni)
twenty six are between 70 to 80 -
and the rest are 60 to 70.

No rookies at the moment
Total average experience is 71 -and we have a miserable 19 kills for the unit now, after all those battles.
Nick mod -the bombers are just so tough! -but i still prefer it over stock!

I wish Cantona would launch the assualt soon.......................

Even against cannons the allied bombers just sail through in this mod - it's going to be a long few years for the boys!

Thanks guys - one year of war already!
Its been a great game so far -house rules really work for this mod I think -that and a great opponent.

25/12/42

While most of the Western world attempted in some form or another to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, 47th sentai spends another quiet day over Lunga on CAP patrol, or training.
There is another Tojo sentai here now, and some navy fliers as well, with rumors of more coming –if the field can be expanded again to take them.

This is a very large number of fighters (for Japanese standards that is) and Nakamura is going to take every advantage he has to whip them into shape.
He has some very unique ideas on that………………..

Iwaya, Frankly, is crapping his pants. Above him, behind him, beside him –almost close enough to reach out and touch – and a section of47th sentai crowds the sky .
Sweat is pouring of him, his fighter bouncing in the wake of the plane only metres ahead.
‘Truk, truk, truk” he thinks, as Nakamura leads the 9 plane vee formation into another gut crunching loop.
‘This is truking crazy!………… as the earth swings over his head, the sky swirling about……….
But nobody hits anybody else, and the formation pulls out –that delightful scream of engines under max power shattering the tropical air, and now Nakamura banks them hard left, wings vertical to the ground –and anyone unable to fly top rudder , is suddenly in very, very big trouble……………..

This, of course, is the point.
Flying – just flying, is actually pretty easy – some people can go solo before they can drive a car- and here in late 42 – this is the case for every single pilot in this formation (many, in fact, cannot drive a car at all).
But push a plane to its limits –or better yet –throw away any reference to the ground –where down only applies to where your bum faces at anyone moment – this is what separates pilots from flyers.

Nakamura needs to know –who are flyers, who are just pilots.
And from there, he can really start to train- energy conversion, combat maneuvers, , tactics.
Of the 100 odd pilots at Lunga today-he would trust just 30 with Nakamura’s knife –inverted diving attack –against the bombers.
It is not nearly enough

Two planes find noses dropping, fall out of the formation, one spinning very dangerously. Nakamura notes who they are, and leads the 7 remaining planes into a near vertical climb
‘Come on children, follow the bouncing ball……………”

Juni V’s turn is tighter, Inoue’s turn is tighter –but the P-38’s have the power, the speed –and far too much energy.
Two fire –and JuniV’s calm, concentrating face –still turned firmly against the enemy –disappears in an abrupt blow torch of flame.
His tiger folds into itself –and falls –a bright comet across the sky

NOOOOOOO!!!!!

I've been busy but I must of missed this! And his father to! Man alive I feel for Juni B
Great story Herbisan, thanks for it! You really get to know these guys and it sure sucks to loose one.

For reasons only the Gods know, 47th sentai is ordered back to Munda.
The men take it with good humour -after all, if you have moved so many times before in this magical mystery tour of the pacific -whats one more shufling of the chess pieces?

For nearly an hour the field bustles with the activity - and regretfully, most of it seems pilot related - too many have liked the look of Lunga, and began to fall into the trap of deciding its a permanent place to stay.
There are last minute hunts for pieces of kit, uniforms, and all the odds and sods

Juni is none too pleased -Munda is moving away from the enemy -away -exactly in the opposite direction he wants to go.
Its a sour, disgruntled pilot that follows Nakamura onto the taxi way, awaiting his turn to risk the srip.
Nakamura and his flight roar away, Juni awaits a minute for the dust to settle before releasing the brakes.
Left rudder, a bit of stick, and a touch of throttle.............and the great beast gives a sudden cough, another, and promptly dies...
WTF?
Juni has absolutely no time to figure out the answer to the suden lack of noise , when with a shattering BANG! - the fighter taxiing behind him - (obviously blind as all KI-44 pilots are mostly when on the ground) promptly rams into his tail.

The noise is nasty, violent - and the immediate silence shocking.

"Crap!, crap!, crap!"
Who in the world............what in the world........Oh crap"
Juni scans the cockpit-and that little horrible shiver up the spine, flush across the cheeks we all have experienced when we have really cocked up, consumes him.
The master fuel valve is still off.
Crap.

Juni struggles out of the cockpit, jumps down, makes his way to the poor sap following.

Oh, triple, quadruple,crap.
Ashen faced, Iwaya stares at his destroyed propeller.............

( I personally could not believe it when the unit moved -and these two were the only two to remain behind)

For a biographer trying to follow 47th sentai -one can be bewildered at the number of times the unit has moved.
It needs to be put into perspective though - the entire Japanese Army Air force was on the move.
I quote from the following........

extract from" shattering the sword" a cantona production...

A uique perspective of Japanese thoughts and plans can be found in Minister Iwaya's diarys, preserved to this day. As Minister of production, he held considerable sway in the war cabinet, and as 42 came to a close, he pushed hard.

The raid on Exmouth confirmed the location of enemy CV's, CVL's and many, many cruisers and destroyers -maybe not the main allied threat -but enough -and Timor had to be held.
Thus many Army air units were on the move to the DEI
But that was not enough, Iwaya had large hunks of the Navy on the move, and was pushing Burma command hard for release of many divisions.

The Navy was worried about Marcus, Enitiwok, the entire Gilberts, and what of the sightings of BB's, and a CV in the Alutiens?

Japan could not be in strength everywhere - but for december it seemed, it was trying to be................

Like children jumping at shadows, the high command tries to out guess the coming assualt, and many, many air units found themselves on the move.
47th was, of course , part of the panic.................

Juni and Iwaya rejoin 47th sentai - they have had a nervous flight - 47th have moved on to Woodlark.
Nakamura just shakes his head at the news of Iwaya breaking yet another plane -but secretly he is pleased to see them -the crossing could not have been easy.

Today is spent how many days are spent in war- in mis spent plans.
Over 100 fighters from Woodlark and Dobodura spend an entire day in LRCAP operations over Milne bay -but the enemy refuses to co operate.

47th is not surprised to hear that immediately they left Lunga, the bombers had returned.............

28/12/42

47th is stood down today.
Woodlark is another dirt strip carved from the jungle.
Our men, again, are resting as best they can in the shade of trees near their planes.
Since Juni's death, the appetite for cards seems to have died -the men spend a lot of the day dozing, or in desolutory conversation.
Frankly its too hot and humid to do anything.

Hyakutake and Iwaya have taken up a new game - chess -and are trying out a rudimentry game. Where the set came from -who knows -like a lot of things in this communal war -it seems to have just appeared.

Their game and concentration is interrupted by a commotion near one of the planes.
Slightly interested, they turn their attention that way.
Miyazaki is in top form - once again some poor peasant seems to have earned his wrath -some poor overwaorked, half starved, sick mechanic has failed to salute, or something.
Who knows, with Miyazaki it could be anything.

The two chess players wince as the sounds of the beating pierce the hot heavy air.
The beating goes on for quite a while......

"Check," whispers Iwaya
"Why does he do that?', Hyakutake moves the Queen to block the bishop
"Why did anyone beat us -remember our training?"
Iwaya grins -"yes -but I don't think it made me a better pilot did it?'
"Nothing would make you a better pilot friend"
'True, too true -and check mate I think.........."
Hyakutake studies the board carefully, the beating already forgotten in the background -it is Miyazaki after all
'You sly dog Iwaya. Another one?"
'Why the heck not"

29/12/42
47th's latest grand tour finishes back at Lae.
To Nakamura's relief all have made it back.
Lae -also, actually looks good -the constructionof defences is proceeding well - bunkers are coming together -interlocking trenches are beginning to take shape.

Work on reverents are even taking shape.

The bombers have been -and missed again, but this does not explain the heavy activity they find here.
A stream of bombers pass through Lae all day - heading North, refuelling planes, men, spirits.
Nakamura calls 47th sentai together.
He is brief, to the point -and for some , his words fill hearts with dread, others with joy, some with simple detirmination.
" Enemy ships are operating off Marcus island. Combined fleet has issued us with the following....." All units to come to high alert. Expect enemy counter attack operations in immediate future."

He lets the words sink in "The enemy are coming men - we are not sure where -almost certaintly its not Marcus -so it could be anywhere. We must drive him from the sky -so that the navy can smash him".
He takes Juni into his gaze. "And we will make him bleed, I promise you that men, we will make them bleed"

Its been another quiet day for 47th -which probably is a good thing.

Some features have improved -a mess of sorts -palm frond walls and roof -and a solid wooden floor -and a radio -not as impressive as the one at Canton, but still adequate.
And some one has managed to move a generator from a wrecked ship to the base - so even a few crude amenities -lights, the radio, are now being supported by it.

Our men are gathered around the radio -Tokyo Rose is in full flight............

"hey Inoue -you old fart and general font of all knowledge -where the hell is Naura island?" asks Hyakutake
"Some where in the pacific - did you not pay any attention in school?"
"No - I studied girls, and other useful stuff"
'I thought that"
"So whats there?"
"Where?'
"Nauru you fool!"
"Oh - I thought we were talking girls now, lets see, nauru -phosphates I think"
"Whats that?"
"Bird crap my friend, bird crap-I think"
'Your Kidding -no wonder the Navy let them have it -who fights for crap?"
'We all do" interupts Juni "we all do".......

“Enemy plans are uncertain. Ours are specific. We fight. Man your planes!”
‘Ha!”
The men salute, break ranks, jog to the waiting fighters, which are already running, ground crews at the ready.
Some pilots pause briefly to bow to the waiting machine- all return salutes, and the heavily clothed and burdened men quickly board the growling beasts –‘come on, come on, they seem to say – lets go, lets go”
Radio traffic is heavy from the enemy –they are coming.

Its Hyakutake that leads the first flight of 3 fighters of 47th into the air, with Juni following. Half of 47th is already up –somewhere south of Port Moresby, waiting, waiting.

Juni climbs, the mountains, so green and evil, minor obstacles falling below and behind to this fighter as it dances upwards into the heavens.
The oxygen is cool –sterile, the mask stinks, is annoying.
His flight tucks into the left flank besides Hyakutake –just where he wants to be.
A look left, look right. WO Izumida, WO Ginowa. Already proven killers.

Rule number one. Winners attract winners. The best, back the best. He has selected the best.
It is a crack team.
Come on you fat barsteds, come on.
The radio crackles
“Nakamura here –over point dog. Eagle one –go to dog 2, the weather is clearer there. We are returning to base –good hunting”
Hyakutake takes the flights 30 degrees to the left –still climbing hard –the world now just glaring blue, the sun, the cold, the endless vibration and beating engine, and to the north –a great range of cumulonimbus clouds, bases in the mountains, crown touching heavens.

And moving steadily across that white background –left to right, a tiny stream of black dots –
Yes!!!!, Yes!
Safety off!
Juni waggles his wings.
Hyakutake see’s them too, his hand circles around his head, once, twice.
Attack!

Throttle full – and now the Tigers really climb –26 fighters splitting the sky –and the growl now is deep, penetrating, powerful, alive.
Juni banks, the dots now have shape –wings, engines, twin tails –a dozen liberators –and following 5 or so clicks behind–massed B17s.

“Plenty for all brother”, he murmers –and murder fills his heart
His wingman stick close –it will be a traditional team attack.

47th and 87th sentai attack – streams of fighters cutting in from the right of the formation, each flight of three fighters teaming it up –taking on a single bomber –taking them on, hitting them, one, two, three, diving away and down, then, up –climb as fast as you can, and around –find that same lumbering beast –and go for him again –and if needed –again –and bring him down, bring him down, bring him down!

47ths first attack is good.

The great bomber grows, and grows in Junis sights –effective range –750 metres –but that is bullcrap –effective range is when you see the terror in their eyes.
First pass – guns hammering –pieces fly from the liberator – he flashes above –stick down!, full left –twist away, engine screaming
“he bleeds brother –oh yes –he bleeds!”
And pull out –pull out, and Izumida is hitting him too –and he too is joining you, and you are grinning Juni, grinning, but this is no grin of joy –a grimace of hate as you plunge at the bomber again –and Ginowa is there , right there with you –and as you dive away from that second pass –ears ringing, engine singing with joy –Juni screams in triumph –together you have avenged, the great bomber rolls, rolls, a wing separates at the roots, and it goes down, down, down you fat barsted American – go down!

Another –he tastes blood – he has bitten himself –it is nothing –there are still more –the B17s are coming, and Juni flings his plane hard into them,n and his wing men stick like glue, banking vertical –and theyflashe through them, still wing vertical –firing , firing firing, and guns empty, and roll away, damn, damn, damn.

The first attack on the liberators is good, very, very good –maybe Nakamura has the answer –the days of the individual dogfighter is dead…………
3 liberators will go down today –(Ginowa will be credited with that liberator) and 2 not to be seen by 47th’s eyes –and 3 forts as well –and not a single fighter lost

The bombers kill a sampan –and some pigs near the harbour.

Juni glides his empty, singing fighter down towards the strip –flying by instinct.
“It’s a beginning brother, it’s a beginning”

Operations report
47th sentai
Lae
13 fighters intercepted large bomber formation south of Port Moresby at very high altitude.
87th sentai too intercepted, along with several fighter bombers.
3 confirmed kills – several bombers so heavily shot up, can be written off

No casualties, light damage only, all planes available.

“pack attacks” –successful
We end year with 22 kills(one to be confirmed)

Debriefings go on for some time that night.
By morning Nakamura has re organised the flights, assigning proven pilots to our flight leaders.
Hyakutake still has 4 kills, Juni 2, WO's Izumida and Ginowa have 2 each, and the rest are spread around as singles.

But individual kills mean little officially to the Japanese Airforce -rivalries and bragging rights are reserved amongst the pilots themselves..

Today passes with out incident for the pilots-regular CAP is flown -zeros are dispatched on an unsuccessful sweep mission.
Another day in the war.

For the support men, the Engineers and poor Korean construction troops -the day remains as it was yesterday -as it will be tomorrow -a day of unremitting work.
The fortifications continue to grow, the fuel still has to be moved, the planes still have to be tended to.
Once again some things are becoming short (but not Spam -there is still plenty of that curse about) -mainly spares, especially tyres -the harsh coral of the strip is murder on them.
Moral -after yesterday -is again very good. Jokes split the air -and tomfoolery takes place.
Nakamura turns a blind eye................

Inoue and Nakamura have taken a stroll down to the seaward end of the strip .
Its another very hot, humid day -so this is actually a good idea -the "beach" -a very poor strip of mud bordered by mangroves -is just a little cooler than the baking strip.

Both men are armed -and certaintly not stupid enough to venture too close to the water - 3 Korean laborers, and 2 stupid soldiers have disapeared in these waters in the last 3 months - out there in the pale green water lives a particularily nasty crocodile............

3 Oldish destroyers are cutting into the harbour -bow waves creaming in the sun -the imperial navy looks particularily impressive today, rising sun whipping in the breeze, white uniformed men on the bridge, neat sailors manning the guns .
"I wonder what the Navy is up to?' Wonders Inoue aloud "The enemy advance at Nauru -and we hear nothing"
Nakamura hesitates. He sighs "Im sure the Navy has been busy enough"
Abruptly he pulls a small piece of paper from his pocket, hands it silently to Inoue

Its a simple card. Tens of thousands will be sent eventually, thousands already have.
Inoue reads it in silence, hands it back
"barsteds"
"I have told many men the same message, many times - and its never easy -but this, this is very hard"
"yes it is"
the two men stare across the sea -at the bustle about the three ships.
A gentle breeze comes across the bay -cooling, ruffling the still waters.
behind them, aero engines are spluttering, growling into life
"Juni is my friend -I will tell him sir"
"he is my friend too -we will do it together"

" A prayer for his Father?"
"yes"

The three ships leave in less than an hour -the Navy is, yes, very busy.

Another humid day, another day of CAP.
The enemy appear to be concentrating on mearuke -where 2 small merchant men fail to escape.
Portland roads in Northern Australia reaches heavy bomber size.
Today, I'm afraid is yet another one of those days.

We wait.

47th spends another quiet day - the pilots resting, waiting around the "ready room" -or, in small flights -circling on CAP over the mountains to the south.
Its an easy routine for them, one they need.

For Nakamura, no day is an easy day.
He is fighting his war now in a straightjacket -a jacket labled -supplies.
Lae, and the surrounding fields, are heavy with aircraft, aircraft that could/should be sweeping over Australia -but do not.
"Conserve planes"
"Please reduce hours on engines"
"unable to supply at this time"
"regret will be delayed -so sorry"
The signals pile up on his desk.

The daily routines go on -sleep, wake, wash, metrological reports, intelligence reports , flight rosters, flight plans, mission reports, maintenace reports, fitness reports, consumption of fuel reports.
Lead a CAP patrol -training programs, listen to the base maintenece officer complain again, inspect number 14 -yes, write her off -number 16 -no -we have those bits, inspect the trench digging, eat -maybe - another CAP patrol, ................

Its a wonder that a war can be fought at all -there's no time really for that.........

Iwaya is pissed off -really pissed off.

"Where the hell is my tooth brush!"
Hyakutake grins ' did you leave it at the basin?"
Iwaya thinks hard "Crap - think I did"
Inoue laughs -"well, its gone then -those Monkeys are quick"
"!@#$#@!"
Iwaya comes from one of Japans richest families.
Here that means stuff all - nothing is going to be able to replace that precious possession.
